- diskopo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15This is very cool. I can't wait. Booting to the dashboard, background downloads and self-portrait avatars are killer.
- Morphine7399, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Umm, Maybe if you actually did some research into some of the games coming out for the 360 you would realize that there is actually a wide range of amazing titles, such as Mass Effect, Enchant Arms, N3, PSU, Lost Odyssey... and those are just the RPG style games. When on the other hand, I have only heard of one RPG style game that I am interested in for the Wii, which is Fire Emblem. And at least the 360 has some FPSs, the only one that will be launched for the Wii is Red Steel, which doesn't even offer multiplayer online or off. (I do not consider Metroid a FPS after their auto targeting system used in the last two games which helped make the game more appropriate for their target audiences.(children))
Unlike Nintendo they are venturing into new franchises and not just releasing the 6th+ installment of a game of certain games (zedla, mario, metroid, etc). Everyone is excited about the Wii now but I doubt it will have nearly as nice of an interface as the 360 does currently and after this update. Not to mention the lack of mature (not rating) titles. After the first wave of there new series like Zelda, Mario, and Metroid come out I see it being very similar to the gamecube, everyone just waits around for the next game to come out in those series. - inajeep, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Hours on a puzzle game. Bejewled count?
- bmaltais, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Sorry but the market place has a ton of non shooter games, like UNO, Marble Blast, etc.
You do not have to subscribe to Gold membership to benefit from the upgrade by the way. - j0se, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Here's a rundown of the new features that the upgrade will include:
Xbox Live Marketplace
The Xbox Live Marketplace blade is getting a make-over making it easier to sort through the increasingly bloated offerings that can be found through Live.
The rework will include the addition of a New Media and Entertainment menu with the following categories:
New Releases
All Media and Entertainment
Movie Trailers and Short Films
Television, Music, Sports and More
Gaming Community Videos
Game Tips and Support Videos
Optional iPod Support.
You might have noticed that "Television, Music, Sports and More" category. Yeah, it caught my eye too. Here's what it means: Unfortunately, it doesn't mean full length prime time shows. Instead they are focusing on short form shows. Like maybe previews of next week's show or the Gears of War special. Music videos will also be here.
"We are continuing to develop exclusive content," Greenberg said, when I pressed him on the issue of the chance that prime time tv or other episodic content might be sold through Live. "Anything is possible, we have the platform for it and the partners in place."
Gaming community also has some amazing possibility, but so far it looks it will be free of your buddy playing DDR. Instead expect to see things like episodes of Red Vs. Blue and tons of machinima stuff. Greenberg added that they hope to one day allow users to upload their own original content in some way.
Another Marketplace addition is the Games option. In that category you'll find newly released downloads, Xbox Live Arcade, demos, trailers and videos for games, played games and the ability to sort through your game downloads by genre.
In general, the Marketplace is getting a lot deeper with a lot more ways to sort and find content, something that certainly comes as a reaction to the explosion of interest to the service.
Background Download Manager
Active Download will allow you to download games in the background as you do other stuff. Yes that means you can play retail games, or any other "full Xbox experience" during a download. The download manager will pause downloads automatically during multiplayer experiences. You will be able to rack up, up to six downloads at a time. Once one is completed it will go to the next. And you can see where everything stands with the Background Download Manager.
"This has been our number one feature since we launched," Greenberg said.
Control Marketplace Videos
The Marketplace video you download can now be rewound or fast forwarded at 2 to 16 times normal speed. You can do this with a controller or the Xbox remote control.
"We realized that people wanted to be able to control that," Greenberg said.
Enhanced Photo Viewing
This will allow you to preserve folders on memory cards when you transfer to your 360 and also tweaks the slidesow.
Music Player and DVD Playback Improvements
On the DVD front, the upgrade will add a feature called DVD Bookmarking, which will allow your 360 to remember where you stopped watching a movie and automatically jump back to it when you slap it back in after a few hours of GRAW. You can even turn off the console or unplug it. They've also tweaked overall DVD performance.
On the music side of things, the 360 will now remember where you were while browsing through your music. Also, now when you launch your music in the background, it will continue to play no matter what you are doing, even launching a new game or hopping around through the blades.
Dashboard Boot-Up
Finally, the update will add an option that you can set-up to allow you to boot up straight into the Xbox Dashboard instead of jumping to whatever CD, DVD or game happens to be in the console's tray when you start it up.
"We think this is going to be the default most people are going to want," Greenberg said.
Friends Status Update
Now, like instant messenger, if you're away and your screensaver turns on (usually after 15 minutes), your Friends status will show you are away. It also will show how long you've been away.
Xbox Live Vision
Msoft will also be loading camera setting to the 360 so the Xbox 360 camera will be fully supported when it hits in September. You might notice some stuff in the menus you can't use, but it's there because it's embedded in the update, you might notice things like a video chat option and the ability to take your picture and use it as your Gamertag image. Woo Hoo!
