Sony PROMISED near 100% backwards compatibility long ago. MS never made such a claim and even stated before the console launched what to expect. Seems the reactions are about right to me. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -24/+65Yes. True. The XBox target is static. The backwards compatibility is therefore static. This outlook covers the XBox games 'still in the pipe'.
If you are releasing games on XBox, and hope XBox 360 owners might pickup a license or two, then you can easily test the current backwards compatibility on the XBox 360.
This is true, and --ok-- for all concerned. Nothing to see here. As a very happy XBox & XBox 360 owner, Im very comfortable with this. - itseffinkasey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+25Man this pisses me off. I want my xbox games to be able to play on my 360. Am I honestly one of the only ones who is pissed about this?
- kingfoot, on 10/12/2007, -10/+32last i heard roughly 200-300 ps2 games wont work on the ps3, out of an 8000+ library, and that they can fix that in firmware updates. so i would say that's near 100% compatibility from sony... (roughly 3-4% wont work in the ps3, thats hot half bad at all)
- ahatter, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23you would figure it would be since that game was one time bundled with the original xbox (atleast when i got mine it was)
- jacksons98, on 10/12/2007, -4/+23Yes they did promise backwards 100% compatibility.
"At launch, Xbox 360 will be backward compatible with the top Xbox games. Our goal is to have every Xbox game work on Xbox 360. You will NOT need to purchase a new ‘version’ — your original games will work on Xbox 360."

"Microsoft is starting to back away from their previous commitment to make "every Xbox game work on the 360."" - Stratacaster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19I'm still holding out hope for Morrowind to be playable on the 360.
- ShadowMarth, on 10/12/2007, -12/+30This bothers me. I don't own an XBox, but I played it quite frequently with one of my friends. Particularly a third-party co-op RPG beat-em-up game, that we had developed quite good characters on. Of course, when he traded in his Xbox and got a 360, we could no longer play it. It's frankly a pain in the ass.
- Dylan16807, on 10/12/2007, -6/+22Just look at the list of uber-platinum or whatever it is. The very top games. How many are BC? Half? They've done a horrible job with it.
- evil-doer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17http://www.xbox.com/en-US/games/backwardcompatibilityqa.htm
Xbox.com: What criteria do you use in choosing which Xbox games will be backward compatible on Xbox 360? How far back into the Xbox game library are you going to go?
Todd: When we say Xbox library, we mean the entire Xbox library. This ranges all the way from our launch in 2001 up to games that haven't even shipped yet.
Xbox.com: By what date do you plan to have all original Xbox games backward compatible?
Todd: We're continuing to work hard to certify as many original Xbox games to work on Xbox 360 as possible; we'll be adding to the list regularly.
Xbox.com: If you had waited to launch Xbox 360, could you have had all of the games ready for backward compatibility?
Todd: No matter when we were complete, testing would have taken place closer to ship because we're using the final hardware to individually hand certify each game. - pidge, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19I am quite disappointed. I've always loved how Sony has enabled backwards compatibility. I still buy some old PS2 games for my PS3. The majority of my Xbox games are still not on the compatibility list so unfortunately I must keep my Xbox in order to play those games. Bad part on Microsoft. I have all three major new consoles and quite honestly, I am using the Xbox 360 the least.
- Bartboy919, on 10/12/2007, -7/+22I want my Jest Set Radio on my 360 damit!
- DDark, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17Also, from their backwards compatibility FAQ:
"Our goal remains to get every game to be backward compatible. The only things influencing what games we're working on are how popular the title is, and how easy it is to make backward compatible. Several original Xbox games on the list already have Xbox 360 counterparts." - http://www.xbox.com/en-US/games/backwardcompatibilityfaq.htm
You hear that? EVERY game. - geekmansworld, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15This is a lazy attitude on the part of a company with more than enough resources to make emulation work seamlessly. If a guy can build a complete and full-featured emulator for the Playstation or SNES in his spare time, than all of Microsoft can go to the effort of making an emulator for systems they BUILT.
When I think of backwards compatibility, it's to reduce space usage and cabling in my entertainment center. Just because I have a next-gen system doesn't mean I don't want to play last-gen's games. Without some form of backwards compatibility, I'd have to have all sorts of systems hooked up to some massive AV switcher, or I'd have to swap out the game consoles when I wanted to play different games.
