- corteb88, on 12/26/2008, -30/+211Too bad the Wii games are *****... my Wii sits unplayed. Haven't played since I got Smash Bros Brawl.
- MrEdwardo, on 12/26/2008, -12/+91Okay so the Wii hardware sales are off the scale... but what about software? or do these people buy no-end of novelty shallow disposable games too?... oh.
- xmzx, on 12/26/2008, -23/+90The Wii is not for the real hardcore gamer. The Wii is simply for casual gaming. I have a lot of people over my house everyday, and no one is really a hardcore gamer. We just have a real fun time with it, and use it daily.
You can call the games *****, the graphics *****, etc. No one cares. It's an amazing console that's amazingly fun! - Jhiaxuz, on 12/27/2008, -8/+65Bottom line: don't be an ***** and tell me what to like or not like based on your personal preference.
You ***** Nazis. - WhereAmI, on 12/27/2008, -5/+45Too bad the 3rd party companies aren't having fun.
- mywhitenoise, on 12/27/2008, -7/+42They do. Why would I parent buy his kid a game like LittleBigPlanet, or Fable when they could buy them Shrek The Third?
- mywhitenoise, on 12/27/2008, -12/+47Name me 3 good games that came out for Wii in 2008. *****, just name me 2.
- BlueSkyfish, on 12/26/2008, -25/+57I have a Wii and love it. Every time an article comes up on Digg that's even remotely positive toward the Wii, you have people making up anecdotal stories about how they only bought one game and never played it, or some outlandish statement about how the amount of shovelware stops the quality games from being good. This seems to be isolated to digg.com too. Most other online sites are more neutral. Hell, even 4chan's /v/ section has less fanboyism.
- DickyT83, on 12/27/2008, -4/+34It's all about the kids.
- worknman, on 12/27/2008, -2/+28I think you guys who are dissing the Wii don't really understand the appeal. For the first time since the Atari 2600, I finally have a console I can play with my parents and non-video game-playing friends. I can hand my dad a Wiimote and he can bowl, do some golfing, play Mario Kart, or whatever. But if I handed him a 360 controller and turned on COD4, I'm sorry, but it just ain't happening.
Don't get me wrong.. I have a 360 and enjoy it very much, but the Wii serves an entirely different purpose. It doesn't even really compete with the 360, nor should it. - thecheatah, on 12/27/2008, -4/+26I really hope they dont. The hardcore gamer's market needs to have some backing too.
- xerus, on 12/27/2008, -6/+28Yeah. They don't know that the only way to have fun with games is to shoot aliens in HD online with 13 year olds screaming ***** at you for 2 hours.
- xerus, on 12/27/2008, -4/+25So you ask a subjective question, get a response, and it's WRONG? No way!
- doshindude, on 12/26/2008, -18/+39the thing is, when we tell these stories, they're true.
Excuse us for being truthful. - xerus, on 12/27/2008, -13/+34Yeah, the hardcore gamer is playing games like Bioshock and Prince of Persia where you can't die, or all those other FPS games that let you just sit down for a second to regenerate your health so you never lose. HARDCORE 4 LIFE.
- benitojuarez, on 12/27/2008, -4/+24ok so is 43 million potential sales enough for developers to actually make good wii games yet?
- NoamChimpsky, on 12/27/2008, -1/+21Nintendo has done very well for itself this generation. Their plan to "expand" the video game market has worked better than even they probably hoped.
But, they were helped significantly when their two biggest competitors stumbling badly out of the gates. Badly.
Microsoft's RRoD caused early shortages which inhibited sales, lack of confidence in hardware which inhibited sales, and a 1 billion dollar write-off that prevented at least one price-cut which inhibited sales. [We've all seen how the 360 sales took off after the last price-cut, imagine if the console sold in this range over the holidays: $150-$175 Arcade, $225-$250 Pro, $300-$325 Elite.]
