- lpmiller, on 10/12/2007, -0/+53I wish. Support for dvix/xvid would pretty much make the 360 perfect in my eyes.
- chris4404, on 10/12/2007, -5/+57What the hell does that have to do with anything?
- aurrea, on 10/12/2007, -2/+41@ behn1220
Thanks d*ck. Didn't know google can convert my DVDs. Swell..... - jarinudom, on 03/31/2008, -0/+28This is great, because Connect360 supports streaming video from my Mac to the 360, but damned if I was gonna convert all my movies to WMV!
- mrfreeziexp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+26mpeg4 doesn't mean Divx/Xvid. Unless they state it specifically, I doubt that they will support those formats.. :/
- LordStandley, on 10/12/2007, -5/+22This, is Caketown
- behn1220, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19You can already transcode Divx/Xvid files and stream them to your Xbox 360 pretty easily. Check http://www.tversity.com or http://www.runtime360.com for details. I've been using TVersity for awhile now and I couldn't live with out it.
- spamdigger, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18Finally I can watch the H.264 versions of Diggnation, DL.TV etc on the 360... this is great. Makes we want to get a second 360 for the bedroom just for the media extender features.. surely beats an Apple TV.
- kraemer007, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15At 15Mbps for H.264 I don't know how high the HD resolution that it will cover will be. I think 720p will squeeze in under that number but probably not 1080p.
- Cyber_Akuma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Ever tried playing h264 encoded video on XBMC using a normal Xbox? Its not pretty. I think I actually managed 0.25 frames a second once. The 360 shouldent have a problem though.
- mrfreeziexp, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Finally, something useful comes from this spring update.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11This doesn't work on Mac though, behn.
- Septimus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10You can do pretty decent 1080P at 14Mbps.
- kraemer007, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8ALSO, H.264 is part of MPEG4 so when they say MPEG 4 do they mean the part2 codec that is DIVX compatible?
- durex, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12So does this mean youll be able to stream divx videos to it as well??
- edstate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Hopefully this will mean Connect360 will be able to handle these formats as well. You know, for us Apple/M$soft360 hybrid monsters.
EDIT: ...what jargonwhat said... - aurrea, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Can someone tell me a program that I can convert my DVD's to (i.e. this H.264 or whatever) and stream them to my 360?
- nrighton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7handbrake (mediafork) will convert DVD's to MP4 in one easy step. Works on MAC, LINUX, and WINDOWS. Best of all it's free !!
- limpbizkitt0, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Ahhh finally Microsoft finally supports the format of choice for us HDTV pirates
- SfOwnsLa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Well I do like to keep things simple, while the PS3 lets you install Linux w/ no problems I don't wanna have to boot into linux and out when I wanna play a game. Encoding is simpler for me.
- edzieba, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5No info on container support though, Will it accept .mkv (probably not, even though it's an open format and pretty popular)? .mp4? .avi (though anyone who puts h.264 in .avi should be shot)? Will the softsub portion of .mp4 be supported? Multiple audio tracks?
- GeneralAntilles, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Buy a used Xbox (original) and mod it. Then it'll play pretty much whatever you want.
- alwaysmc2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4aurrea, I use http://magicdvdripper.com
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4http://www.runtime360.com
- Saiing, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"Soooo, how long before DivX/Xvid support? With those two I'll be a happy bunny."
Slashdot are reporting on the front page, that it includes Xvid support (don't know whether this is accurate or not). If so, this is fantastic news.
http://games.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=07/04/09/162212&from=rss - InsaneGeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4NTSC broadcast rate for mpeg2 1080i is 19mb/sec. With H.264 being significantly better compression alogrithm, one should be able to do 1080p at 15mb/sec and be very watchable provided you have the horsepower to decode it.
- hakujin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Just to empathize, you can easily encode 1080p at very respectable HD quality under 15mbps w/ h264/x264.
- limpbizkitt0, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5no it does not mean you can stream divx or xvid in anyway
- gweedo767, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3If you want to get even more perspective on this, look at what Dish Network does for their HD content. Their MPEG4 ASP profile HD channels are broadcast at between 4-6Mbps at wither 1080i or 720p depending on the channel and look great on my 32" LCD.
- BritBloke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+315 Mbits should be good enough for full 1080p resolution files. I'm looking at some files now which have a bitrate between 9 - 12 Mbits. Obviously, the higher the bitrate, the better the picture.
