- Gatorade, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This is hilarious! I can't believe that MS would insult the intelligence of anyone like that! What parent is gonna buy lil timmy a 400 dollar console with 60 dollar games? With the Harddrive not standard all games coming for the Xbox 360 will not fully utilize the harddrive. THe HD won't be used for cache, won't be used to store information, won't be used for anything. It will be used as an add on. Look at the PS2 and their HDD. Look at the PS3! They are going to do the same thing. People were complaining so much "make the HD standard like the 360!" well... thats not the case anymore. I think the PS3 is gonna blow the Xbox 360 out of the water now. Its almost official in my book. The "hd era" is a 400 dollar system with 60 dollar games people.
- eqisow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Awesome, now I know two things. How much money I'll be saving with my Revolution, and that I won't be missing a damn thing.
I mean at first I was buying a Revolution on principle... because I strongly dislike M$ and I loathe Sony. (not to mention Nintendo makes kick-ass games) Now, it turns out they're ***** up their consoles anyway. The main advantage of consoles has always been hardware continuity... and $400? Rediculous. - brumdo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I will be waiting for the Revolution which will hopefully stay in the $149 range like they said at E3. I think that 360 will be the new Dreamcast.
- McZiggz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1THIS IS ALL BS!
This just goes to show that M$ is really all about The Bottom Dollar over anything else. They will gladly screw over gamers, consumers, game developers, whoever... with a less than ideal strategy to get the most consoles out the door.
This idea essentially chops the Xbox 360 legs off. Its F'n retarded that a wired version of the controllers even exists, but the biggest problem is that if you sell a console that doesn't come with a hard drive, how can game developers utilize it? They don't want to make a game that requires it if not enough people have it. And they sure as hell won't make 2 versions of a game just for xbox. So now you've tossed out a LOT of plans for harddrive use w/ your xbox 360, might as well not offer it.
Plus next year they will waste time/money on an HDDVD or whatever ... which again will never be used for anything after such a large % of the market has their standard DVD 360s.
Heh, and to think i was a fanboy. I was one of the people who camped out to make sure i would get the 1st Xbox on day one. Did the same for halo2. Just tired of being butt raped by M$ whenever/however they feel like it.
Between their backwards hardware strategies and their mediocre game list so far, i'm going to go ahead and say this is a sign of the end of M$ in the console world.
I guess i'll get the silver PS3 to match my new PowerBook :-) - psychomantis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://www.gamespot.com/news/2005/08/17/news_6131245.html
- Kirin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0:D Please. For one thing, in case you haven't noticed Nintendo has kept their game pricing level with the rest of the industry for as long as they've been around (sometimes even going higher as with the N64). They're a company first and foremost, and if they can make $60 from their games, they will.
Secondly, no official prices for game on any of the systems have been announced. EB had all PSP and DS games listed at $50 right up to almost launch on both systems. They're guesses and placeholders and if you're taking them at face value you're silly.
McZiggz, the reason I mentioned the dvd dongle was mostly to get a reaction. When MS did it for the exact reason you said people called them greedy and evil. Because people have this weird angelic picture of Nintendo, they make excuses. Might not be what you're doing, but it IS fun to watch from people :D
Skeletal Llama, they have said that with the launch of every single one of their systems. They always tout how huge their lineup will be, and what happens? A small handfull of games at launch, and one or two titles at most every couple months for almost a year. Even with their dwindling third party support they rarely release enough buyable games in the first year to make their consoles worth buying, and I've owned em all. This includes, btw, the N64, the DS and the Gamecube. They have decent 3rd party support, but not nearly the support of Sony or even Microsoft these days and it shows and their games, while mostly really good, just don't come out that often. It's not a slight, it's the truth.
Finally, if you think their downloadable library of games will be free? You're *INSANE*. This is the company that charged $30 a pop for single NES games on the GBA. Games they could EASILY have fit 10 onto one of their carts and made a mint. No. You'll either pay out the nose for each game, or it will be a subscription service. They milk their fans, just like every other game company. They're just as soulless, just as greedy as any other corporation out there. - Kirin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oh, and Skeletal, while it's nice that they're going to have old games to download at launch, those can hardly be called launch titles when nearly all of them can be bought for a dollar or two a pop on ebay for their originating systems. It's a nice feature to the system, but if you're going to be spending 2 to 300 for a Revolution just for the old games, you're likely going to be ripping yourself off. There are much easier, much cheaper legal ways to get most of them.
- SkeletaLlama, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Kirin, the Revolution's games will hardly be spread out. There are 50 games currently slated to be released in the launch window, including online Super Smash Bros. and Metroid Prime 3 in 2006 in addition to 100's of nintendo classic titles from NES-N64 for download (possibly for free), plus backwards compatibility with Gamecube and it's possible that Sega will be releasing 50 games of their own for download on launch day. If all this holds up, that's the biggest set of games any system has ever launched with.
- Superfito, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If I hear someone say "I'm going to wait for a Revolution because this or that" I think I'm going to puke. No one has any idea on whatt the cost is going to be and if you think it's going to cost you 149.99 you are retarded. It's going to cost atleast 200 and if it doesn't then its going to be a ***** system and basically a Gamecube 1.5 . I'm buying a next gen system for next gen games, not to play games that are 15 years old that I probably already own.
