- hosvos, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16The fact that the PC and the 360 look similar does not make it a rip off... Microsoft took elements from the PS2 and other consoles for the 360 design. Not to mention that they payed designers thousands of dollars for an appealing design. And why of all companies would they take the design from dell.
- phore, on 10/12/2007, -7/+15not really... i think its pretty dumb to just assume it was a rip off.
- phore, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11if you agree, just report as OK THIS IS LAME and it will be off the homepage soon.
- theone3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8No denying it's similar, but it's probably a coincidence. It's gotta be pretty hard to make a box that dosent look like som e other box these days.
Interestingly, one of the reasons they did this design is because it actually fits perfectly on the curvature of the original xBox, (or so i'm told). - ProAm500, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4its digg, thats how it made it...
- fusionnv, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7OMG I see this in Monitors too. ALL The LCD monitors are ripping each other off. They got a stand and a frame.
- llamagod, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3heres a screenshot: http://dessert.llamaz.com/28000.jpg.bmp
notice how many seconds i have to edit? - fatlip, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5this is ridiculous. how did this get frontpaged?
efficient design, thats pretty much all there is to it. - snowboarder, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5they did the "inhale" design design because it breaths better, or better airflow... however you would like to put it. who cares about the xbox design anyways? It sits under your tv and gets dusty... its for playing games...
- guyincognito, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i work on one of those crappy dell's... i highly doubt they wanted to copy that piece of s***
- xample, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4how is that an older style dell, a lot are sold like that still
- Macintosh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Well it's not like Microsoft is innovation, is it?
- llarbkd, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5This has been known since the 360's design was revealed last May.
And anyways it is probably just a coincidence.
No digg. - MrMysterious, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah, no one puts them like that, that is why Dell sells a stand to support it on it's side (that's what the little screw hole on the side is for).
Not to mention that nearly all CD drives will work vertical since they have the little lips in it to keep the CDs put. - ninjathis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I don't think this was done on purpose
but it was a good laugh
+digg - petard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I knew this quite a while ago! I saw these computers at the U of M while visiting my sister, and told my other sister that it looks a lot like an xbox 360, and she said no it doesnt!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2They do look alike, but not enough to call it a rip-off, maybe an inspiration
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Thats about the dumbest thing I have seen, yeah they are exactly alike, the are both rectangular, dumb comparison!!
NO DIGG FOR YOU!!!! - trix911, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2M$ cant even thing of their own ideas anymore
- gamekid, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I see these Dell GXWTFs all the time. They're big in schools and do their job well.
At least if I get a 360 I won't be unfamiliar with the look.
The old phrase "nothing new under the sun" exemplified = Digg. - KevinJ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Interesting find. I say coincidence. MS has some ethics. Right?
- ramped, on 10/12/2007, -8/+9My thoughts exactly! When you see it in person, it really does look very much alike...
- EnricoFermi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3YES I have a gx260 at home and it looks almost identical (dimension wise) to me
Thought I was the only one who noticed. - Batiu-Drami, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Yeah, its not like everyone was saying this when the X360 was first announced, where they? :|
- robbh66, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Not even close to a rip off and reported as lame.
- supremechees, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1someone should do a mod where they put an xbox 360 in that dell case
- Lagomorph42, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Yeah who would steal from dell? But they do look similar. Makes you think doesn't it, but I like the look of the 360 way better.
- OregonTrail, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Yes! They've used GX230s at my school now for a year and I've always noticed this!
- computerdan000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah. If this doesn't get lame'd to death I don't know what I'll do.
- wideawakewesley, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I blogged about this in November last year, nice to see other people seeing the similarity (at last).
http://spaces.msn.com/wideawakewesley/Blog/cns!1p7qzWpz-JLFiMnIbn2gajAg!4967.entry - ateoto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1People did IIRC, when the final design of the 360 was first shown. It's a very attractive design. I don't know if it was intentional or accidental, but oh well. It is what it is.
- iMatt711, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I do agree they look alike however its not a rip off a rip off would have to have a lot more than same form
- krum0786, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My school is filled with those Dells and I've kept telling my 360 friends but they wouldn't listen to me. This'll show 'em.
- JC4P, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just to make this better:
Thos Dell desktops, are the same ones most people at microsoft use... - Alexm920, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm going to agree with snowboarder, the design, as seen in other projects (posted here on digg), provides very good airflow. Yes, the cases are similar, but the headline "Xbox 360 is a Dell Rip-Off" is far too presumptuous.
Just for reference:
http://digg.com/mods/Unbelievable_Aluminum_Case_Mod - AuLKenny, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Maybe no one has noticed the similarities because no one puts the Dell GXs like that? I administrate the school lab and we've got tons of those. What is meant to happen is that the computer lies horizontally on the table and the monitor actually sits on top. The CD tray is not meant to be used vertically anyways and discs would simply fall out upon opening and closing the drive. Lastly, the Dell does not have pads/feet to support it vertically like the ones you can see to support it horizontally so the computer is at risk of falling. However, the 360 could be placed horizontally as well so I see the possible resemblance, but the 360 is actually MEANT to be placed vertically which differs from the Dells.
- ramped, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That perticular Dell model does indeed have feet on the side, and the little Dell logo actually swivels so that it is the right way up when put vertically.
- akira117, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2*Old news + lame*
- Macintosh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0.jpg.bmp? hm?
- Mexrocker, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2hmm... they do look similar but I doubt that its a rip off... these ar the Dell machines we use at my school
- kimc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There's always someone who screams rip-off in cases like this. How would our art and design history look today, if everyone screamed rip-off whenever something reminds of another thing?
- llamagod, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2why would microsoft want to copy dell? especially cross platform copying
- revenant, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2wow... M$ becomes as esthetically un-cool as Dell.. shocker... (not bad un-cool, but not 1337)
- kjd88, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2OMG!!! and they stole the color from apple!!
- Wabem, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1This is defiantly the most lame front page digg....ever. I think the comment that sums up my thoughts was the one by MotionB
"That's about the dumbest thing I have seen, yeah they are exactly alike, the are both rectangular, dumb comparison!!
NO DIGG FOR YOU!!!!"
nice. - cheztir, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2i saw 15 of these at a school this weekend. In person they are very different. Plus, copying occurs in this industry all the time.
- suprfli, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2I agree that this was blogged about quite a while ago. I remember seeing this blogged about when the XBox was first shown. Good link!
Also, I think a lot of people noticed this similarity. I wouldn't call the design a ripoff though.

- mztiklimit, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I can only see similarities, but no 'rip-off'.
