- Stormwern, on 05/13/2009, -8/+87I want to know more about the lesbians.
- Shao00, on 05/13/2009, -11/+71Valkyria Chronicles is an amazingly entertaining game once you get into it. He definitely has a point about the cut scenes.
- kouzu, on 05/13/2009, -22/+76Valkyria Chronicles is the best game I've played in years, and almost every reviewer thinks it's a wonderful game; so, I would take this "review" with a grain of salt. Just look at some of the game review aggregation sites. The simple matter is that his reviews are entertaining because they are so sarcastic. You shouldn't expect objectivity.
http://www.gamestats.com/objects/950/950634/ - wolfing, on 05/13/2009, -16/+69I love Valkyria Chronicles, so there.
- roseap, on 05/13/2009, -11/+54Republicans, you got served!
- UselessTrivia, on 05/13/2009, -2/+37I think if you went through his back-archive you'd find that's not really true at all. He savages third person shooters just as often as anything else. Too human, RE5, Gears of War, etc...
This review was actually fairly positive as far as ZP reviews go. - wolfing, on 05/13/2009, -2/+28replace "JRPG's" with "shooters" or "RTS" and that's exactly what I would say. That's why not all games are the same, people like different things
- awtripp, on 05/13/2009, -8/+32...
He said he found himself enjoying it, but was dragged down by the extremely outweighed cut scene ***** versus actual playable game -- that and all the pointless micro managing.
I have to say I agree. - noahgelman, on 05/13/2009, -2/+23Digg has spoken
- kingmanic, on 05/13/2009, -41/+62Valkyria Chronicles is awesome. One of the best strategy games I've played in a while. Yahtzee just doesn't like games other than third person shooters.
- inactive, on 05/13/2009, -1/+21Bald. Space. Marines.
- greeniemeani, on 05/13/2009, -12/+32Best. Game. For. PS3.
Seriously though, read amazon.com customer reviews for this game. There are over a hundred and almost all of them are 5 stars. - mikemil828, on 05/13/2009, -3/+23A third person shooter where all enemies stop shooting when you go into aiming mode.
//Yahtzee just doesn't like games other than third person shooters.//
Yahtzee doesn't really like games period. That's why the various fanboys like him so much because he can be counted on to make mountains out of molehills on pretty much any game he reviews and thus riling up the opposition, and yet remain unbiased in everyone's eyes (except when it comes to JRPGs of which he unabashedly hates unconditionally, but no one cares about that). I do have to admit, it a pretty nice gig he's got, I guarantee you'll never go hungry by making fanboys angry. - WtrMan, on 05/13/2009, -7/+23Well that's a shame considering it's one of the best games on the PS3 if you like SRPGs.
- JudgeMonkey, on 05/13/2009, -2/+16And Yahtzee is never wrong about any game... EVER!
You may think he is at first, but when you think about what he really says, you will discover that he has somehow turned opinion into fact!
No sarcasm, the man is awesome. - bradleyjx, on 05/13/2009, -2/+15I like them, but I completely understand people who can't stand a game which says "oh wait, we need to go into a battle, so now watch the _exact_ same 10 second blur effect magically moving into a battle scene with the same music you've heard a million times to face a lv.1 mook."
- ratnacage, on 05/13/2009, -0/+11Troll obvious Troll
- Mullinsmcd, on 05/13/2009, -1/+13The criticism regarding the menu system, autosave, and nagging cutscene questions were all very valid, but I definitely feel it was a great attempt and a great game in general. I hope that it sells enough copies for the next game (or another game based on this engine) to make it to US shores again.
- Ultrace, on 05/13/2009, -6/+17Yahtzee generally does a good job with his reviews and this is no different--but it IS based on opinion. I love Valkyria Chronicles. It's by no means perfect (I like the cutscenes, although there are a lot of them; the menu system is indeed a bit cumbersome; some battles harken back to the insanely unfair difficulty of FFT's Chapter 3 fight with Wiegraf), but some of his points really illustrate what the game is making you experience. For example, as a new commander, you're not going to know every quirk of your team until you actually fight with them a little bit, for instance. So, you DO have to make some slightly uninformed decisions, especially early on.
Oh, and the comparison of the characters in VC to other, more traditional "androgynous" affairs is more than a little off-base, in my own counter-opinion. There are openly gay characters in the game, one of whom is male and definitely looks "flaming"; apart from that, I really didn't see any of the Cloud/Titus/etc. girl-boy characters going on. But, to each their own.
I can only hope that, despite the negativity of the review, exposure via Zero Punctuation helps to bring Valkyria Chronicles more to the forefront where people might get a chance to experience it. - ParticleMan420, on 05/14/2009, -4/+15***** you i wont do what you tell me
- leighlee, on 05/14/2009, -0/+10Occasionally, yahtzee spouts some stellar alliteration. I have to give him props for that... and for teaching me how to appropriately use the term ***** in a sentence at a spelling bee.
"Your word to spell is: *****"
"*****. Can I hear it in a sentence?"
"Yes. Here it is: 'But Valkyria Chronicles messes itself around too much; aside from the action being outnumbered five-to-one by cut scenes and muddy, menu-driven, micromanagement *****, enemies should not be able to shoot you when it's not their ***** turn.' ...*****."
"*****: M-O-T...." - Defiant001, on 05/13/2009, -13/+22This guy does some of the best game reviews I know of, even if I'm not interested in the game or even heard of it I watch them for a good laugh with the things he says.
- HomeSkillz, on 05/13/2009, -0/+9It's because there haven't been very many AAA titles out recently.
