- tastypastry, on 03/06/2008, -3/+128Did Jim Louderback and Patrick Norton foresee this? Also, does this mean Rev3 will pick up Robert Heron? Please pick up DL.TV, oh and Cranky Geeks too. Two good shows to add to your line up even if you do have to rename them.
- dmkemick, on 03/06/2008, -4/+124Hope this doesn't effect their gaming sites or podcasts, I listen to them as often as possible.
- allarise, on 03/06/2008, -3/+831up has, in the past few years, developed first rate modern gaming journalism via their podcasts and the 1up Show. I hope the game group stays exactly as it is.
- Dumbledorito, on 03/06/2008, -2/+76Which is odd, given that the magazine is at least 50% advertising.
- Hercules, on 03/06/2008, -3/+60I love how easy it is for corporations to file bankruptcy, causing billions in burden on taxpayers.... yet the average Joe, down on his luck, out of a job, and knee high in medical bills he can't pay isn't allowed to declare bankruptcy because the credit card companies worked it out with Congress that he has to pay.
Gotta love how that all works out.
Sorry for the political slant in here, but the word "bankruptcy" was of course in the description... - jaychuck, on 03/06/2008, -6/+59As a long-time poster on the 1UP Message Boards and a long-time subscriber to EGM, I really hope for the best for them. I couldn't imagine life without both of those gone. I really hope they all pull through this.
- daRoach, on 03/06/2008, -2/+53Hope this doesn't affect ZDTV.
- WNW3, on 03/06/2008, -2/+42I hold two issues of EGM here;
December 1994, issue #64, 400 pages. December 2007, issue #222, 139 pages - coppyrightmind, on 03/06/2008, -2/+38With the advent of gaming websites which feature video reviews and in game clips, I don't even bother reading magazines anymore.
- waza8501, on 03/06/2008, -1/+34official press release http://www.ziffdavis.com/press/releases/080305.0.h ...
- z3021017, on 03/06/2008, -3/+35I am anxious to hear what the 1UP Yours podcast crew have to say about this on Friday.
- theexitwound, on 03/06/2008, -0/+24I never miss a show of either DLTV or Cranky Geeks. I don't like the new DLTV format, but I still watch. It would be a real shame if they cut the budget.
- branjb, on 03/06/2008, -2/+26I wonder if this explains their amazingly small March issue of EGM. The thing didn't even top 100 pages.
- samdu, on 03/06/2008, -0/+22Their forums have gone to complete *****, but 1Up Yours is still the best gaming podcast by far. I hope the crew can weather this storm.
- HesNikke, on 03/06/2008, -1/+21how do you have an odd number of pages in a magazine?
- seanthebond, on 03/06/2008, -0/+18Hackers.
- jakeh111, on 03/06/2008, -1/+18They best keep my GFW podcast!
- inactive, on 03/06/2008, -5/+21At least we can depend on GameSpot/Ca$hWhore.
/sarcasm - samdu, on 03/06/2008, -0/+16A few of the 1Up crew have moved on. But overall, most of the defections seem to have much more to do with the opportunities presented than with anything at Ziff. Patrick and Roger both went to Revision3, where former colleagues already resided (Kevin) and probably pretty substantial raises were offered. Luke went to Microsoft via Bungie and, after Bungie left MS, simply Bungie. Also probably a hefty increase in salary involved, plus, Luke (and despite not liking MS all that much, I really dig Luke) found himself in a position to be a part of his favorite gaming franchise. And finally John, who left Ziff/1Up to start his own company. None of that really would be any different were Z-D any more healthy as a company than they are now.
God I follow this stuff too closely. :( - l0k0, on 03/06/2008, -3/+18Filefront is part of the 1Up Network. I'd hate to see that site go. However, they are filing this during their reconstruction plans so all hope is not lost. Hopefully they can pull out of the red so PC Mag, Games for Windows Magazine, Extreme Tech, etc. can stay around and remain profitable.
- fuzzmeister, on 03/06/2008, -2/+16Gotta hope this doesn't mean PC Magazine is going down the tubes...
- rzxc, on 03/06/2008, -1/+15I don't know all the details, but it seems to me that those idiots should have done this a long time ago. There's no way in hell they could ever pay of the hundreds of millions of dollars they owed. I heard they were looking for a buyer for various parts of the company. Obviously, that didn't pan out. In the meantime, most of the staff (at least most of the ones worth keeping) bailed on the company (Patrick Norton, Roger Chang, and what seems like the majority of the 1up crew). Again, I don't know the details, but after the huge loss in talent they suffered, this seems like a case study in how not to handle a bankruptcy situation.
- adamchristopher, on 03/06/2008, -5/+19Sony fanboy, confirmed.
- tendonut, on 03/06/2008, -1/+14Yet GamePro gets to live to see another day? Life isn't fair. Hopefully, someone will continue to publish EGM and keep up the goodness going
- WoollyMittens, on 03/06/2008, -0/+12No... the internet only introduced a new and possibly superior medium. That large corporations wouldn't adapt is the real problem. More roaring from the tar-pits.
- WNW3, on 03/06/2008, -0/+12Remember envelope art?