- heaintheavy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3All right, I am getting an Xbox 360 Elite when it comes out.
- PlayWithFire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i can stream most XVID and DIVX stuff though TVerstity, but those 720P MKV files are a bit too much for my PC to handle. I am really hoping MKV will be supported.
- PAJK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Am I the only one who has not been able to get TVersity to work? There are no clear instructions anywhere. And I don't have Windows Media Centre, so I can't use runtime360...why isn't there something straightforward?
- Felonious, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Just because it says mpeg-4 does not mean it will play XViD. Each mpeg-4 codec uses a different quantization type. XViD and DiVX both are labeled as h.263 codecs. That is why any DiVX certified DVD player will also play XViD. Codecs like x.264, Nero Digital and newer Quicktimes fall under the h.264 spec. So any player that plays h.264 spec video can handle any of the codecs listed. Both h.263 and h.264 codecs fall under mpeg-4 video yet they are very different in the way they are encoded (written) and decoded (played).
- rohanch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2They say part 2, which is good, but they also say "Up to 5 Mbps peak, Simple Profile with 2 channel AAC LC."
http://www.xbox.com/en-US/community/news/2007/0408-im.htm
Note: Simple Profile. DivX and XviD are implementations of Advanced Simple Profile which is different, so it doesn't look like they'll work :( - Velirno, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well at least I can find a freaking converter for these formats.
- geoken, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just keep in mind that the xvid streaming apps are doing live transcoding on the PC that's serving the content. People always gloss over this fact, but if your content is bieng served from a PC that someone else is using the content will be jumpy and/or the PC will lag if it's specs aren't high enough.
- FallenWings, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I was waiting for this exact same breakthrough. Now I can *really* take advantage of that Netflix subscription :)
- diargasm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No support for divx/xvid? Wow, doesn't MS realize that the majority of people who buy mp3 players use pirated songs? Imagine buying an ipod an only being to play songs bought off of itunes. So why don't they apply that same mentality for the Xbox 360 and support divx? I'm sure they'll get a lot more sales of the 360. The movie studios probably wont let them.
- edzieba, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1MKVtoolnix is ludicrously easy to use.
- ALfuckingBUNDY, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is great.. except for the fact I already made alot of things into wmv files. Well now I have a reason to stay on the computer and re-rip files to save space.
- stucktildekey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's about time...
- idleminded, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Our bees will blot out the sun!
- macko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They say Part 2 on the xbox website
- dielawn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1PS3: Now supports Deez Nuts
- nonzzero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Woo, now I can stream my Mac media library. It's ideal, since Apple TV costs about the same but doesn't play video games.
- Mejogid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+150% wireless signal, depending on the measure used, gives around 15 Mbps - 54 Mbps is a theoretical maximum and is completely unobtainable in any practical environment.
- Jamfan16, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@PAJK:
This thread helped me get it setup.
http://forums.tversity.com/viewtopic.php?t=3611 - Zero2aHero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Doesn't it already support playsforsure? I play my stuff I downloaded with my urge subscription without any problems...
- ScaryFast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1p.s. I know all about Transcoding. It has many annoying points. You have to find the media, click the more/info button on your remote to open up a menu, choose Transcode, and wait a bit. If you're lucky it will play back the video without pauses that result in skips in the video. You also can't see how long the video is as it only shows the length of the transcoded bit. So at the beginning of the video, if you pause, it will tell you the video is 2 minutes long. or if you try and skip ahead you have to wait will it does it. It's far from perfect and I could only used it a handful of times before abandoning it.
I've also abandoned Media Center on my PC using a cable to my 46" TV because it steals focus. If you want to watch a video on your TV while browsing the web on your main monitor, Media Center will steal your mouse and make your displays flicker and stuff while you take it back. And when you are using your web browser, or MSN, and want to pause the video, your remote will no longer work because Media Center no longer has focus.
Instead, I use ZoomPlayer with remote control on that display, which still takes away remote control functionality while you do other stuff, but at least it doesn't make my screens flicker and go black if I simply click the zoomplayer window with my mouse to pause or play.
Media Center is only used on my laptop now when I go to my moms and use their big screen, because I'm not trying to use the laptop for anything else at that time. -
