- strotee, on 10/12/2007, -10/+47Shhhhh we don't need facts in Digg. Leave now...... go, before you awaken the mob
- aegis9975, on 10/12/2007, -10/+46Also, not sure why the OP didn't mention the PS3 outsold the 360 according to the same link; I guess more fanboy propaganda.
PlayStation3 50,171
Xbox 360 35,343 - admirabumblebee, on 10/12/2007, -5/+38Handheld's are also top in american. GBA/DS (and even psp) are well above anything else... Not even the ps2 can come close to the GBA.
It has little to do with 'culture' and everything to do with the fact that they're cheap, quick, accessible fun. - DanteDefiance, on 10/12/2007, -2/+34Mother of mercy! The DS Lite is like some kinda unstoppable radioactive monster in Japan. All fear DSzilla!
Seriously though...every week the DS sells like 100,000 units. I mean how many people could there be left in Japan that don't own the freaking system? Their practically circulating it as currency now. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+37er, why are we celebrating the 360 beating sales of a 5-yr old console? Thats like saying, 'wow, the Wii is outselling the Xbox, AMAZING!'
- trunkster, on 10/12/2007, -5/+34I don't believe home consoles in Japan will ever sell as well as handhelds. It's just has to do with how the culture is. Students will have the most time for playing handheld systems while traveling to where they have to go. High School students get home late especially since most go to some kind of cram school. So that means they would only be able to play during the holidays and Sunday (since they go to school on Saturdays) and even during that time they have to study.
This leads to the most sells for home consoles going to anime otakus (which the PS2 has the most anime RPG and other genre games hence Blue Dragon comes out and 360 is instantly popular). Otakus are sort of looked down on in the culture due to how they mainly watch anime all the time and play video games.
For normal students, once in college they get a little more free time, at least compared to how much they had when studying to get into college, and will find more time for home consoles. All in all, handhelds will always be number one in Japan. - Phil246, on 10/12/2007, -7/+23So?
the ps2 is old. very old. You dont exactly expect the snes to outsell the xbox now do you?
Buried as lame ( and because its just fanboy bait ) - johnsto, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18This story is meaningless given that in Japan there are already more people who own a PS3 than a 360 - and the PS3's only been out there for a month. (Yes, PS3 sold more in a month than 360 in a year)
So really, it's a case of PS3 outselling the 360 outselling the PS2.
edit: ooh, forgot link: http://www.mcvuk.com/PS3-storms-ahead-of-360-in-Japan - clunder, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Have you been to Japan? There are a ton of people sitting on a train for a long time with nothing to do. Every time I got on a train someone (any age group) was playing a DS Lite with brain age or some other educational game. One interesting thing is that most of the younger kids only have the old school DS and the teenagers and adults have a colored DS Lite.
- kfsutops, on 10/12/2007, -6/+19Marked as lame. You link to basically a forum, which is then linked to another site where supposedly this article is there to back up what you (and the forum) poster are saying.
But where is the article? Too hard to find the article. - johnhummel, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15Except - the PS3 went on sale, and *that* outsold the Xbox 360 and the PS2. If the PS3 wasn't out this would be news - but this is like the PSP claiming they outsell the GBA and they're "winning" while the DS smokes them both.
- DanteDefiance, on 10/12/2007, -6/+19"You dont exactly expect the snes to outsell the xbox now do you?"
In Japan? Yes.......yes I do.
It's true that the PS2 is on it's last legs and the 360 is a new system, however the BIG news is that the 360 is actually being SOLD in Japan. Have you ever seen the Xbox sales in Japan? They were practically non existent. The friggin Dreamcast was out selling it. Yet in spite of that MS had the balls to try again. And you know what? It may just pay off.... - endekks, on 10/12/2007, -12/+24There's also the matter that everyone already has a PS2, so no one needs to buy them any more. Even if the 360 is outselling the PS2 this month, I would hardly consider it to be an ongoing trend, especially after the fervour for Blue Dragon dies down a bit.
Or should I just say "SONY IS TEH DOOMEDZORZ!!!" as is so popular now-a-days by all the people who don't own a PS3? - Jaymoon, on 10/12/2007, -6/+17"er, why are we celebrating the 360 beating sales of a 5-yr old console?..."
Because up until now, the 5-yr old console was beating the 360. - tknaught, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14"Handheld's are also top in american. GBA/DS (and even psp) are well above anything else... Not even the ps2 can come close to the GBA."
Any evidence to back up that opinion?
Worldwide Hardware Sales (End of September 2006)
PS2 - 111.25 million
Game Boy Advance - 76.79 million
http://forum.pcvsconsole.com/viewthread.php?tid=8498&page=2 - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13You already have... Your tax dollars have paid for millions of copies of Windoze on government computers.
- timusca, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12How this stuff makes it to the front page, I will never know.
- ksins5, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Sounds like Microsoft PR is desperate for good news in Japan.
