- aleatoric, on 10/28/2009, -7/+86I'm so glad he (Yahtzee/Zero Punctuation) reviewed this game with his usual refreshingly dismissive edge. My stomach turns at the splurging of 8s and 9s I see handed to this game on Metacritic. Every hot title that comes out these days seems to get plastered with an overwhelmingly positive circle jerk when they barely deserve a nod.
- Echuu, on 10/28/2009, -9/+70bruuutal legend. lol
- Sylocat, on 10/28/2009, -2/+52So Jack Black IS Tim Schafer! That would explain... er... not a whole lot, really...
- numb, on 10/28/2009, -1/+45"I studied German, alright? I refuse to let an umlaut go unpronounced."
--Yahtzee - jordandev, on 10/28/2009, -3/+40I'm probably about half way through the game and have liked it so far. The gameplay isn't exactly the greatest thing I've ever played, but it is fun enough that it is enjoyable. The story and humor keep me there.
This games combat plays similar to Sacrifice. - Keimatsu, on 10/28/2009, -1/+37Or if a game just isn't out in Australia yet.
- IHaveIssues, on 10/28/2009, -5/+33Actually it kinda looks like fun: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fIbiV28faok
- scottrothman, on 10/28/2009, -1/+26Nothing Tim Schafer makes will ever top Day of the Tentacle. It's a masterpiece.
- HyperJack, on 10/28/2009, -1/+26Was hoping for Uncharted 2 this week!
- Skyplatoon, on 10/28/2009, -6/+24What a gamer.....! We all bow to you.
- mrdeadhead, on 10/28/2009, -1/+18Ü <- but they're like smiley faces
- Radan, on 10/28/2009, -1/+18With some slight spoiler, I'd like to pronounce what really made this game for me.
"DECAPITATIOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOON!!!!!!" - Puppytwo, on 10/28/2009, -2/+18He wouldn't be much of a critic if he had nothing but positive things to say. This is what critics do, they criticize.
- huggkruka, on 10/28/2009, -0/+15Damn straight, umlauts are way too abüsed!
- iconmaster, on 10/28/2009, -1/+14He generally doesn't review the games he likes... because those reviews are far less entertaining.
If ZP tackles something it's probably to shred it. - A5204, on 10/28/2009, -1/+14I buy games in order to turn my 360 into a really inefficient iPod too!
- uberduger, on 10/28/2009, -1/+14Fair enough. I just like it for the forum aspect of it, don't know about the others.
- Cretius0, on 10/28/2009, -5/+18Dugg for fight club reference at the end.
- peteyb1313, on 10/29/2009, -0/+12So what you meant to say was that it is barely an 8? If it was "EASILY" an 8, why would it be so preposterous to give it a 9?
- master69better, on 10/28/2009, -7/+19When the Yahtz delays a review there are usually two reasons;
1. He likes the game and can't get over playing more of it
2. Its difficult to fault it, so the sarcasm has to be directed at other similar games while extolling the virtues of the game he is reviewing. So more work. - acdcfanbill, on 10/28/2009, -2/+14Rust in Peace?
- elliotys, on 10/28/2009, -1/+12The game is worth a play through. If you have a decent surround sound, its pretty fun to crank up the metal and go to town on the bad guys. I think if they made a few minor changes, like improve the fighting system for eddie, give more control over the RTS function, and make a more diverse set of side missions, then the game could really be great.
- smashfest, on 10/28/2009, -2/+13yeah, the RTS portion of the game is pretty annoying, until you realize you can just summon beasts in front of the enemy's stage/towers and they'll tear it apart in like three minutes. win
- Halsfield, on 10/28/2009, -0/+11I think the statute of limitations has long since expired for that movie.
- HalsMyPal, on 10/28/2009, -1/+12except for portal!
- JeffRyemon, on 10/28/2009, -9/+18As loose as your mom on a jet engine
- gavintlgold, on 10/28/2009, -3/+11I have to say, I hate whenever umlauts are used unnecessarily. :(
- SlayerConman, on 10/28/2009, -3/+11Dugg down.
Oh, by the way, there's multiplayer. Blah blah blah. - jestho, on 10/28/2009, -1/+9Then you would have loved the 80s.
- WebCester, on 10/28/2009, -2/+10Not even close, really.
- aladrin, on 10/28/2009, -6/+13This is one of the few reviews of his that make me actually want the game instead. The things he hates are the things I like. heh.
