"This guy called my mother a whore. Oh wait, he was kidding. There's a smiley face." - Greg0ry, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4OMG This happens all the freakin time with my girlfriend and I, i'm always like it will sound better when we were on the phone, or in person. Then when we do talk, everything sounds 100 better, the internet has start so many fights, because someone took your text the wrong way.
- RyeBrye, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4to ThugEsquire: Maybe the fact that I submitted it 10 hours earlier than you when everyone was in bed is the reason your submission made it to the top... The only reason that your URL wouldn't have been flagged by Digg is because you didn't strip off the "?tw=rss.index" from the end of the URL. I'm quite certain that Digg would have pulled up the original submission when you went to submit.
Jealousy isn't really the issue. The issue is that putzes like you litter digg with your dupes, and because that behavior is rewarded it continues. The fact that it happened to be a story that I originally submitted only makes me slightly more angry about it.
Do what you SHOULD do when you try to submit a story that is already there. Digg the original one and go try to find something else to submit. - cypresso, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I once did a research paper for a communications class on computer mediated communication. It basically said the same thing. Every one who uses electronic communication believes they are getting their point accross perfectly, but find that they are often misunderstood. Reason being that the is a lack of paralanguage (non-spoken communications like tone and volume, facial expression, etc...). MOst people that use sarcastic remarks generally encounter this. What i found most interesting was that people generally notice that they got wrong impressions from people during the first month or so of communication, and then they felt they from there on were much better of as electronic communicators.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Um misleading title at best.
people don't understand tone in messages doesn't mean they dont understand 1/2 the messages. A majority of mine are direct. If i TM someone to meet me at the club at 8. not only do they know what i mean, they even know it is pm and not am. Tone does get mistaken especially on long comments and sarcasm is very hard to get across in a TM
While i believe things get misunderstood all the time.. 50% is just not realistic..
I bet 50% of all statistics are misinterpreted. - genduke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2=)
There's no misunderstanding that.
Talking textually is like any means of communication in the sense it takes time to learn to do it effectively. You can also communicate more effectively if you know the recipient and know how they perceive things. Smilies and emoticons help if you know how to use them.
Bear in mind know one hears that little voice in your head while you type, and all the emotion you hear in that voice. Writing is a skill and it takes time; those who put time into honing that skill will be understood more often than, say, 50% of the time. In American society at least, the skill of writing isn't exactly something people give much attention to.
Just my 0.093 shekels. - stoops, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The descrtiption made me think of anchorman...
"Brian Fantana: [holding the bottle of Sex Panther] They've done studies you know- 60% of the time, it works every time.
[cheesy grin]
Ron Burgundy: That doesn't make any sense. "
anyways im too lazy to read. - CadMasterAdam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1nice to find some stats that confirm my confusion when someone responds WTF? in a conversation.
- SinclairFRE, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've encountered a lot of people whose rule of thumb seems to be ''never attribute to a mistake what you can to malice''.

Cu-cu-cookie cucu-cu-cookie! - mark1372, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You mean they're NOT really laughing out loud?
- ninepoundjammer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yep,
I'm not allowed to write emails to outside collaborators anymore :) - DNABeast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The trick is to assume that the person posting is sitting in the back of a high backed chair swilling a balloon of brandy. Then, whenever you're reading something offensive you can't imagine them meaning it that way so you assume that you're mis-interpreting it.
- admirabumblebee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've been laughing for way too long @ genduke's comment.
Funniest thing I've ever seen on digg.com
kudos mate! - joshrt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think I misunderstood that article.
- shiftless, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If this were true, text messaging wouldn't be the success it is.
- xt0ph3r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Horrible title. Try: "Studies indicate that senders don't know how to indicate sarcasm in text, half the time." or something.
I know that's too long, but the one used here is sensational and misleading. - stonebear, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There is a lot to this. I use e-mail at work only when I can’t avoid it, and then it’s usually to ask the person to call me. There are more people who are only semi-literate than you’d think, and many of them are executives who have nothing better to do than make trouble over nothing.
- zombiedog, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2These simple assicons will drive the point home ;-)
(_!_) = a regular ass.
(__!__) = a fat ass.
(!) = a tight ass.
(_*_) = a sore ass.
{_!_} = a swishy ass.
(_o_) = an ass that's been around.
(_x_) = kiss my ass.
(_X_) = leave my ass alone.
(_zzz_) = a tired ass.
(_E=mc2_) = a smart ass.
(_$_) = Money coming out of his ass.
(_?_) = A dumb ass. - CoffeeCup, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My girlfriend does this... At the same time, those reading messages unconsciously interpret them based on their current mood, stereotypes and expectations.
- genduke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0*no
- benguri, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0also, my most common phrase is "f*ck off" and most peeps understand what i mean :)
- AeonTorpor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That's why you ask, "Do you understannnn?!".
- afred, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0now this is a digg. you never know for sure what the tone is. I have been wrong on many occasions.
- breakneckridge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What do you mean by that?
- Guder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Only half the time? I'd say it's closer to most the time.

http://maddox.xmission.com/sa/jeffk.html - daRoach, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Further proof of the need for a sarcasm button on a keyboard. Kinda like the Caps Lock, you just click it on when you want to be sarcastic.
- hugoh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Most people can't write clearly. Obviously, they'll be misunderstood.
- DJFMA, on 10/12/2007, -0/+01 in 2 chance? Well isn't it obvious: You're either right, or wrong.

