- oldtimegamer, on 10/12/2007, -9/+58With its 4 total users? Hawt!
- fugazi, on 10/12/2007, -3/+36All EA games lag so in a sense they dont work.
- PunkRampant, on 10/12/2007, -4/+33The fact that they didn't warn us or anything probably means it's due to an unexpected outage. This is definitely serious news because I can't remember another time when this happened - it's usually a very reliable service.
- oldtimegamer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+25@mattyice11
If you unplugg the cable from your 360 you can play the local games. You just cant be connect to Xbox Live - mattyice11, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23Private chats still work, but I can't even play my Gears campaign locally.
- camintmier, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20Great... I sign up for Xbox Live for the first time on my Xbox 1, and end up breaking Live for everybody... Go ahead and blame me... I know ya want to.
- L4stM4nSt4nding, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19Didn't PS3 online just break the other day?
- ptcfast2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18The last time Xbox Live was completely down was last year when they were upgrading it to work with the Xbox 360. The announced this about a week in advance to anyone who logged onto live.
The service is robust. Sometimes ***** breaks. Thats when you gotta fix it. Having one year of no downtime is pretty damn good for this type of service. - oldtimegamer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18Mistype sorry. title in real story says 12/27/06
- mattyice11, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17CNN article doesn't mention Live at all.
- ShadowMagic, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18because its a much better service?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14This is *****. Now I can't work on my Seriously... Achievment.
- Dino451, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Just had to happen when I wanted to play GOW!
- Jayslacks, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12No one said that this article was going to cure cancer, jackasses. If you like online gaming, then one of the most important online gaming vectors being down is a big, big deal. And yeah, don't expect this to be fixed until the morning. You guys are going to have to read a book or kiss your wives tonight...
- fugazi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Just checked cant get a Madden game going so you are a liar :P
- alienSkull, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11they better be giving you free service after charging you $600 for a brick
- xelloss, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Actually according to the Xbox.com website http://www.xbox.com/en-US/support/?WT.svl=nav
It says "Status: Up and running.
Xbox Live is currently experiencing issues with Matchmaking. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and Thank You for your patience."
Its been like that for well over an hour since I posted this on some gamespot forums. - aazn, on 10/12/2007, -6/+15Let's recap:
Title was a mishap and it happened 12/27/06
Even though this is 12/28/06 because it's 12:02 AM here.
Lots of people are like "OMFG PS3 + WII = FREE SERVICE WOOT" but everyone who has a brain knows that you can't do JACK with anything else:
Xbox
-Silver:
--Everything but Online Gaming
--Free
-Gold:
--Premium Content
--Online Gaming
--$50 A year - Less than ***** RuneScape
--Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved. Offline Ownage.
Wii and PS3
-Free
-Content (how much? Unknown. Probably ~500MB of trailers and ~2 MB of "arcade" games.
-No Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved
-Web Browser (Okay, I admit, Xbox should have this. Gimmick!)
-Online Gaming
Winner: Xbox
If only Xbox made a web browser, it would be PERFECT!
Oh, and Xbox Live came out WAY before PS2's "online multiplayer." None of Nintendo's consoles had internet before the DS.
Don't take me wrong, I've owned one of each of the giants' consoles. Xbox, PS2, Xbox 360, N64, Gamecube, PS1, I've had my fair share of them all. I have to agree that Xbox 360's service is superior.
Besides, since there are more Xbox 360 fans than Wii + PS3 in this digg, this will get bumped up more than down.
Oh, @tsbesta, Yes, I was sitting in Matchmaking. Then I stopped.
@Anyone that mentioned Private Chats: Thanks. - tweak50, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Wow. Seriously ***** happens. Everything breaks now and again, and its not like its been down for some great amount of time.
- fugazi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Its down not even 5 hours and you are bitching. Add to the fact that private chats and the friends list is still working its not entirely bad.
- bdorry, on 10/12/2007, -6/+14Wasn't fine a few days ago with a fraction of the users xbox live has, but I guess it would be awfully convenient for ya if we all forgot about that
- expiredmeatbag, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8same here, gears of war and halo 2 wont let me connect to friends, but the chats worked fine
- therealrico, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8It is a much better service, and christ it is fifty bucks a year, I think it is pretty friggin reasonable, less than a dollar a week, it does cost money to provide a service like that. I personally don't mind paying if the product is good which it is.
