- baldr, on 10/12/2007, -4/+259OMG! Halo 3 is copying Duck Hunt!!!
- kp3469, on 10/12/2007, -6/+130damn them, now they're copying Earth and Physics! didn't God get a copyright?
- Brutis, on 10/12/2007, -5/+122Halflife 2 had birds that you could shoot out of the sky.........so did Resistance copy HL2?
- AhrenBa, on 10/12/2007, -13/+88Can someone please tell me why adding birds to a game makes the front page of Digg? Let alone a big announcement??
- tektalk, on 10/12/2007, -3/+51They're just ***** birds, there's nothing extra special about it.
- steven401, on 10/12/2007, -8/+48Nice use of the reply system.
- renegadeafk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+37Yes, they've finally added this, i refuse to play any game that has no birds.
- Shippwreck87, on 10/12/2007, -0/+36It would be revolutionary if they added a dog that laughed at you every time you missed a Covenant soldier
- Nethid, on 10/12/2007, -5/+40Halo 2 had bird things too. Go into the campaign mode and look around in the sky.
Anyway, doesn't Halo 3 sound pretty close to being done than they are trying to make it sound? I mean, they are finishing the ripples on the water, and the birds in the sky... early release? - chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -4/+35Can someone call me when something interesting happens? I know halo 3 will be great and all, but seriously, this isn't newsworthy at all.
- cam503, on 10/12/2007, -0/+23@ahrenba:
Birds or not, it's a pretty damn good article with some interesting stuff in it. Who cares if the submitter decided to focus on the birds alone (fetish?). Personally, I thought the distortion of light depending on what angle you look at mountains in the distance or the water was *****' brilliant, but it also would've been hard to convey in copy for a digg article. - woojoo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23Marines vs. Covenent vs. Sentinals vs. Flood... vs. Birds?
- autocrawler, on 10/12/2007, -8/+25Oh my god, Halo 3 has birds?! That's so totally amazingly important! Instant front page material!
- UPSLynx, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20Big deal. As Brutis mentioned, HL2 had detailed birds too. And they had AI even! Flocked together, and scattered when startled by your presence or loud noises.
- DaffyDuck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13It appears that the game uses the same physical principles that make the Earth's sky blue to create the color in the sky in the game. That is cool, if true.
- TheNik, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15I hope you can kill the birds. That was something I did to pass the time in Metal Gear Solid 2. :P
No matter what anyone says, Halo 3 looks like it's shaping up to be one hell of a game. - marmanukem, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14There were birds in Halo 2...
I remember killing them and they exploded in a shower of blood. - iricund, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14The original Unreal had bird type things you could shoot. As did Duck Hunt on the NES. Hardly revolutionary...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+16birds are important.
- antisthenex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9That really should've been the title of the article (The sky is generated by light passing through particles, just like real life). The fact that a game's physics is getting that succinct is incredible. It's quickly becoming a simulation of reality and not just a game. I find it hard to believe that any game console without a huge physics board can do that, and it sounds like Halo 3 will be the ultimate benchmark of the Xbox360, which it's awfully early in the console's life for that.
- Intangible360, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Although the headline would seem to indicate the most interesting thing about the update is the addition of birds it is actually a fairly interesting and informing update for non-bird reasons. This is also why I assume it made it to the front page.
- SimonDonkers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Why does it take so incredibly long until somebody actually reads the article and replies that it actually contains more then jokes regarding birds? Two paragraphs refer to birds, how you can shoot them down, walk up to there body and notice the highly detailed rendering of there body.
Why can't anyone before replying first read the article rather then make 100 jokes about birds?
It has a very interesting read about why mountains in a distance look blue. I dugg it, although I disliked the title. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Protip: Try reading the article.
- Vironex, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10I like your comment. You're neat. I like the sky.
- CanceledCzech, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I remember that the first Metroid Prime had birds that were flying around in the sky that you could shoot.
