- nights0223, on 10/12/2007, -13/+232RIP Dampe, may you lead Link to the hookshot wherever you are.
- calebhawk, on 10/12/2007, -18/+170geez guys have respet, who cares about the project, this guy is dead... RIP
- jfarquhar, on 10/12/2007, -3/+149I understand the grief fellow OOT2D creators and its community must be feeling right now, but I think people may be overreacting by saying to "never speak of OOT2D again" (on the forums).
If I had poured my heart and soul into a project like this, and it was cut short in such a tragic way, I think the best thing the co-creators and community could do after the grieving process is to finish the game, show the world the talent this young game creator had. What a tribute to his memory that would be. The work I have seen on this project has exceeded all my expectations, it is not simply another Zelda remake.
RIP Dampe - MoeWasHere, on 10/12/2007, -26/+159Woah - that's the same way they got rid of the dude who made the Virtual Boy. What are you up to Nintendo?
- ursername180, on 10/12/2007, -8/+88There are 2 OOT2d creators. Dampe and TheRealMethuselah. But this is so sad that he had to die. Let's just hope this is a horrible, horrible hoax.
- APHughes, on 10/12/2007, -7/+86It's disappointing because he had potential at that young of an age. He could've done alot with his talent.
- typobox43, on 10/12/2007, -10/+82No disrespect intended, but has anyone stopped to think that this could be a fake? It seems like it would be so easy to decide that you don't want to work on the project anymore and use this as an easy way to fade into the background without any trouble...
I'm not even saying that I necessarily believe that this is a fake, but the possibility has to be considered. If he really is dead, though, my best wishes go out to his family. This was a promising project, and we just hope that NOA didn't send out a hitman for him :) - ErrorS, on 10/12/2007, -3/+69Yeah, sounds so believable.. 15 year old kid who was in the process of completely rewriting OOT in 2D with one other person... died... The family specificaly asked for the site to be taken down hours after his death, all mention of OOT results in insta-ban and the project effectively dies.
I've also got a bridge I wanna sell?
It's not like I have enough information about what happened.. they immediately took down everything. What was the point? that hs to be the only forum I have ever visited that has done anything like this... I've had friends die, relatives die, etc and not a single time has anyone reacted so .. jesus, this whole situation is just so unreal I'm having trouble taking it seriously.
"My son just died.. this sucks, I'm sad.. but we shouldn't lose our heads, lets immediately shut down his minor website for the project he's working on, that's the first thing he would want us to do and it should be our top priority!"
Bull.. *****.. *****... If the mods thought it was a good idea that's one thing but for the family to ASK? It's either ***** or his family are seriously confused.. and this is taking into account the confusion that always follows after the death of someone close to you. - Tunguska, on 10/12/2007, -10/+73Dampe, rest in peace.
Tragically, ironically, wasn't Dampe the name of the old gravekeeper in OoT? - Drood, on 10/12/2007, -1/+60Oh good grief... Very sad, but WTF? Yes, go ahead and delete what would stand as a bloody good memorial for the guy.
- AndrewDB, on 01/10/2008, -0/+58I fully agree, finish the game, and make it a tribute to him.
- nreynolds, on 10/12/2007, -2/+49psh, his parents are being stupid. I know it's a tough time for them but this is exactly the opposite of what he would want.
- Micrll, on 10/12/2007, -0/+45Sadly it appears that the project is gone as well.
"Dampe's family has requested the site be brought down.
Do not ask about OOT2D, just respect Dampe' and don't.
Rest in peace buddy, you'll be missed."
From - http://www.monkeypro.net/oot2d/ - gmprunner, on 10/12/2007, -2/+40'91? He was that young?
- skryingbreath, on 10/12/2007, -0/+30Such a tragic story next to such a silly avatar - something isn't quite right here.
- Swifti, on 10/12/2007, -3/+28Phil Harrison and Peter Moore are next. Reggie wasn't kidding about kicking ass and taking names. :O
- EsIeX3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+24On the last page:
"I thank all of you for your support and your respect.
Unfortunatley, On March 21st, We lost our great man, Richard (Dampe)
The official police record has read that Richard was hit by a car that
had swurved on the wet road, the car WAS NOT speeding. Richard was knocked unconcious and shortly after passed away.
His last words to be known were to his trusting girlfriend when he was walking home from her house "I love you" with a great smile on his face.
Richard's family are having a tough time, as well as his friends, but we've all come to realise that there is a time in everyone's lives where you must move on.
