- mickhead, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11A sony rep says it was the sixaxis. surprising?
The emmys people say it wasnt.
Hmm. Yes, who to believe...
And why to care... - eSecuris, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7We weren't sure why the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences decided to give Sony's evolutionary SIXAXIS controller a Technology and Engineering Emmy and, evidently, neither were they. After Sony blasted out a press release proudly proclaiming the honor -- and after the internet rubbed its collective eyes raw -- we've learned that Sony wasn't alone in receiving an honor from the Academy. The list of Emmy Award winners for "Peripheral Development and Technological Impact of Video Game Controllers" include Sony Computer Entertainment of America and ... Nintendo! Did Nintendo's innovative Wiimote share the honor with the motion-sensing SIXAXIS? Not quite ... Séamus at Hydrapinion did some legwork and discovered that, while Sony had won an Emmy for Technology and Engineering, it wasn't for the SIXAXIS. Instead, Christine Chin from NATAS confirmed that Sony's Dual Shock as well as Nintendo's D-Pad (NES pad?) won "for the development of the generation of controllers that followed the classic joysticks." Oops! You know what they say happens when you assume ...
http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/09/oops-sony-declares-sixaxis-emmy-emmys-say-uh-uh/ - Gawtie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Thats why this is fishy, everyone reporting this is citing 1 site that most people have never heard of (im assuming since i follow alot of gaming site and never heard of this site), and now the site is down. None of the sites like joystiq and engadget and destructoid actually confirmed this, they all took the story from that Hydrapinion site.
- LordofChaosIori, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6According to previous information Nintendo didn't submit the Wii remote for a nomination or award....
- HsoKinees, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7how Nintendo's Wiimote seemingly got ignored is beyond me :(
- noseeme, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9Pay-per-Emmy.
- misfit410, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Is it the same Sony Rep that said the PS3 freezes up on purpose?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5a SONY rep was contacted...a SONY rep was contacted... Why doest that seem fishy to you...well he is getting paid by SONY...hmm *SONY*
- ronalopolis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I cant see how a controller that is 12 years old and lost a wire and the rumble feature could win this award. Sure they have some tilt sensing but only after Nintendo announced the Wiimote.
- seamus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Yep, the site I contribute to (http://www.hydrapinion.com/) where I broke this news is very new. Understand that makes it a hard one to accept at face value. I have named names as far as NATAS spokespeople go, which I hope backs me a little. I'm also a general technology journalist, not just a blogger, and hold myself to standards of being certain of what I say before jumping in. I have a good relationship with the Australian Sony and Sony Computer Entertainment PRs, so I wouldn't want to jump in without having confidence in what I was saying. I also tried to contact them, but haven't been contacted by them yet (though this all relates to SCEA releases, so they may not have much to offer).
In the morning, I hope to hear more from NATAS in response to Sony's continued confirmation of their original release, which should help settle the arguments. Heck, feel free to ring NATAS yourself! :-) - piper999, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Here is the quote from someone who works for the organization behind the Emmy's. Sony is going to go down hard for this one...
"I understand you had contacted Cheryl Daly, Director of Communications at NATAS to confirm if Sony won for their PS3 controller. This is incorrect, Sony won for their dual shock analog controller. The award is from the Video Game Technology Group. It was nominated by our internal group and considered along with the Nintendo D-Pad both of which were considered Emmy worthy for the development of the generation of controllers that followed the classic joysticks." - mageofdeath, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I trust sony's rep's about as far as I can throw them, which I can't...
- coheedcollapse, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Um, it's not surprising but I'm inclined to believe him. If it was definitely wrong the last thing that Sony PR guys would want to do is continue to reiterate the fact even though everything is about to blow up in their faces.
If anything I think the rep would write an official response quoting that it was a misunderstanding of some sort. Sony might have some bad PR, but they wouldn't back themselves into a corner that badly. - TheDonNMikeShow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This stories author (named DM in his comments section) actually admits he could very well be wrong when questioned by Seamus the writer of the story declaring the Sixaxis did not win...
"Written by seamus on 2007/01/09@ DM
Because this is like a 'lifetime achievement' award, given for the influence on controllers that have come since. The Nintendo part of the award was for the Nintendo D-pad, not the Wiimote. Here is the relevant section of my correspondence with Christine Chin from NATAS that points to the group's reason for giving the awards:"Sony won for their dual shock analog controller. It was nominated by our internal group and considered along with the Nintendo D-Pad both of which were considered Emmy worthy for the development of the generation of controllers that followed the classic joysticks."
Written by DM on 2007/01/09 hmm i see what u mean.. Sony really doesnt need more bad PR and if they are lyign and then confirmed lying, wow just wow"
WHAT A TOOL DM YOU ARE NOT A REPORTER AND YOUR SITE HAS NO CREDIBILITY, THANKS FOR PROVING IT!!!!!! - Phocion55, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Either way..............why am I not surprised that this whole ordeal is a PR *****?
Sony and ***** go hand and hand. - charlescheese, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2@razor, Sony would be insane to lie about this. I know, I know, they ***** up a lot this year, but they aren't THAT stupid that they would lie about an Emmy which could easily be disproved.
- HsoKinees, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1silence, plonk! it's not my fault that everyone is ebaying consoles, and people who actually want to buy them to PLAY them don't get a say in the matter, unless they wanna get fleeced -,-
- Gawtie, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2I think it would be a little more fishy for sony to continually lie about this. The press release said the SIXAXIS won, everyone reported the SIXAXIS won, the PR rep confirms the SIXAXIS won. And on top of that why would a controller that years old just NOW win an emmy?
- plonk420, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0you don't even HAVE a Wii, Hso X)
- RazorElite, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3How the hell is this confirmation?? A Sony rep? Wow... did you really think he'd say something else? This is even less credible than the story claiming it was a lie. I guess some more digging needs to be done.
