- k00k, on 06/11/2008, -2/+45As long as they have hops and barley, we'll be all good.
- footodors, on 06/11/2008, -5/+46Which room do they keep the "cannabis sativa" in?
- Chairboy, on 06/11/2008, -0/+32It's an interesting idea, but the usefulness of this is in long term genetic fingerprinting for use in big scale crop revitalization in the far future. I keep reading articles that somehow suggest that this is a big seed bank that, if there's a disaster, farmers will somehow pull their trucks up to, stock up, and go off to grow food.
Even the most simpleminded can see the crippling flaws behind this idea, and the archive itself just doesn't work that way.
I'd like to see a shift in reporting that can lend some real perspective to the project and properly communicate that this archive serves much the same purpose that something like the CDC does. It keeps biological specimens safe for study in a future where wild specimens are otherwise unavailable. It's not a farm supply store. - inactive, on 06/11/2008, -1/+25Thats good question since its the most important seed in the world. You can eat it, you can make clothes and rope from it and you can smoke it for pleasure or medicine.
- dictatortot, on 06/11/2008, -0/+19who knew there were so many different kinds of wheat?
- hauntedchippy, on 06/11/2008, -1/+17Holy crap I am the biggest retard on the planet. I deserve a monumental digging down for that.
- MonumentMan, on 06/11/2008, -0/+14ive been to svalbard its awesome - um in a certain way. you aren't allowed to walk around unless somebody in the group has a bear rifle to protect yourself from the polar bears!
in order to attract the small crowd of Norwegians who call it home, the country doesn't collect any taxes from them. so a few hundred people end up here every year, relying on airplanes to fly in supplies especially things such as milk, etc. there's a big store right in town like a walmart and they keep it socked to the brim with every type of thing you can imagine.
booze is rationed.
the sun doesn't shine for months during the winter and the desire to drink is intense.
the sun doesnt set during the entire summer and they have to line their windows with tin foil to keep it dark during sleepy time. several residents told me it was easier to deal with teh darkness of winter than the "always bright" time during the summer. - inactive, on 06/11/2008, -0/+10Once they control the seeds they control the world.
- NoCt1, on 06/11/2008, -2/+11Its stored there.. they wont say where its at.. but i would say near the poppy seeds and cocoa plant..
- ekeup, on 06/11/2008, -0/+9Who says they don't?
- GarciaM89, on 06/11/2008, -0/+9This is a great cause.
I would like to see the same thing constructed but house DNA samples from every living thing as well.
Glad to hear that Bill Gates helped out with this. - ddcastaneda, on 06/11/2008, -1/+7Am I the only one who was hoping for more than just a room with some boxes from a "Doomsday Vault"?
- Dabaum, on 06/11/2008, -1/+7How surprised could you have been? The word "seed" is found in the title of the submission...
- tattoojoo, on 06/11/2008, -0/+5how do you know that they don't have cannabis seeds stocked away in there?
- Dabaum, on 06/11/2008, -1/+5It's a video, you f^cking dolt
- inactive, on 06/11/2008, -0/+4We need one for the DNA of all living creatures. I wonder if Bill will give me a grant?
- hiPpymIck, on 06/11/2008, -0/+3as far as i know the seed banks are producing as many strains as possible deliberately
its so that there are too many different kinds for some corporation to come along and patent cannabis and control it all
but they wont lose pure strains - the breeders will never give up their parent stock - its what they start with when they create a new cross.. so theyll never be lost - tho maybe difficult to get hold of
of course you could always get into breeding yourself - im not that much of an expert but i think you can breed 'back' to pure
..if anyones interested in cannabis breeding..
http://www.mellowgold.com/grow/mjbotany-removed/ - blast_flame, on 06/11/2008, -0/+3I think you're missing half of the point of storing those seeds. How do you think they'll get the useful genes into crops? Cross breeding is far too slow a method to use in a disaster...
- footodors, on 06/11/2008, -1/+4just seeds deputy fife.
- Chicken, on 06/11/2008, -1/+4More importantly.. Bill Gates paid for the shipping!
- Duositex, on 06/11/2008, -1/+4Anyone else surprised to see Dave Letterman working in Svalbard?
- inactive, on 06/11/2008, -1/+3TITAN AE!!!