Sony's trojan horse Bluray player also caused early shortages and an exorbitant price tag that few were willing to swallow. Toss in some of Sony's 2006-07 PR blunders (gamers should "Get a second job" to afford the PS3, etc) and you get an image of an arrogant company telling consumers just what they're going to buy--the new DvD format and like it. [Rightly or wrongly, that's how it APPEARS, don't want to be accused of Sony bashing.]
If Microsoft/Sony had their act togethor, this generation would have been far more competitive. As it stands, Microsoft and Sony have the better consoles and games, but they don't have the price or market appeal of Nintendo.
Nintendo's only real problem this generation is lack of quality 3rd party support:
1. Most multiplatform games will be significantly better on a 360/PS3.
2. Most developers have taken to releasing cheap shovelware on the Wii [Carnival Games anyone?] There's no point sinking millions in production if uninformed parents are snapping up Petz and Bratz titles by the boatload. This is where the "market expansion" has hurt Nintendo because the flood of new/casual gamers are often buying games like toys rather than for their content. [I am a huge board game fan and nothing is more frustrating than seeing the 1,000th version of Monopoly sell better than this year's best from Fantasy Flight Games/Days of Wonder/Rio Grande, but that's how the public buys--why else do we always get ***** liscenced games?]
Nintendo is releasing great games as a first party publisher. I loved Mario/Zelda/Metroid/Mario Kart/Fire Emblem, but now that I've beaten them, my Wii sits untouched waiting for another Nintendo title to interest me enough for a purchase. Sadly, while the Wii had absolutely NOTHING new worth buying this Christmas [Animal Crossing OH BOY!!!], more than a dozen games came out for 360/PS3 that I have/want [Left 4 Dead, Fable II, Prince of Persia, Fallout 3, Dead Space, Littlebigplanet, etc.]
So, all the credit in the world to Nintendo--their Wii is doing great and they have some quality 1st party titles, but when I'm done with the new Mario/Zelda, I play most games on the other consoles because the 3rd party support is staggeringly better on them. - EtherGnat, on 12/27/2008, -1/+21The Gamecube was the cheapest console last generation, but that didn't make it a mega seller. Believe it or not people actually like the Wii. Yes, the universe is larger than your hardcore gamer buddies and Digg.
- hydr, on 12/26/2008, -15/+33If you are a hardcore gamer you go xbox360 or PS3, if you are a parent you buy a Wii with Super Mario. The majority are still parents buying consoles for their kids. Both Sony and Microsoft can learn a thing or two from Nintendo, it´s not always about the hardcore stuff.
- Ajajadude, on 12/27/2008, -4/+22I'm not sure a game that's on all 3 platforms counts.
- seraph741, on 12/27/2008, -5/+22i would have to argue that it does not compete for the same dollars that 360/PS3 are competing for. The Wii is getting lots of sales from people who would never even consider purchasing a console. So yes, it is a competitor, but the reason Sony or Microsoft aren't worried is because Nintendo probably only generates a much smaller portion of its revenue from the typical gaming group (that Sony and Microsoft are after).
So you can't say it is directly competing, if you think so, your not a gamer.
And Wii has its place, as a party system, but if your a real console gamer, you need one of the other systems.
For whoever mentioned the PC, I don't think you understand the appeal of console gaming. You get a high powered machine for relatively cheap, don't have to upgrade for 5+ years, everything works on it, easily hooked up to HDTV for high res gaming, easy to play multiplayer on same console, can play easily from couch, etc, etc. I doubt you would have any of those fancy PC games if it wasn't for consoles and their ability to generate insane revenue.
In conclusion (lol), everything has its place, and you have to be pretty ignorant to think otherwise. - inactive, on 12/27/2008, -6/+22Mcdonalds sells the most "hamburgers" too.
market share does not mean quality. usually quite the opposite. look almost any segment of any market from music to beer. you will find the top seller is crap. - barc0001, on 12/27/2008, -4/+19I don't really get this attitude. People say that the only good games for the Wii are from Nintendo, and that's somehow Nintendo's fault? Did Nintendo put out a clause in the SDK that said "your games have to suck to be approved" or something? No. So if the games suck, isn't that the 3rd parties' fault? Game companies are laying people off, maybe if they decided to focus real resources on the Wii (which has almost 50% of the bloody market) they wouldn't be laying off people?
