- underburn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5***** Microsoft.... why the hell would they advertise it vertically on almost every if not all peices of propaganda they release?
- CplCarrot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4
Great so ONE person gets a dud bit of information about his dud 360 puts it on the net and next thing it is on the front page of Digg as TRUE! It is NOT TRUE. This is a unit that is not performing to spec. There is loads of data out there that contradicts this person's blog information. - kirk06, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3No digg.
It's been confirmed over and over again the console can be played in either position.
Old news, anyway...I remember this being discussed launch-week. - kingmanor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2this is ridiculous. Every store display has it in vertical position. You go to a store, see the item, like it, buy it, set it up at home the same way, and it eats your disc. Somehow, that's not MS's fault? that's BS and it will not hold up in court.
I can't wait for some display model in best-buy to eat a disc and go brick. MS F'd up big time with this and is asking for a class action lawsuit if they don't fix it. This is similar to the disc read error problems with PS2. Sony agreed to fix it that and still got hit with a class-action suit. - cool8man, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3If you seriously believe that the Xbox 360 is not meant to play games in a vertical position you are incredibly retarded.
I have spoken with them and I can assure you that Microsoft's customer service representatives are morons. Do not believe anything these idiots tell you over the phone.
I've been playing my Xbox 360 games in the vertical position for almost 3 weeks now without any problems. Hundreds of thousands of people have also. The customer service representative was an idiot, call back and speak to someone else. - DisposableRob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"customer service representative" < knowledge of your average Best Buy/Circuit City employee.
At least that's my experience when I tried to info from them when I worked at CC. The Nintendo rep was the most knowledgeable and was most willing to give us some freebies, though. I still have a ton of shirts and trinkets from the Gamecube launch. - cool4u2view, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ANY cd/dvdrom will have trouble if vibrated while in the vertical position or changed from the vertical to horzontal while the disc is being read. Doing that to ANY drive can damage the disc inside if it is active. As far as the Xbox 360 not being designed to be vertical that is a lie. If YOUR particular Xbox 360 is having trouble with the vertical position then YOUR lens may have gotten bumped (did YOU drop it or buy it from a store that might have?).
CDROM drives have had these types of troubles in the vertical position for over 20 YEARS. DVDROMS have more data and are more sensitive. In all likelyhood YOU have a bad drive that just happens to work in the horizontal position and not in the vertical like everyone elses on the face of the earth. Sucks to be you :-) - mcbesq, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1All the more reason for independent confirmation through non-anecdotal sources
- horrorpunk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2exactly drgruney...the words themselves say....
"Those aren't my words, but those of a customer service representative."
whatever...you can play in either position...i havent had any problems what so ever
ill believe myself over some "customer service representative" - DisposableRob, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Crap and I just relized the article is talking about phone jockeys. Sounds like someone's tired of their job and just making crap up now.
- drgruney, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't agree with most of the people flaming the 360... but riddle me this MS. Why are the in store demos oriented vertically?
- Grahamdini, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://www.xbox.com/en-US/support/getstarted/system/xbox360/connect-positionconsole.htm
enough said - cheeseron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Its usually a bad idea to buy a console at launch, anyways.
- furashi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Keep on digging Microsoft... Just keep on digging. I love it when they dig their own graves.
- teamparadox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I call ***** on this because it says right in the damn manual you can play verticle and so did J Allard.
- adml_shake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Aren't all the demo xbox 360's that you in see in stores run vertically inside a small plastic shell?
Surely this tests both heat dissipation and the ability to run vertically.
dstart"
The display units have a cooling system in them. Theres a few fans in the one we got all leading to a bigger fan pushing the air on the outside. While I don't really much care for Microsoft I think this is just a case of some MS person blowing smoke out their ass. I'd call them again and see if I got the same answer. Then maybe look towards some legal threats and see what that gets me. - Trepan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Seems to me that it works fine in vertical position. In fact, mine works great. This is a crock of ***** and you all know it. It's just another one of those anti 360 propaganda pieces.
Why are you ***** so intent on trying to piss on the parade of those of us who got a 360 and enjoy playing it? - linkupyo, on 06/02/2009, -0/+0The Xbox 360 is designed to be played in the vertical position but it really does not matter in which position it is played on I have not had any problems with my 360 because i played it in the vertical and horizontal position and it did not affect the Xbox 360s performance in any way.