- BassJunkie, on 06/11/2008, -1/+3So let me get this straight, in the rather unlikely event of a global catastrophe that wipes out all plant life I'd need to get to the north pole and dig through a few hundred foot of ice to get plant seeds, which I then need to plant (in soil presumably) so I then need to take them back with me to civilization.......good idea guys :-)
- phronq, on 06/11/2008, -0/+2What about the fish, plankton and seagreens? What about our protein from the sea, fresh as harvest day?!
- RealmDown, on 06/11/2008, -2/+4I seed what you did there.
- jimmick, on 06/12/2008, -0/+2There's a wheat super virus which wipes out all the remaining wheat strains (120 years from now, let's say)
Wheat is now extinct.
This vault has wheat in it.
???
Profit - Haoie, on 06/11/2008, -0/+2Better safe than sorry, you know.
- inactive, on 06/11/2008, -0/+2hmm great idea for the latest game, wrestle the crocs fight off the polar bears to dig through the ice to save the world.
- inactive, on 06/11/2008, -2/+4Over a billion people failed to starve since the 1970's because of genetically modified mood.
All agriculture is genetically modified, our newer methods are just more precise, safe, useful and faster than they used to be.
The only technology that will sustain this race and it's growth, particularly as climate changes, is ultimately genetically modified food.
Without it there will not be enough fertile space to grow enough food for everyone 30 years down the line, even if we have an otherwise utopian world with fair distribution of resources.
Poor people should not starve so rich white people can be self righteous about their over abundance of food. - sodade, on 06/11/2008, -2/+4Slowly but surely, Sativa is dying out because indica is more profitable for indoor commercial growers. 99% of seed bank sativas are mixes with indica. It is getting really difficult to find pure landrace sativas.
Naturally, indica is sleepy downer weed that builds tolerance fast and has a low ceiling - smoking that crap will make you dumb and slow. Sativa is great because it wakes you up, helps you focus and promotes activity over vegging out.
By the time they actually legalize it, I fear that pure landrace strains will be lost. - xspinkickx, on 06/11/2008, -0/+1AOL Video sucks ass I can't even get through the ad to watch the damn video.
- wiredDeath, on 06/11/2008, -0/+1"There", "Their", "They're", get em straight!
- wiredDeath, on 06/11/2008, -0/+1That must suck.
- wassim2k, on 06/11/2008, -0/+1Homer! You ate all the seeds! It's ok Marge, we can still grow stuff after I go to the bathroom. That's gross dad. Honey, you'll understand when you grow up, now got play with your little dolly.
- Technogeek1, on 06/11/2008, -0/+1Amazing. Simply amazing.
- vypergts, on 06/11/2008, -0/+1I didn't know Lois Lane worked for 60 minutes. I'm pretty sure she's the only reporter that's been to the Fortress of Solitude.
- donna1234, on 09/10/2008, -0/+1It's located some 700 miles from the North Pole, buried hundreds of feet deep in rock and ice, safe and secure from intruders, natural disasters and even military attack What's inside?

=) (happy face) - inactive, on 06/11/2008, -0/+1How is the drug supply? Police force?
- ChildeRoland420, on 06/12/2008, -1/+2None.
- Nenb, on 06/11/2008, -0/+1Probably not excessively affected. I suppose it was chosen for the remote location, relative neutrality of the place and especially the geological stability.
- JerzyBricklayr, on 06/11/2008, -1/+2what what.. in the butt.
- _skin_, on 06/11/2008, -0/+1There needs to be tools to get to the goods once you make it there...
Imagine the guy who has to save civilization. He gets all the way to the north pole eating rations the whole way... Only to find out that there is no actual food, just seeds. I bet he eats the sunflower seeds first. - shrapnel7, on 06/11/2008, -0/+1chrono trigger
3000 AD
a bigass robot is going to guard those seeds and kill anyone that tries to enter! - inactive, on 06/11/2008, -1/+2How can you tell the difference when purchasing?
- neofreakiii, on 06/12/2008, -0/+1Yay! Hooray for conservation of biodiversity and preparing for food shortages!
- drinking12many, on 06/13/2008, -0/+1They have a fake rock with a key in it next to the door im sure :)
- MonumentMan, on 06/11/2008, -0/+1its a booze town
bigtime
i seem to remember that each resident was allocated a certain amount of booze each month. they'd all save up and horde and trade to try to get the most booze. i think there were a few bars up there too.
weed is everywhere but i mean you cant grow the stuff within like 2000 miles (and the little houses which are all the same and provided by the town dont have basements due to absurdly frozen tundra so no grow rooms lol) - Whadabala, on 06/12/2008, -0/+1Someone actually doing something for mankind? No wai!
