- lukemorris, on 08/19/2008, -0/+24Let's just hope they don't follow the people whining about D3. It looks good even though it's different.
- Navicerts, on 08/19/2008, -1/+24I think the aggregate outcome of listening to thousands of people when developing a game is going to turn out the same kind of games again and again. It's kind of like mixing paints; you end up with ***** brown every time if you just toss them all in.
Add to that the tendency of game developers to copy cat whatever is popular and it's a recipe for disaster. This can be seen in newly released and upcoming MMORPG's that are turning into "WoW clones" (Warhammer, AoC).
I have an idea of what I would like to see in a game and I often see a sub-set of people that are right on board with my desires but "we" are not in the majority at the moment so the industry will keep pumping out clones. When a game company finally does something diffrent and good to please the sub-set of players that want something *new* they will profit accordingly.
Don't get me wrong, games have come a long way but recently it's just a technological advance instead of a "play style" advance. There are a few companies that break the mold such as Nintendo, Blizzard, and Bunjie who seem to be cutting the path then there are companies like EA games that destroy good games and pump out a seemingly endless amounts of crap. The only option for the fan base is to wait patiently, enjoy the games that are coming out (or don't play them) and keep an eye out for quality titles. - roxya, on 08/19/2008, -1/+21I wish Sega would listen to the fans when making Sonic games.
- benroy, on 08/19/2008, -1/+13If I had any direct influence on game developers, I'd strap them to a chair (clockwork orange-style) and make them play their own broken games. Starting with the 1.001 version of S.T.A.L.K.E.R - Shadow of Chernobyl.
- Navicerts, on 08/19/2008, -1/+10I have faith in Blizzard, they have always developed quality games. I hope thier success with WoW does not change them.
- AlexBizzar, on 08/19/2008, -2/+10I think the hardest part is sorting through all the crap ideas that people give :)
There was a fan-feedback forum on the xboxliveaddicts site about moto gp... and they DID listen within reason. Part of it is also having to mess with the physics engine, and that is usually something developers don't take lightly.
To conclude: lol
It's just sorting through all the unrealistic crap and trying to couple that with demographics that makes everything really tough.
That's what I think, anyways :) But it is good to see that more and more developers are starting to listen, yet very saddening to see the others who are listening less and less to the audience that buys their game(s). - zadadka, on 08/19/2008, -0/+7"....and if you shoot a woman, can her ample boobies pop out of her shirt in slo-mo before she falls down ?"
- Shaflugi, on 08/19/2008, -1/+8Oh, they do. They just listen to the idiot fans that love Shadow and buggy physics.
- jayvisaria, on 08/19/2008, -0/+6You need Firefox + Adblock Plus my friend. Its like washing off all the graffiti off all the walls of the web
- FredFredrickson, on 08/19/2008, -0/+5All they have to do is make it 2D again, and it'll be much better from the get go.
- craighoxton, on 08/19/2008, -0/+4The Industry is in its own world and then so are the Fans. I think the mentality is "If you code it; they will buy" driven by Hollywood-style management ideas ("It's like KOTOR meets GTA") which is natural as Video Games take the place of Movies as mass entertainment. If the demographic of Fans is getting older (into the 30's) then where are the games to cater to this segment?
- scabbers, on 08/19/2008, -0/+4"The Homer" comes to mind.
- DrZaiusDrZaius, on 08/19/2008, -0/+4I think we all remember PA's interpretation of fan feedback, and it's results.
http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2002/10/18/ - FredFredrickson, on 08/19/2008, -0/+4When a game is released (and under what conditions) isn't always the developer's fault. More often than not, it's the publisher sticking strictly to schedule and forcing the release to stay on budget that messes things up for everyone.
- ByteGuerilla, on 08/19/2008, -0/+3The problem is that moderators can't make that decision without their own bias entering the equation. We have a problem in EVE-Online at the moment (well, some consider it a problem, others don't) that the devs keep pandering to the whines of those who think EVE would be better if it was WoW in space - less griefing, less non-consensual combat, less having to think to play the game. The problem is age-old: vocal minorities. 300 posts in a whine thread about suicide ganks does not mean the populace of EVE want suicide ganking nerfed into oblivion. It means those who contributed to the whine want it nerfed, and even then not necessarily into oblivion.
