- ubbyba, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3about the DVDs. In Florida that is illegal. If they advertise the item at a price they have to sell it at that price. Other wise it is deception and it is a 15,000 dollar fine per item per customer that reports it to the state attorney general. I don't know abut other states though. sorry to get off topic.
- mogdor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2When I was in Best Buy last week a salesperson asked what I was looking for and I told him a wireless adapter for my Tivo. He then proceeded to tell me it would cost over $100 to hook up my Tivo to my wireless network and suggested I have someone from GeekSquad come out and do it for me. This guy was a total moron for 2 reasons, first, for making up that BS, and second, for shooting his mouth off before realizing that I already knew what I was doing. To make a long story short, I told him exactly what he could do with his $100 and his GeekSquad, reported him to management (though I doubt they did anything about it), and bought an adapter for $45. Retards.
- tito13kfm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Ok, putting my flame retardent suit on.
I work at Best Buy. During our last store meeting we were warned of this misinformation put out by corporate. No, the XBox 360 does not burn cd's or DVD's. Unfortunately it had already went to print before they caught the error. It seems that all the knowledgable people were working on black friday ads and this one slipped through the cracks.
I will also agree that alot of Best Buy employee's talk out of their ass, but it is not a company wide policy to lie to customers. We are non-commision and it does us no good to misinform the public about our products.
Also, I know it's going to come up. The product replacement plan. The employees don't make a dime off of selling them. They are actually worth it if you have children or really bad luck. Can anybody remember the DDE fiasco of the PS2 or the slim ps2's overheating? Yep, you could have gotten a free one if your's was affected and you had the plan.
Also to show that we are dedicated to the customers, no employee of the Best Buy I work at is allowed to buy a 360 on launch day. We have to go buy them from a competetor so they run out faster. That isn't company wide, but it does show that some of us do care about the nerds of the world. - elpayo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Looks like they got the 360 Media Center Extender info crossed with the Media Center PC talking points.
- EdLesMann, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Although really frigging funny and I really enjoy watching Best Buy suffer after the crap they have pulled (6 months of pain because of their ignorance followed by a lawsuit; I ended up getting my way..still hate em).
However, I am beginning to wonder about the validity of this post as I am unable to find any other good references on the web (granted I haven't done extensive searching). Anyone else have another website with more info?
Also, remember this? http://digg.com/links/Best_Buy_shopper_buys_$1300_PC,_but_finds_only_wooden_blocks_inside Anyone got any good updates on this case? I really believe that Best Buy would pull this stunt, but again there are like 3 websites with the same story and I wonder if this really happened... - rileyjt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1photoshop anyone?
- Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1it's only a misprint. funny, but a misprint. if the 360 had capabilities like this, MS would have been promoting it for months
- mogdor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Best Buy also put up that ad a few weeks ago with the list of tv DVD box sets for $15.99 that was supposedly good through november 19, then refused to sell them at that price, claiming it was a "pricing error". Anybody here look into that? I wonder if it counts as false advertising.
- nesstheking1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1anyone have proof?
- Wogna, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I bet that's fake
- hankbeasley, on 04/22/2009, -0/+1Best Buy Sucks with their warranty talk and pea brained sales associates that can only help you if you are in the department that they happen to have the sales pitch memorized, bitches.
- JzLosman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Like the many posts said on the website, they probably mean it can rip your CDs and DVDs to the HDD.
But instead lets get together and bash Best Buy. woooo Mob mentality. cough:: sarcasm :: cough. - mogdor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I just think they should sell things at the price they advertise, like those $15.99 box sets. Boo Best Buy!!
- swoosh_bnd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Last week they said that it came with the universal media remote.
- GT_Onizuka, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well, I used to work at Best Buy (it was fun for awhile, but I liked helping people, not heckling them) and going along what people said about pricing errors.
If someone came up with a game, and it had a sale sticker on it (from awhile ago, and the price had gone up) we were _required_ to sell it to them _at that price_ and deal with the losses. Now, it was a pretty suburban neighborhood, so I doubt all of them are like this, but I always thought it was kindof nice that we did that.
