- tofaroni, on 10/12/2007, -5/+33Ingenious. Cruel, but ingenious.
- seph429, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21how do you "transfer over" weapons in a game where 90% of the stuff you have is soulbound anyway
- daRoach, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20Virtual Identity Theft
- EmileVictor, on 10/12/2007, -5/+18From my logs I see 43% of users have Firefox. Especially those who are coming from WoW fan sites. Hardly the 6% you're mentioning.
- jellyroll713, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14The drive-by download version spreads via vulnerabilities in IE. How surprising.
- birdwatcher3000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Selling Epic Identity Card of Mythos for 2.00$
- pairanoyd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Simple solution to end all the hacking and ID theft.
Chop off BOTH hands on first offense. Death penalty on second offense. No repeat offenders. - serra, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Once again, I thought of condoms when I saw the headline. It's been one of those weeks!
- bola, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Just use a bit of common sense and you'll all be safe.
Did I mention, a friend of mine just emailed me a fab new screensaver called fab-new-screensaver.WoW-password.ripper.scr.exe
I will give it a whirl and report back ... - Drood, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8All I can say is if anyone hijacks my account, good luck making any money off my level 12 hunter. HAHA!
I fail to see how people can sell the Soulbound stuff. The gold, yes, but the equipment? Everything cool binds the instant you pick it up. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Brilliant? What happens when this starts happening to you and your bank account?
- Drood, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Nah. Death sentence on first offence. Saves money by not having a second trial.
- IAmAI, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8People can protect themselves from most frauds and scams with a bit of vigilance and common sense.
- sp0rk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Exactly what I was wondering. I guess they just grab the cash and maybe disenchant all the gear.
- chutz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6"Not when its a keylogger spread by an IE exploit. You've no idea what your talking about. Hand in your geek card and move to the back of the line."
Simple way to protect yourself: don't use IE. - hello2usir, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Attackers have been using viruses/malware/social engineering to gain account credentials for anything you can think of since the dawn of the internet.
Nearly all popular MMOGs have been and continue to fall victim to these criminals.
This case is nothing original or creative. - deesine, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5You do yourself a favor and quit your subscription?
- Namco, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5And I thought the ransom virus was bad.
- pt4117, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@EmileVictor
How can you give a specific %, and then say especially from a type of site? I don't think percentages really work that way.
And your sampling of one (or maybe a handful of sites) is hardly indicative of the entire internet. - donte, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You can still sell soulbound stuff to random merchant. You won't get as much as in an auction house, but if you're hijacking tons of accounts, those little bits add up quick.
- iindigo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"You mean nothing to worry about other than the fact that your client is inferior to the PC one?
(Seriously, folk running Boot Camp on the new Intel Mac's have found the PC client runs better.)"
I honestly don't care if I miss a few FPS if it means not having to deal with crap like mentioned in this story and not having to bother with antivirus/anti-spyware software. - mc1123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Nice 1984 reference.
- whoutz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Seven years ago, I read this and then threw away my TV and video games away: "But it was all right, everything was all right, the struggle was finished. He had won the victory over himself. He loved Big Brother."
- flameboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3This cant be all that profitable. Blizzard GMs have procedures to recognize an account theft and return restore the account fully.
All it would take is that person to submit a ticket the next day on a different account, or to call in. Blizzard can see the account activity, especially IP address changes and obscene disenchants.
There are many people who have already gotten hacked and stripped who have had their account fully restored. The hackers IP can also be linked to other accounts and his main account can be banned.
So, it might work a little, but its nothing Blizzard can take care of. Especially if this is all one guy, he will be shut down in no time. - pahonix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Ahh, memories of MapHack come flooding back.
- ratzfatz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Did I miss the boat or is that information lacking the details about how to recognize this Trojan? Are there any hints or links to the common anti-virus pages? I think this article could have been made better. No digg from me.
- Fratm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's a key logger, not a packet sniffer. Encrypting passwords to send over the wire, will not protect what comes off the keyboard.. The logger pulls the key strokes out of the keyboard buffer.
-Fratm - thatsiebguy, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7Those crafty bastards! Oh wait, I already canceled my WoW subscription.. :P
- posure, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1All I have to say is "Good"...I have two friends who basically quit school just to play world of warcraft 24/7 for fun and do nothing else.
- Dakk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Any character can be trained to "Disenchant" "soulbound" items into things that are a LOT more valuable on the in game auction house.
- etx313, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They can vendor all your gear and send the money to their charater hah. It would be funny as hell to log in and my poor Tauren is naked and poor, talk about rock bottom.
- TwoSlick, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I've been using WoW on my mac for over a year, and have NEVER had any of those problems you've described. I've also never found a mod that I couldn't use, and I've used a ton of those. All mods work on either platform, unless there's some secret stash of obscure PC mods out there.
- SpeckledJim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Particularly since the .exe installers are a likely source of these trojans. Every mod I've installed has come from a zip file.
- swaxhog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1A co-worker almost got ownd big time. He download a "free 60 day WoW game card generator". When he ran it, it of course didn't give him any code but it did insert a fairly nasty trojan. Luckily, he was using a PC firewall (ZoneAlarm in this case) which caught the process trying to get out to the Internet and he was smart enough to not automatically click 'allow'.
He tried getting rid of it and couldn't and ended up calling me. It took about an hour and I was almost ready to re-install his OS but I finally wiped it.
It really made me wonder just how many people get trapped by similar things. This trojan set up ull remote access ability and keyboard logging. It also hide itself very well and if it wasn't for ZoneAlarm he would of never known. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1A lot of the gamers I know would rather try and stick a key logger on a computer and steal someones password than just play the game. It's a shame.
Also, why isn't Warcraft encrypting the passwords? Or do they already and does this Trojan brute force them? - DiscoLoke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Don't use IE? Yea, that's a good idea, get 90% of the internet population to switch over... good luck, while you are at it why don't you solve world hunger and bring peace, that's simple too.. I hate IE, but most people use IE.
- Ghanda, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i like the chopping of the hands first that way they can suffer for a while before they die which is best for all
- blistered, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They wouldn't bother if there wasn't money in it.
- Dakk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Mods should be written in lua making them platform independant. If you've got a mod the requires an exe... think of changing mods!
- Ghanda, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i dont think its all children i mean really what children have the knoledge of scripdt and coding for no reason come on im 17 and i still dont know much about it... most who do the virus thing just download from somewhere then use them
- MiniBear, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I agree with posure
its not right to steal from people, but WoW seems to be even more addictive than Diablo II
perhaps this will break some addicts of their habit - chris86wm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Lmao, this rules.
