Watch for it on prisonplanet.... - Gerz1219, on 01/24/2008, -28/+178Clearly God intelligently designed her blood type to spontaneously change in response to environmental changes.
- zKman, on 01/24/2008, -6/+109im in ur blood, changin ur typez
-liver - FyreGoddess, on 01/24/2008, -4/+98This is really interesting, but I want more details. Specifically what type did she start with and what type does she have now?
- has2k1, on 01/24/2008, -6/+62The BloodChanger has revealed herself. We must protect her, for the secret of our future existence will be revealed by her second born son.
- sgiffy, on 01/24/2008, -0/+43Not really. Evolution is change between generations, not with an individual. This is just regular old biology.
- tmlee, on 01/24/2008, -4/+43Blood type changes happen with bone marrow transplants all the time. What is weird is that she probably has two blood types now: one from her original stem cells, and one from her donor stem cells from the liver.
- inactive, on 01/25/2008, -1/+39I somehow feel that Dr. House was involved in this
- solidus636, on 01/24/2008, -0/+35"The rare phenomenon now means Demi no longer has to take a cocktail of anti-rejection drugs for the rest of her life."
So, no drugs... - Herbie555, on 01/24/2008, -3/+36FTA: "Nine months later they discovered she had changed blood types and that her immune system had switched over to that of the donor after stem cells from the new liver migrated to her bone marrow. "
Boy, I'm sure glad we've banned any further government funded research into Stem Cells. It sure would suck if we had a better understanding how that whole thing worked. Its not like it would be useful for heart transplants or anything else...
- r1y23, on 01/24/2008, -5/+31She was touched by his noodly apendage
- error2k2, on 01/24/2008, -3/+29Crap, now someone has to protect her from Sylar in order to save the world. Where's a geeky Japanese dude when you need him?
- Takran, on 01/24/2008, -3/+29Go ahead and take a seat right over there.
- Filipp0, on 01/25/2008, -0/+23Just called House and told him about this, he says it's lupus
- norman619, on 01/24/2008, -0/+23Well... Back in biblical days that was sage advice taking into account the state of medical science back then.
- tendonut, on 01/24/2008, -4/+26I went O to o............O o?
- razorsedge555, on 01/24/2008, -1/+22That's intense. I wonder if I can have a liver transplant and become blonde. I mean, drapes and carpet.
- inactive, on 01/24/2008, -2/+23to much anime for you
- joshman5k, on 01/24/2008, -1/+21she went from O- to O+
- chilipeppers4u, on 01/25/2008, -0/+19She changed from O- to O+ and was able to discontinue all immunosupressive therapy - below are some excerpts from the New England Journal of Medicine article (358(4), 369-374, I can't link directly to it).
Complete hematopoietic chimerism and tolerance of a liver allograft from a deceased male donor developed in a 9-year-old girl, with no evidence of graft-versus-host disease 17 months after transplantation. The tolerance was preceded by a period of severe emolysis, reflecting partial chimerism that was refractory to standard therapies. The hemolysis resolved after the gradual withdrawal of all immunosuppressive therapy.
Nine months after transplantation, a smallbowel obstruction developed, requiring surgical division of adhesions and resection of an ileal band. Routine preoperative blood grouping revealed that the patient’s blood group had changed from O, RhD-negative, to O, RhD-positive (the donor’s blood group), and a weakly positive direct antiglobulin test indicated coating of red blood cells with IgG antibodies. - CReyes4182, on 01/24/2008, -1/+16I can't tell if your being sarcastic.
- razorsedge555, on 01/24/2008, -0/+14and this is a bad thing? then i can run for Congress.
- cbreaker, on 01/24/2008, -5/+19Another missing detail is if she needs to continue taking anti-rejection drugs. They talk about rejection, but the don't say if she still needs them after this happened.
I hate these types of news blurbs.. - Harbinger67, on 01/24/2008, -5/+19Clearly this comment was completely unnecessary.
