- hibachipenguins, on 11/05/2007, -26/+212this is the most honest and intelligent review of Halo yet, thank you Yahtzee you charismatic stallion
- dontaskagain, on 11/08/2007, -25/+195The best review yet from ZP! I thought it was only me that couldn't understand why this game was hype'd up so much.
- amitlu, on 11/05/2007, -21/+126Just perfect!
- LiThiuMElectro, on 11/08/2007, -10/+86shhh you'll wake up the fanboys :S
- MrObjectional, on 10/15/2007, -6/+65No no no, just ferpect!
- Artaxs, on 10/12/2007, -7/+61I find myself looking forward to Wednesdays and my weekly dose of Dry British Humour (tm).
- RogerH, on 10/25/2007, -22/+67I know this is the "See!? I *knew* all that hype last week was overblown" thread, so I'll be dugg down before I finish typing, but let's get some things clear:
He admits right up front that he hasn't played either Halo. I'm pretty sure if this doesn't exclude someone from reviewing the game, it should at least be taken into consideration.
He calls out that several things in the game have been done before. He's right! See my above comment. Halo spawned numerous FPS features which are now considered commonplace, such as regenerating health, restrictions on weapons you can hold at one time, etc.
He doesn't play multiplayer. I don't have the figures, but some insane percentage of people who bought Halo last week took the game online, almost bringing the servers to a halt. Very few people who are fanatical about Halo are playing *just* for the campaign.
He says the game cycles in difficulty. Again, see my first comment. Pacing was one of the things that the first Halo brought mainstream, interchanging fierce gunfighting with vehicular sequences. It isn't supposed to be one steady treadmill upwards. And of course, that treadmill varies *greatly* depending on the difficulty you are playing. Normal can seem like a run-and-gun shooter at times, while Legendary or even Heroic can seem like a tactical strategy game. So, I don't think blanket statements on difficulty are really possible with the Halo series.
It's pretty clear from his reference to Bioshock that he probably isn't the target audience for this game. They are very different games even from a single player experience. Halo has always been contrasted against games like Bioshock, and other "thinking" shooters, and it never intends to be anything other than what it is. He's comparing apples to oranges with this reference, and even Half Life doesn't seem properly placed next to the Halo series in my opinion.
I normally love this guy's reviews, and he definitely points out flaws which have been stated before, even in people's glowing reviews he rags on so much.
However, apparently reviewing a Honda Civic as if it were a Porche 911 in a speedy, cockney accent is enough fuel to the fire of the Sony Defense Force to keep them from admitting that Halo 3 might actually be a really, really great game. - Jordan117, on 11/01/2007, -40/+81Amusing, but biased, and unsurprisingly so. Yahtzee's always been a Halo hater (despite never having played either of the first two games), and regularly mocked them even in reviews for other titles. How can he give an honest review of this one?
Also, is it just me or is it kind of idiotic to try reviewing a trilogy-ender's campaign without having any experience with the first two? Of course the story will seem "schizophrenic" when you have no clue what's happening or why, especially in a game that has lots of great moments hearkening back to the original. - Legopirate, on 10/12/2007, -8/+44Thanks Yahtzee for getting me through another Wednesday at work!
- Wildog27, on 10/31/2007, -3/+38I can't wait for his review of Captain Bland's Monotonous Adventure.
- Eronamanthius, on 11/07/2007, -8/+43Yahtzee reminds me of the Simon Cowell of game reviews...except with more dignity.
- l0tharnt, on 10/12/2007, -10/+44Ive yet to play Halo 3 myself, but I can't take any review seriously coming from a guy who has never played the other two.
It's like watching return of the jedi and complaining that you have no idea whats going on. STFU and watch the ones before it. - Frostman3D, on 11/01/2007, -14/+42Spot on review. I like Halo3, but it is very short, and takes itself way too seriously.
- sparql, on 10/12/2007, -8/+36I'd disagree that the multiplayer is the 'secondary' part of the game. In fact, I'd argue it's the main portion. One needs only to visit Bungie.net to understand that hey designed Halo 3 as a multiplayer experience. Not to mention that everyone I know has only been playing campaign when they aren't playing multiplayer.
