- RedZeppelin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Microsoft should have added three more buttons to the 360 controller: CTRL, ALT, & Delete.
- SeymourBewty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Well, I got my 360 last night, played Condemned for 2 hours, turned it off for an hour, and when I came back, all I got was a black screen with the words "System Error. Contact Customer Support" in about 10 different languages, along with an error code on the bottom of the screen. After a 30 minute battle with Xbox tech support, they pretty much said that it will have to be repaired, and they would send me a box to put it in, and that it would probably take 1-2 weeks to get it back. Condemned is an awesome game, and the two hours I spent with it were glorious. I'm pretty pissed off that I had to wait in line for 5 hours, only to send back a defective system to Microsoft.
- quitter, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Yeah if you think this one is bad you should have seen the XBox 359...
- koolaide, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4looks like there are artifacts on that picture.. possibly GPU overheating?
- puny_midget, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6How is that article BS? If you hadn't noticed, the website is dedicated to Microsoft and its' console. Their forums are absolutely packed full of xbox enthusiats, and yet you're suggesting that this stuff is the "crap we get from too many PS and Apple Fanboys."
I mean, what the hell does apple have to do with a console launch? - mustanggt1989, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I guess we know what 360 part means now. Go to a store, buy an Xbox, 180 it back home, play for an hour, then make another 180 back to the store. Hence 360. Its microsoft's attempt at humor. Remember Microsoft Works. Those funny guys are at it again.
- Bitgod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The square button on the PSP doesn't work. The DS has a screen dust problem, etc... face it, most of the new systems have an issue of sometype. That's what you get for being an "early adopter". Me, I'll wait a few months, until there's more than 2 games that I want to play. Hopefully by then the revised CPU on the smaller die should come out, which should make less heat, which seems to be a factor in these crashes.
- highfructose, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Early Adopters: Welcome to the XBox360 Open Beta!
- radda, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6HAHAHAHAHAHA!
That's what the idiots get for buying a console at launch! Wait two months, you're not gonna miss it! - diggbrian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3My Atari 2600 still works.
- nlatimer, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8This is what happens when you get the Sony rootkit on your Xbox360.
- PercyKittenz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I've got a friend who is a sys-admin for a major publisher and he's told me that the development units they have all have major overheading issues. He's said that they'll overheat if you put a piece of paper on top of them. Also, he's said that the development units were supposed to be pretty much identical to the retail units.
Rendering artifacts are one of the first signs of an overheating problem. Make sure that you keep your 360 somewhere where it can get air. Remember there are 3 3ghz processors in that tiny thing! Putting it in a cabinet with your other hot electronics probably isn't a good idea. - uptown, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Most of those final bids are by people with 0 rep... i.e. fake bidders just screwing up the sytem.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2funny, I haven't had one problem with the thing, even emulating the old xbox games work great, and I didn't believe what they were saying about the old games looking better but, Halo2 and test drive: eve of destruction look really great. shame they didn't get Burnout 3 to run on it yet, I really want to see what that looks like.
I have to say one thing though, It sure runs HOT, gonna' have to add a small exhaust fan to my rack for it.... - gol706, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The artifacts make me think that it's an overheating problem too.
- Infekted, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2yeah i saw some vids of it too...
http://www.youtube.com/?v=wh0OSNezEEw
im not not sure if this is the same as the one on top coz that one wont load on my comp. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Dugg.
Why buy XBOX 360? There is nothing good about this console anyway. - cceverett, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2From looking at the Xbox forum on the Xbox site, it sounds like the system crashing is not the only problem people are having with the 360.
- crummer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2wow, thats really quite a feat! Microsoft has now made something even better at crashing than windows 98 it seems!
- donzoadams, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Do most of you, due to the neg press, the so so games, and the shortage just plan on waiting for a PS3 or Nin Rev.?
- kodak543, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4It's not necessarily the unit. I had some probs like this with my ps2...turns out the exhaust fans were blocked and it was overheating like crazy. maybe its the same here? Next to that, I'd say either a power supply problem, and then if that's not it, a defect in the unit.
- haqattaq, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1hmm.. a heating issue on an appliance that most people will put in their entertainment cabinet/centers. Not very well thought out MSFT.
- WackyT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That's why I like to wait until a new product has been "idiot tested" for a while before buying one.
- Phoenixfury, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1A very wise Internet system admin told me once to never buy anything that has a revison of 0 in it. Well I consider all 360's right now 360.0 which in my opinion means avoid at all costs. :) On the other hand I'm holding out until the price starts drooping, by then they'll have all the major bugs worked out. :)
- mycatsboots, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I checked, and uptown is right, about 1/2 of the bidders on the $1,000+ auctions are 0 rep bidders which will probably be deadbeats. However, I do see a decent amount of high rep bidders bidding on 800-900 dollar systems, which I still believe is insane.
- quiteinsurgence, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I dugg a story where the it crashed for the reviewer here in Orange County and would not turn back on.
- mushoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1LOL check out this video;

I feel sorry for all the people that were still standing in line at 10:30 at BB waiting to get their box. I guess it serves them right for looking at me all gloaty because I didn't get the awesome box and instead got the Aeon Flux Boxset. Meh! I hope they sort this out in time for all the people who will be opening their boxes on X=mas.
Oh well back to watching Aeon Flux and Playing DoD Source. - Abatrour, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I wonder if that's why they limited supply, maybe they have to test them all again and save the good ones to swap with the defects?
- stealthboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"what the hell's a GC?"