- houndeyex, on 01/24/2008, -2/+14If you like purple hair and big teeth, then maybe.
http://www.news.com.au/entertainment/story/0,26278 ... - mal1964, on 01/24/2008, -1/+11Immunosuppressive drugs, are a hell of a drug!
- Myztry, on 01/24/2008, -2/+12Man designed God which is important as it created a whole lot of Myths to overcome...
- Ajenthavoc, on 01/25/2008, -0/+10As a fetus the liver has hematopoetic (blood forming) properties which later are taken over by bone marrow. In some people whose bone marrow isn't fully functional, the liver can regain its hematopoetic activity to compensate.
- hasahugedig, on 01/24/2008, -1/+11Proof. Your a dumbass.
- evodevo1, on 01/24/2008, -2/+11The article does not say which blood type she switched from and to. It is easier to imagine a person change from type O to any other blood type since type O is the absence of any blood antigen (you could simple acquire either A or B or AB antigens from the donor). However, the immune system still needs to tolerate the antigen which is quite surprising.
- mal1964, on 01/24/2008, -5/+14Sounds like a Abby Normal case.
- allatti2d, on 01/24/2008, -0/+9That's nothing a little blood-letting wouldn't solve.
- PurpleSfinx, on 01/25/2008, -0/+8Seriously, though, here in Australia we don't have enough organ donors. They don't just let you sign up easily when you get your driver's licence like in other countries, so alot of people don't bother. That being said, it's just a matter of filling out a form and sending it - reply paid - to the Australian Organ Donor Register.
So comeon, wherever you are - become an organ donor (And hey, a blood donor too while you're at it!). You won't need them.
One day your liver might make the front page! - norman619, on 01/24/2008, -2/+10Yes I blame the Geo Orbital Device as well.
- rnwen2750, on 01/24/2008, -4/+12The Bible also says not to eat fish or shave your beard...
- cruzlee, on 01/24/2008, -4/+12Or the mother trying to cover up something involving the milkman.
- JoeVet, on 01/24/2008, -0/+8God was her surgeon? That must've been a big bill!
- ChaosProfessor, on 01/25/2008, -1/+8the one in the back is cute
- epu2, on 01/24/2008, -0/+7* You're
- pingudownunder, on 01/25/2008, -0/+7oi oi oi
- TenebrousX, on 01/24/2008, -0/+7or just people who understand evolution
- norman619, on 01/24/2008, -4/+11The Greeks and the Romans had their own religion as well. What do we call it now? Oh yes Mythology. I predict today's religions will suffer a similar fate in the future.
- nardville, on 01/24/2008, -0/+7She must be on Mohinder Suresh's list.
- solarsavior, on 01/25/2008, -5/+11An intelligent design would be the use of only one blood type...
- mascot4hire, on 01/25/2008, -0/+6same thing
- Creamzsoda, on 01/25/2008, -0/+6I'm a little ignorant in biology as I'm not a doctor, but if her immune system truely switched to the donor's entirely, wouldn't it essentially put the REST of her body at risk for rejection? Wouldn't the donor's immune system believe the rest of her body to be foreign and try to attack it?
- locriology, on 01/25/2008, -2/+8Maybe someone was busy showing her his O-face.
- kooft, on 01/25/2008, -1/+7Hmm, a virus destroyed her liver and in her fight for life the donated liver triggered her body to attack its own blood cells. Only the remotest of odds saved her life and prevented her from being on anti-rejection drugs for the rest of her life and all you can say is "She is pretty heinous"? You are truly the most pathetic person I've run across in all my years.
Pray that you're never afflicted with some horrible disease and made fun of by some sad sack loser like yourself. - solidus636, on 01/25/2008, -1/+7Just because she has purple hair and wears a lot of black, doesn't make her emo...
- ChileanGoD, on 01/24/2008, -0/+6Mystique?
