- inactive, on 04/10/2009, -3/+57We need more gay people.
- jbradl, on 04/10/2009, -4/+50It's sad. My wife and I have decided to not have children for this reason. The worst part is we are called "selfish" all of the time for our decision.
- FirstCuts, on 04/10/2009, -0/+40Reserve the good pods now.
- Kosh, on 04/10/2009, -0/+35No. The sun's energy provides for the chemical reactions in photosynthesis, which are balanced.
- cyrusuncc, on 04/10/2009, -2/+31It's over 9000!!
- annjay, on 04/10/2009, -8/+34The increase in population in current years is too high. I probably think, we will have more crowded earth in 2050 than 2009.
- oteque, on 04/10/2009, -6/+32Will the earth become heavier? hahah silly question <3
- inactive, on 04/10/2009, -0/+25Commence Operation: Condom Airdrop immediately!
- teknomaker18, on 04/10/2009, -2/+21We're doomed. GG everyone.
- fadetoone, on 04/10/2009, -2/+20So there will be more people on Earth in 2050 than in 2009? You're kidding me. I had no idea!
- AsSubtleAsABrik, on 04/10/2009, -1/+18Have you thought about adoption? I would if I felt so strongly about population control as you and your wife do. I know adopting isn't always very easy, but it's probably worth it.
Personally I really like the idea of someone carrying on my families name. And adopted children are no less yours than biological one. - eastwood24, on 04/10/2009, -2/+19"The most powerful force in the universe is compound interest" - Albert Einstein
The same can be said for compunding population growth.
This five minute video really puts it into perspective:
http://www.chrismartenson.com/crashcourse/chapter- ... - ousthouse, on 04/10/2009, -1/+18Does it get lighter every time we send stuff to space?
- simpleid, on 04/10/2009, -2/+17Obviously the earth is *not a closed system. Crap from space is falling on to earth regularly, just as we intentionally (more frequently in time) lift things off of the earth and send it in to orbit, or out in to space (Voyager 1 and 2, etc...).
/face-palm - inactive, on 04/10/2009, -6/+21If this educational problem goes too far without being corrected, there should be heavy taxing / fee charging to people going to their second or third child. And if they can't afford it, they can abort in the first weeks of pregnancy and take home a pack of free condoms.
I hate prohibition or penalties, but if education doesn't solve certain problems, then you have to start penalizing bad social decisions. - inactive, on 04/10/2009, -2/+17you *****.
- norman619, on 04/10/2009, -1/+16No worries. With those population densities wars will be more common which serve to thin out the herd a bit.
- gilbert42989, on 04/10/2009, -1/+15how can you digg this guy down?
- inactive, on 04/10/2009, -3/+17we're talking about the earth, not america.
- thinkb4utype, on 04/10/2009, -2/+15Can you imagine how long the lines will be?
- JammoBlammo, on 04/10/2009, -1/+14As long as they're hot, hot ladies.
- moirende, on 04/10/2009, -2/+15Ah, this old canard again. Why are so many people so invested in doomsday scenarios, especially when they never seem to come true? Fact is: as nations grow wealthier their birth rates drop. Of all the "first world" countries out there, virtually only the US has a birth rate that exceeds population replacement, and even then not by much. Most other "rich" counties are growing only through immigration now, and some (e.g., Japan) are dealing with population contraction. As China, India, Brazil, etc. etc. achieve higher standards of living this trend will take hold in those places, too. That, coupled with ongoing advances in technology enabling us to make better use of arable (and even less-than-arable) land means disaster is hardly upon us. Quite the opposite, in fact. Prediction: 50 years from now everyone will be wringing their hands about de-population and it's negative impacts.
- offrdbandit, on 04/10/2009, -1/+13As despicable as such a approach might be, it's far more logical than the schizophrenic "let's help everyone then panic about the population exploding" alternative presented by some.
- inactive, on 04/10/2009, -5/+179 billion is a huge number. Will we be living on top of each other?
- snoogit, on 04/10/2009, -1/+12the gigantic boobs are from chicks getting fat.
- novenator, on 04/10/2009, -7/+18This may be the most conservative estimate out there. Malthus was right, exponential human population growth is suffocating the planet, and resource depletion will create chaos in the coming decades.