You can't sort through the crap without having to decide what is crap. If I was a moderator, I would be naturally biased against ideas that make my game of choice less like I want it to be. - craighoxton, on 08/19/2008, -0/+3Or maybe try to make the kind if game that you want to see yourself - or at least develop a concept that you could pitch to developers.
- Equinox1, on 08/19/2008, -1/+4Your comments are consistently stupid.
- inactive, on 08/19/2008, -0/+3Rockstar anybody?
I swear they have a team of people reading forums and message boards looking for what people want in the next GTA - sablowsky, on 08/19/2008, -0/+2If the large majority of fans are all trying to influence something in the gane, chances are it should be influenced i think. But you can't always listen to the minorites and "compromise.
Otherwise you get a hodge-podge of half-finished and half-assed ideas that don't blend well, and will bring the game down. - ligyron, on 08/19/2008, -0/+2Customers have a big influence on Blizzard games. There was a big suggestions thread on the Diablo II forums a few years back, covering all the improvements and changes people would like to see in Diablo II. Turns out that thread was sent directly to the Diablo III development team at the time
- inactive, on 08/19/2008, -0/+2Dawn of War 2
- dQuarters, on 08/19/2008, -0/+2That's a great point. And one thing they should stop listening to fans about ... timing. Too much complaining about delayed games these days. More time invariably means more effort. It's never a bad thing. Unless your name is Duke. Then you're pretty much screwed either way.
- otros, on 08/19/2008, -0/+2You're crazy. All the games you listed (with the obvious exceptions) I have been playing for the last ten years -I'm 23. OK, maybe not bioshock, crysis and mass effect, but are they really have a target that much different than quake, doom and kotor?
- MrGiblets, on 08/19/2008, -0/+2Listening to everyone is just as bad as listening to no one. It takes a balance. More importantly, it's a matter of WHAT to listen to. Developers need to have a solid idea of what their product is, who it's for, etc. so they don't put things in that don't belong or make horrible changes to existing elements.
The other thing is that developers need to educate their player base. Many times they ask for feedback and get tons of it, but they discard most or all of it because the players don't know why they have bad ideas. There needs to be some feedback on the feedback. The community will also educate itself and help come up with more constructive ideas. - frepnog, on 08/19/2008, -1/+2speaking of PA, i hope they dont actually do 30 comics of ***** Bogey Golf.
It is ***** weak. - GodsTwin, on 08/19/2008, -0/+1MMORPG industry is the worst (specifically the Free MMORPG industry). They just copy the same Korean MMORPG "madlibs outline" that everyone's been following for years. It's essentially the same grindy piece of ***** repackaged (well I guess you cant really repackage a free MMORPG) just with slightly altered graphics. They all boast about how they have an innovative combat or pet system but in the end its all just point and click.
P.S. FIGHTING CHICKENS FOR 3 HOURS IS NOT FUN. The guy who came up with this idea should be strangled with a coat hanger. - Shaflugi, on 08/22/2008, -0/+1And that worked out SO well! Wind Waker kicks TP's ass in every way (save for the sailing).
- Wargasmic, on 08/21/2008, -0/+1They've already said they aren't changing their art direction. Don't worry they won't change.
- LocalDocal, on 08/19/2008, -0/+1Where are the games that cater to the adult gamers? Are you kidding? The majority of games cater to this segment. Look at some of the most popular games out there: GTA, Gran Turismo, Bioshock, Halo, Mass Effect, Call of Duty, Spore, Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy, Crysis, and so on and so on.
There are more than plenty of developers developing for the older market and they've been doing so for a long, long time. If you're expecting companies like Nintendo to start churning out M-rated Zeldas/Marios, then of course, you'll be waiting for nothing. On the other hand, if you want to play a game developed for your taste, then there is a bountiful amount out there. - inactive, on 08/19/2008, -0/+1They don't get too much fan feedback: they give too much importance to the complaints of complete idiots.
It's like TV censorship. The FCC acts on the complaints of a few thousand individuals when millions had no problem with anything. They act like the complaints they get represent the average TV watcher. When in reality, the only people dumb enough to write a complaint about a ***** bad word are complete idiots who think Jesus watches them masturbate.
Games are now custom made for the complete incompetent. They completely ruined the online gameplay we'd get with games like Rogue Spear, Counter-Strike, etc. Everything is easy and everybody's equal.