- schizogony, on 03/06/2008, -1/+121up Yours + GFW Radio + Retronauts + EGM Live* = the greatest video game podcasts ever made.
- TheSmokingManX, on 03/06/2008, -3/+14Did you see how a recent issue (March, I think it was?) featured the PS3 on the cover and why it was going to kick ass in 2008?
I guess not. - carpeclunes, on 03/06/2008, -2/+13Nothing can make me take an accounting class.
- gthyb, on 03/06/2008, -1/+10I think that's part of the problem. I don't see how those can help their bottom line. It sucks...years ago I subscribed to EGM. The internet destroyed gaming journalism, even though they are the best writers in the industry.
- virtualball, on 03/06/2008, -2/+11I used to order their magazines when I played video games, but now I'm too busy. For old time's sake, I just ordered a year subscription. I figure, I could always give them away or look at them a little. It's a small fee to help out a company that made my middle school years fun :)
- MutatedNantuko, on 03/06/2008, -0/+9Well damn, they own Extreme Tech.com, and that's a pretty rad website for PC part reviews.
- maiku00, on 03/06/2008, -3/+121up and their podcasts are all EXCELLENT. They should really just scrap GFW and EGM in print and roll everything online. Its the future, baby.
- TheBudman84, on 03/06/2008, -4/+13Especially since they've FINALLY implemented a game rating system not based on numbers. The letter grade always made more sense to me.
- Subacious, on 03/06/2008, -3/+12You're entitled to your opinion, but WHY does EGM "***** suck"?
- tonich03, on 03/06/2008, -0/+8Seriously. I watch the 1up show weekly and I don't even play games, it's just so well done and entertaining.
- derekjhunt, on 03/06/2008, -1/+9Oh no! How will I find that sweet mail order company on page 232 of last months computer shopper? I'll never get that 16.8 zyxel modem now. My Zeos Pantera will always be incomplete. Thankfully, Rusty and Edies number is still on the BBS list.
- nickthedude, on 03/06/2008, -0/+8now it makes sense why everyone is leaving 1up and dl.tv. just today bryan ihnthar(sp?) announced his plans to leave after just recently being named as one of the "permanent" 4 chairs of 1up yours. hopefully 1up sticks around in some form or fashion as they put out some of the best content for gamers on the net, especially their podcasts both audio and video. My worry is that the expense associated with bandwidth and just the general bloat associated with gaming sites (filefront, gamevideos, etc) basically there is just too many loss leaders in an organization like this, at least that is the view from the outside.
anyway good luck to the 1up crew, we love you. - hermizzle, on 03/06/2008, -1/+9I've always liked EGM and 1UP.com. I hope everything turns out for the best.
- WhereAmI, on 03/06/2008, -3/+10No, EGM looks like crap and is poorly written. Hurts my brain when I read it.
Then again its not like I enjoy ANY gaming magazines. - USAOwnz, on 03/06/2008, -2/+9Great to see a company caring about their employees. I hope Ziff Davis makes it through, they're cool.
- Zoglog, on 03/06/2008, -0/+7I wouldn't worry too much about the future of the podcasts and 1up. Most of the success of Ziff Davis is tied in those 2 aspects. I personally listen to GFW Radio, EGM Live, and 1up Yours (though it can get a bit melodramatic sometimes).
Either way this really is more like a second chance for the company to get themselves in order. Lets hope the print mag doesn't fully die, I still enjoy reading those in the restroom :) - Darthyoshiboy, on 03/06/2008, -1/+8ZD has really been swirling the bowl as of late, hopefully they restructure into something "ZD circa '98"
- Sawta, on 03/06/2008, -1/+7Bah, I hope this doesn't affect their podcasting schedule too much.. I subscribe to just about all of them! I don't really care what their reviews have to say as most gaming mags give games scores that they defiantly don't deserve...epically for the price you're paying, however, I really like their personalities, and their podcasts keep me entertained for just about the entire week. :/
- Rustiga, on 03/06/2008, -0/+6Bad tings comin' mon.
- fLUx1337, on 03/06/2008, -1/+7Stopped watching DL.TV when patrick moved to Rev3. Robbert and Roger (now moved also - hope to see him on screen sometime) were great and all but patrick usually always took the lead....
Rev3 is pretty much all I watch now a days, but would LOVE DL.TV to move to Rev3, but then again most of the rev3 stuff is staged, so the stuff which made me like dl.tv, i.e. the mistakes, the realism, the Robbert poking his hand out and changing the TV to a different input, it would all be removed if it was a rev3 show. It would basically be tekzilla - Scrappy1850, on 03/06/2008, -0/+6they aren't dead. do you know what bankruptcy is?
- Subacious, on 03/06/2008, -1/+7If someone has ad block turned on, I doubt that they would be clicking ads even if they could.
- dansmeek, on 03/06/2008, -0/+6ZD could sell the rights to 1up to another company for cash. And you could hope that 1up would retain the same editorial staff, etc. You won't see any immediate effects. EGM is a print-magazine which costs a lot more money to run than a website.
- jefferygomer, on 03/06/2008, -0/+5Ziff-Davis had Car and Driver from Mar 1956–Apr 1985. As in Ziff Davis last did Car and Driver almost 24 years ago.