- postal21, on 12/27/2008, -2/+16FACT: my roommate's mom bought her a wii for christmas...
but her mom is keeping it at her house to try to lure my roommate into spending time at her house... lol.
FACT: its not going to work. - dnasty27, on 12/27/2008, -8/+22Part of the reason the Wii is such a success is because it isn't just bought for the video game factor. There are people who buy it specifically for Wii fit and they think it will provide a workout. Places like nursing homes buy the console for physical therapy for older people who just need to move. So ya, it's a competitor, but to say it's in the same exact group as the 360 and ps3 is just ignorant.
/have owned both a Wii and 360, sold the Wii - legom7, on 12/27/2008, -0/+13no more heroes and bomberman blast. There, that's two.
- DarkStar3333, on 12/27/2008, -4/+17No. Unless its a first party Nintendo game, most of them are simply ignored by 80% of the install base. Most of those owners are fine with owning just Wii sports which makes it the most expensive gaming device on the market.
Take a game like no more heroes, check the sales figures and you have your answer why most developers dont even bother trying. In order for a developer to make money on the Wii, it has to be made by nintendo or slapped together in a month or two in order to sell to people who dont know any better.
Why even bother developing games for 2% of a 40M user base when you can develop for an install base where 25% of (20M+) user base will buy your game. Investing money into a new IP on the Wii is simply too risky.
Nintendo is in no possition to care, its easy to sit back and selling consoles and *accessories* despite the system having no real depth or longevity of ownership. - magneteye, on 12/27/2008, -8/+21OK, I will name more than 2 good games that came out in 2008 on Wii:
No More Heroes
World of Goo
Okami
Lego Indiana Jones
Call of Duty: World at War
Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2009
Rock Band
Shaun White Snowboarding: Road Trip - inactive, on 12/27/2008, -5/+17and the uninformed adults.
- MrRedneck, on 12/27/2008, -2/+14Not.. really..
In Prince of Persia.. would you really prefer that when you die you simply get a menu? It kind of destroys the immersion, wouldn't you say? Elika is an idea that adds a lot to the game. You know you ***** up, so she rescues you.
How is that any different then a menu that asks if you want to try again? I will agree that FPS games have gotten to be an exercise in futility. Give me back my Goldeneye. - EtherGnat, on 12/27/2008, -1/+12Hardcore gamers have gotten really paranoid over the past few years. The success of the Wii doesn't mean people are going to stop paying attention to the hardcore market. That's like saying just because the Ford Focus outsells a Porche 911 people are going to stop making sportscars.
Hardcore gamers are, and will always be, an extremely valuable market. It's not an either/or proposition; there is lots of money to be made from hardcore gamers, and there will always be developers that want that money. If anything the casual gaming market is only going to grow the hardcore gaming market, because many people will move on to more sophisticated games. - ScottishMcDuff, on 12/27/2008, -0/+11Rainbow Road is ridiculous this time! Did they just make that course to piss players off or what?
- Renton, on 12/27/2008, -12/+23I own a Wii, and gaming quality PC. My roommate has a 360 that I play sometimes (but with only a couple of games because he's a cheap bastard). Never played a PS3, nobody I knows has one. I still prefer the Wii. The PC gets second place with Team Fortress 2.
Mywhitenoise, your experience might differ since you're one of Digg's biggest PS3 fanboys, so I always take anything you say with a grain of salt anyway. - inactive, on 12/27/2008, -0/+10I think most people are buying it like crazy this year for the back-catalog of old Nintendo games and Wiifit. I would like to think the public isn't being tricked into buying them or my faith in humanity is sunk, lol.
- xerus, on 12/27/2008, -2/+12Uneducated? Unsophisticated? Can we please drop this elitist attitude about GAMING? For chrisssake it's not like you're playing your xbox with your pinky extended sipping tea whenever you blow someone's head off.