Here's the best news. This entire update will take less than a minute to download and apply, according to Greenberg and it will be applied directly to the console's flash memory. That means if you don't have a hard drive you will still be able to use the update.
Msoft is still pushing people to connect to get the update, but if you really don't want to, rest assured you can still get it. Greenberg said the update will be added to new game discs in the near future.
"This is the great example of the benefits of a unified service," Greenberg said. "We are soliciting consumer feedback and I think this addresses what a lot of gamers have been looking."
He added that since the 360 launched there have been a whopping 24 million downloads. Yikes.
"Marketplace has really taken off in a major way and we are scaling up for that usage," he said. - GetOffMyLawnKid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8PhantomTrogdor
And when was the last time you truly had fun playing a puzzle game for hours? No thanks
Bombastic...sure it is PS2 only, but still great puzzle game. Chu Chu Rocket also. - ahhell, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Should be good. It will be nice to have a more organized marketplace. Currently, it's a huge mess.
- cello, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I think he means OFFICIAL support .... not some stupid encode RE-encode process that takes forever and is as flakey as a bowl of cereal.
- CrunchyToast, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Do you honestly think that this is for the original Xbox? C'mon, common sense man. This is for the 360.
- digitalgopher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7it's not "old news". the other post basically had screenshots, where as this has more details on the upcomming features.
- KyleRayner, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I know, they really need to up the games available on Marketplace.
Even though its a fighting game, what happened to Street Fighter coming to the XBox Arcade? Heck, give me all the Capcom classics please! - BluKnight, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8I wish they'd put out more updates for backward compatibility with some of the older XBOX games. I would love to see Lego Star Wars play on my 360.
- Buelldozer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6@ToeCheese,
What the hell are you talking about?
A 'fix' is when you take something that is broken and make it work correctly. It's a noun; The act of adjusting, correcting, or repairing.
An "enhancement" is when you take something the presently exists and make it better in some way. To make greater, as in value, beauty, or effectiveness; augment. To provide with improved, advanced, or sophisticated features: computer software enhanced with cutting-edge functionalities.
Perhaps it is you that should "Get This Straight" rather then everyone else. - Morphine7399, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"The targeting system in prime was built because metroid is a puzzle/adventure/platformer", Not a FPS (excluding Hunters for DS) The targeting system was NOT put in place so 'children' could play it, as you say."
I never said it was FPS. I agree it was a platformer but when you look at other platform games, such as ratchet and clank, you still need to aim. The fact that the game didn't make you aim at the enemies rather just press a button when they came on the screen, then press another button to shoot them after it auto targets for you is what made the controls overly simplified. This is why I was claiming it was for children because it took no effort to target something.
"Did you know there are quite a few 10-13 year-olds playing Halo for Major League Gaming?"
Does that mean that the game itself is any less challenging or meant for people of this age? No.
"You sir, are retarded."
Speaking of child gamers... Maybe next time you can try to present your points without seeping to the level of verbally insulting someone over a video game debate. - _Caboose_, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Try this: http://www.duggmirror.com/gaming/Xbox_Live_Update_Brings_Major_Enhancements_/
- The0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4All this stuff is great, but I wonder how many people, come September, are going to snap a pic of their wang and put it as their gamerpic.
- Mastershredder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I can't wait for next Friday. I find it very annoying that the 360 launches the disc every single time. The ability to choose will be wonderful. Active downloading is also a great feature and i'm glad we're getting a lot of new things as opposed to one or two small, insignificant changes.
- 5thfreedom, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6It didn't even occur to me reading the headline and summary that it could be for the original xbox. Why would they even bother releasing this update for their old system? When people say "xbox" now, they are typically referring to the xbox360, because adding that "360" to the end of "xbox" is very cumbersome to say. If I'm speaking of the original xbox I will typically specify.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"And when was the last time you truly had fun playing a puzzle game for hours?"
I've had fun playing a puzzle game for years. It's called ***** TETRIS, bitch! - 5thfreedom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@Overdose
Actually, yeah, most of the time. It's just easier.
I mean, who actually says "I'm playing playstation 2", or "Guess what new game I got for my playstation 2"? It's so much easier to call it simply an xbox or a playstation. Apparently microsoft agrees with me, since they haven't renamed xbox live to xbox360 live.
What it all comes down to is that people will always find SOMETHING to bitch about for every article that shows up on digg, and it's annoying. - balls187, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Try This: http://www.duggmirror.com/gaming/Xbox_Live_Update_Brings_Major_Enhancements_/
If not, I'll post it. - balls187, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8Now, add DivX ;) and xvid playback preese.
- agentbob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3this is a good idea, but it would confuse users when trying to add new friends. On PC instant messengers such as xfire and msn, it's not as bad simply because of the input/interface
- Morphine7399, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"you might notice things like a video chat option and the ability to take your picture and use it as your Gamertag image. Woo Hoo!"