They sell the single player position of it because frankly, that is what makes sense in a commercial or a magazine ad. - xjedi, on 10/12/2007, -17/+43finally , an honest review of halo 3.
- tsukiyo, on 10/10/2007, -3/+28guh... bury... I just read this on the site: Yahtzee is a British-born, currently Australian-based writer.
Foot -> Mouth - phaseblue, on 10/31/2007, -6/+30From the video: "Average, boilerplate, run of the mill, a competent shooter, its only remarkable feature being the degree to which it's stuck up its own ass." True of any of the three, I would say.
- LeadHead, on 10/30/2007, -2/+26I am a big halo fan, i read the books and enjoyed the plot, i do love the multiplayer, and yeah this review did hurt inside.
But no other review could make me hurt and laugh at the same time. You sure do have a way with words, ZP. - underthewether, on 10/12/2007, -5/+28I loved the beginning music choice.
- santasing, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23I don't care whether or not anyone likes Halo 3 or not, but this guys reviews are always hilarious. Stumbled across his videos a couple of days ago. Really well done!
- thekaempfer, on 10/12/2007, -18/+37Finally, someone actually reviews this game...
- toxicshok, on 10/31/2007, -2/+21I hear it's so-so
- Synn, on 11/08/2007, -5/+23So basically...you don't like people having opinions about things?
- hibachipenguins, on 10/31/2007, -17/+35That's the problem with it, the game is not a multiplayer game, the campaign is what they sell the game based on. It's extremely sad that a game has to use a secondary section to "make up for" the main part.
Sure average games can get away with this but people treat this game way too highly, it's not a great game, it IS just average! - Scintillatus, on 10/12/2007, -5/+22I think the best way to look at this is that "I liked it" isn't a 10. 10 is supposed to be "perfect", not "pretty fun to play with your mates".
- inactive, on 10/30/2007, -10/+26Loved halo:ce, hated halo 2, I'm back in love with Halo 3. Best multiplayer game of the year. I'd say it lived up to the hype. 4 player online co-op? Map editor? 16 player lan, 12 player online? Good stuff.
- ScrumFritter, on 10/10/2007, -2/+17He got you through the whole day? How many times did you watch this?
- bethune, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17If you buy Halo 3 only for the single player you will be disappointed. The multiplayer adds so much to the game that it comes out becoming great overall.
Online 4 player co-op is awesome. Games are more fun when you play with other people but these reviewers have apparently not figured that out. - Christbait, on 10/31/2007, -7/+21remember these two words, "Corporate hype", my friend. Aided by one of the richest corps in the world.
However, I thought the Campaign totally shat all over the previous 2, I had more fun with this one. - directive0, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17I am not making a comment in regards to Halo. I honestly cannot say whether it is good or bad. But never ever use the argument "Lots of people play/use/buy it so it must be good" it is a complete fallacy.
- CorpT, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15I thought Empire Strikes Back sucked because I didn't understand who Luke was and the ending didn't have any conclusion to it.
- dafragsta, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Who are you to determine the points that make people pull the trigger on the purchase? I'm betting that a substantial percentage of the people who bought Halo 3 bought it for multiplayer first and singleplayer second. Sure they'll play through the campaign at least once, but that's like saying people bought Battlefield 2 for the bot experience.
You buy Bioshock for the single player experience first and foremost. - Rockmaninoff, on 10/10/2007, -2/+15That, really, seriously, no-joke, was not a sentence.
- kidtsunami, on 10/22/2007, -2/+14As a PC gamer I was impressed. And my opinion is more valid than yours for some reason.
- wageslaven, on 10/12/2007, -5/+16You could not be more correct. That doesnt mean we cant all have a chuckle at this video, its not a game review, but a joke. People in this forum saying "ah-ha! finally an honest review!" are trying too hard.
- bmorlok, on 10/12/2007, -10/+21I usually like his reviews but this one is not good. He is trying too hard to bash the game. He complains about the AI but it is better than most games (i haven't had the NPC problems he describes). Additionally, the HDR lighting is nowhere near as annoying how he describes it. He is just going for shock value.