- ThugEsquire, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1to ryebrye: I guess that you and the other guy who submitted this link had a little trouble summarizing the content of the story. No wonder my submission pwned everyone else's. Anyway, digg didn't even say that the URL had been submitted already. I guess you're just jealous.
- ziffel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0FYI, people who respond with an "O RLY" get auto-blocked.
- tek1024, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@ mister.joshua
Hilariously well-put. - mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i always try to make sure to look at something i write from the other person's perspective. i know most people don't do this, and it shows.
- uWergo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+080% of all statistics are made up
- cualexander, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well the crux of the issue here is that the study used phrases that could possibly be misunderstood if taken out of context. If I say, "I'm going to lunch at 12", there isn't much to be misunderstood.
But if, on the other hand, I say "That food was alright." In real life, I could use a vocal inflection where "alright" equals "not so good". But in the email, you have to guess whether "alright" just means "fairly good".
I feel that if you properly expound upon your statements, however, and do not make things intentionally vague, then your communication is very much more likely to be understood way more than 50% of the time.
I guess it also depends on how well you know the recipient, and a host of other factors.
The moral of the story is to not use sarcastic statements with people you don't know. And be especially wary of emailing people of different countries, because the possibility of phrases being taken out of context is immensely greater in those circumstances. - Gatesophile, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Further proof of the need for a sarcasm button on a keyboard. Kinda like the Caps Lock, you just click it on when you want to be sarcastic." -daroach
I completely agree. We definately need a sarcasm button! - rtfx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The study appears to be flawed because it doesn't factor in writing ability. The correspondents were given their messages, but who wrote the messages?
- frickindeal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0
Everyone always understands my messages 100% of the time. - jmann, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0boyakasha!

I say 30%
1)PEOPLE HAVE NO PATIENCE.
2) PEOPLE DON'T READ
3) People tend to get wordy .(i.e. blah blah) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I hate this pronoun abuse:
"Study shows that even though the sender will expect YOU to understand their tone and meaning 80% of the time, YOU'LL really only understand them about 50% of the time."
What the *****? Seriously. No study of this nature is ever going to determine jack ***** about ME. Nobody tested ME! Can you correctly interpret that, *****?!
Replace "you" with "average American" or whatever group was sampled, and then you might have something somewhat reasonable. This pronoun abuse, though, really pisses me off. It follows a paradigm typical of Wired, BoingBoing, Metafilter, and other Moonbat publications. Just the other day Cory Doctorow wrote, "Our music preferences are driven by the crowd as much as taste." Well, maybe yours are, *****, but I don't give a ***** what other people think! And just read the archives on MetaFiler for oodles and oodles of pronoun abuse. One imagines these ***** might read an article about a study that shows 58% of Americans like gay sex and say to themselves, "Gee...I never thought about it before, but I guess I am a big flaming *****."
"study test subjects" not "our" you *****:
http://www.boingboing.net/2006/02/09/our_music_preference.html
And I'm just getting started on the pronouns. If I commented on any other aspect of this post and article, I might have to kill someone! Or a whole race of people! 111!!!! - layeroffrost, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0heh....sarcasm button...mine would be worn out within a week. it is true, though, i have found a lot of people don't understand sarcasm over means of IM unless you specify or use a smiley/emoticon.
- benguri, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Statistically (ok, ok) only 1/2 of you will agree with this, but..."meta-language" or "para-language"? I agree wholeheartedly that "simple" text communication is not enough and I usually use emoticons in personal mail. It's much harder in a business context and so I have this vague theory that "business speak" (y'know: "target based validation points", "user-centric systems") arises from this.
Plus, there should be a good understanding of Grammar (I do not say I do, grammar-nazis) and Syntax, regardless of the language targetted. This also makes is hard to communicate on "teh internet" as for many people, English is not the 1st language.
Anyway, I feel I have made my point by grammaticking badly, spelling wrong, and generaly syntactually erroneous. As well as not rhyming on the iambic dipthong etc... - breakneckridge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0;) was created for exactly this purpose. Use it!
