- bpapa, on 10/12/2007, -3/+50Just like the original, this one is totally slipping under everybody's radar. The original barely got any hype as it was overshadowed in the gaming media by the release of the Sega Saturn and Sony Playstation. Now 10 years later the sequel is going to be overshadowed in the gaming media by the release of the PS3 and Wii.
- merdiesel, on 10/12/2007, -3/+31As a DS owner, its hard as hell to keep up with all these great releases...
- raz3000, on 10/12/2007, -2/+27This is a surprise. 9.0+ games are rare at GameSpot. I remember playing Yoshi's Island years after it was originally released and was pleasantly surprised by its unique style and art.
- DanteDefiance, on 10/12/2007, -3/+22What the bloody deuce? Gamespot is one of the few reviewers around that rate games appropriately. It's very rare to see a score above 8.5 by GS.
- Bokista, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19Or just pick the reviewers you trust.
- hansamurai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18Touch Fuzzy Get Dizzy
- StephenChow, on 10/12/2007, -4/+19Praised? They practically bended Yoshi over and gave it to him with cute cuddily fluff.
- Davidofff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Well gee...maybe the SNES version will be on VC!
- NewChar, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10The original is probably the greatest 2D platformer ever made.
- Moopy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Too bad it doesn't have watermelon seeds, or the trippy fuzzies. I wonder if it even has fat shyguys.
- Moopy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9It originally came out for snes, and then had a semi-sequel, yoshi's story for N64, that was not as good, and the graphics were like a story-book. Yoshi's story is to yoshi's island as paper mario is to mario rpg.
- snodin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Ive seen alot of annoying people in both those games who do nothing but run and jump around.
- stubadub, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Who is John Galt?
- Sedako, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I disagree NewChar, Super Metroid wins my platformer award. Aww, what the hell, just about any Nintendo made platformer out there is golden.
- Optimus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Isn't democracy grand? Hit the "Bury" button and pick your poison.
- OMightyColumbia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yoshi's island was a spiritual sequel to SMW, and these two games quite possibly MADE the SNES, one in its infancy, and one in its death. So many good games were released for SNES, im glad to see them coming out on the gameboy and DS, and their sequels too.
- jellygraph, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I really liked Yoshi's Island, but the gameplay dynamics weren't quite my thing. I prefer something more akin to SMB3 and SMW. Still, it is a very polished game, no doubt. Really blew away anything on the SNES originally
- Goosemaster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I do believe I will need to 'open a can up on you' tradedemon...
- Ignignokt01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yeah, final fantasy was just released today. CRAP, I really need a job...
- Vankalker, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8I just picked this up today and love it. Just as good as the original and maybe even a little better.
With the New Super Mario Bros. and now this anyone with a DS should be in sidescroller heaven. - Sedako, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Gamespot has it's moments, as well as it's bad ones. Take this review for example:
http://www.gamespot.com/xbox360/action/perfectdarkzero/review.html
EGM has been around for a long time, well before Gamespot graced the internet. - razmig, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3oh most definitely, i mean COME ON NINTENDO! they should get original and start putting out quality hand-held games like Socom 17 or another incredible racing/sport game like they do for the PSP...
.... - hansamurai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Considering the original Yoshi's Island is the best 2D platformer ever made, I'm definitely picking this up.
- DelSolMan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Fanboy stories are a nice break from unpacking my ipodwiizunemoto stories.
- ericeman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1IGN says that the game has nothing new but I figure that if it's anything like the first one I'll be more than happy shelling out the money for this game. The first was one of my favorites for the console and remains one of my favorite games.
- bobbygeorgina, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Direct link to Yoshi's Island 2 review on gamespot.com:
http://www.gamespot.com/ds/action/yoshisisland2/review.html - Sedako, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No, it isn't. Greg Kasavin should also be a clue-in.
- Davidofff, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Yoshi's Island is one of my favourite games of all time. Hell I'm considering buying a DS ... unless it comes out on Wii VC !