- HappyScrappy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8It's not selling in Japan. This was Blue Dragon week. They sold 35,000 units because of Blue Dragon this week.
It'll fall back to dismal numbers next week, count on it. Maybe it won't fall to the level that PS1 is beating it again. But surely it'll fall back to selling less than PS2, PS3, DS, GBA and Wii. Which means it'll be selling fewer than every major gaming device sold by both of their competitors. - thecheatah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Thank you!
I dont understand why people find this hard to believe or accept to be good practice! - Valleye, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6@clunder, hand-me-downs you think?
- HappyScrappy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7And it widened further this week. After last week, there were 10,000 more PS3s sold in Japan than 360s. After this week, it's 30,000, because despite the 360 besting the PS2, the PS3 bested the 360.
- hypeiv, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6xbox 360 only needs to sell 120 million more units world wide to beat the the PS2... good thing sony is helping them out by releasing the ps3... that should slow the PS2 down!
- staticneuron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@SupaDawg
It has been said many times. It is because of the games. What made the PS2 so successful were the off the wall games, their first party titles and the heavily japanese influenced 3rd party games. Take a look through a large list of the PS2 games. If the majority of that list doesn't appeal to you then you will understand how the japanese feel about the 360 (and quite a few americans and europeans). You think the xbox and the 360 are great (I would imagine cause of the games) thats they way other people feel about the playstation line. - goosepillows, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6although nintendo has made some bad decisions with its last two consoles,
it's first party software is still some of the best in the industry. talking about blinded judgement is ridiculous considering you should judge the hardware and software not some other entity.
you may perceive a glut of pro nintendo or microsoft sentiment because
a) the wii is a differentiated product with a nice price point and a killer app
yes zelda is killer. and a few other entertaining demo type games (think ds release)
b) the software and experience you get right now with 360 is superior or comparable to a ps3. sony will have time to emulate aka copycat xbox live, but the online approach of microsoft is at this time the industry leader
and because i can purchase a wii and a 360 for the price of a "premium" ps3.
only a fanboy would argue for the ps3 based purely on a cost analysis.
you can play resistance or you could easily play gears of war. and then you can wait a while for a worthwhile exclusive for ps3. i dont play final fantasy and i tend not to support a company whoring off a high definition dvd format for its own financial gain. so i dont really give a hoot about the ps3. - Zoids, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@ Propapanda:
There is the backspace key for a reason. - sryb, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6OMG XBOX360 OUTSELLS A 6 YEAR OLD SYSTEM !!!!! GRATZ DUDEZ!!!!!!
- mrsexzzmaleman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5No GTA4 is going to be the best. What makes you think that the "shock and awe is going to wear off" with GTA4. You do realize that Rockstar also made Vice city and San Andreas and the "shock and awe" will never wear off with those. The Gta series will never die, unless Hillary Clinton rigs the election. But she won't because everyone will know she's too big of a ***** to win and they'll demand a recount.
P.S. I'm pretty much fed up with Sony, I don't know about anyone else. - sakuraz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think "DS Lite slaughters PSP" got them.
- BlackKnight6, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6The reason they are 'celebrating' it is because this is the first time MS beat Sony in their own turf with regards to PS2 sales. That is a real tough thing, especially with Japanese culture having the characteristic of being so loyal to their own Japanese companies.
- SupaDawg, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Personally, i don't understand why people focus on Japan so much. The market is larger in the north american & european areas. The original xbox was the top selling console in canada, the xbox360 will be the same. I can easily see the 360 winning the united states and europe... if not coming a close second to the wii.
Besides, as CONSUMERS, why do we give a rats ass how many consoles sell as long as the console remains profitable enough to keep developers jumping aboard? - staticneuron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2case in pont:
Today Evolution Studios announced that its next-gen racing game MotorStorm is the best-selling PlayStation 3 game in Japan.
http://ps3.ign.com/articles/751/751194p1.html
Yeah a game made in the UK outsold all those japanese games (including gundam). - drifter, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7Can we all just buy the consoles play them and have fun? When did this sudden need for dominance come in to place? I am buying a PS3 once i get off my ass and try looking but why should it matter to you?
- hypeiv, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7people on digg are pro-wii and pro-360 becuase Kevin Rose is and talks about it all the time on the digg podcast.
- staticneuron, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4@BlackKnight6
You are repeating a lame excuse really. Its been 53 weeks. The 360 has sold 232,500 in this period of time while the original Xbox sold 380,000 in the same amount of time. What does that tell your business sense? You offer up the excuse that the japanese are loyaly to thier brands but in actuallity that is ony a small part of it. The other parts are practicality and appeal. MS's new surge in sales is that they hit upon something appealing. Which if they had been doing from the start it would have been selling like hotcakes. As far as the car rant, maybe it has to do with american cars being gas guzzelers and not having the greatest ratings on being reliable.
