Honestly, though, this would probably spell disaster, in the unlikely event that humanity makes it that long. It would expose some 50000-year lie or conspiracy, leading to world-wide destruction. There will probably be 80 trillion people in China alone, and the only way to control populations of that size (or any population over...250 million or so) is to feed them lies and control their thoughts.
This time capsule would be censored down to a cave drawing. - ivachen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21If it orbits the earth, doesnt it automatically orbits the sun?
- Loony, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21Im sure there will be a whole heap of messages like :
"Nerf Shamans!"
"Han Shot first!"
"Kirk is waaaay better than Picard"
"This time capsule scrolls like butter." - jollyllama, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18"Has Vista been released yet?"
- billizm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15Wonder who's blood it is...
- MacHarborGuy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12I wonder if Wikipedia will be included.

- ScoTTeh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Dont forget Duke Nukem Forever.
- thomashallock, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9What's a glass DVD? I thought glass was just an extremely viscous liquid; wouldn't the grooves just melt away after time? Google couldn't answer my question.
- Overdose, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9"Im here from the future" it will completely confuse them.
- hunto, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9"along with symbol-based instruction on how to build a DVD reader."
Also included are symbol-based instruction on how to build a TV, the cables, and a power generator.
WTF.. doesn't really make sense to me why to include instructions for the DVD player. Either they have (had) the technology or they won't.
Cool story tho - Digg. - wilsonics, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9or, "We came, We saw, We killed each other."

- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I'm curious about the blood drop too. It better be from the most awesome specimen of human meat Popsicle there is, if there is such a thing. That's not possible in our society though, with different races and such. On another note, I think they would be better off with hard copies of the data. Pictures, printed articles, etc. Just because they are aliens in anti gravity machines doesn't mean they know how to read primitive grooves in a disc with a laser. They might not even know it is a data holding device, and think it's a sprocket instead. If an all-in-one unit, like a video ipod, could last that long, that would be a good solution too. Just replace the power button with a "big red button", that's universal, everyone HAS to push the big red button!
- camtech, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6"An outermost layer of aluminum to prevent oxidation." In space?
- digitalchaos666, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6in 52,000 years some alien race will find the blood and clone it. There will be 1,000,000 Wayne Newton slaves running around.
- Snuffkin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5You've been watching too much Dr. Who.
- anatoxindust, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5So long, and thanks for all the fish
- bondo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6"Khaaaaaaaan!!!!!"
- wilsonics, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6That's quite a screening process, for sure. I'd bet it's some clone or something....then it automatically will populate more humans and start launching our 57000 year hibernated attack force!
- J_Omega, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5technically - orbiting the Earth DOES orbit the sun as well
- pwallroth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4yea if the sun wasn't so far away: http://www.troybrophy.com/projects/solarsystem/
- nannerla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Glass is very slow moving but by then it would be unreadable.
- camtech, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I agree. They should just put an iPod in there with the videos already on it. Hopefully people will be able to figure out an iPod 52007 years from now.
- MadEnvoy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Probably will be an English translation of Chinese instructions...
- ricodued, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Why don't they just include an actual DVD player or reader with it, one that they built from the instructions or something, so at least they've got something to work with when building their own.
That's probably a stupid question, though, or else it would have been done. - bede, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"Is designed to" stay up for 52,000 years is not the same as "Will definitely" stay up for 52,000 years. Who's to say in 25,000 years some latter day treasure hunter won't scoop it up and sell it to the Romulans or something.
- KidVicious, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4They made it orbit Earth directly because it's relatively easy to calculate where to place it so that its orbit will decay in 50000 years with no auxilliary propulsion. Also, I see a lot of people disputing the need to protect against oxidation in space. There isn't one spot where the atmoshpere ends and space begins. oxygen atoms reach out into space for an incredibly long distance, and exposure to even a small amount over such a long period of time requires protection. That's my quess on why they put that layer in it.
- wilsonics, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4And, plus, with the blood on board, that'll be one hell of an infection for the people that open it....i keed.
- alecks, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Wouldn't this thing be 'safer' (from humans that is) if it orbited the sun instead.....
- frontbrain, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5What if in 50,000 years humanity has been destroyed but somehow another intelligent species evolves, starting from very primitive ways and finds the time capsule before they are technologically advanced enough to have already discovered all of our knowledge. What if this has already happened once and a great space capsule of information is bound to be found any day now!!
I know I am crazy. - zeldafan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I'm gonna say that in the future humans (before we're all killed off) are gonna find it while it's still in space, wonder what the ***** it is, and take it out of orbit anyway.
I'd write something along the lines of, "Watch out for Chuck Norris" because even when we all die, he'll still be alive. - chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Why does everyone think the Earth and some form of life won't be here in 50,000 years? The Earth is a billion years old already, what makes you think another 50,000 is of any significants. Sure, we might not be here- but hopefully someone or something intellegent enough will be. I personally think this is a very intersting experiment- imagine the day when someone opens the capsuale, that's one hell of a day.
- Eightyford, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yes. But it would cost a lot more money to send it out there.
- frontbrain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"I feel sorry for the future. If people are really putting some of these comments on the disk then whoever finds us will believe us to be much less intelligent than we actually are. At least they will get some insight on what pre-teens on the
"internet" acted like...."
We should put in messages letting them know we are not as stupid as many of the messages may make us seem. - cdreiling, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I would write, "Sorry for leaving junk in space. We ran out of space down here."
- Dradis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Message reads:
"Yeah, we know your DVD player is set to the wrong region to play our glass discs. Sorry." - elpayo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"Sorry."
- dj_sea2005, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4another one:
"you opened this time capsule and all you got was this crappy message" - dj_sea2005, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4i would write:
"whats the broadband speeds like in the future? i bet you can get some wicked torrent speeds"
or
"have you guys reached the end of the internet yet?" - ciphex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"These aren't the droids you're looking for."
- DoubtfulSalmon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3There is another theory that says this has already happened.
- SugarCoatedBomb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Your binary has bad grammar.
- DoubtfulSalmon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3> This time capsule would be censored down to a cave drawing.
When compared to whatever technology might be around then, it probably will look like a cave drawing looks to us! - MasterDwarf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Awesome.
