Amazingly well done site. - inactive, on 02/25/2009, -1/+9Not surprised. a 50 dollar game lasts much longer than movies and has mammoth replay value. Add to that mods, DLCs etc and I'm game. On Steam you can get unbelievable discounts as well. During christmas I bought Portal and Bioshock for 5 bucks each, Team Fortress for 10 and GTA4 for 39.99

- GregLoire, on 01/30/2009, -0/+4I especially like the achievements.
- fsjenkins2000, on 01/30/2009, -0/+3No ***** we couldn't drive anywhere because gas was so expensive. We had to keep ourselves entertained somehow.
- strictnein, on 01/30/2009, -1/+3Not free.
- mirunit, on 01/30/2009, -0/+2Agreed, many good deals on steam. Although, do not buy Saints Row 2 for PC, it makes GTA4 look like the best release ever to hit PC.
Also, to the article. I am not sure I would call people who play free online games part of a financially viable 'gaming audience'. - strictnein, on 01/30/2009, -0/+2The casual gaming market makes tons of money off of gamers playing free games. It's plenty viable.
- jessnine, on 01/30/2009, -0/+2Oh, I'm aware.
- inactive, on 01/30/2009, -0/+2And apparently, every single people in that 27% are bickering about which is the best console.
- rushiku, on 01/31/2009, -0/+2"Premiere" would indicate "better than Kongregate", which it's not.
Newgrounds doesn't suck, but it's not a gaming site either. (it's a site with games, see the difference?) - rushiku, on 01/31/2009, -1/+3Oh my, did someone make it all the way to the second week of Economics 101 before dropping out?
- rushiku, on 02/01/2009, -0/+1Make sure your hair is good and pointy, extra credit, I heard.
;) - copypastry, on 01/30/2009, -0/+1you are now hearing the original coin sound from mario.
- Hraes, on 01/30/2009, -0/+1I knew the surge would work!
- leesw, on 01/31/2009, -0/+1Well, I happen to really enjoy http://www.mazegame.us. But that's probably not as complex as the games we're talking here.
- inactive, on 01/30/2009, -0/+1its a good way to save money....
- inactive, on 01/30/2009, -0/+1Most people under the age of 35, I would imagine, are online gaming in some form or another. Millions of people are playing on XBL, PSN, WoW, iPhone etc, etc as we speak. Even people do so unknowingly by playing those dumb games with friends on Facebook.
- rushiku, on 01/31/2009, -0/+1I'm sure it had nothing to do with greater availability, better quality and more 'seasoned' people on the 'net (Fewer noobs afraid to do anything other than forward spam).
How silly of me, it must be the economy.
I should have known this because I've personally spent more time 'mini-gaming' in the last 3 years than 'real' gaming, due to time constraints. (5 minute game? cool!, 50 hour game? When?) Of course, if I wasn't working...I'd have all the time I want for 'real' gaming, hmmm...wake me when 'real' games show an uptick, so I can be concerned about the economy too. - Ponged, on 01/30/2009, -0/+1I think the best thing about casual games is that most of them are free and they do not require a lot of commitment. With the economy sinking faster and faster people need a quick and easy way to escape, I like to think of these games as a smoke break for non-smokers!
- inactive, on 01/30/2009, -1/+2gaming audience? the amount of actual participants must have been even greater!
- omgwhataguy, on 01/30/2009, -0/+1Shiver me timbers that is a lot of money!
- ewang, on 01/30/2009, -0/+1Surprised not to see Newgrounds mentioned here - THE premier Flash portal:
http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/479926 - ev4n7, on 01/30/2009, -0/+1Rather than blaming a slumping economy. I'd say its the evolution of tower defence games from RTS games (Starcraft/Warcraft/Age of Empires) to flash.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tower_defense - nullcodes, on 01/30/2009, -0/+1Great, all the unemployed are playing free online games. That sort of productivity should really boost the economy.
- jebiya, on 01/30/2009, -0/+0its all about Bloons tower defense... supermonkey go!
- DrewPeacock, on 01/30/2009, -1/+1Huh... I would have thought that as employment goes down, so would the amount of time people spend playing online games.
- wowgamers, on 01/30/2009, -0/+0I spent more time reading the hilarious comments to the story than the lame story itself
- mirunit, on 01/30/2009, -1/+1"makes tons of money off of gamers playing free games"
Unless we are talking about ad revenue, I do not see the business model. Even then, the only way you are going to make 'tons of money' from free material is if you own a huge portion of the market - which in turn limits the people/companies who can do this. - icreonerp, on 02/21/2009, -0/+0Well it will certainly boost gaming industry
http://www.icreongamestudio.com - mulock, on 01/30/2009, -0/+0I'm still playing counter-strike 1.6.... =(
- inactive, on 01/31/2009, -2/+2no, grad school managerial economics. my exam is in two weeks.
- janthika29, on 07/16/2009, -0/+0It's really good and interesting.
- inactive, on 01/30/2009, -2/+1If Blizzard decreased their price per monthly for WoW, then their marginal revenue should increase due to increased quantity demanded. Demand could also shift to the right, therefore increasing the crossing of Marginal Revenue and Marginal Cost.
- diggduggDOOM, on 01/30/2009, -5/+0Engineer is credit to team.