Another thing, for the upcoming Holiday season, my supervisor told me that if someone tells me another store has the same item for cheaper (but it's not obvious a lie) we are supposed to allow the sale to go through without needing proof (normally we have to call the store and check, or look through their ads, assuming the customer brought them), so try and screw em over gang :D - aa3000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Not responsible for typographical errors"
- Otto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I used to work for Best Buy. I no longer do.
The floor people don't make commissions, nor do they make a dime from the service plans. However, frequently the store will give gift certificates to those people selling the most service plans each week/month/otherTimeUnit. They have incentive, it's just not much of one.
The service/replacement plan is probably worth it on new gear like the 360, certainly. If the first units have issues, you can get them traded in for later models down the line.
For most everything else, the plans are rip-offs.
And yes, Best Buy is more expensive than most other places. You knew that when you walked in. Complaining about it is silly. Just go elsewhere if you like. - drn666, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"about the DVDs. In Florida that is illegal. If they advertise the item at a price they have to sell it at that price. " You can't expect everyone in the world to have as much tech savvy as you, i mean if they do why the hell would they be working at best buy in the first place..."
...thus proving that DIGG is not only a techie site. Also, there are sympathizers with Retailers here. I reserve the right to make fun of anybody who doesn't know that a $400 game console has no capability to burn DVDs. Furthermore, it isn't "minimum wage" workers who wrote this, it was a marketing person; it also passed through several desktop publishing and/or design professionals before making it to the newspaper or flyer company who printed it.
So it's misinformation, but it is just as likely to have been planted and distributed on purpose. In that case, it's terribly funny, because it means that not only are minimum-wage workers peddling it on these grounds (dvd burning), but people choosing this over, say, a cheap PC are also being fooled -- thus further asserting the illegitimacy of the entire electronics industry.
Sure, I love my gadgets (bluetooth, ipod etc) but I have also some insight to the process of making profit come out of putting together complicated elements: they are hard to design, build, and test to a working state; when all that work is done, the difficulty of selling the product is but a slap in the face to an entrepreneur - even if his name is Gates (roughly equivalent to Midas).
The more people are fooled, the more we've progressed to the point where everyone, no matter what their salary or electronic credentials, understands that companies are doing whatever they can to survive, including reducing their natural internal regard for the welfare of others. How else could people become so enthusiastic and ebullient about someone else's products? It blurs the mind's eye. These people aren't stupid, long and professional as the assembly line for that misprint may be. They're simply over-drawn, tired, inexpert, and pumped full of Best Buy sales energy. Anyone in sales, anywhere, can attest to this possibility. - EdLesMann, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Its Best Buy.....
Of course they are making crap up...
They do it all the time...
So frigging annoying...

Put down the Dual Shock and invest in Mavis Beacon Typing Tutor and a copy of Strunck & White. Arguments are far more effective when they are clearly laid out.
Nothing defuses the credibility of an advocate quite like poor spelling and poor grammar. Alex and Kevin have been good enough to put a "Check Spelling" button on the page. Please use it.
As to your "argument", generally speaking, the game quality lay with the developer, not the distributor. Both consoles offer stellar titles. I seem to recall a little-known game only on XBox called "Halo." Then there was another one called "Knights of the Old Republic." Maybe you've heard of them.
It will be interesting to see what titles come out. Admittedly, I've seen little press on the comparative ease of programming for 360 vs. PS2 (or PS3). That, I believe, is the crucial factor. - your_mom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0if this was true itd be piracy at a whole new level
- zdiggler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Frind of mine bought a Geforce6800 from Frys that came in one of those boxes that dont display the card and what he found was old ass TNT2 card in there! Well it was hard because it was Expensive and people been known to repackage with that kind of carp and retrun for full refund. If the package is unopen or seem unopen, it will be be put back on the shelf.
