- reddevil3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13That goes for most adventure games.
I finished the game in about 42 hours, plus I could easily spend another 8 finding other stuff. It's easily worth $50. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15Well it had sold a million by the end of December so this isn't really news...
http://www.vgcharts.org/amonthly.php - xerus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10I think you need to take the 3 heart challenge
Then take the 3 heart no bottles challenge. - MrMuffMeat, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12Well, I guess if you really want to compare the most sold game on any next gen machine, then technically it would be Hexic HD, and not Wii sports, since technically Hexic HD shipped with every premium 360 and every hard drive sold. It is kind of dumb to count a game that ships with EVERY console as the top seller. If you want to compare, then you really must compare Hexic HD with Wii sports, Gears with Zelda, and then COD 2 with what ever the second best selling Wii game is that isn't Wii sports.
- carpespasm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6welcome to digg's blocklist.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Let's not forget the Burger King games either.
It's great that a good game sold a lot, but it's really not a shocker. I'm actually really surprised it hasn't sold more. - FieldAnonymouse, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Some of us find Elebits, Excite Truck, Red Steel, Rayman, NFS:Carbon more interesting than Zelda. I borrowed Zelda from my friend. Played it for a while. Didn't really care for it. Probably won't go back and finish it. Like all games, it's not for everyone. There is not a single game to date that everyone loves. It just doesn't happen.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"The Legend of Zelda has been using the "weapon/dungeon" formula since the first 8-bit game, that's what a Zelda game is."
Go replay the first game. Nearly every item is useful in some capacity all over the map, and except for a few, they aren't actually NEEDED to beat the dungeon. Instead, you went for the items because the items were awesome. It's a MUCH better game overall than the recent ones, gameplay wise.
So no, Zelda wasn't always like this. Labyrinths also used to actually be labyrinths, and not thinly-veiled linear pathways. - enforcerpsu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7As it should sell a million. No matter what Gamespot thinks, its one of the greatest games ever made. When I was playing this game, even though it is a Zelda game, everything still felt fresh and innovative.
- SeriouslyButNo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"but I found the dungeon items very contrived and most often only used for their specific dungeon"
It's been that way since OoT. Never have any items apart from the Boomerang, Bow, and Bombs been particularly useful outside of the places they were meant to be used.
You can use them if you want to, of course, especially since most items can do more than one thing.. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Why would you do that without achievements? :P
- heysuburbia, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9Not a single game you mentioned was an Xbox launch title, in case you forgot, here are the gems you had for the Xbox during launch:
* Amped 3 (2K Sports)
* Call of Duty 2 (Activision)
* Condemned: Criminal Origins (SEGA)
* FIFA Soccer 06 Road to 2006 FIFA World Cup (Electronic Arts)
* GUN (Activision)
* Kameo: Elements of Power (Microsoft)
* Madden NFL 06 (Electronic Arts)
* NBA 2K6 (2K Sports)
* NBA LIVE 06 (Electronic Arts)
* Need for Speed Most Wanted (Electronic Arts)
* NHL 2K6 (2K Sports)
* Perfect Dark Zero (Microsoft)
* Peter Jackson's King Kong: The Official Game of the Movie (Ubisoft)
* Project Gotham Racing 3 (Microsoft)
* Quake 4 (id Software and Activision)
* Ridge Racer 6 (Namco)
* Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 06 (Electronic Arts)
* Tony Hawk's American Wasteland (Activision) - totorototoro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3loof,
not sure about the validity of vgcharts, but they show Wii:Twilight Princess at 1 million (500k/month for 2 months), and GC:Twilight Princess at 500K (1 month). - totorototoro, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Where does it say that in the article? Or are you claiming the article is inaccurate? Link to your source? thanks!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9I'm as big of a Wii fanboy as anyone, but am I the only one who came out dissapointed about Zelda?
Maybe it's just me, but I found the dungeon items very contrived and most often only used for their specific dungeon, the enemies to be predictable and easy to defeat after learning their simple patterns, and only doubly so for the bosses?
Never once did I have to continue on a boss, and never once did any enemy actually give me a decent swordfight once I learned their simplistic pattern.