- Blackvaine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0whaatttttt.... i think they should keep it CHEAPER, cause all the 300$ pricetag means is that i am not going to buy it for a year or so! >.
- daze, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0psycho beat me to it with actual numbers. good job man.
- titanass, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Stupid MS are idiots looks like I now have to wait for PS3, was planning on getting the 360 but after this last announcement I believe they are flawed. No standard hard drive gotta use old school lame memory cards(2 steps back), no HD optical drive(and you claim HD generation), no standard wireless controllers, no developer support for optional drive.
They are making a huge mistake with 2 price points I would have respected them more if they had the 1 at $399 with all the goodies, no one will buy the $299 version but devs will have to build games suited for it leaving all the rest of us to suffer. I think they'll have no problem with supply and demand now. - reaver, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What the hell is MS thinking?!?! HDD SHOULD BE STANDARD IN EVERY CONSOLE!!! You MUST buy a 40 dollar memory card with the 300 dollar version so really you are paying 340.
I'm not buying this thing anymore, too much money, way too much. - MacGyver, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This pisses me off. At E3 they made it look like the wireless controllers would be standard, now you have to pay an extra $100 just to get wireless and a 20gb hd.
- M3wThr33, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sounds like Superfito and some other people are a bit bitter.
Part of the reason the PS2 was a break-away success was because it had backwards compatability at launch.
Understand in an interview, MS confirmed you NEED a hard drive to play Xbox games.
Parents are going to go into and see two of them and see it'll cost $100 to play the first games and then they're going not buy the extra stuff since he's been done with them for a while. - goduke06, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0im sure someone will hack it so you can put a regular hard drive in there anyway
- dtrinh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0... thats what the link is reporting.
- cainrok, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't see a point in getting one til you can get a HD-DVD drive in one. Although that might be a while and there probably won't be any games that feature the HD-DVD drive.
- jmdajr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0is anyone actually going to get the 299 one?
- dtrinh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well, it appears as if Microsoft learned its lesson from the last console round -
I. You dont have to have the most powerful stuff
II. Be first to market.
Anywho - I seriously dont understand why they cant make the 20gb hd standard... the $399 Version appears to be the best console (just because of the hdd) -
Also, if anyone follows the link to PlanetXbox360 (it's labeled "Read") - it says the $299 version gets a wired controller, and the $399 gets a wireless one. I thought all the controllers were wireless? - Vill4no, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The hard drive is the only reason why I will get the $399.99 package they should've at least included an Xbox Live Gold subscribtion.
- kidicarus74, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Why blow $400 on an Xbox when you could get a high-end 3d card?!"
because generally it helps to have a whole system as opposed to just a video card sitting on a table somewhere... and whole highend pc's cost a hell of a lot more than an xbox 360 - psychomantis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0and accessories.

They get what they deserve. Titatnass your wrong most ppl bitch net-gen consoles to be over $299 .Ms smart move to stop the whinners!!! Just remember you get what you pay for. For all the cheap basters!!!!!!!!!!!
- FuzzyBunny, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1No surprises here, pretty much what everyone expected. I'm a little disappointed that the $299 version doesn't have a hard drive though.
- EastCoaster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I am a little upset that the hard drive is not standard. I am sure some games need the drive while others are enhanced by it. Here is to M$'s "Value Pack"! I for one will be getting the $399 version.
- daze, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0some of you guys cry way too much. the $100 difference includes a wireless controller and headset -- that alone is worth $80. the harddrive is easily worth another $20, the HD cables are worth $20, the remote is another $20. so for your extra $100, you get $150 worth of stuff, at least. if you have a problem with deals, buy the $299 version and add on as you can. you know these accessories will be sold separately. consoles have been $299 base price for 6 years now. this shouldn't be a shock.
- hasanahmad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0check out the best Xbox 360 blog:
http://xboxer360.blogspot.com - GamerSDG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0all i have to say that i will be sleeping out side gamestop door to get my hands on one
- Coronato, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Honestly who cares about wirless controllers? If youve ever used a wireless mouse on the computer you know it blows!! Half the time some interference will make your mouse move and randomly open things on your comp when ur just sitting their. Becuase its wireless you WILL get interference that will mess up gameplay.
- Kirin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Still a few months for things to change. The hard drive thing strikes me as weird (the rest of it is just fine IMO). It'll be interesting to see how they handle all this. They may be greedy, but they usually have their plans fairly well laid out, even if it means streaming new levels for live without HD play. I mean hell, the 'Revolution' (blech what a name) will be able to download and play a lot of Nintendo's back catalog and it doesn't have a hard drive either.
I'm betting they'll have a good amount of solid state storage memory (enough for a few maps/demos/etc) on board that will do the job that the hard drive does right now, but if you want to have a lot more stored on your system then you'll have to pony up for the hard drive. - eqisow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ouch, if that is true that would leave Europe paying the equivilent of almost 500 U.S. dollars.