I'm sure all of his close friends from the net (Christo, Monkeydog, Tani) and whoever else, also need to move on.
Everyone has there time to live, And everyone dies one day. The worst thing you can do is to not move on.
I thank all of you for your support and caring. I will be locking this topic after this post, And this will be the end of Dampe's "Oot2D." I suggest anyone wanting to stay in a community, move to http://www.monkeypro.net, Monkeydog has a great community, and he was also hosting Dampe's site.
Thankyou all again,
And forever,
R.I.P Richard Denton June 16th 1991 - March 21st 2007."
Guess it's true then...
BTW the game (demo) is still up on their site, but i'm not telling how to get it. Gotta respect the developer for this game... - nreynolds, on 10/12/2007, -2/+25yeah, I know they're sad and all but a lot of people are just posting dumb commets. Most of them didn't even know this kid and they're getting super defensive about everything. Oh well, whatever helps them with their dark poetry and eye-covering bangs.....
I'm very sad about this kid dying, don't get me wrong. A lot of these people are just stupid. - BrainDance, on 10/12/2007, -2/+25I'm gonna get dugg down here but,
The whole thing is highly suspect. It seems pretty bizarre for them to respond like this
"He died and I'm not going into details... so NEVER talk about his unfinished masterpiece"
Why not talk about it? How is it "disrespectful" or anything? I would want my work to be continued.
I dunno, theres a good chance this is real and thats terribly sad. I just don't know though. - Books, on 10/12/2007, -7/+29That's a pretty ***** up thing to do. Even by today's standard, it is really ***** up. He could have just said, ***** you im out...close the domain.
R.I.P. - pumacub, on 10/12/2007, -3/+24RIP
...
Why end the project that was obviously so important to him? It seems to disrespectful. - xenonflash, on 10/12/2007, -4/+22RIP. This disturbs me since I was born in 91 just like Dampe...
What I saw of the project looked awesome. - nreynolds, on 10/12/2007, -4/+22don't tell me how to live my life. If I wanna make my life worthlessly, accomplishing nothing, that's up to me.
- joper90, on 10/12/2007, -4/+20digg me down whatever.. but:
a) fake? loads of kids have done stupid ***** like this before, and faked death..its the internets
b) I think he just over estimated what he could do, and farked up, and then just kept digging and digging, he was like 15/16 after all, so prob had no idea how to actually make a game.
c) I knew 100% this would never be finished / playable
d) never speak of this again.. oh ffs fark off... I could do what he did in a month if so inclined. (Im a programmer and have been for years.. its my job), but i cannot be arsed to play oot to death to map out each single little bit, which is what i assume he did with his 2+ years.
if hes dead then rip. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19"Don't ask about OOT2D?"
Like we would go to his family and ask,
"Hey uh, sorry about your loss, but uh...HOW'S OOT2D COMIN'?"
I believe it's a fake. He just got tired and wanted to go out with a bang. - mrfreeziexp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16I agree, the project needs to be finished so it can be dedicated to him.
Rest in peace. - olddirtycr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15Wait hes only 15?
And the projects like 5 years old?
He started when he was 10?
Sounds like something he imagined would be cool in his mind, rolled along with the "fantasy" of a 2d ocarina of time, it built up hype and speculation but soon people wanted to see progress and he probably had none besides a few screen shots. Hes 15, and most likely his thought process is "i'll fake my death and finally get rid of this burden." I can't find any news articles stating "Richard denton" died. - Tourney3p0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15Victoria police tell me no deaths of anyone named Richard Denton.
Phone: (61 3) 9247 6666

So far, nothing. - bepe86, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14@ foxifiednutjob
No disrespect to them, but being a soldier myself (Norwegian armed forces), they're there on their own free will, fully aware of the dangers of their mission before they signed up. On the other hand, this death of a talented, young developer is nothing more than a tragedy. The most tragic thing, is the 12-year-old ***** who joke about this being fake just to leave the project. Two words for them. "***** you".
RIP. - montezumamike, on 10/12/2007, -4/+18It's not April first.
Damn it. - arrenlex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13The two mirrors are still up:

http://oot2d.mine.nu/
What a shame... so young. - joshww, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14If you really want the real story you should probably ask this guy.
monkeydogrm2k@gmail.com
He was the mod on the now closed site. - blaze03, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12The moment I saw this I also thought, "fake." I've seen several incidents of people on the internet faking their own deaths. The fact that he was involved in such a huge undertaking (and with it high expectations from tons of people) makes this even more likely.