I love the idea of the Wii, and I love my Wii, but Zelda needs to redefine itself if it wants to keep me as a fan.
(Hurry up, Metroid) - standalonematt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Only in the US. (or is it North America)
- SeriouslyButNo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Lol..who said I was trying to change his opinion? I just wanted to point something out.
- SeriouslyButNo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Man, I hated the Water Temple. It's still tedious to beat even when you know exactly what to do... -_-
You are right, Tilon. The first game didn't force you to get any items to finish the dungeons, and you can prefer it if you want, but this 'use item in dungeon' thing going on isn't anything new. It's been like this since OoT, or maybe as far back as LttP.
I agree with your wish, though. Now that they have perfected 3D gameplay with TP, they should start doing something new. - br0ck, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7@mrmuff - I don't think that's a good comparison, because everyone that buys a Wii wants Wii Sports. Proof of this is that it isn't bundled in Japan and by December 31st there were 1 million Wii's sold and 1 million copies of Wii Sports sold. I suspect the attach rate would have been very similar in the US.
- drlha, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I'm frankly amazed that the GC version sold so many copies (565,000 in December). That means overall Zelda:TP is doing some stunning business across both consoles.
- grumbel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2### I'm as big of a Wii fanboy as anyone, but am I the only one who came out dissapointed about Zelda?
You are not alone. Zelda:TP was flawed in many ways, most importantly far to linear and far to easy. Still a very good game, but not really worth the hype it got, especially when compared to the greatness of previous titles in the series. I agree that the first Zelda is from a game design standpoint much better then Zelda:TP and I really would wish Nintendo would go back to the first and reinvent the series from there.
One thing I missed most in TP was the total lack of need for exploration, you could just wrap around, didn't even need Epona (and couldn't really use her for most part of the game due to lack of wistle-grass). I would have much prefered a Zelda more along the lines of Shadow of the Colossus, i.e. a game with huge seamless terrain to explore, not just relatively tiny interconnected rooms. Even so there is pretty much nothing to discover beside a few geckos in SotC I have a ton more fun doing exploring there then in Zelda game, simply because the whole landscape is just way larger and more interesting then anything in Zelda:TP. - HappyScrappy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2SeriouslyButNo:
The hookshot was immensely useful outside its dungeon. Even its dumbed-down cousin the clawshot does okay in that fashion.
But I have to agree, when I found the silly gear you stand on, I almost quit playing. Even though it was used outside its dungeon, it's a contrived item.
I still liked the game. - HappyScrappy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Wow, that's a 40% attach rate. For one of the highest rated games nowadays.
Wii is going to be a nightmare for developers. N has sold so many Wiis to people who just aren't used to buying games that as a developer, it'll be a struggle to get decent attach rates. Of course, given that there's 3M+ Wiis out there already will help the pain a little. - heysuburbia, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"Just because that's the way it's always been doesn't make it right."
He didn't say it made it right nor did he say he wasn't entitled to his opinion. You sound like Sean Hannity, completely assuming his intentions then putting words in his mouth.
The Legend of Zelda has been using the "weapon/dungeon" formula since the first 8-bit game, that's what a Zelda game is. Do we really want this formula broken? They tried that in Zelda II, didn't work so well. - loof, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't think it'll be that bad, the majority of people who have bought Wiis so far are gamers. Most of the appeal for non gamers seems to come from the gamers with Wiis introducing them to their families and friends.
- thanksgiving, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I love the Zelda franchise but I thought this version was a bit boring and out of place for Zelda, kind of like Majora's Mask. The first several hours are really slow and unzeldalike too, and the whole wolf and midna thing don't fit at all in with the classic Zelda
oh well, Zelda still rules - BabyWookie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The 360 launch line-up did not have any definitive killers apps, but most of those games were actually good. Dead or Alive 4, Fight Night Round 3 and GRAW were "launch window" games, BTW. Sorry, but as far as launch line-ups go, I'd give the 360 an edge.