Best example of this is BF1942 for the pc a few years back. They had a good game, a great game even. Then people complained, and EA released a bunch of patches that completely ruined the game by making the aiming suck, the flying ridiculously easy, etc. - Navicerts, on 08/19/2008, -0/+1Yea, that's an option I guess but I'll leave t to those people that can more clearly express their opinion; I suck at it.
- Navicerts, on 08/20/2008, -0/+1Upcoming..... You haven't even played any of those games yet and you claim they are some sort of proof that Ea produces good games... Yet you say my claims are unjustified. Wow. The Sims? lol.
My own hate for them comes from buying out and destroying the UO franchise, the C&C franchise, and the Battlefield franchise. They don't do original things, if you followed the game industry instead of reading billboards and thinking you know whats going on you might now that. EA buys out anyone with an original successful idea and then changes the good game to please a wider audience (generally means dumbing it down). - MrGiblets, on 08/19/2008, -0/+1Great example of "listening too much." :)
- DeadHerring, on 08/22/2008, -0/+1I'll second that
- dandonia, on 09/14/2008, -0/+1If you followed the game industry you might realise that EA's Sports range is second to none. Fight Night is one of the few 360 launch titles still worth playing. The Sims is one of the biggest selling franchises of all time and you might relise that EA are simply rewarding tallent and helping to get their games to area's they wouldn't have been able to. Also I have played SPore, Sims, Rock Band, Facebreaker and Crysis. The other two are clearly new IP's and that was the issue.
Would you have them publish IP's nobody wants or cares about? Also the games you mention that they ruined. When were they released? EA has made massive leaps over the last few years and seem to be trying new things on more regular basis.
They publish 150 games per year, they wouldn't be able to that if all their games sucked. It is only because people buiy them that they can grow - whatthefu, on 08/19/2008, -0/+1I think we all have seen examples of fan feedback providing some of the dumbest ideas ever.
- krustie, on 08/19/2008, -0/+1Sorting the unrealistic crap isn't troublesome, I'm sure a moderator around the community wouldn't mind doing it for free, then all he or she has to do is send the list off to the game developers. :)
Easy peasy lemon squeezy - shagg187, on 08/19/2008, -0/+1Well... Denis Dyack got banned from NeoGAF so i guess he lost the bet :)
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=33193 ... - caddyalan, on 08/19/2008, -0/+1I recall hearing that fans' complaints about the planned Diablo 3 art style were generally ignored. I thought they were making a mountain of a molehill, but I could be wrong...
- ByteGuerilla, on 08/19/2008, -2/+3Sonic you tit.
- inactive, on 08/19/2008, -0/+1off was reduntant
- Elranzer, on 08/20/2008, -0/+1It may happen. Even the big boys listen to fan feedback sometimes. I'm pretty damn sure Twilight Princess was a direct result to the feedback Nintendo received regarding Wind Waker.
- Firethorne, on 08/19/2008, -0/+1Guild Wars is horrible in this line. They usually just cave in to groups who are complaining the most and end up alienating people who were actually having fun with the game in the first place. The people who had fun leave, the people complaining find something new to complain about, and the cycle repeats itself.
- weasel435, on 08/19/2008, -0/+0There's a lot of problems involved with trying to take in gamer comments and put them into practice with a game. As an independent game developer myself, I'm more than well aware that it's 100% impossible to please everyone. It's compounded by the fact that more than half of people who want to speak out about a game tend to not actually describe what they found to be wrong with it. "IT SUX" isn't really helpful, so already there's a massive amount of feedback that's just trashed off the bat.
I think that there's a very large portion of people who don't understand the development process and simply want something that can't be delivered because it's over the top, contradictory, or just plain a bad idea. Sure, robotic pirate ninja dinosaurs with shark laser fingers would be cool and everything, but it hardly fits into the medieval fantasy RPG that said gamer happens to be reviewing. Feedback is good, but I don't think that everyone is competent enough to give useful feedback, and it just becomes a confusing mess. - dandonia, on 08/20/2008, -2/+2What a ***** article
- 1807, on 08/19/2008, -1/+1"The only option for the fan base is to wait patiently, enjoy the games that are coming out (or don't play them) and keep an eye out for quality titles."
Are you related to John Madden? Either way, thanks captin obvious! - listereo, on 08/20/2008, -0/+0Clearly, you have never been to DeviantArt.com.
Oh, the horror. THE HORROR. -
