- generalleoff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Seiken Densetsu was released as Final Fantasy Adventure on the Game Boy. I think it was released as Mystic Quest in Europe. Seiken Densetsu was remade on the GBA and released in the west as Sword of Mana. Seiken Densetsu 2 was released as Secret of Mana. Seiken Densetsu 3 was never released outside Japan.
Final Fantasy Mystic Quest was a US made game and it was released in PAL regions as Mystic Quest Legend and is known in Japan as Final Fantasy USA even though the title screen says Mystic Quest still.
Japans TV standard is NTSC. They use a slightly different variant though that mostly effects the color red and black. It's just a broadcast difference though and does not really change the spec. The signal is still compatible with US and Canadian sets and the colors will be darker for us. Japanese NTSC is commonly referred to as NTSC/J and all other NTSC signals as NTSC/M.
This Zelda cart is most lily a fake. Proly done by the same Chinese pirates that ported Super Mario World and Mario Kart to the NES years ago. - avg_bear, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3a mid-development cartridge in english? I doubt it.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4This is so blatantly a fake. Sorry if I'm trolling, but why is it in english if it's a prototype? Why's the screen so blurry? Why aren't there more gameplay shots? etc, etc.
No digg for me thanks. - adml_shake, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4^^ because you haven't heard of it, it can't be true?
- Jarrod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The comment below from the Joystiq article brings up a fantastic point. The guy's got 198 Nintendo games and no desire originally whatsoever to just try and see if the cartridge worked?-
"This person has no credibility. He originally said that he didn't test the cart because he didn't have an NES, and didn't have time to find one because he was a "very busy man." If you click on the "my games" link on his page, you find out that he owns a mind boggling number of games from numerous systems, including NES. He was obviously lying about not having time for playing around with games, and lying about not having an NES. So why should we believe him about the cart."
http://spaces.msn.com/members/vav00m/ - Neotribal, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Don't mean to spam, but here's a bit more info on the whole matter: http://www.ratedo.com/articles/z3proto.html
- AdamCo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It looks like a marketing ploy to me, I think Nintendo gave the game to the flea market for someone to stumble upon and cause all this talk and then BAM! Zelda III for NES hits the shelves and NES sales skyrocket, bypassing xbox 360. That's just my opinion though.
- vannoy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I should dig up some of the old beta carts that I have (I used to review games for a magazine) I got a ton of NES/SNES/Genesis ones tucked away in storage...
But honestly all of the beta NES carts that I remember getting had an open area on them where ROM chips could be pulled out and put back in. A few of them also had dipswitches on the top to change settings and whatnot... - torindkflt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The beta of Sonic 2 turned out to be real, that was a big day in the emulation world.
This, on the other hand, is utter garbage. An obvious fake. - LioConvoy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's possible that the game was developed in America. Like that god awful Final Fantasy Mystic Quest.
- TK99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah it's bogus since even if it was ported for Nintendo America, their beta/development cart.'s were not the same as retail ones.
So unless a Nintendo America rep. would come forth and say that he ripped a beta to a retail cart. then there will always be doubt. - LABOMBA, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2THIS AM FAKE TOTAL
- danmanx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Fake. I've been involved with emulation since 1995 in PCs and this is the first time I've heard of this Zelda III. People, it's just not true.
- urbn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Like a few other people have posted.
"a mid-development cartridge in English? I doubt it."
This was the first thing that came to my mind. Why would a Japanese company release a pre beta game in English? From what I remember most of the games developed were not developed in English speaking countries (read Japan and other parts of Asia).
Also why would they release a version that would not only work in American Nintendo consoles, but also support NTSC?
This really sounds like FUD, but hey, stranger things have happened. - Culex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"It's possible that the game was developed in America. Like that god awful Final Fantasy Mystic Quest."
Mystic Quest was developed and released as "Seiken Densetsu" in Japan, or the game that came before our SNES version of "Secret of Mana". That's pretty much why people hated it. It was given an FF name, though it wasn't an FF game.
Oh, and digg on this. Just because I didn't know about Zelda 3. - ardbeg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think Dan Rather and Mary Mapes should do a story on this, ASAP, for 60 Minutes III (beta).
Hundreds of reasons to realize this is a fake/scam, most covered elsewhere. Not mentioned: it's absurd to think he would have originally put the cart up for sale without testing it BUT provide a "trade for other items" guarantee. Why not just a refund? Well, because his mint copy of Mike Tyson's Punchout is worth $800, of course, and so on, if you can find him at all. For that matter, why would someone guarantee what they don't know for sure? If you found a nice-looking watch in the street, would you sell it on ebay? Maybe. But would you "guarantee" it was a real Rolex without taking it to a jeweler? Of course not.
The too-good-to-be-true guarantee is the constant partner of the too-good-to-be-true deal. "Only $10000 for a 2003 BMW but you haven't test driven it? I wasn't born yesterday, buddy. What, you promise to have a mechanic friend fix it if it doesn't run perfectly? Sold!" - aran86, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Zediker
japanese is ntsc(j)
it's just slightly different from ntsc - LioConvoy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There seems to be an influx of suspicious items like this showing up lately. Wasn't it an xbox 360 yesterday?