- Nukem945, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11No disrespect to the guy, but his death shouldn't ruin a great idea that he and the OOT2D team had. I think a lot of people would still like to play a 2D OOT if it were ever made. You could add him into the credits as a tribute, but I don't think the project should die because of this. And if some other team decides to carry the torch, more power to them.
- samadam, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13damn, i sure do hope they are continuing with that game. it still looks like loads of fun. Those simple old-style games are great!
- muffins, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11My disbelief of this has been fueled a little after some searching about recent news in Melbourne or any car accidents near there in AU I haven't found anything except for a tunnel crash, but the age of everyone involved in it was 30+.
- daridave, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14OMG what a bunch of morons, laughing in the face of death. Couldn't you have gone instead of him? Anyway...
R.I.P. Dampe.
Wouldn't it be awesome if to his memory, maybe just maybe, someone out there [who knows how to] could do some sort of those petition-things to incite Nintendo to finish that work !? I know it's far-fetched, but would be great. - SuperMank, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Yeah, that's what I'm thinking too. I remember when OoT2D was first started by TheRealMethuselah years ago, using GameMaker. For something like two years he was "developing" the demo, and after all that happened all he had was a few screenshots of what he expected the final product to be like, and a very incomplete "engine". ***** ton of backlash, and then he supposedly moved on to C#. Google's cache of the download pages show no actual playable demo, so with no disrespect to anybody involved, don't blame me if I'm a little skeptical.
- Fortyseven, on 10/12/2007, -7/+17That's, like, the basic plot to 'Antitrust' isn't it? :)
- Matt2k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Here is some things I'd like explained.
From the thread
"Mar 22 2007, 03:36 PM
Yesterday, around 4:00pm, I received a phone call telling me that Richard (Dampe) has been in a fatal car accident."
Fair enough. Let's check Dampe's profile on the board.

Well that's certainly strange, isn't it!

That coupled with the lack of news story, or any reference to the death of a Richard Denton anywhere, and the suspicious immediate takedown of the site request by the family? Come on. - proghead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9They finished Mozart's Requiem did they not?
- supermajic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10*****
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9And awfully convenient..
- muffins, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9As said before, no disrespect intended by this post:
I am a little suspicious of these type of things. Ones first thoughts are never to post on forum after being informed of a death. While maybe some hardcore interneteers may. Anyways my skepticisms lie in a few things - 1. Maybe he didn't want to finish his project and he really did just use this as a cop out. 2. Accounts of the major owners of the site have been hacked (not likely, but still) 3. He just wanted some attention.
If any of the above are true I think it would be #1.
If I am wrong then my condolences to the family. RIP. - Matt2k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8> As for his OOT2D project even if his family wanted to they could not continue it or give it out, he kept it in an encrypted RAR archieves at all times he wasnt worknig on it, so not a chance...
Why would he do that? Is his mom going to pirate his ***** game? How would you know this?
I'm with the others and call suspicion on this. There's nothing in the news. A link to a report or it didn't happen. And preemtively, because I know some jackass is about to say it, remember *I'm* not the one who posted about his death on the internet and brought it into public discourse.
And my skepticism is double because that I was involved with a similar situation when I was that age. Some kids wanted to terminate their online service (A dialup BBS) , so rather than just shutting it down, they wrapped it all up into this overly elaborate and bizarre story that everyone saw through. - Tomgupper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I agree.
I'd want someone to finish off the work I started. It would be the ultimate tribute. - sh4rkb1t3, on 10/12/2007, -11/+19*****... I really wanted to play this one.
Somebody has to pick up the project where it left off, to finish what Richard started. - nonzzero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7How is it disrespecting Dampé to talk about a really popular project he spent the last few years of his life working on?
Everybody wants to make some sort of little mark on the world, and I think this was probably his. I hope people remember the things I do after I die. - MaJoRa, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11I knew him quite personally, his name is Richard Denton.
"Does anyone actually know this guys full name? Seems like we could clear this up easily if we just knew his name, not that hard too find out if a person is really dead."
Yes the guy is really dead.... i feel mostly sorry for his girlfriend and parents...
As for his OOT2D project even if his family wanted to they could not continue it or give it out, he kept it in an encrypted RAR archieves at all times he wasnt worknig on it, so not a chance... - Arcan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9And isn't it Death that's the problem here?
