- aprocter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5did anyone else laugh at 'baseline humans'?
- DewayneSmith, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I can play Quake 4, watch a movie, manage my web servers and read multiple websites at the same time.
- listentothis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2lol "baseline humans"
- swifty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I believe this current generation of young adults is better at multitasking in general. For example, how many of you guys do homework while listening to music or watching television? I know I always have my iTunes open when either doing work for school or simply searching the net.
Young adults are constantly multitasking where as individuals in their 50's or older are not. It may be because they grew up without the technology of today so they do not currently own devices such as a computer, mp3 player, cell phone, etc., or if they do own one of the previously mentioned devices they may not know how to use them.
Summing everything up, I don't think it is just "gamers" that are better at multitasking but the current generation of young adults in general. - TrippleZero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Not totally sure that the title of the Digg article had a whole lot to do with the article it referred to, but for one line, but I digg it. I read an article a while back that said that the average to heavy gamer has a reaction time almost on par with that of a professional athlete. (By the way; it's interesting that the word Digg shows up as incorrectly spelled with the checker. I'm sure I'm not the 1st or even 100th to nice this... but it's odd.)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm surfing the web, eating, watching a movie, and programming all at once,
Using 3 monitors and 2 computers.
Oh, and I'm probably going to turn on my DS soon. - Perfection, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I really don't know what this article is talking about. I was a subject that participated in this experiment (I'm a student at OSU that wanted extra-credit in my PSY class so I volunteered).
Not only was the survey fairly anonymous (in that I didn't give any information about if I'm a "gamer"), but it is more about being able to focus on and concentrate than truely multi-task. I've taken several variations of this experiment, and I don't agree with the conclusions.
That being said, I apparently did pretty darn good, though I'm really not much of a gamer.
-- no digg. - tsupersonic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's kind of obvious...
- nate007, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i can play CS, drink, eat, talk on the phone, take a shower, use the toilet, and read a book at the same time!
- teh_toaster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1all i can say is 'duh'.
- LeFrenzy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1amateurs.
I've played NFS: Most Wanted, while producing music, surf web, talk on Skype, and have sex with Mariah, all at the same time. ;D - hogrod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1blah blah blah..... every decade they come up with how the young are so much better at multitasking and try to find something to explain it.... maybe it is just that they are young?
I can see playing this generations game systems would make you better at multitasking, just think about it the controllers today have at least 8 buttons to use compare that to the Atari 20 years ago with it's one button. - CheapDigWannbe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well sure...
My problem is I've become so used to multitasking that I can't do one thing at a time when I need to. - carnage, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12 computers, 3 montitors, and tv, all doing differenty things (each computer doing about 2 things) and the phone. Less WoW is involved, then i can only do 2 things, music and WoW. so ya, im a multitasking wow nerd...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2i can ***** 2 people at the same time...
thats multitasking for you...lol - MSDommell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0im watching family guy, surfing digg, playing GR2 on XBL and eating at the same time
- mshiltonj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The Myth of Multitasking
- ToeCheese, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Unless you are downloading demos from XBox Live! LOL
- louiekit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Gamers? I RTFA.
- raven4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0well im on 1 monitor with 1 keyboard, NO music....just typing
- antispammer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1oh wait nevermind, it briefly mentions it once
- xofc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'll back that up. I got better grades in my flights after I started playing Halo 2 on a daily basis with my roommate. Especially after we started quizzing each other on emergency procedures while to dodge rockets. It's pretty hard, but if you can do it then, you can do it in the aircraft. dugg.
- EarthBoundX5, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0indeed
- Wamzlee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I can only do one thing at once.
- crazyfan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It matters who you talk too. And most can do multitasking its just a matter how successful during multitasking or concentrating on one thing.
- mshiltonj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://www.flickr.com/photos/timothymorgan/62139938/ -- The Myth of Multitasking
- Haplo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Question is: is multitasking in humans really that good, or does it just mean having a short attention span and hence concentration problems?
- crapiolio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0We can drink too.
- green1152, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I believe this statement is true.
- springbok, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"did anyone else laugh at 'baseline humans'?"
Yeah, and then I had to explain myself to my boss. He'd just walked in when I cracked up. - atbnet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I can text message or talk on my cell phone while driving. You only need one hand to steer. It's not that hard but I do play video games frequently.
- stedios, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0lol
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Puny down-level, I mean "base-line" humans! All your base belong to me!
- skwhirl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0damn "Baseline" humans? Your summary really kicks non-gamers in the balls ;)
- andreo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dugg just for the "baseline humans" line!
- LouisC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Man, I dugg this the second I read "baseline humans"
- dvspns, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0omfg i read all that ***** to have like one line say gamers are better at multi tasking dam i hate that
-dugg it- - Rand1956, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"Baseline humans" is a clever phrase ... as Cory Doctorow must've thought when he wrote it at boingboing Sunday morning.
- jackal230, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm not dumb enough to overlook sarcasm, yet there were more than one person who commented about what i posted. maybe u should read more before u post
- slurpee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I can read a book, eat food, and talk in cellphone, while driving. Look mom no hand for my wheel :p
I learn a trick from friend, during my school years. Hold the driving wheel using left leg, turn only 45 degree each direction. - nymphetamine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0its good to be a gamer:)
- awfulshot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0lol @ ToeCheese
- TrippleZero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0We're idiots? *would insert witty comment to point out the ironic stupidity of the person he is replying to but realizes he dosen't even need to*
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I know who to hack know you guys are idots!
- dravidian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"baseline humans"
Lolers!
Though when I play a game I get totally engrossed in it to the point that I tune out other stuff (like the GF, sometimes food, sleep, bills and work). Hmm I guess its only me that does that ;) - codemac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Remember, it's all about rapid refocusing, not multitasking.
- essrog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The actual emphasis of the article is different than what's presented here, but like so many others here, I applaud the use of the term "baseline humans" + digg
- nouhad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This statement is very true actually. Multitasking FTW
- antispammer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Wow did anyone RTFA? It does not mention gamers at all
- jackal230, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Lot of dumbasses here confusing multitasking with switching tasks really fast... You can do other things in the downtime of another, like playing a game and eating, but most people cant play and eat at the same time. I would like to see a person in the middle of a FPS match trying to aim/move/shoot/eat at the same time. There are exceptions though...like playing/eating with other body parts than hands. Also, watching a movie/whatever while doing something else is plain retarded unless you have already seen it because you are bound to miss something which takes away from the enjoyment.