- wushu18t, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1the original was great and i still play it today. along with gameplay, the cuteness actually tops it off. that's when i really fell in love with yoshi.
- aschocobo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i've never played SMW2/ Mario Advance 3 until i got it on gba (well, technically, i got it for the ds, since it plays gba games...i've never owned a gba). best platform game i've ever played. nice to see the sequel got great reviews. looks like i'll be picking this one up as well :)
- WhereAmI, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2http://www.gamespot.com/psp/action/daxter/index.html?q=daxter
Daxter also got a 9.1
Thats "superb"
at least get it right, submitter. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+9I always thought Yoshi's Island > SMBW1
- dohidied, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I just picked up a DS yesterday and I'm having a blast with MarioKart and New SMB. I think I might have to pick this up to entertain myself on the hours of plane rides next week.
- grumbel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Absolutely agree, I can't understand why they redid the graphics. The original ones looked much better, especially the animations of Yoshi are just plain awful and miss completly the funny timing of the first part. The backgrounds also look far less impressive.
- grumbel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I havn't played it that much so far, but what I have seen hasn't impressed me at all. For most part it looks like a cheap rip-off of the first game instead of a worthy successor. They have redone all the sprites and replaced them with larger uglier ones, totally unnecessary given that the original was designed for the same screen resolution as the DS has. Instead of impressive three layer paralax scrolling, the game is now limited to two layers, which makes the backgrounds look very flat and ugly. The music is also a lot worse then the original. The double screen is pretty much wasted as well. Its still an ok game, but I can't help but feel that they did a lot of stuff wrong that they already nailed perfectly in the first game.
- Sedako, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Actually, I meant that they had scored PDZ much higher than it had actually deserved. Like it or not, it really wasn't that great of a game.
- jonnyeh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Their Perfect Dark Zero was spot on! I don't remember it exactly, but it was > 9. See Sedako's message below.
- cherilusive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0GamesRadar also gave it a 9 out of 10.
http://www.gamesradar.com/us/ds/game/reviews/article.jsp?articleId=2006111414824912040§ionId=1000&releaseId=20060510151423191000 - SlappyMc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1who is Frank Provo?
- synaesthesia, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I could choose which of my children lived or died easier than choose which of these games is greatest
- grumbel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If you want to know how the game stacks up to the first one, you'd better read this user review instead of trusting that 9.1 score:
http://www.gamerankings.com/itemrankings/launchreview.asp?reviewid=742381
To make long things short, this game is more like flawed recreation of the original then a worthy successor. To little new stuff and much of the old flair is ruined by badly redone graphics, animations and music.
Still a good game, but not even close to the greatness of the original one. - zosobaggins, on 10/12/2007, -6/+6It's an awesome game, but somehow a lot of the little graphical flairs of the SNES version didn't make it...given the power of the systems, I find this pretty odd. At some points the GBA version looks better (in terms of little extras, like standing in water and having it bubble around your feet, it's gone.)
- hansamurai, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Totally agree. Anyone who disagrees has never played Yoshi's Island.
- bokchoi, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4Um, thats great and all but why is this on the front page?
9 is a pretty great score and yes, GameSpot judges pretty well so I guess it deserves the rank, but why post a story like this about it? I'm sorry, but this just seems pretty fanboy to me. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0That's a good one right?
- phisquare, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3DS games on VC, I don't see that happening....
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+4There's only one for each sentence! Not that exciting!
- nikeairj, on 10/12/2007, -7/+4"That's Amazing"
??
I don't see anything amazing about it. 10.0 is probably amazing. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2What's EGM? GameSpot has the best reviews for video games anywhere. I have yet to find a review that I don't agree with and the editors are really down to Earth.
- OMightyColumbia, on 10/12/2007, -14/+5platformer is essentially any game that constitutes running and jumping as its primary mode of gameplay. it is from an era before counter strike and wow.