- mrdeadhead, on 10/28/2009, -0/+6you must not have seen where he gobbled Portlal's nuts.
- decoy26517, on 10/29/2009, -0/+6except for Psychonauts!
- HCProgramr, on 10/28/2009, -1/+7Y'know, I didn't think of that...I'll have to try it now.
- WolfHook, on 10/28/2009, -5/+10I love Zero Punctuation, those reviews have saved me loads of money!
- TheAbsintheHare, on 10/28/2009, -0/+5It's called a shtick, dumbass. It's what makes the show entertaining.
- Mayday408, on 10/28/2009, -2/+7You're funny because you take his reviews seriously instead of enjoying his nit-picking. Silly retard.
- xXM3talHeadXx, on 10/28/2009, -3/+8That pretty much describes my experience with the game perfectly
- TotalHalibut, on 10/29/2009, -1/+6Except y'know, Brutal Legend deserves it and has sufficient innovation, charm and fun-factor to warrant that kind of score. Yahtzee goes out of his way to nitpick, that's his schtick and I'll be honest, anyone who bases their purchase decisions off of his reviews is going to end up with an exceptionally small games collection. He is doing this for laughs, take it with a grain of salt.
- HCProgramr, on 10/28/2009, -7/+12ZP for this was a bit harsh, but in the end, true.
It's an incredible game that drops you in the middle of a breathtaking world with things hidden in the d*mndest places, lessons to be learned the hard way, and hints so subtle only an old-school gamer will pick up on them [Such as the unattended Metal Beast in the swamp, which is standing right next to a very, very well hidden path with goodies on it].
My big complaints are the 'by-the-nose' story [go here to reveal the <twist> that you'll never see coming even though we just told you about it!] and the spotty order-giving during boss battles...the only one that works even reasonably reliably is the 'go here' marker. I'm also not a fan of roaming around the world, finding the geysers, and knowing exactly where boss battles will take place as a result...I think the game would've been better served for the geysers to show up right before the battle, rather than being there permanently. Not a deal-breaker, just a quibble.
And though I have my complaints, the $60 week-one purchase price was well worth it. A gamer with a little creativity can find plenty of replay value beyond looking for missing stuff and playing multiplayer; my favorite is racing against the radio: Can I get from point A to point B, going past arbitrary points C, D, and E before song X finishes playing. - uberduger, on 10/28/2009, -0/+5Füçk yöü!!!
- beakerbite, on 10/29/2009, -0/+4He has praised many games in his reviews. If he enjoyed it he tells you that he enjoyed it, but then he also proceeds to say what parts he didn't enjoy and usually gets in the point that many game developers are just copying each other instead of generating genuine games.
- Anifanatic, on 10/29/2009, -0/+4And Saint's Row 2.
And Psychonauts.
And Silent Hill 2. - Jhonka, on 10/29/2009, -0/+4It shouldn't BE that way though. Not with games, not with movies, not with television.. When it takes you years and years to produce these works of art, and you deliver them with flaws, you have failed. I demand perfection in a $50 BILLION dollar industry. Near-perfect games should not be nearly as rare as they are.
- mrdeadhead, on 10/28/2009, -0/+4that's an insult to tim schafer.
i think... - noizeuk, on 10/28/2009, -0/+4Mmmm Branston Pickle.
- Rioracer916, on 10/30/2009, -0/+4Where are the 7/10 games? A 70% is average, not bad. I get the sense that this game is a solid C (75%), meaning its flaws don't outweigh the positives, but not by much.
I'm pretty tired of every game with a large marketing budget getting at least an 8/10 score on these review sites. All that does in this consumers mind is redefine the rating scale:
<8.0 = Not worth my time renting or pirating
8.0+ = Average or heavily marketed crap game
9.0 = Above Average or heavily marketed crap game
10 = Excellent game with possible deal breaker flaws for some.
Yahtzee is refined and nuanced with his reviews, masked with a veil of crude humor to keep low brow audiences entertained. People tend to have a hard time interpreting whether he thinks a game is worth playing or not and dismiss him as being overly negative. I personally think he's right on the money and says what the major review sites and fanboys are too afraid to say.
Keep up the good work! - Schmich, on 10/28/2009, -1/+5I'm having this strange déja vue feeling. I might have heard that before.
- immatellyouwhat, on 10/29/2009, -0/+4Yeah dude, we gave you 10 years to watch it, come...the *****...on.
- WafflesID, on 10/29/2009, -0/+4Yeah yeah, it's not tim shaffer, but....Still...
