- antipro, on 10/12/2007, -2/+26Living in your mom's basement is a great way to keep a low profile if you're doing shady stuff.
Don't go bashing moms basements - NielsGamer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6He doesn't care about the 50% of the people that won't believe them anyway. They released the video for the other half.
- pitts395, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6dugg for the summary at the start of the article!!!
For those too lazy to read the entire interview, the very short summary is:
The hack is completely unfit to be applied to a modchip.
Anyone selling a modchip based on this is a scammer.
Trying to replicate the hack without having multiple years of experience at this kind of thing will most certainly brick your 360.
Microsoft will quite probably be able to detect fake firmwares very soon as the cat/mouse game commences so you will get your ass kicked out of Xbox Live for the rest of your life.
Watch out for brickware. Some moron will release one probably. - KissTheRing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6So he says he's done? I hope somebody will pick up his work and continue until we can run unsigned code. I'd love a new Xbox Media Center that can backup my DVDs and encode them in Xvid, DivX, MPEG-4 or H.264 and do it all faster than real time.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6the brickware patch is already circulating on the torrent sites. I wont give away the filename. It's better if you find it yourself. Like my roommate did. Happy hunting
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4i'm always dubious, but i'm inclined to believe he did it.
the proof is on the forums as he said. - chuckythe2651, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Good article! And it should help prove a point. If you don't want hackers going full steam trying to break your code, DO NOT EVER say your product is unbreakable, it's a freakin invitation for these guys to go nuts . They will prove it's not unbreakable, they always do.
- inajeep, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4My only questions is, if he doesn't care if people believe him, why did he release a video at all?
- jesusphreak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3> Trying to replicate the hack without having multiple years of experience at this kind of thing will most certainly brick your 360.
Looks like people won't haveto replicate it becase TeamXecuter is releasing it.
http://www.xbox-scene.com/xbox1data/sep/EEuklluluFrFtUsLdW.php - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3That's why I live in YOUR mom's basement.
- bonoes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Good read. He sounds like a good person. Kudos to him on a temp hack.
- Ninokid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Not very likely I'm affraid, TheSpecialist said MS did a really good job of keeping out unsigned code.
- tylerni7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I love this part:
"Xboxic: Do you have any other hacking projects running related to the 360 or do you consider your job with this machine done now you’ve proven that the “CIA-level security” wasn’t all that much?
Robinsod: No, when this is done I might well sell my 360 and do something else. Get a girlfriend possibly? Chicks love nerds.
Xboxic: Can I quote you on that so one of our interested female readers could pay you a visit on XBH forums?
Robinsod: As long as ’she’ doesn’t turn out to be a 47 year old male management consultant or something." - darthsnoopy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2OSX and linux are unbreakable. (duck)
- NielsGamer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Did you even read the interview? There is no relationship whatsoever between the firmware hack and running unsigned code. As far as these guys know there hasn't been any progression whatsoever since Nov 22nd in running unsigned code.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Yeah, that's just rude. I live in my moms basement!
- Ninokid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Works perfectly here :s, no mirror needed.
- KissTheRing, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2and the 360 has a PowerPC chip, how about installing OS X on it. It would be cheaper than a Mac and pack some horse power as well. Does anyone know how likely this would be if unsigned code could be run?
- oepapel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2""Trying to replicate the hack without having multiple years of experience at this kind of thing will most certainly brick your 360."
Fantastic, then those who DO have the years of experience necessary to perform this hack stand to make a killing from people like me who will gladly pay triple digits for a hacked dvd-rom on Ebay."
This hack was a proof of concept, not a product. This isn't a general purpose hack that will allow you to run any copied game. It's not a "modchip" style hack. Until you can run any copied game (now and in the future) it has no real value outside of a proof of concept. Nobody will be making money off of it, at least in it's current form, no matter what their knowledge and technical level.
That said, it is a very cool hack. - serpentor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"Trying to replicate the hack without having multiple years of experience at this kind of thing will most certainly brick your 360."
Fantastic, then those who DO have the years of experience necessary to perform this hack stand to make a killing from people like me who will gladly pay triple digits for a hacked dvd-rom on Ebay. - LycoLoco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"If I can't play on xbox live with it so be it."