- phishyJon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0holy *****! this is huge! thats the holy grail of NES game finds! a never-before-released version of zelda 3? all i can say is WOW!!!
- manbeast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0interesting. i hope it is legit and not a homebrew. dugg.
- idigporn.com, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wow, just wow... I do hope for the ROM soon.
- PacoDG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yes, if real, the guy should rip it to a ROM and then sell that game off, ... then release the rom.
- larrabee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Still looks/sounds really cool. Just WHAT IF??
- jpie05, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'd love to play a ROM of it even though I'm sure it's zero fun to play. Do you think it was the early stages of LttP for the SNES?
- Neotribal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I seriously hope whoever ends up with this cartridge dumps the ROM for it, so that the community can check it out. (If it's real, that is.)
- nesstheking1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i cant find it on ebay, was it Pulled?
- microsoftpwner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This game is worth alot or something. I have like 8 of those just siting in my closet :)
- blhack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0what on earth are all of these pictures taken with...a camera phone!?
I gonna go with fake just beause usually people trying to pass one thing off as another take reallly really crappy photos to hide details tha tmight give them away. - rohcky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yea like nate007, who cares, I'd rather play Madden 3016 where I can stop tacklers with my jock strap and various other mindless games!
- Denjira, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The guy's a fellow canadian.. BUY HIS CARTRIDGE!
- Philbert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This reminds me a lot of the old Atari 2600 system. There were a LOT of homebrewers that made really crappy games for that and they all had labels like the one pictured here. I'm wondering if this might be case here.
- hooges, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think the ebay auction got pulled, I can't find it.
- l6900, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0while doubtful, namco brings up a good point about japanese games using lots of english titles...
- Dan™, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I like how Dragon.Feces submitted the info...
- Griffen37, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0nate & goat - some people actually do care, and more importantly, some people don't realize there are risks to these actions. As I blatantly admitted, I want the rom, but I wouldn't want Digg users to encourage someone to put themselves at risk without that person having all the info needed to weigh the risks involved.
- Namco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ebay auction was indeed pulled by Ebay, not because it's fake, but because of copyright paranoia. Japan uses NTSC just like the US. Okibi on Rated O confirms it as real and also posted a pic of another Zelda III prototype with a paper label in a standard shell that he owns that doesn't work anymore. Also, you don't know that the game isn't in Japanese just by looking at the logo screen since many titles of Japanese games are written with Romaji characters (roman letters). It is believed by many in Japan that media and clotting featuring English or romanji words have greater worth.
I wish some people would put some thought into their stupid posts instead of jumping to conclusions. I for one have read everything on ratedo.com, joystiq, ebay, and vav00m's space and I say you can't say fake on this one. You can't say it's real yet, but there's a good deep story there and a good, plausible explanation. - SystemRocks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Man i say nuthing beats the first Zelda Ive try every other one except for the new one that just came out how long ago and i say there not that great.
- Culex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Final Fantasy Mystic Quest was a US made game and it was released in PAL regions as Mystic Quest Legend and is known in Japan as Final Fantasy USA even though the title screen says Mystic Quest still."
Ah, okay. I was still thinking Europe, for some reason. - madmaz186, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I need more info before taking any sides.
But i still think the whole idea of zelda 3 on NES is amazing. - Jasoco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Horribly designed website. HORRIBLE. It needs to die.
And what a horribly conceived scam. He missed (Or whoever made it) the obvious stuff that would make it more realistic. Bah. Get my hopes up.
At least the SimCity NES prototype was real. This one was not. - TK99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0With any luck the guy who is going to buy it (called Knight7) is a Nintendo rep. and well confirm its a fake and beat the guy within an inch of his life with a Nintendo power glove.
- zediker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0if you read... its the NTSC version (US version) it would be in english. PAL is for Europe... i think JSNC is japan?
- Neotribal, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Agreed. That's my only concern, that it may be homebrew. =
- SkeletaLlama, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0neotribal, posting links related to the topic isn't spam, and don't apologize, it shows you're weak and the rabid dogs that troll the comment boards will evicerate you without hesitation (well, I made that last bit up). Also, if this is say an Alpha or a Beta version of the game, what would be the point in releasing it as a ROM if it is so buggy other than to possibly prove its authenticity? I was hoping it was a finished game that wasn't released for marketing reasons or some bad decision by Nintendo. I hardly care about never released games, games get shelved all the time. The only exciting thing about this is that he supposedly found it for sale. That's a mystery. How did the seller get a hold of the game?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0FAKE, just wait and see........
- Vill4no, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Its a fake look at this pic from a previous post on joystiq
http://joystiq.com/entry/1234000980064358/
Also why is it in english? If its unreleased shouldn't it be in japanese? - Griffen37, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Obviously, like the rest of you, I would love to get my hands on the ROM, but marketed or not, Nintendo owns the Copyright and Trademarks involved here. Especially now that he has gone public with his ownership of the copy, any such ripping is highly likely to get him sued. There is no good fair use argument here, especially in the US. Additionally, as the game was never released, it was likely stolen and/or misappropriated originally, so there is a danger there unless his flea market purchase can be verified.
- TytotheG, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0LIAR!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0griffen37 who cares its ***** awesome.
