Xbox 360 granted Good Design Award..in Japan!

1up.com — Japan's Good Design Awards are handed out each year to well-designed products across a wide range of industries. Past winners in the game industry have included Nintendo's DS lite and Game Boy micro and Sony's PlayStation 2 and PSP.

    That's quite an accomplish for the 360 considering that the only recent series of consoles so far that haven't won it has been the gamecube.

      Love the console, love the games, whatever, but stellar industrial design it is not. It's a PC trying desperately to look like an iPod, nothing more.

  • jinushaun, on 10/12/2007, -20/+5Unpossible! I busted out laughing the first day I saw it--along with all my industrial design buddies. The XBox 360 is a horribly uninspiring design that reeks of "me-too". Reminds me of Luna (XP) versus Aqua (OSX). It's MS poorly executed attempt at remedying the abomination that was the original XBox.

    Honestly, at times, I wonder if MS actually outsources their design work, or if they just let their programmers and engineers do it all "in-house". I hope the reason MS continues to release such poorly designed products is because the products were designed by committee.

      And please, if you say the PS3 looks better than the 360, you deserve to be clubbed to death by a George Foreman grill.

It's a very elegant and good looking piece of industrial design. Good luck in your “career” as an industrial design. If you can manage to take off you childish fanboy glasses you might do well.

    • MrScience, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Yes, they outsourced the work to professionals. They pulled together a dozen firms to brainstorm, and settled on two firms to create the final design. They even held off showing the executives prototypes, lest they pick an early rough draft to champion.

    I imagine that running alone in the "next generation" console catagory might have helped them win that award. We'll see how well they fare against Wii.

    I like a console I can hear from 3 rooms away...thats how I know it has that baked-in Microsoft goodness. The sound of the gasoline-powered turbine that my XBox 360 uses as a coolant fan makes me glad that it isn't overheating and exploding as it probably will the second that fan breaks down.

People who aren't into the games scene are always asking what it is. Excellent design. Only problem is people are always touching it.