That's what I said about the original xbox. I actually bought a box just so that I could play backups and then later found out about XBMC, and that's what I mainly use it for these days. Yeah, it's fun to play games, but it's even better to have a middleman between my computer and my tv. - Cytlid, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3"In other words, TeamXecuter is getting a lot of attention for doing nothing but announcing that they are going to get a few hundred 360's bricked. MS will love them for the extra console sales though."
That's just ignorant. Team X is releasing a weaponized version of the exploit, which will cut down on bricking. And M$ LOSES money every time console is sold, so I'd doubt there will be any love going around. - topnotchnet, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4its ms' choice to lose $ on every console sold... if i go to a bank and say Ive got this product it costs $800 to make but Im gonna sell it for $500 and make my money back on the back end they will laugh in my face and get security to show me the door.....no one told them to sell it at a loss they choose to roll the dice and they have the money to do so im sure they'll make it back... i just dont understand companies now a days they lose millions or even billions every quarter and they get bailed out by govts and the such because "they employ a lot of people" seems like a messed up business model to me, I go in debt $100 my phones ringing off the hook & my lights are getting cut out meanwhile they can go in debt up to 9 trillion - were livin in a bizarro world
- reconflux, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5do i get a bonus if i keep my mother in my basement?
- uptown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hmm.... Wonder whether Microsoft's XBOX 360 shortage was actually just a delay to see how their device got hacked so they could respond with a hardware upgrade to fend off any weaknesses found in the first few months.
- LycoLoco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1As the other guy said, it's not about proving to the people who call "FAKE" that it could be done, it's to their supporters to say "Look, we did it when Microsoft said it couldn't be done".
- flashmonkey, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2They make up most of the money on selling dev kits and games.
- MikeCampo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3And it's cheap...
- Cerberus047, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5It was an interesting read... not all hackers are those loosers who live in their moms basement like we are led to believe...!
- Polymira, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4I live in my moms attic you insensitive clod!
- Murdats, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1that would be impressive to "...can backup my DVDs and encode them in Xvid, DivX, MPEG-4 or H.264 and do it all faster than real time."
when i last checked, i could be wrong, they could have added it or be selling it as an extra feature, but to my knowledge, the 360 has no sort of time-space distortion abilities to allow things to be processed faster then time itself progresses - zbeast, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1interenting Idea but I think you give microsoft to much credit.
I'm sure they give the system protection there best try.
I'll just wait to buy one after a hacks done. If I can't play on xbox live with it so be it. - andreo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@Serp
I thought that the DVD drive was married to the system. There is supposed to be a serial number that needs to match up in the firmware, kind of like how the hard drive was married to the board in the first Xbox. So just buying a drive off someone won't cut it.
Though I do see the price of earlier 360's going up in value, since this exploit is sure to be fixed in later produced models.
I also see great potential in having your 360 banned from Live. If the 360 didn't cost so much (and wasn't so hard to find) I would give it a try. But I'll stick to renting. I still get to play a ton of games, I don't void any warranties, I don't have to worry about my console getting banned. I don't have to worry about making a stupid mistake and bricking my $400 console. - darthsnoopy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1When you have a 150 dollar console + 50 dollar modchip, modding a console to run XBMC is neat and such. When you have a hard to find 400$ console (hard drive probably neeeded) plus modchip, I'm not thinking this i so cool to 'mod' into a media center. I'd just rather put my 400 dollars into building a slim PC and save myself alot of hassel, while making it easier to run standard x86 based apps. Yet everyone seems so hellbent on running unsigned code on this thing....
As for this hack, which doesnt even get close to unsigned code, the only people that would want it are pirates. Dont give me that backup nonsense, whens the last time you went to a friends house and he showed you how he 'saved his DVD that his cat ate cause he had multiple 'backups'. Bah - NielsGamer, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4TeamXecuter isn't releasing anything special. They're simply facilitating applying the existing hack. The facilities they are releasing will most certainly brick your 360 if you're not experienced at this kind of thing.
In other words, TeamXecuter is getting a lot of attention for doing nothing but announcing that they are going to get a few hundred 360's bricked. MS will love them for the extra console sales though. - turbofan, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4what's a "looser"?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1not opening...
anyone got a mirror ? i wanted to read this. :(
edit :
mirror http://www.xboxic.com.nyud.net:8090/news/501 - crzy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1I saw that file on the torrent sites. Is it legit or just someone tryin to play off to be real thing??
- Ninokid, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Woops, double