- Brutal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why do people believe everything they read? Ofcourse it's designed to run games while vertical. This is the stupidest flame ever.
- h0dg3s, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Common sense should tell you that a dvd drive shouldn't spin vertically
- ManiacFive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0From someone who actually works as a CSR i would bet that the guy who told the customer never meant to be used vertically is probably full of ***** and just blagging whatever he can to get the to shut up. Because i work surrounded by asshats like that!
"Still wont work huh, uhhhhhhhh, tried turning it off and on? uhhhhhhh try doing it with the player horizontal... THAT WORKED!? oh oh great, yeah they were never designed to be played vertically, have a nice day."
I'd reckon it was a faulty unit, but the guy doesnt wanna say take it back to your retailer cause he knows they wont have any, and just wants the guy to get off the phone before he gets angry. - carnold, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I had this exact same problem, and neither Microsoft or Walmart would do anything, saying that I should have known better than to play it in a vertical position. I just fixed the disc polishing it with toothpaste. The disc still looks really scratched, but it works now and that's all I care about.
- TrueVox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Just to add my two cents, mine's been vertical sense I got it on the 19th of Nov. (thank you Mountain Dew!), and I've had NO PROBLEMS! However, if the Every 10 Minutes people would SEND MY BLOODY DISC for NFS, I'd be very happy.
- DCWiker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't know about you guys but my 360 plays games in the Vertical position with no problems at all.
- aznboi04k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0m$, what a bunch of morons...
- Orchideous, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0To be honest i think ms Released this way to early, thats why the ps3 has retracted in europe and other places until march now. Ventalate your 360 put something underneath it so the underneath can stay cool
- herassmentalot, on 10/07/2008, -0/+0watever mine is already horizontal i got nuthin to worry about!!
oh and also go check out my site
freemspoints.piczo.com - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It doesn't seem to be designed to play games in any position.
- digg - hellochicken, on 07/14/2008, -0/+0i bought an xbox 360 3 days ago and it ate my only game! the lights around the power button also don't work which sucks.
- DarkShadowXZ, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Oh ***** it was never supposed to be verticle. The tell me something, why the Hell are there little rubber feet on the side of the 360. Clearly for standing it up.
- Jaserakuma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I guess its time to eliminate some rumors. The PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360 are both playable horizontal or vertically. If you move them either way though, you could scratch your CD or ruin your Xbox 360. What is recommended is that if you do want to use it vertically, then use a fan that does NOT hook into your Xbox, but into an outlet (making sure your Xbox 360 isn't being overworked by another product).
When it's all said and done. Users shouldn't parade around the house with their systems, as tempting as it may be. Leave it in one safe, open place, where it cannot be moved.
to confirm this, contact Xbox at 1-800-4MY-XBOX or 1-800-345-SONY - xim23, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Wait, why would Microsoft say that it's not made/designed for vertical use when they put little rubber feet on the right side of the console?
- Zeush8su, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0lame article done by stupid Sony fan-boys who cant read a manual and don't have a 360 and only wanna bitch about how it sux if people actually read the manual it say not to move the unit while it's powered on and a disc is inserted. It makes common sense.NO ***** DIGG cause this is ***** stupid.
Easy fix DONT ***** MOVE THE SYSTEM WHILE IN PLAY!!!!
I'm not a 360 fan-boy cause I have all the systems and plan on buying a PS3/Revolution when they come out. - Otto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why anybody would put a tray drive into a vertical position is beyond me anyway. If the thing was a feed drive where you simply inserted the disc (like a lot of car stereo CD players), then that would make more sense. You still would not want to be shifting it between vertical and horizontal though.
- JFetch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This article is wrong, and so is the comment about the scratched discs at the beginning of it.
- Nobi-Wan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The PS2 sucks at playing games vertically, too. Big deal, just play it horizontally.
- AdamCo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why have it vertical anyway?
All the demo ones at stores that I have seen are all horizontal. - mcbesq, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Once again, are we even sure that the customer service call played out as described?
BTW: This also applies to the "Thomas Hawk" story. Question all anecdotal (i.e. "I was told by Person X that...") stories. They are based on subjective perception and may not be accurately recounted.
Don't just think different...think critically. - LoungeActx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0that's blatantly wrong...because i just got a 360 and there are little rubber "feet" to stand it up vertically. Just like on the underside of the 360 if you wanna use it horizontally. Honestly though...where is the benefit from standing it up vertically?? Doesn't it sit in your entertainment center more nicely if its horizontal? I don't see the point of standing it up vertically...but this article is horribly wrong.