- trubbleshute, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"whole wolf and midna thing don't fit at all in with the classic Zelda"
How many games do you know of that have as much franchise-hype than the Legend of Zelda? The answer is not many. Every Zelda title has been hyped beyond belief, and living up to that is a tall order. You can be sure that any Zelda or Mario game is going to be on the top ten lists of that year.
The only problem with Twilight Princess, for all the bashers in the thread, is that it came out too late. If TP came out before Wind Waker then it'd be a different story. I think we will only see one more LoZ game on the Wii. - Linh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I was wondering this myself... can anyone confirm if it's for just the wii or both systems?
- freetyme, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1tilon
I've yet to own it or a Wii, but I've played my friends a lot. I would have to disagree with you I think its a great game. Not that it matters though, Nintendo says it is "The Last Zelda of its kind"... - raisinbrainMMM, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5I think what really counts when comparing the Wii vs 360 numbers is Number of copies sold versus number of console units on consumers hands.
This would make Twilight Princess and Gears of War pretty even, since there are about 10 million 360's out in the market and 3.5 million wii's... - mcaaronice, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Where does it say in the article that this is for the Wii version alone? It doesn't. She only said that TP has sold a million copies in NA alone, she didn't say which version, intentionally.
- enharmonix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1oops. digg down.

"Even the PS3 had a stronger lineup at launch according to the critics."
This is true; however, the majority of strong launch titles for the PS3 are also on the 360, and in many cases, the 360 versions received better reviews.

Check it out for yourself, if you don't believe me. It seems to work for most other ports, as well. I don't want to hate, but it shocked me when I first compared. They do have Ridge Racer and Resistance though, I'll give them that. - enharmonix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Heh, that stupid gear, what a pointless item. My two favorites are the new *useful* items - the ball & chain, and the double clawshot. I remember in the great fairy cave, I looked down and there was one room near the very end absolutely stuffed moblins and keeses, and my wife asked how I planned to fight them all. "Watch this," I said, jumped down and just swung that ball and chain around my head as it clobbered every last bad guy that came near me. That second clawshot though, was the real surprise. When I found it, I was kind of disappointed at first. "WTF? I already have a clawshot" until it dawns on me what that means... Brilliant.
I do miss magic arrows, though I'm not to Dark Hyrule Castle yet so I don't know if there's any more items. - enforcerpsu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@ Tilon.
While I agree with you some recent Zelda games could of been harder...and the combat perhaps a _bit_ more varied...I think you are way over simplifying the recent games. Look at the staggering leap from 2d to 3d the game designers have taken. Faithful recreations of 2d dungeons into 3d isn't a simple task. Creating an environment which allows the user freedom, yet forces the use of items just makes sure you stay on track and don't get yourself stuck. Force feeding you the items means you have to learn them and experience them rather than just saying, "ah screw it". I would be willing to bet that if you could bypass the items in the new version, they gameplay would be MUCH more shallow.
Well, just my 2 cents. I think the next Zelda will actually be more adventure oriented and a little less scripted. Nintendo has already stated this is the last LOZ that will be built around this type of gameplay. - enforcerpsu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@ Tilon.
I guess you are forgetting the water temple. - Tonyisbad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Not true, i was one of the lucky folks who got a wii at launch with a buddy of mine. While he got Zelda and Rayman, i got red steel and DBZ. I've had my wii since then and i haven't even opened up red steel yet and i bought zelda off of ebay and i haven't even played 5min of that yet. I guess it comes down to different strokes for different folks, for me i've been waiting for a decent DBZ game for the past 7 years now! And the Wii's DBZ delivered for me, so right now its just DBZ and wii sports with family and friends. I'm sure i'll play the other two games soon, its just that i really enjoy being Vegeta and whipping everyone's ass in the DBZ universe with him. Can anyone relate to what i'm saying?
- EtherGnat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The Xbox 360 launch games have an average Metacritic score of 77, while the Wii only achieved a 66 on its launch games. I'm not sure the Wii is getting a fair shake from the critics, however. Even the PS3 had a stronger lineup at launch according to the critics. An odd thing happens when you look at user reviews however: for the Xbox and PS3 user reviews are lower than critical reviews; for the Wii this trend is reversed.
