- dolphumous, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3What do you think will happen to your übercar when there's a 50mph broad side wind gust?
Fall down go boom. - Wiggles2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'll take a 330MPG Honda Insight.
- ledavee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I truly don't understand why people are criticizing this car and/or immediately writing it off. Because you think it looks "fugly" or faux futuristic? Read the article, friends: It's built purely to maximize efficiency and aerodynamics; and I agree with the article when it says physics and math happen to look very sleek in this case. Also, it may appear flimsy, but obviously it isn't. This is the promise of composite materials: strong and light. Airplanes are being made out of the same material. And sure it will be light; but cars are built heavy not because they need to be or for safety reasons, but because the materials are so damn heavy. This car isn't going to be blown over by a gust of wind.
Or people are upset about poor acceleration...!! Come on, people; it's an f'n 330mpg car. Don't you understand what that means?
For one, I'm extremely excited about this vehicle. I think it has a world of potential. Sure, it might turn into a failure, but a little optimism please. Let's show companies and corporations that there is a demand for innovation! - Calculon64, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2opec is going to have these guys killed
- tryferos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The day I see it available at the local dealership is the day that I dont call BS! Cars like this been talked about, with nothing ever happening...
- chromo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1that car looks friggin awsome. i cant stand cars today, they all bore me. you always see some new car commercial and its supposed a "revolution" but then it just looks like every other car out there, do they know that? granted im not old enough to appreciate the old classics but i can tell what looks simalar. now when is this thing coming out?
- Beanlover, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I wonder what that will look like when a Hummer doesn't see it and runs it over. Will the driver of the Hummer feel it or just think it's a pothole?
As a semi-commuter I would love to be able to get that kind of milage. I could go a week on one gallon! :) - spookybathtub, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Cars like this exist. But big oil companies with lots of money and influence on car dealerships don't like them. Oil companies also have influence with the United States government (ahem George Bush), so alternative fuel has very little funding.
- Intensecure, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1One good gust of wind, and it becomes a kite.
But at least someone is thinking forwards, because we are going to run out of oil before we all get smart. - Nerys, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Exactly that means cheap insurance :-)
I want one and I want it badly ! I commute daily 7 miles to and from work 5 days a week. the ohter 2 days my job takes me 90minutes each way but for those other 5 days I could go some 30-40 DAYS on a single gallon of gas. I could definately live with that and as for safety ? its got a safety cage driver cab and its certaintly safer than my mountain bike :-)

- plefno, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'll believe this when I see one running. Even if they actually made the car, I really really really doubt it'd go for under $20,000. Too sensational to be true.
- knoppy44, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0god thats an ugly car, they should make a car with composites that looks like a regular car instead
- gamekid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Looks like a fat fried potato chip.
I don´t what to be driving a gigantic Pringles to go to work everyday."
I LIKE Pringles you insensitive clod!
Their ugly website, http://www.acceleratedcomposites.com/ , reminds me of those of two other--*ahem* how to put it nicely--"investor-focused" companies...

http://www.moller.com/ - coilx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I still want one of those skateboards from "Back to the Future"
I am still baffled that with all these leaps we make in technology we still can't find a way to burn cars on H20 - I mean really. Is it really that hard to extract hydrogen out of water? Unreal.
digg++ for the environment - orangetiki, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0can anyone that's over 5'5 use that car?
- Teratogen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0kind of reminds me of Buckminster Fuller's Dymaxion Car
- frequencyone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Das über Auto!
- aznboi04k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0sounds dangerous. it will never pass the highway safety test.
- nkthen, on 10/22/2007, -0/+0Biodiesel is a good alternative for those who don't want hybrid cars. These sites can shed some light to the issues:
http://www.biodieselathome.net
http://www.hybridcarsmoney.com - syyykko, on 06/03/2008, -0/+0actually they have a prototype...