The only people who are offering up the loyality excuse are people who are enamored by live and the 360's lineup and cannot grasp that everyone doesn't feel the same way they do The reast understands and celebrates MS small stepps forward with blue dragon and games like trusty bell and Lost Oddessey.
All in all if you are marketing to a society the smart "business" move is to appeal to your target not just appeal to some and hope it works on all.
Not to mention being beat out buy thier previous generation and a system that has only been out for a month is not a good sign, no matter how you slice it. - pw1388, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow Microsoft should feel proud of themselves that they finally beat the PS2 a game system that is 6 years old already. Congrats Microsoft!
- HappyScrappy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1that post wasn't clear.
As of last weeks reporting, there had been 10,000 more PS3s sold in Japan in total (3 weeks) than Xbox 360s total sold in the year it had been out. With this data added, it's almost 30,000 more PS3s sold in Japan in total than Xbox 360s.
I say "sold" because some number of those PS3s were sent overseas. But the direction is clear. 360 lost the overall sales lead to PS3 (in nextgen) in Japan in 3 weeks, and will only fall further behind.
Of course, if you count Wii as next-gen, it's outselling them both. - sint4x, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Does this mean the 360 sold more than playstation one???
Who would have thought? - johfirth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yeah i work at a store that sells both the ds and the psp, tons and tons of psp in stock, and the other day we had lines before we opened because there was a rumor that we were getting some ds in stock that day.
- SupaDawg, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3I don't know about your country, but here is canada the PS2 is $129. I'm even considering picking one up and i'm still feeling the assrape sony put me through with my first ps2.
- Propapanda, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4The DS lite is a huge success because it takes the place of Subway Rape.
Why the hell did I just say that? Dig me down please.
Anyway back on topic, 360 is cool and all but it's a complete and utter failure in Japan.
Seriously, subway rape? What the ***** was I thinking. :( - buckynekkid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Try to keep up, okay. The title says "in Japan." Because of this all responses reflect the fact that we are talking about sales figures... in Japan. I know it is confusing, but try hard to pay attention. Those 1up NPD numbers are for NA. I knew something was wrong when the X360 had such a high number of sales.
- woogley, on 10/12/2007, -9/+9more importantly, Wii outsells both X360 and PS3, just short 76 units of selling more than the two put together.
I am now embracing for digg down impact. - aerogant, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1You guys are confusing total sales (life of the product), versus sales in a cycle. The PS2 had come out almost a year before the GBA, when you take that into account, the GBA is ahead. On top of that the Nintendo DS came out 3 years in the life of the GBA, and probably eroded it's sales potential since it is backwards compatible with it's games. If you take into account both the NDS and GBA as the GBA platform, then it has outsold the PS2 by even more. That isn't necesarily saying that handhelds are more popular then consoles, there isn't a good way to measure this except through surveys, since people can have multiple consoles and/or handhelds, and they can become broken, requiring people to buy new ones, plus people may buy both handhelds and consoles, and end up using one of them a lot and the other not at all, or use them not as game systems but as media devices (DVD player, mpeg player, etc).
As for the numbers for last month :
http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3155757
NDS 918k
PS2 664k
GBA 641k
360 511k
Wii 476k
PSP 419k
PS3 197k - aerogant, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I was responding to the "admirabumblebee" "tknaught" discussion about GBA versus PS2, maybe try reading the thread first before digging down and responding?
- bokchoi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2The 360 thing is a bit of a suprise, the latter part with the DS lite is not. Hoping some anti-sony would get attract diggs?
- firsttodie, on 10/12/2007, -8/+8Why is all the gaming news on digg these days pro Nintendo and or Microsoft and con Sony? sure Sony has made a few stuff ups but do they really deserve all this bad media? and a bogus front page story like this with unverified figures. like johnsto and others said this article is meaningless.
I know everyone wants to see the underdog win (Nintendo) but lets not let that blind our judgment. - buckynekkid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1The 360 is still losing Japan to their real competition (read: same-gen competition), the PS3 and Wii.
- deadmilkman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@tknaught
Next time, use thought...Don't post worldwide sales numbers to argue against US/Japan.
GBA does a LOT better in the US and Japan than elsewhere in the world (nearly equal or better than the PS2)
Accurate numbers on hardware:
GBA (as of Sept 06) 39.6Million in North America (34.3 in USA) via NoJ http://www.nintendo.co.jp/n10/news/061026e.pdf
PS2 (as of Dec 06) 35.8 Million in USA
Via NPD group. http://www.next-gen.biz/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=4362&Itemid=2
That's around a 4% difference...a FAR FAR cry from your nearly 25%+ difference via worldwide sales eh? - xmuzik, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Even if the PS3 outsells the Xbox 360 this generation, I think it's very short sited for people to dog the Xbox or say its a crap system. Microsoft keeps getting better & better with the Xbox series & in my opinion will eventually come out on top. Personally I prefer the 360 to all the other systems & I loved my original Xbox. My only complaint is that I can't play Zelda on them , so I keep buying Nintendo's just for that 1 series.