But Frys was good enough to give him the card after he called the police and they found that he spend over $12,000 in last 3 years in the store. - shoop008, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You don't have to sell something at the advertised price if it is an accident, even in Florida. You can get in trouble if you intentionally advertise a price you aren't willing to sell at. In Florida for the special on black friday you must list the amount of product you have available to sell. The ad will say something like minimun 20 available.
- bogll, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Also, I know it's going to come up. The product replacement plan. The employees don't make a dime off of selling them. tito13kfm you are using the famous Best Buy replacement plan LIE, if you have children that mess up the thing, or just bad luck the replacement plan DOES NOT COVER IT, ONLY MANUFACTURER DEFECTS APPLY NOT ACCIDENTS OR BAD LUCK. YOU WILL DO WELL AT BEST BUY......geeze - tito13kfm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"tito13kfm you are using the famous Best Buy replacement plan LIE, if you have children that mess up the thing, or just bad luck the replacement plan DOES NOT COVER IT, ONLY MANUFACTURER DEFECTS APPLY NOT ACCIDENTS OR BAD LUCK. YOU WILL DO WELL AT BEST BUY......geeze"
FALSE!!
Read the damn thing before you yell at me.
It does cover things that are not just manufacturers defects. It does not cover accidents. It covers normal wear and tear. If you buy a PRP on a new cd, you use it normally and it gets scratched up you will get a new one. I don't care if you don't believe me. I've done it before.
If you purchase the PRP or PSP without reading it, you are a moron. If you understand what it does cover, and decide you want one, then you will be covered against anything explicitly stated in the plan. Which includes, dust, heat, normal wear and tear, power surges. It doesn't cover physical abuse, dropping it etc. No ***** it doesn't, if I was a company offering warranties like that I would be out of business within a week.
And to those of you saying it's bad business to not let employees purchase them, you are correct, and today when I went in to work our manager had changed in mind. We can now purchase a 360, but we still have to wait in line with all the other morons who want one when the store opens.
Also, I would love to get a gift certificate for selling the most PSP's. I work in Digital Imaging and sold 5 4-year PSP's and 3 2-year PSP's today. What did I get out of this? Nothing. Did the customer's want the plan, yes. I only ever ask once. And I never push. Maybe I am different, but I like to explain the benefits of something and let the customer decide if they need it.
And just so I don't sound like a complete moron, would I buy a PRP on an XBox 360, hell friggin no. I'm not gonna sink $60 extra into a game system that I will probably abuse and get denied a replacement on. But I did buy a service plan on dishwasher and after being in for service 3 times within 3 years they gave me a brand new one. - tito13kfm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oh yeah, and one more thing. The guys in the geeksquad are friggin retarded, and anybody who pays $200 to have a wireless network installed is equally retarded.
- tito13kfm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Where's the edit button on this site?
I encourage anybody who actually believes that the PRP's and PSP's only cover manufacturer defects to go pickup one of the contracts from their local best buy and read it over. You may be surprised at what it does actually cover.
Another thing, if you ever get handed off to another employee to be pitched the service plan again, or if they offer to discount the price of the product to get you to buy the service plan. Ask to speak to the general manager of the store. The first is against company policy the second is down right illegal (inboarding). You can get that little snot nosed 16 yr old making minimum wage fired and feel good about yourself for being an ass. - Jaymoon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That font is obviously off of a HP product... Same color too.... =P
*fake* - jak119, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Bestbuy is in trouble for this one. Oh well stick it to them!
- jasqwerty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0LOL, people are so dumb, on both ends.
Real life happens, not everything is a photoshop. All the ad proves is that you need to know NOTHING about a product to market it.