You're probably right though about the control aspect though. Also you can report people on live for having inappropriate names and content related to their account. Although hilarious, I'm pretty sure those people will be banned. - xBDVx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Thing is though, they have to make all the software look integrated and make sure that it all looks nice. They can't just slap together code and let you download it. It's also nice that they put a lot of things into one dl so we don't have to keep updating the system.
This update adds so many of the features everyone (like Joystiq) has been complaining about, and then some. I can hardly wait for it. - djdigital, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"As for when to expect it, considering Major Nelson's earlier warnings regarding demos not being made available on Fridays (as they're unable to observe potential errors), we're guessing it won't be next Friday but the week of the 5th."
- nstern2, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4So they should change the name to xbox360 live? Because the title is the only thing that even has the word xbox in it.
- edzieba, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I wish they'd fix the damn PAL50 issue with Xbox games in the UK. I can play the campaign mode in Halo 2 just fine on the VGA cable (essentially PAL 60), but if I try multiplayer it requires me to switch to PAL 50 mode (unavailable on the VGA cable, so I have to switch to el-crapo mode and use the component cable at 480i). Incidently, there is no network access in the room with a suitable TV, so my options are:
# Use a crappy composite input card to play online with the same monitor I use at the moment
# Buy an excessively overpriced WiFi adapter and play in low definition
# Buy a ridiculously expensive HDTV with composite inputs
# Not play online.
I don't see why the game does not work in PAL 60 in multiplayer mode when it plays just fine in the campaign. It can't be a sound sync issue (No movie-file cutscenes to get out of sync, and no cutscenes at all in multiplayer anyway). Not to mention many games that can't even get in game with the VGA cable due to the same problem. - ericrous, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Just as long as they're not snapping pics of OTHER people's wangs, I'm okay with it. I mean, that's just dishonest.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2What they really need to add is the ability to stream videos from your computer even if you dont have Windows Media Center.
- fr34k5h0w, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2RTFA. It says that they're releasing NEXT Friday.
- Agret, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5You can do that already, how about you try googling for it?
- Dennis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I was just thinking that. In fact, that is all I expected when they announced the camera. Some lewd pic will be taken. If you can put your face in the game though it would be fun to frag a guy with his wang as his face.... I don't know what I'm talking about. Yay for updates though.
- darthsnoopy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The custom gamerpics seem to be "friends only". So you'd have 2 gamer pics...the 'public' one which is one of the many you can have already or purchase...and then the 'friends only' one that you can take with the cam. Done and done
- wevans77, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The ESRB may have to rate the 360 as "Mature" only.
- spikes, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Wonder what hidden updates are included. (*cough*, like scanning the dvd-rom drive firmware)
- nattybohman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I'm sure they won't allow you to put your own pics into gamerpics. I don't remember reading anything about that in the article.
I remember a major nelson interview where they said that they would never let you make up your own pic without some sort of control process. - kingofthescreen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"You might notice things like a video chat option and the ability to take your picture and use it as your Gamertag image."
Does anyone else see a problem with letting people use their own images as their gamertag picture? - dielawn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2yeah, and they'll just go ahead and sneak in the FW update, and your backups are gone.
- hellious, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah. I can already imagine how ugly most people are. I don't need to actually see them. Well, that and bad gamertag Pr0n.
- Jodiuh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I tried VLC360 and kept getting the "another user logged..." error. Add to that the horrible lag for RWD and FF. Yesterday I tried Beta 4 of Transcode 360. So far I haven't gotten an error and the RWD/FF work instantly. I'm running this on a P4 630 and the quality is excellent.
- vlsi0n, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Multiple things i'm very happy about in this update :D.
- vlsi0n, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That really sucks, sorry. I hope that get that fixed asap :(.
- KYDS3K, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Can someone post the list for us poor work-banned souls? If it's not too long . . .
- demonfox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Anyone know if this update is out today?
- joerod, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2anyone with a modded 360 try this? does it effect the dvd firmware?
- PhantomTrogdor, on 10/12/2007, -8/+7Well, the dashboard news isn't new, but the rest is pretty cool. However, I don't quite see myself subscribing simply because of these new features--There needs to be some other kind of attraction, say, a better variety of games. Right now, your choices seem to be first-person shooter, first-person shooter, fighting game, first-person shooter. Toss in something *different*, please.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3I want some of the new xbox games to be able to run on the 360 out of the box it would save alot of time
- Hoov, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0I want to be able to link my Live profile with my regular one. In my house I have a profile, my brother has one and so does my father. They're all labeled as our real names and then we have one seperate Live account since we all play multiplayer.
But, I hate having to switch profiles just to get on Live. All my achievements, games played, etc are under my regular profile. Since "Brad" isn't a Live account, I can't see what friends are online, go to the marketplace or anything like that until I sign out and sign back in under my Gamertag profile.
Does anyone know what I'm talking about? - da_bradler, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1I'm a little worried that future games are going to be coming with this update embeded on them, I wanted to get a second 360 to mod and hack and stuff, but if it's only going to be able to play the games up till now I guess it's not really worth it. I feel sorry for the mod chip people who product is going to be completely useless after this update(more then likely)