- Kirin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0By the way... I would call this official...
http://www.xbox.com/en-US/press/2005/0817-xbox360launchdetails.htm - FuzzyBunny, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Coronato, the wireless console controller experience is very different from the wireless mouse experience. Both the Wavebird and the Logitech PS2 controllers are awesome. I haven't used the Xbox Logitech one yet, because of the obvous issues with the headset.
Kirin, I think that the controllers use regular batteries out of the box. You have to buy the play and charge kit for $20 if you want a rechargeable battery. See psychomanis' post up above. - henningh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Is there no way to save games on the Core $299 version? No HDD, no memory card mentioned.
- wilf_brim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The $100 difference is, I think, worth it for what you get. However..
I am very, very worried about the future of the HDD. As it is optional, and (historically) nobody buys optional gear, devs don't support it. Just when they are getting good at using the current hd to cache levels and textures, etc they will pull it away.
And I thought that the Xbox was supposed to have integrated 802.11g wireless! Crap! I was waiting for the 360 so I wouldn't have to upgrade my 802.11b bridge, now I have to go and do it. - ReyBrujo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"psychomantis, are you saying it will be 399 here and 399 euros in europe? Even though $399 is roughly 325 euros?"
Wouldn't be the first time. Usually UK inhabitants get the worst out of it. As for wireless controllers, all the guys I have ever seen playing FPS or racing games put their faces as close to the screen as possible, so I have yet to find someone playing while laying on his bed ;)
I will wait for Revolution. Based on previous prices (and since the GC is still USD 210 here), a PS3 or XBox360 will be like USD 700 or 800 down here :( - ProAm500, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well, if you ask me, and I'll get killed for this. The $399.99 one is a MUCH better value then the $299 one.....You get a lot of crap for the extra $100 bucks....
- FuzzyBunny, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Psychomantis, where are you getting all your info from?
- psychomantis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I dont now buddy maybe you European folk are getting it at the same price because the system is launching at the same time i really don't now but that's what it says.
- hayden.evans, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0why are hard drives not standard in the 360 models? are they seriously downgrading themselves to memory cards?
- metroidchief, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The Revolution is seeming to become a better and better deal all the time. It will come standard at Probably no more than $250 with wifi built in, wireless controller, backwards compatibility, free online play, cheap non-proprietary memory format (SD cards; 128 MB card is only $12), and huge library of games at launch with the promise of new and original titles to come that don't suffer from the rehashes that the other platforms will have to endure. I can't laugh however because I am going to get a 360 because i love live and will buy the thing when Halo 3 is released, but judging by Bungie's speed at delivering Halo 2 i won't have to buy one until 2009. :)
- julian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Something that everyone has overlook....
How am I going to connect my 5.1 surround system to the Xbox360?
Do I have to pay extra for that too? - Blunt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What is the major problem here guys. The unit is $100 more than the original was. They didn't take anything away from you. Just made another SKU for those parents or kids who can't fork over the 4 bills right away. I for one am happy to pay $400 for this machine...if you can't afford the hard drive version we are all sorry.
- F10x, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What is the major problem here guys. No one know how to save.
- SkeletaLlama, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Seriously, anyone who thinks wireless controllers has definitely not used Nintendo's Wavebird. It gets perfect reception on every channel, even when I'm using three computers on a wireless network and cordless phones in the same house. In addition I can play it through several walls. I can play (if I could see it) my gamecube in the basement when the controller is in the attic. If the 360 can't match the Wavebird's quality than M$ deserves to be the next Dreamcast.
On the other hand, I think I'll be getting a Revolution. The price is better, I can download all of Nintendo's classic games, it comes ready for wireless Internet and will cost less than half what the 360 will. Plus, I'd bet the games will be far less expensive, given that the development costs won't be in the tens of millions like the 360 and PS3 will be.
I was very excited about the 360, it seemed like such a good value. But now that I've learned it'll be just as big of a rip off as any Sony system, I'll go back to Nintendo. Viva La Revolution! - FuzzyBunny, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"It'll send a message to MS & Sony that we will not bend over while they shove these prices up our asses."
Considering that Microsoft has yet to turn a profit with the Xbox I hardly consider the prices as "shoved up my ass". Even at $400 you're paying far less than the hardware is actually worth. If the hardware is solid and reliable and has the games to back it up, I'm more than willing to pay that. - Kirin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Conto
Hey, great idea. Wait for a console that absolutely no information has been released on other than it plays games that have been out for 15 years :P I'm very curious about the Revolution but telling people to wait for a system they know nothing about is silly. Then there's the fact that no one knows what price it will be, and it's also not games only. They're going the Xbox 1 route and selling a dongle to play dvd movies, not to mention the first year of games on any Nintendo console are so sparse and spread out it's never worth buying it at launch. - McZiggz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0kirin - do u not have any other dvd players in your house?
I first thought, oh thats silly to not include the dvd player too. Then i thought... wait wtf do i care for... i have 5 dvd playing devices in the house (double that if u count computers). If i can save $30 on the console's overall cost... i hardly NEED another dvd player in the house.
I too am looking forward to the Revolution, i think it could really take this generation of consoles by surprise. - F10x, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Just remember you get what you pay for.
