http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Inner_Light_(TNG_ ... - anubis2night, on 06/25/2009, -0/+18ironically it was found at prehistoric band camp
- elijahyossie, on 06/25/2009, -0/+14Fascinating discovery - it seems to confirm how intrinsic enjoyment of music is for people.
- ApokalypseNow, on 06/25/2009, -1/+11Well that's nice - now, when we use science instead of mythology to find the age of the earth, we come up with about 4.54 billion years old, give or take a few million.
- inactive, on 06/25/2009, -0/+10A+++ would read again.
- Waiting2awake, on 06/25/2009, -0/+8and how long we have been enjoying it.
35K years? I mean really, holy *****. - trentrezn0r, on 06/25/2009, -3/+10Wrong. This guy has the world's oldest flute: http://static.flickr.com/40/120744605_844e777e3f_m ...
It's a leprechaun flute. It was passed on to him through the generations of his family. - Smilodon, on 06/25/2009, -1/+7No, Earth is a giant supercomputer built by Deep Thought to find out the exact wording og question of life, universe and everything else, ie question to which anser is 42.
What do you mean it's complete nonsense and I have no evidence?! There's a book that says so! You will burn in hell blasphemer! - ApokalypseNow, on 06/25/2009, -1/+7Um, no. If the flute is made from bone, provided that the bone did not come from an aquatic creature, then they can do radiocarbon dating on it. There's no circular logic involved there, as we can independently verify radiocarbon isotope decay to exact years by way of tree rings and ice core samples.
- LilJimmyNordin, on 06/25/2009, -0/+6"Rarely?" Is it not Pride week where you are? I'm in Toronto, and it's a good thing the skin flute is a silent instrument, or the whole city would sound like a parking lot for calliopes.
- mattmollysdad, on 06/25/2009, -1/+7great post
- PBRbeer, on 06/25/2009, -14/+19But the earth is only 6,000 years old..... how can that be!!!!!!!!!!! :-D :-D :-D
- gill003, on 06/25/2009, -0/+5By looking at it.
- FoxFaction, on 06/25/2009, -0/+4I hope humans are still around in 35,000 years. If we are, then technology is going to be out-of-this-world ridiculous. Just think how much society has changed since 35,000 years ago, then realize 35,000 years from now will be several orders of magnitude more insane than the last 35k. Even describing 1000 years in the future seems almost impossible, given the rate of technological progress.
- Leviathan433, on 06/25/2009, -0/+3I wonder if the flute will still be around in another 35,000 years. I wonder what else will be around in 35,000 years!
- inactive, on 06/25/2009, -2/+5the two of you have failed the test. BURN IN RIGHTEOUS FIRE!
- SlowFreshOil, on 06/25/2009, -10/+13For you Christians out there, that dates the flute to 8 years ago...
- mikeinto, on 06/25/2009, -4/+7Even the stone age had its version of Ron Burgundy and his jazz flute. This discovery is is the coolest frickin find in quite awhile.
- inactive, on 06/25/2009, -0/+3Don't be such a negative bitch.
- Kapitaine, on 06/25/2009, -5/+8Amazing.
Early humans showing how ***** was done 33,000 years before Christ. - FoxFaction, on 06/25/2009, -1/+4I hate to be the irony police, but that is not ironic in any way. However it was a cool-sounding way to start a sentence.
- LilJimmyNordin, on 06/25/2009, -0/+3I disagree. It's like rain on your wedding day... It's a free ride when you've already paid... It's the good advice that you just didn't take...
Isn't it ironic?
Don'tcha think? - Robronco07, on 06/25/2009, -0/+2Looks like a recorder to me...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nda_OSWeyn8 - askantik, on 06/25/2009, -0/+2Cats and many other animals sensitivity to hearing is much different than ours. Perhaps our music just sounds like droning to them. Maybe they need something higher or lower to enjoy. Or maybe they're just one of those lame people you meet that says, "Eh, I really don't like music that much."
- goobly, on 06/25/2009, -2/+4heh... "bone flute"
- inigomntoya, on 06/25/2009, -0/+2There's a gay joke in here somewhere. I just need to find it...
- motionblur, on 06/25/2009, -1/+3How Patrick Stewart never got an Emmy for that performance is beyond me. The same goes for the Chain of Command episodes.
- Lawlmuffin, on 06/25/2009, -5/+7God just put it there to test us. Remember? /s
- Colecoman1982, on 06/25/2009, -0/+2In 35,000 years, kids may laugh at us for having hands...
- reportermilan, on 06/25/2009, -0/+2There is a dispute about the oldest instrument:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Divje_Babe_flute - MRavioli, on 06/25/2009, -1/+3In other news, Jethro Tull has been around much longer than previously thought.
- FoxFaction, on 06/25/2009, -0/+2It really makes one wonder why. Something about our frontal lobes must give us a knack for temporally sequencing things at regular intervals. It's always amazed me how little my cat (or any other animal) seems to care about music.
- crackrockutah, on 06/25/2009, -0/+2I'm wondering if their are any anthropologists out there who might be able to help me out on this one. I have always been under the impression that the first instruments ever played were that of percussion. It would also seem logical that drumming, or even tapping in any semblance of rhythm would pre-date a hand carved flute. Is it just that the drums have not survived thus; this flute is the earliest instrument, or is it that things have changed since I last heard. If you have an article that could be read over or even a book that you recommend it would certainly be appreciated.
- tatumi, on 06/25/2009, -0/+2In 35,000 years, kids will laugh at us for using hands playing video arcades
- Liberame999, on 06/25/2009, -0/+2This is Die Zauberflöte
- groo68, on 06/25/2009, -1/+2zapkiller that joke is 6000 years old.
- hybridcreation, on 06/25/2009, -1/+2Fred must have dropped it on his way back from band night at the lodge.
- inigomntoya, on 06/25/2009, -0/+1No. I was talking about MY skin flute. Which is rarely played... :(
- Navicerts, on 06/25/2009, -0/+1That's what I thought when I read the description of a "bird bone flute". Upon looking at the flute I disreguaerded that notion because it looked surprisingly obvious.
- inigomntoya, on 06/25/2009, -0/+1Not to be confused with the rarely played "skin flute"
- Leviathan433, on 06/26/2009, -0/+1Eh, it only takes about 500-700 years for plastics to break down.