- bdorry, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Right now the only thing my Wii does online is give me the opportunity to.. spend more money. Not really sure that counts as an online gaming service at the moment.
And for the record, I enjoy the system, so don't take this as a slight against it. - FreakTrap, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9@Buelldozer
Welcome to thirteen years ago; population: you. - bdorry, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Now they only need some good games for those servers and we're good to go
- expiredmeatbag, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10When don't you want to play Gears of War?
- oldtimegamer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8yes you can.... read the article.
- bdorry, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7That's almost one junior bacon cheeseburger...hope it stays down for another couple hours.
nm, thoughtfulclown burst the bubble - ptcfast2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8What holes? The first time just part of the service goes down for the first time in more than a year. Define these "holes" you speak of please.
- thoughtfulclown, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7its actually 10.512 cents.... but i'll stop now.
- HappyScrappy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Actually, SOCOM (online for PS2) came out a month before Xbox Live came up. And I personally played Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3 online on the PS2 before Live came out for Xbox (and before SOCOM came out).
So, no, Xbox Live didn't come out before PS2 online. - oldtimegamer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Actually Xbox Live went down today and only about 4 hours ago so its far from old news. The title was a mistype in terms of the time. If you read the article you would see that. Just FYI.
- jeb4, on 10/12/2007, -8/+13i love how microsoft doesn't tell us anything. just that it's down. Ive been on the forums and everyone's been calling. so far we've got an estimate of 20 minutes....and the EARLIEST tomorrow morning.... good luck everyone
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I love how this story about how the earthquake effects us makes it to the front page first, and with double the diggs of the story that reports the actual earthquake and how much of asia has had their internet crippled.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5wait, what? does that have any relevancy or even make any sense at all?
- illt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4broke for me an hour ago.. you're wrong.
- therealrico, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6XBOX live is down, so long online gaming, hello online porn
- bunnymanjp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4god people calm down its not the end of the world
read a book, watch tv or something - Whackly, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10How the hell can anybody get that bent out of shape just because they can't play video games online for a while? Can't you masterbate or something? There has got to be something you can do to pass the time.
- tweak50, on 10/12/2007, -0/+490 cents huh...I hope they chip in some extra cents and issue the refund in the form of McChickens!
- doodirock2, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9There is not proof of that anywhere. Its total speculation.
- litheon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Here's my thoery:
Xbox Live is currently under high load due to the increasing number of users from the purchases of Xbox 360s, original Xboxes, Xbox Live subscriptions, and Xbox Live games. With all of this Xbox Live is probably running at an above-average load. Assuming that the Xbox Live servers around the world are redundant it's also safe to say that the recent internet problems surfacing in Taiwan are forcing a large quantity of Xbox Live traffic destined for the Asia-pacific servers to those in the United States or others in Europe.
I'm certain this problem has absolutley nothing to do with a virus or anything of that sort. It's just load that is highly above average. - RiverBelow, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4If it is an update, please God, let it be Group Chat!! =DDD
@ joe1059
Are you an idiot?PS3 online doesn't even have voice conversations, friends lists, messages, or the ability to invite friends to a game. Nice "ONLINE", Might as well go out in my backyard and yell for people to come play soccer with me. - oldtimegamer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You predicted Xbox Live would go down? Microsoft should hire you asap!
- ByteGuerilla, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I've been playing coop Gears of War with a mate for the past seven hours. Certainly doesn't seem like it's down.
- therealrico, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Digged down because you are a retard, look at the friggin article it is a typo, it has only been mentioned like twenty times so far by other people
- Nuak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Maybe they were preparing a real matchmaking system for Gears of War, to debut in a patch soon...
- willyallthewei, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5That's an interesting comment considering GOW increased live subscriptions by 50%. So by your arithmetic, the rest of Xbox live plummeted 35%?
Good job. - LoungeActx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Stop it with the earthquake crap...the earthquake wouldn't effect the U.S. or European XBox Live. Think about it...how efficient would it be to route say, someone from NY's game packets through Asia and then back? It wouldn't. If I were to venture a guess as to why it was down it would be an overwhelming amount of volume on the servers since you know that holiday where people get presents was the other day and people are just getting back home from visiting family and friends, and they are booting up their brand new xbox's.