...or is it? - feliks2, on 12/27/2008, -3/+13Thankyou xerus. I'm sitting here laughing (out loud (quietly)) at your comment
- wilhoitm, on 12/27/2008, -0/+9The Wii is successful for the same reason that Apple Computers and IPods or IPhones are successful. It has got the people who really don't care about computers, mobile phones, or games to be interested in it. My mom who is in her 60s asked for and got a Wii and Wii Fit for X-mas, there is know what PS2 or X-box can compete with that!
- rumorsofdemise, on 12/27/2008, -5/+14godwin's law.
- latova, on 12/27/2008, -0/+9I still have no idea what it is with people and the word "hardcore". If you're hardcore that usually means you do things that normal gamers usually don't do, like you've beaten every possible difficulty, unlocked every possible unlockable, got every achievement, play for half the day and probably don't get out very often. Therefore I doubt being a hardcore gamer is anything to brag about.
Owning a 360 and playing it for a few hours a day doesn't make you hardcore gamer. It makes you just a gamer. - Kunohara, on 12/27/2008, -13/+22The Wii is the most successful console that no one is playing. Think about it.
- latova, on 12/27/2008, -1/+9He's not countering anything, he just thinks everything everyone says is *****. He's right.
- Vektuz, on 12/27/2008, -7/+15I don't understand why this is happening. Oh, wait, I do.
Most people who own a Wii bought it because it was a hot item and they thought they'd have a ton of fun, now its gathering dust.
I'm guessing that same trend continues. - lordmike, on 12/27/2008, -2/+10Well, I guess I'm not a gamer 'cos I love playing with my Wii (man, that sounds dirty!)... And now that developers are starting to port "real" games over to the system, like Call of Duty--World at War (which is AWESOME!)) you can now have everything in one: "real" gaming AND alternative gaming in one console. My wife can play with Wii Ski and Wii Fit... My kid can bowl... I can play sports games and the new "real" games coming out. In addition, I can play light saber games like Clone Wars and whole other genres of games that just don't work on the other consoles. I mean, if you're into snowboarding, the 360 isn't going to give you the same experience as the Wii with a balance board will... If I want to pass some time, I can play some casual games... if I want to do some real gaming, now I have that option... if I want to do something different like play light sabres, I have that option, too.... The Wii is the most versatile unit out there... sorry that so many of you folks don't appreciate that...
- ThisIsDoughty, on 12/27/2008, -1/+9One of the things that this author seems to have forgotten is the fact that almost no one chooses a Wii OVER a 360 or PS3. Most people I know, mostly college-age kids, either have a 360 or a PS3 and them some of them also have a Wii. In contrast my 10 year old sister has only a Wii AND my Grandmother has one of her own. The hardware sales are higher because the target audience for the Wii is somewhere from age 8 to age 90+. With such a larger set of potential customers it would be disappointing if the Wii's hardware sales weren't dominating.
- iEATcatFOOD, on 12/27/2008, -2/+10QFT!
- bearcat8543, on 12/27/2008, -0/+8im a "hardcore" gamer and i love my wii. i do all my "hardcore" gaming on the PC which is a much better experience than the xbox/ps3. the thing is, none of the games i play on the wii are available on anything else, and theyre ***** awesome. i think youre just a bit jealous.
- Shaflugi, on 12/27/2008, -0/+8Hmm..... don't care!
Sure, I only have two games on my Wii that I play, but I ***** play them to death, and I have a lot of fun. Isn't that all that matters? - BodomChild16, on 12/27/2008, -3/+10dugg for Nazis.
- Jhiaxuz, on 12/27/2008, -1/+81945 called, they need more troops at the Reichstag.
- trem0lo, on 12/27/2008, -0/+7The Wii has a broader fan base that includes women and children. It appeals to families and encourages them to spend time together. In a crappy economy more families are spending time at home and they need cheap entertainment. Marketing and a crumbling economy. There are your answers.