- DonKarnage25, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Dugg down for incorrect usage of newb. The person in question is clearly a noob.
- rAid135, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Hey, birds have feelings too
- Jozer99, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Let me know when nVidia releases their new chipset supporting a PBPU (Parallel Bird Processing Unit) to speed up game play after game developers start competing to see who can fit the most birds into their games (just like the current arms race to see who can create the most overdone HDR effects).
- SultanTravi, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Nah, the beta hasn't even happened yet.
BTW, you can shoot those birds with the beam rifle. They asplode.
/anxiously awaiting beta - Jeffler, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4BREAKING NEWS:
Master Chief is the Dog from Duck Hunt...hence the non-revealing of his face. - ydt89, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3*agrees* I shot the birds in halo 2 all the time...
- MWeather, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2An excellent article showing the importance of physics & AI to a game's atmosphere. Interaction with the environment is very important for immersion.
A scene can only feel so real with graphics alone.
That's why I bought a PS3. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I noticed this on that page:
"Weekly Water Update"
That's funny. - turbod33, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wow, I'm glad nobody read the article. The submitter's title was pretty lax, but they discussed a ton of stuff which made me very excited for the game... But no, everyone is like OMG BIRDS IVE SEEN BIRDS B4 IN GAME.
- kdog1983, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Out of all these bird jokes about three were fun, the rest were gay. The weekly updates that Frank throws out are just cool tidbits of info for us die
hard halo fans. Apparently there are enough people digging this story to the front page, people who complying this is not news should read the story.
The point I saw in this story, is that there will be air battles real time in the background of the game, and the fact that you could shoot one of these "ships" down. To me that is sweet, video games need more interaction in there environment, hopefully halo 3 will improve upon that. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+9I am sorry, was there a copyright law on the use of birds in video games that I missed?
- aMammoth, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7This is lame for a story, but halo 3 will be awesome nonetheless.
- SSCrow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Thats pretty sweet that they are adding that light scattering effect.
- cam503, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"... and with that article, the previously undiscovered bird-hating community contained within digg was unveiled."
- rowlodge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i always thought it was weird why there where no beavers on "beaver creek" myself, i'll be targeting those birds for shooting practice for sure.
- strictnein, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Birds? Now they are copying little things from Resistance?"
Unreal had birds that you could shoot out of the sky. And other local fauna that was "alive". - mast3rshake77, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ah yeah... smokin the bird flu
- kippjon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3don't forget the birds in Turok 2, on the n64.
- SSCrow, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Bungie is all about the subtle details to bring the environments to life.
Birds are important.
But the Light Scattering is more important in that article. - LordDshyzL, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2you can do this in halo 2 as well
- Zaetha, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1kadsbaker, and do you know the term "usually"?
"Usually" is not "always", it's not a law in manufacturing, they "tend to" do it.
It may tip you the "but not in this case" in my original comment.
And I am giving 2 examples of why it's close to gold: the manufacturing one and the beta. - Zaetha, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well, they are already making the Master Chief helmet for the Legendary Edition.
http://www.bungie.net/News/content.aspx?type=topnews&link=ALegendintheMaking
Usually, when you are creating the package of a product, the product is finished and ready to manufacture, but not in this case. I think they are in late development now, polishing and modifying things. The Beta is made to change the game based on reception and squash bugs. - VaporBro, on 10/26/2007, -0/+1The coders are different from the artists. Just as the composer is different from the janitor. There are people in charge of making the packaging; no doubt. I bet their job is to get the packaging done sooner than the game can be released so they can release early box art images for us to drool over. I'm sure the box art itself will be revised all way up until the last week of release.
Can't judge when a game is complete by just one stage of production. - ritz4real, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1i believe bungie has alot of time on their hands
- mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Same here marmanukem, Halo 2 had killable birds in the sky. They explode into a blood mist when you shoot them.. didn't halo 1 have it as well?