- Spytap, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12Me too, Wednesdays are better because of Yahtzee.
- exomni, on 10/22/2007, -2/+13Thankfully I'm not a stupid dick who considers himself knowledgable about games while not even owning any consoles. I play both the PC and all the consoles, and I can assure you: Halo 3 is fantastic, and would be heralded as god of all were it put out by some idie dev (similar to many other popular games that the "cool" kids scream "overrated" at).
- jigga, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12But his point is, not before Halo was released. Health regeneration is very common place now. The COD games have it, as well as Rainbow Six. How many games before Halo only allowed you to carry a limited number of guns. Not many come to my mind.
- 31073, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12I think there is a substantial minority who have no interest in multiplayer.. I wont play online anymore. Mainly cause I dont have the time to put in to get good at a game, and so it isn't fun to spend an hour getting my ass handed to me.
- BestJaxx, on 11/08/2007, -7/+17This guy is a complete moron who doesn't know how to insult people properly.
- kidtsunami, on 10/10/2007, -12/+21But he didn't actually review the game, he took a few parts of the game and made fun of their nature. The times he actually comes close to commenting on the game, he uses generalizations such as "Its already been done better by everyone else". The guy is brilliantly hilarious, but anyone trying to discern quality commentary out of this video is just fooling themselves, and taking it too seriously.
- dudefather, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10you best not be messing with Duke, he's got BALLS OF STEEL
- JEWestbrookJR, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9I completely agree with this review. That is until he decides to just 100% disreguard multiplayer. Campaign = mediocre. Multiplayer = The best any console has to offer. Yes, a lot of people don't care about multiplayer, but a lot more do.
- endlessoul, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Agreed. Halo 3 is worth it. I also agree with Yahtzee. He's a witty, honest guy and Halo has indeed been over-hyped. Halo 3 rules, Yahtzee should never, ever stop making reviews.
- tb0n3r, on 10/10/2007, -4/+12He didn't say that nobody cares about multiplayer. He said he didn't. Then he went on to say that the multiplayer doesn't "excuse" the single player, and that if it really was the greatest game in the universe, it wouldn't need to be "excused" by the multiplayer, anyway.
Q.E.D. - hmunkey, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10Halo 3 is amazing. I know everyone here is anti-MS so I'm probably going to get Dugg down a lot, but people, be fair. I hate the hypocrisy of everyone talking about fairness and then giving it a complete disregard because of previous opinions.
- Parisian, on 10/31/2007, -2/+10You're an idiot. Learn how to play on the new maps. Don't complain about a game being too similar and then in the next sentence complain that the new game has (OH NO!) new maps! I'm sick and tired of playing on re-hashed maps.
- Jordan117, on 10/30/2007, -5/+13Dude, it's a trilogy. A story arc that progresses over the course of three games. Of course the plot of the third will be supported by the previous installments. This isn't an episodic TV show, but a single epic narrative. A narrative that inspired three full-length campaigns, four decent novels, and endless fan speculation, along with other spin-offs, like Peter Jackson's project and the comic series. I wouldn't call that "paper thin". People who bash the Halo story as shallow should do some investigating. There's an entire universe rich in story to be found beyond the games, from the growth of humanity before the war to the development of the SPARTAN program, from the radio drama of ilovebees to the shocking betrayals of Mendicant Bias and the love story of the Librarian and the Didact. Just because the single-player campaign doesn't drown the player in exposition doesn't mean the story is shallow. And the references to the first games were not crutches, by the by, but subtle in-jokes for longtime fans.
As for the high marks, I think they're perfectly justifiable. Looked at in isolation, things like the single-player campaign or the Forge are not world-changing. But taken together into one polished package, they're an incredible deal. Add into the mix superb integration with Bungie.net and the fun things the community is sure to produce and Halo 3 easily becomes gold material. - Magnifico, on 10/10/2007, -7/+15how can you rate the campaign and you havent played the first 2. that's why you don't understand a lot of the things in the campaign.