- schnikies79, on 04/10/2009, -0/+10sex =/= children
- Wreckage, on 04/10/2009, -3/+13Well more people crammed into an area means that an earthquake that would have flattened a few farm houses in 1950, will wipe out the million people living there in 2050.
Not to mention how much faster a plague could spread today.
Nature has been doing population control for years, just ask the Dinosaurs. - moose26, on 04/10/2009, -1/+11Its funny how this selfish word is being used. Currently myself like others have been hit really hard with the economic crisis. I honestly would not want to bring a child into this world if they could not be decently provided for. When I was being brought up 35 years ago things were alot better.
I did get questioned by someone who blurted out that I was selfish for delaying or tentatively saying I did not think I would have a child. My response was along the lines... So, I am selfish for not adding another life to this world due to my own more dire economic situation where I am holding my ground, but definitely not ready. She barked off that you will always find a way and its your duty.
I walked away as politely as I could. Yeah, my parents can attest to the great job of bringing up a child in good times, but they agree with my current decision to get financially stable first. - dmbhaggis, on 04/10/2009, -1/+11I know whats not right...your caps lock button
- winelips, on 04/10/2009, -2/+11come on, do people really call you selfish? i opted out of breeding as well and all i ever get called is "lucky" and "smart".
- Akairenn, on 04/10/2009, -6/+15Don't worry, I have this plan for buildings with many stories. I call them 'skyscrapers'. So to answer your question, yes, we will be living atop each other.
Except for, you know, the massive goddamned swaths of non-Rainforest land that are virtually devoid of people and sitting everywhere outside of cities in the US.
The world isn't overpopulated. Deal with it. - inactive, on 04/10/2009, -2/+11Girls, this is your cue to start trying anal.
- saltydawkins, on 04/10/2009, -3/+12That's the same reason I chose not to have kids, and I too get called selfish. I honestly don't get it, I think it's WAY more selfish to breed.
- failtrain, on 04/10/2009, -0/+8GG
- eastwood24, on 04/10/2009, -1/+9Look at the oceans' fish supply over the last five decades and reconcile that with your statement.
Fully 90 percent of each of the world's large ocean species, including cod, halibut, tuna, swordfish and marlin, has disappeared from the world's oceans in recent decades, according to the Canadian analysis -- the first to use historical data dating to the beginning of large-scale fishing, in the 1950s. - trendyme, on 04/10/2009, -2/+10<3
- eastwood24, on 04/10/2009, -1/+9Mother nature also holds a trump card.
- Brak710101, on 04/10/2009, -1/+9eramos, that is not even close to true.
Kosh is correct. - inactive, on 04/10/2009, -0/+7Heavier in the hippie sense of the word:
Heavy, man. Really heavy. - saltydawkins, on 04/10/2009, -2/+9I hate to sound harsh, but do you have a better resolution? Resource depletion alone will cause war and genocide.
- Samurai77, on 04/10/2009, -3/+10I applaud you!
- ReluctantZer0, on 04/10/2009, -1/+8It's from Dragon Ball. Their power levels are OVER 9,000!!1!
But I think someone else who knows the show might explain it better - dhughes, on 04/10/2009, -1/+7Canada is the second largest country in the world and we only have about 35 million people, just Mexico City alone has 20 million people!
There's plenty of room, well, if you don't mind -40C to -60C in some of the more northerly places, which means anywhere 100 miles north of the Canadian/US border.
By the way it will soon be easy to spot the border with all the pilot-less drones flying over it! - inactive, on 04/10/2009, -0/+6@saltydawkins -- there is a better resolution: paradigm shift. Reduce population by *voluntary* reduction of birth rate. Several industrialized nations have already managed to achieve negative population growth by this means, proving that it is indeed possible. Using our brains to prevent the problem would be far better than letting the problem reach critical mass, leaving unimaginable strife and suffering in its wake.
What will it take? Massive global efforts to improve education and infrastructure, and the propagation of rational ideas in place of destructive dogmas about the role of humanity as a component of Earth's ecosphere. The formation of more sane governments with sane policies would follow.
You may say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one... - inactive, on 04/10/2009, -1/+7I don't understand the "idea of someone carrying on my families name".
When you are dead, what will it matter if there are a lot of your descendants running around with the same last name as you? - graccus, on 04/10/2009, -0/+6Meteors~
- elliotmah, on 04/10/2009, -0/+6You'll have to quell certain religious views on contraception first I'm afraid.