Consider this: Wii Sports has basically the same score (75) on Metacritic as NHL 2k6 for the Xbox 360 and Tony Hawk's Project 8 for the PS3. In contrast Wii Sports has received an 8.0 from users, NHL 2K6 a 5.6, and Tony Hawk's Project 8 a 6.6. - jalagl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@drlha:
I just bought the GC version, and will start playing this weekend. The game looks amazing, and I don't really want to spend the cash for a Wii yet... and per your numbers, I guess there's a lot of people like me out there. - EtherGnat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It is an issue. I bought dozens of (mostly discounted) games last year. I bought a Wii for my parents and I'd be surprised if they buy more than one game a year. Attracting non-traditional gamers is great but it'll be a challenge to get them to buy games. Fortunately for Nintendo it's making a profit on the console itself. It may make developers skittish, but Wii games aren't as expensive to develop so I think they'll be in good shape.
- isthisnametaken, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1ok here are some games for you:
MonkeyBall
Rayman (as you mentioned, but it is worth it)
Warioware
Madden 07
and coming soon
Wii Play
Sonic
Tiger Woods 07
Mario Galaxy
plus a whole lot more in the future (The Bigs, SSBB, Metriod, etc) - loof, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I'm pretty sure it's both systems it's on the vgcharts lin up top somewhere about 500000 for each of them.
- DownIsTheNewUp, on 10/12/2007, -7/+7Of course, how can you not buy a great game like Zelda to go with your Wii? Especially when it's the only game worth purchasing.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Just because that's the way it's always been doesn't make it right.
This guy didn't enjoy the game as much as you. He's entitled to his opinion. - SeriouslyButNo, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4'Cuz it's...fun?
Glitch hunting is always nice too. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1The water temple was pretty neat. I'm not saying TP didn't have its occaisional "wow" factor. It's a decent game.
The simple fact, though, is that combat in the recent games, especially bosses, has become far too scripted and lacking. The items are simply used as dungeon plot devices instead of being crafted to make up for Link's weaknesses, like the older games.
I have more fun and challenge any time I fight a pack of Darknuts in Zelda NES than I did fighting anything in TP. The over-animation of all the enemies just simply leads to extreme scripted behavior.
Heck, even the ladder in the first game was fun to use, because it introduced a fun, different, and most importantly, an often-used method of movement.
Remember getting the Magic wand for the first time in the first game? Now you have an item to hit things from afar, even if you don't have full health! Awesome! Too bad it doesn't work on the Darknuts. You can use the bow, but you have to hit them from the right angle, and the bow costs hard-earned rupees to use. So, what do you do? Get in close and risk getting hurt, or take the safe route?
Finding heart containers in the original was awesome because you actually needed them. I had no desire to go hunting in TP because the game was already so easy that I didn't need more health.
The bottom line is that the first game was crafted to be diffcult, unpredictable, and adventurous. The items were the core of the game's charm, not Link and Zelda. The emphasis has switched too much to the story, which to be honest, Zelda never really had anyway. It has charm, but it wears off, and what you're left with is a game where you beat the dungeons just to be beating them. - terribly1, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Regarding attach rates, 86% of people who bought a Wii bought Zelda: Twilight Princess.
This is "holiday" numbers, so I don't know if it's gone up or down since then, but it's still a substantial number of games going out the door.
http://www.totallywii.com/gameinfo.php?gameid=22&details=news&newsid=31 - Paroparo, on 10/12/2007, -10/+9I just realised that the most sold game on the Wii (Wii Sports) has sold more than the most sold game on the Xbox 360 (Gears of War), and the second most sold on the Wii (Twilight Princess) has sold more than the second most sold on the Xbox 360 (Call of Duty 2).
That's if you believe www.vgcharts.com and don't mind that Wii Sports comes bundled of course, but sounds pretty impressive regardless. Looks like no PS3 game has hit 1 million yet, but considering there are less than 2 million in the hands of customers that would've been some kind of attachment rate record. =P - ChewyBass, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I bought a copy, now I regret that decision, it was an impulse purchase.