- b3njio, on 05/13/2009, -0/+9LOL if you take his reviews seriously guess your only stuck to playing valve games and Prince of Persia 1 and 2. Don't get me wrong great series/company but variety is somewhat limited.
- b3njio, on 05/14/2009, -0/+9I love the game personally and what Yahtzee says is more or less very true. It's up to the individual to choose to love the game or not, I frankly come back every week for the chuckles and get different perspective of the game. I'm pretty sure you knew deep down the review was going to be a slaughter house JRPGS and Yahtzee just doesn't mix. Looking forward to the onslaught of FF XII >.<
- styx31989, on 05/13/2009, -0/+9people just need to understand to NOT TAKE HIS STUFF SERIOUSLY!!!
He is there to entertain us, not because we value his opinions. He's funny as hell, but I go other places for REAL reviews. I advise everyone else to do the same. - hermizzle, on 05/13/2009, -5/+14Burst out laughing when he was talking about the Sniper always getting pegged first. So true.
- dok333, on 05/14/2009, -2/+10...wearing your badge and your clothed in white..
***** you got that song caught in my head - Kravin, on 05/13/2009, -1/+9Because you don't agree with him? Or...?
- Radan, on 05/13/2009, -1/+8I say he's both an entertainer and a reviewer. He says exactly what he thinks about the game. He doesn't always say whether he actually overall liked the game or not, but he talks about the things that annoy him, where mostly it's very valid points.
He doesn't like JRPGs and he sure doesn't hide it. Why he is not the one you should perhaps listen to if you are in fact into that genre. - jaredh999, on 05/13/2009, -5/+11"Ah, yes we all know who's Bratwurst you lot were snacking on back then." LMAO.
- 5Horizons, on 05/13/2009, -5/+11Nah, I think he made some good points. It's a good game but could have been great if they would have streamlined and fixed some parts of it.
Weapon upgrades/going to the cemetery/getting special guns/etc were all pretty tedious and boring. The game's best asset was its actual combat, but it seemed like they tried to do everything they could to keep you busy doing other stuff.
Another problem I had with it was the overemphasis on speed rather than actual tactics. Often times it was smarter to run out in the open and do "stupid" things just so you could run past all the enemy's tanks/troops and capture their flag. The computer AI for this game was generally pretty poor. - achoo5000, on 05/13/2009, -4/+10muddy menu-driven micromanagement *****
- TimeOutofMind, on 05/13/2009, -9/+15I don't understand why Yahtzee hates Japanese rpgs so much. I'm no anime fan myself, but I still find certain jrpgs like the final fantasy games to be some of the most interesting and involving games I've ever played. I'm not always crazy about the aesthetic (i.e. androgynous characters), but the story and the gameplay are more important to me and they are what I remember the game for anyway.
- solmakou, on 05/14/2009, -0/+6A gay fish.
- bonk2k, on 05/13/2009, -1/+6Thank you for describing the moment you mentioned instead of just leaving it at "Dugg for 2:25" So many times a digger will leave a comment like "my favorite picture was number 14" and I will have to reload the page just to see if I agree.
- greeniemeani, on 05/13/2009, -1/+6How is that different from anything else (music, games, books, etc) that are in the same genre?
- afultz075, on 05/14/2009, -0/+5I've been playing through this game for the last couple weeks, and I can say I would NOT want an in-battle autosave. For some of the maps there is a bit of a trial and error approach. Save your game, try approach 1, if that doesn't work or your characters get too damaged, try the second approach. Autosave makes it possible that it will save over previous progress and put me in a position where it is extremely difficult or impossible to win the battle without restarting the battle.
Of course, this is assuming they did away with the manual save and made it auto-save only during battles. - b3njio, on 05/14/2009, -0/+5I have no idea what your on about i guess troll is troll. Nice work.
- Kravin, on 05/13/2009, -10/+15I love his reviews, but people need to keep in mind that he hates JRPGs, so of course he's going to hate this game. I mean, his GOTY for 2008 was Saints Row 2. Someone who has SR2 as his game of the year probably isn't going to also think Valkyria Chronicles is good.
- kingmanic, on 05/13/2009, -0/+5Last Remnant 360 would be a review of the crashes, long loading, and a protagonists you hate so much you wish he'd die. Last Remnant PC would just be about the last thing.
- Mullinsmcd, on 05/13/2009, -5/+10Hes not a reviewer hes an entertainer. I have the game and I love it but don't worry about defending the game from Yahtzee. This review was actually much more tame then the majority of the others, whether he liked the game or not.
- Halsfield, on 05/13/2009, -0/+5jesushappytimeforkids trolly genre ?
- Ultrace, on 05/13/2009, -1/+5It's a smart move for the computer to make; true, it happens a lot and can be irritating, but if the computer didn't do it, then people would probably complain that it had no AI and stood there while your sniper took out all of their guys from a safe distance.
- pimpofpixels, on 05/14/2009, -0/+4Valkyria Chronicles is the only PS3 game I've ever gotten my girlfriend to play through with me.
It's one of the best Turn-Based Strategy games ever made. - zaxnyd, on 05/14/2009, -0/+4What the hell?
- JollyDumple, on 05/13/2009, -0/+4I just recently found out that you can save in the middle of battles, so that's kind of helpful.
- LaughingMan11, on 05/14/2009, -1/+5Actually when he mentioned the autosave, I had to smile because he probably missed that you can literally save the game after any turn from the System menu, even in combat mode...
He kept dying, but if he saved at the beginning of every turn he would have been fine. There's no need to start the mission over. - Renian, on 05/14/2009, -0/+4Oh, sweet.