- Nootay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0my xbox 360 is vertical, but the damn thing screws up no matter how you have it. Mine scratches the hell out of disks when is horizontal, but freezes constantly when vertical. ITS A LOSE LOSE SITUATION
- Nessguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is a copy of someone else's comments on the article:
"Just got off the line with a Micro$oft phone representative. They said that the 360 is built for both vertical as well as horizontal game play. She said I can confirm this by the little feet on the bottom of the xbox and the side. I then asked her why so many xboxs were coming back to Micro$oft with issues. Her reply was that the tri-core processors were overheating and frying the circuitry. She also stated that most of the issues with 360’s so far were issues of horizontally played 360s. **That’s the 3rd question asked when you call them to report a broken 360: “Do you have you 360 vert or horz?”. Of course everyone gets scarred, not sure of what the correct answer is. I then inquired about the scratching issues to the disks. She told me there shouldn’t be any scratching when the 360 is completely still. She recommends: “If you need to move your 360 AT ALL, turn it off completely, THEN move it.” By the way, these BRACKETS you guys are running your mouths about, don’t exist for pc drives. You’ll find brackets inside cd devices that have the possibility of movement. (DJ equipment, car cd/dvd players etc.) THE EASIST WAY to tell if a cd/dvd player is designed for vertical use is on the cd try itself. If you attempt to apply a cd to a tray and it falls out, ITS NOT MENT TO BE. As a matter of fact MOST cd/dvd roms made in the last 5 years are vertical compatible. You can see the locks on the tray when you open your rom up. (either little notches or oval movable tabs. IN MY OPINION: Keep your 360 vertical. If you noticed there are 2 air intake vents on your 360. When you place the 360 on its side, your almost cutting 1/2 of its air flow off. IF YOU MUST KEEP IT HORIZONTAL, go to a craft store and get some stick-on rubber feet and put them on the side of your 360. This will keep the 360 6-9mm off your surface. If you don’t believe me, feel how warm/hot the outside of the case gets horizontally, then pop it up vertically. Cant feel any heat on the sides can ya? (well maybe a tiny bit, but a lot less then when it was on its side). JUST DONT MOVE THE 360 WHEN THE POWER IS ON. Even if your not playing a game and your in the dashboard, the cd is still spinning. Remember guys, this isn’t a video game consol anymore, this is a fragile PC made for playing games. Your not dealing with 8bit solid state consoles that you can dunk in water, take apart, dry out kick around and still play for years. BTW thats my xbl gamer tag if anyone wants to hit me up." - mcbesq, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How to handle Customer Service Calls.
1) Ask to whom you are speaking and if there is an identifier number
2) Write down that information, plus the date and time of your conversation.
3) Write notes of your conversation with that person and inform that person that the conversation is being documented.
4) If the first Customer Service Rep cannot help you, ask (politely) if there is a supervisor to whom you can speak. Tell them that you will hold.
5) When you speak to the supervisor, repeat the first 4 steps. - Jaymoon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Got mine 3 days before launch, and it's been verticle ever since...
- KorbenDallas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yea, well My friendz sister who has a cousin that works at Best Buy, says that his brother 'heard' from a customer that the Xbox360 can be hacked into by teenage boys just so they can find out where they can lick camel toads.
- Guspaz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0And so now we take the comments of some low level phone phlunky over the company that designed the thing. We're quite objective, aren't we.
- vhold, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I wonder what percentage of people who click digg actually apply critical thinking to that decision.
- panic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0To all the people saying "Why didn't microsoft design this to stand vertically"... my guess is they did design it to go vertically. They just realized that the few people who are having problems, have their problems fixed when it goes horizontal. Wait for the next revision to the system to come out. The Xbox 1.0 system had several problems of its own.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This story is garbage, and just another crappy story with no value aimed at flaming the 360.
People act as if Microsoft is forcing us to buy their products. If they are, perhaps they should have more in stock? - panic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That's interesting. The funny part is, the eject button (which should have an upward arrow icon on it, as we all know) has it's arrow pointing to the left when horizontal. Based on the appearance of the eject icon, it looks like it was MADE to go vertical.
- iWorks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0um, don't most people usually sit down while playing?