Gamecube. - jasqwerty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That's a pretty lame crash screen though :-/
- redban2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I wonder if it has anything to do with non HD signals VS HD
- someirishguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Mine's running just fine so far (knock wood)but wouldn't be to surprised if there was some issues. Damn thing is awfuly noisy compared to PS2, old xbox or even PC for that matter.
- stealthboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"The menu system, resolution on my LCD, and all around interaction make this a must have if you own a pc or a clock radio. "
Uhh... What about the games??? Why is it that everyone on the boards and stuff are going crazy about the system and talking about it, but then they say "I played game X for 30 minutes". What? Isn't this a system meant for playing games and having fun? Man, everyone's perspectives are screwed up on this.
Also, I have a first-day release GC and never had issues, so don't blame these xbox issues on "well, it's a first release". That's not an excuse. Real companies don't rush products to market so they have sufficient testing time. - mycatsboots, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Has anyone else noticed people paying $1,000+ USD for the units on eBay?
Check for yourself, It is insane how much people will pay just to have something first, I pity them if these crash rumors are true. - GTAcrimelord, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"my cousin is on his 5th PS2 because the previous 4 broke.
what does this prove? that there is gonna be a bad system here and there when they sell a million of them?
i can't wait for the PS3's to come out and all these things that people are bitching about come true for the PS3 as well (i.e. price, shortages, crashing/broken systems).
in the meantime, i'll be enjoying my 360 that works perfectly."
What does that prove? It proves your cousin can't take proper care of his stuff considering how I have owned a PS2 since launch, and have had it freeze up on me a total of twice on two seperate games.
Next time, you might want to pull your head out of Bill Gates ass before you start talking. - Dash-2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1A lot of you guys are saying, well.. you put it in the entertainment stand/cabinet so it over heats next to all your other stuff..
Well guess what! That is where it is supposed to go! None of my other electronics over heat (including my launch ps2 that has never had a problem). Stop blaming it on the user and look at the filthy rich man behind it all.
Microsoft is a SOFTware company, hence their name. They should make software and stay out of the hardware industry. - r3zonance, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2LMAO at this one.
They just couldn't help but give the Xbox 360 a blue-screen of death! :P
Old habits die hard, as does release bug free products for M$ - Trepan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I played mine for at least 5 hours straight last night and had no issues. The cabinet I had it in was getting real warm though, so I opened the glass front. This thing throws a LOT of heat. I wouldn't be surprised if it was overheating due to poor ventilation.
- haqattaq, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1jzlosman-
You shouldn't need a workaround. Microsoft should have assumed people will place these consoles in entertainment cabinets. No excuses should be made for a company as enormous as MS making consoles that are out of box failures. And those that do work will only get worse over time..,,if the hardware is getting as hot as some people claim.
It's about testing and planning and apparently MS didn't do enough of it... - clevershark, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2>I hate PS2 fanboys, those things are still defective, especially the "new" thin ones.<
Except of course for those like mine which have always run just fine. You shouldn't let hate control what you say so much. - jsnkc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"4 different games 24 hours of continous use"
Someone needs a life :) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Guessing that there are like a million boxes out there in consumer's homes... and yet in all my googling I have found at most 6 different people with a problem... I would say there is no problem above and beyond the normal manufacturing defect rate. I'll still be buying one 2/12/05 if I can get one.
My xbox 1.0 bought on launch was still working last night. The only defect has been the power cord (which is the main thing under suspicion in the 360's case too!) which was replaced before I knew there was a problem. Damn MS even sent me 2 free games when they dropped the price shortly after launch as compensation without me even asking!!! They tend to look after their customers and while it might be frustrating to get a rare bad unit after all the excitement, I am sure these people will be well looked after - Trjn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2And this is a perfect example of why you should not buy at launch, not only is there the whole limited stock issue, but we all know that first editions often have glitches.
Now, with things like books, that makes it a collectors item, but with electronics and software? That makes it a nuisance.
If the higher potential for glitches doesn't deter some customers, the likelyhood of the price dropping after a while should make the idea of waiting more appealing.
Personally, there are still enough Gamecube games out there for me not to go rushing out to get a brand new console, right now I'm tackling Shadow the Hedgehog, which really does not warrant all the bad reviews its gotten, for one thing, you CAN control the camera. - behn1220, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3The comments left on this story are a perfect example of why Digg needs a mod/comment system similar to Slashdot's. Don't get me wrong...I love Digg for the fact that most stories appear here first (and appear on Slashdot sometimes DAYS later if at all) but I really need a way to filter out the useless and moronic comments (roughly %80 of all comments posted anywhere fall into these categories I would say) so I can spend more time focusing on the posts that actually contain content worth reading. Its almost not even worth looking at the comments on Digg. If Digg could implement this change correctly, it would blow Slashdot away!
- Sculptor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2There is nothing funny about paying $400 for a toy that doesn't work. More like $500 with a couple titles. I'm happy with my PC because I need a fast system for my work so have it for my play. But it is hard to beleive they didn't know about this up front. But if this is for real. I would be about ready to boot up some Open Source and tell MS where to get off.
- MasterDwarf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1why are people mentioning "mine works", "been playing mine for 8 hours straight"? Well no kidding? It's supposed to!! That's the beef, some people's, not just one or two, arent working consistently. After hours of waiting in line and dropping 400 bones, I'd be pissed! Hey, maybe they can exchange it for a different one! When's that next batch due out?
- dontbecreepy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I just wonder when is the class action lawsuit going to happen....
- merdeisel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2mine has been working great all day...
no digg. - redelamore, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I mean E 79 error!
- TubaFrog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Should've bought the Platinum Edition, cheapskates!