Do your little UV trace on the ENTIRE TOP AND BOTTOM and you get the gawky blue crap, it's just the guys crappy scanner and a poor jpeg compression. - TimmyK., on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Also to show that we are dedicated to the customers, no employee of the Best Buy I work at is allowed to buy a 360 on launch day. All this means is that there won't be a-holes getting 360's for all their friends and screwing over the customers. When PS2 came out I waited in line, and this one jerk who worked at the Best Buy had all his friends at the front of the line, and more people kept coming and skipping in with him over the night. Unfortunately for him everyone in line complained to the managers in the morning when they were handing out tickets, and he wound up getting fired. It was pretty funny watching the look on his face when he was leaving. He tried to play it off like he didn't care but he looked like he might break into tears at any moment, and we were all laughing at him. - TubaFrog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0When "marginally better graphics than the previous model!" isn't enough to lure people to buy a console, the evildoers have already won.
- mcbesq, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The problem with this modern digital age is that there is no way to verify if the purported ad is real or doctored.
It would have been better if it was linked to Best Buy's site (though they might have noticed a digg effect).
For all anyone knows, it may have been doctored. I don't know. Best Buy is good enough not to send me junk mail.
(BTW - though my first shipment PS2 did have a bug, the replacement Sony sent me - within 2 weeks - is still working fine after 4 years. No DVD or gameplay problems. My Gamecube won't work, but I think that's because it's unplugged - because it SUCKS) - cvrefugee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That isn't a Photochop...I remember seeing the original ad mailed to me about a month ago. I didn't think about it really...I never read much about the 360 so I assumed it was true.
Oh, and I threw the ad in the trash...so I can't prove it to you. - 703_KN33, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Also to show that we are dedicated to the customers, no employee of the Best Buy I work at is allowed to buy a 360 on launch day. We have to go buy them from a competitor so they run out faster"
sorry man, but i work at a BBY myself, and im getting a 360 with no problem, PLUS i work that morning too. - penguindude15, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Still not going to buy one though.
Very cool though.
I wonder how Sony and Nintendo will react to this....
Could be good - mogdor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"You've got to be kidding me. Whatever happened to "mistake made, sorry for the confusion"."
It wasn't just a simple mistake where somebody made a typo, that I'd understand. The ad was clearly intentional. They created images with the special price ($15.99), set aside a special list of dvds with that price, and stated the ad was good till november 19. I tried to buy one of those box sets in october and it switched back to regular price. The ad stayed up for another couple weeks then they took it down. It's obvious somebody just changed their mind and decided not to sell the dvds for what was originally advertised. Boo Best Buy - mcbesq, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Take it from a lawyer:
In civil cases, the burden of proof is on the plaintiff. No paper ad (from the newspaper/circular) = no proof = no case = no money = no digg.
Your friendly neighborhood ambulance-chaser
And if any of you want to get into a big long discussion on this subject, I have one word for you:

Does that apply to everything? For example, if there was an ad on say something that's worth 99c, but instead, written out to be .99c, would you only have to pay a cent? - mcbesq, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Tuba: Have you played any of the PS3 games such as the next Metal Gear?
I'm guessing not. Until there is something playable, 360 is top of the line. Sorry, but AT THIS MOMENT all the PS3 hype is just that - HYPE. It has not been confirmed other than the specs. Polygon counts and teraflops are all well and good. Show me a playable demo, then we'll talk.
Sorry, tuba, but it's not 360 vs. PS3. It's 360 vs. PS2. 360 wins. - B111, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@Mogdor and all the BB morons:
We know BB employees don't work on comission, but all you BB employees know damn well and good that if you don't push enough PSPs (their ***** extended warranty, not the game device) and useless Monster cable (like BB sells any electronic device that would benefit from high quality cable) that you are fired. So while you're pay is hourly, your performance (and value as a BB employee) is based on upselling crap. Its like being on commission without the commission.
NO, i don't want a "free" magazine sub, or a warranty, or useless cable, please stop asking over and over. Don't bring a "wingman" to help after I said no.
(I used to work for a company that did in--store marketing in BBs, I got to see it all, even the Sunday morning indoctrination meetings). - gODfall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0CD/DVD burner? even if it came with it, it still don't make this crappy product from micro$oft a next gen console...