- syyykko, on 06/03/2008, -0/+0actually it is...3 wheels = motorcycle
- pheifdog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0sure it sounds nice but who the hell wants to be driveing down the highway with that. no im getting a viper baby.
- s.lucero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've got a nickel that says this isn't going to happen.....
- whisperedlie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0that would be awesome, but man does that thing look awful. plus, that thing has to be a bitch to drive cuz of the light weight. being super light isn't completely a good thing.
that thing looks like if it got hit by a truck, it'd fling through the air like a football during a punt. - MelvinSchlubman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"can anyone that's over 5'5 use that car?"
No. Also not if you're over 5'5, since over-55'ers are required to drive a Buick, Oldbmobile, or Cadillac (at least here in the US). - raknight, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0One word: AWESOME!
- januarys, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i like the idea that if it fails, we can say "aptera... more like the CRAPTERA!!!"
that was really not a lot of thinking ahead on their part. they may as well have named it the Etard.
(no offense no offense) - duggster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0recently emailed the company. they plan to make it in 2-3 years
- bobbknight, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0OK if I don't have to plug it in and when I can drive one down I-5 in Carlsbad, I will buy one for 20 G's.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Listen, here's my thoughts. Its great that you can get a 330MPG car, but if your car does not look like a car, how can you expect the average consumer to buy it? If you are going to market a car, make it look like a car!
- MisterNipples, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nice press release from dreamers.
Sounds like they need investors and are trying to drum up some media coverage.
I'll digg on the concept, but reluctantly. - ApplePenguin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"decent" performance, meaning it'll kick my minivan's ass....
- oyourmom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0question is, "can i put a tv/dvd/computer/satellite/high speed internet/neon lights/high bright blue LED's/4 amps, and still play playstation 3 without the battery running out or running out of space?"
- Coppertop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My first and most major problem with this car is that: I don't want to be seen in it. It looks pretty ugly.
- bkmbr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Looks like a fat fried potato chip.
I don´t what to be driving a gigantic Pringles to go to work everyday. - Frinkahedron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Is it really that hard to extract hydrogen out of water? Unreal." Currently, yes. It would take more energy to extract the hydrogen with electricity than to use gas. The only way this can be reversed is to use nuclear power to extract hydrogen, but a new one of those hasn't been built in over 30 years ;)
- psbp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Can it go underwater?
- rajkalex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Now, imagine it hitting a retaining wall at 30mph as in a NTSB test. Then imagine the need for a dustpan to clean up the remnants.... Dream over. Still a cool concept.
- Wiggles2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Who cares what it looks like if it gets 330MPG?! Do I have to point out that that's a 10-15 fold increase from what we get now? I bet all of you who deride it as ugly would be first in line for one if gas were $7 a gallon or more.rnrnAnd it may come to that -- http://lifeaftertheoilcrash.net/ , rnunless Randell Mills can save us all -- http://www.guardian.co.uk/science/story/0,3605,1627424,00.html
- brownman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0even if a car like this is to be created i doubt it will be under 20,000
- jasonherald, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I would totally buy that. Even if it is so ugly.
However I couldn't imagine how the Oil industry would allow something like this to come to fruition. - mhinckley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0In the probable words of the Comicbook Guy- "Worst design, ever."
- tmiller51, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0For me, the last line of the article sheds some doubt on the whole thing:
"Founder Steve Fambro said he built robots that made DNA before turning his attention to the automotive market.". - B0jangles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That really is one of the most hideous cars i've seen. Who cares if it does 330 miles to the gallon. Its not alot of use if its gone and had the wheels stolen, and trashed because it is so ugly!
Good technology but no one is going to buy it purely on its looks. - hppyfngy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0they'll never make it
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wish i drove this
- Chewie67, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It will never get produced.
The company will be bought by GM or Exxon for some ridiculous amount that the owners can't turn down, and the car will never make it into production. - mark_in_bc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0And it runs on water man. A digg for a laugh.