Backwards compatibility was the best added value that the gaming console industry ever offered it's all too blindly loyal consumers. Now they want to rob us of it again. Very unappreciative of them. - Rub3s, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12NFL 2K5, the last good NFL game.
- Bahimiron, on 10/12/2007, -6/+18Y'know, there are a few games that I really wish they'd go ahead and make backwards compatible.
Mercenaries. Beyond Good and Evil. Crappy cult classic Breakdown.
But hell, I can't really blame 'em. - DollaDollaBill, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16well that blows.
- Obsydian, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Unreal Championship 2
- VhaidraU, on 10/12/2007, -7/+19If Sony said this about the PlayStation 3 compatibility, the Microsoft Fanboi Diggers would be going ape *****. Oh wait, they already did when Sony said the new machine would have decreased compatibility at first but would increase over time and is already better than the Xboc 360's emulation attempts to date.
- evil-doer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14and another:
"Holmdahl said that the company eventually plans to support the entire catalog for the original Xbox on the Xbox 360."
http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20051112-5558.html
as i said. i remember reading it. its on other pages as well. - aschmack, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Timesplitters.
- jacksons98, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12@joaob I agree, but a lot of people traded in their original xbox so they could afford to get the X360 with the promise that they would still be able to play their old games. That's why people are upset.
- andydumi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13"By the end of 2006, there were 8,571 PS2 titles released worldwide (4,745 in Asia, 1,375 in North America, and 2,451 in Europe), accounting for cumulative production shipments of 1.205 billion units."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Playstation_2#Software_compatibility
With more than 1000 working day 1 in Europe, there is already roughly 50% BC. The big problem will be in Japan, where the loss of the builtin chip may cause a larger difference in BC. Although it remains to be seen at what pace will Sony work on older titles and what number will work already. - Bartboy919, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Psychonauts works as of December.
I want, Jet set radio, unreal championship 1 & 2, Panzor Dragon, all Prince of Persia games and marvel vs. capcom 2. - Willeth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath.
Psychonauts works now. - DollaDollaBill, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14You are soooo ***** right, i wish i could digg you up more. This fan bias towards systems has been lame for so long. why not just admit Microsoft ***** up this time. Everyone would rather have a feature than not have it. Especially when the said they would get a majority working.
- bufar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12When I got my Xbox 360, I was overjoyed. I thought that I could play all the Xbox 360 games that I wanted, as well as all the games that my Xbox-owning freinds had talked about. One in particular, Jet Set Radio Future, I was really looking forward to. However, as soon as I popped it into my 360 I found out that not all Xbox games were backwards compatible. Only Halo and what was more or less an assortment of crap that I couldn't care less about.
Buried out of anger. - totorototoro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11ironically, the Barbie games are in fact backwards compatible, according to the official list :p
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15I was upset because all the games that I kept from my xbox collection minus Halo 2 weren't going to work.
MVP Baseball, Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance, etc.
Freaking stupid.
There's a far better library of games out on the PS2 anyway. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Oh sweet!
I know what I'M doin tonight. - Obsydian, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Great games go beyond most peoples petty thinking of console generations. That's why there is such a big emulation community trying to archive quite possibly every game ever made.
- mibrownfinger, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15Psychonauts
- eastbeast314, on 10/12/2007, -23/+33I don't have a problem with this at all.
- jacksons98, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10@Izacus I posted this above, but since you missed it.
Yes they did promise 100% backwards compatibility.

"Microsoft is starting to back away from their previous commitment to make "every Xbox game work on the 360."" - evil-doer, on 10/12/2007, -6/+14sorry but i remember reading (i dont remember from where) but microsoft themselves saying they will add more and more until the entire catalog of xbox games will be compatible.
- mastercko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8haha, the MS trolls are in fine form on this one. They never promised full backwards compatibility?? That's one of the most convenient cases of selective amnesia that I've ever heard.
And seriously, how can they sleep at night when the Prince of Persia games AREN'T backwards compatible on their system?
The one reason I think that they're deemphasizing it is cuz the perception of BC is all they needed to get in the consumer's head in order to get them to buy a 360. Now that they've been fairly successful at getting their foot in the door (or their box in the room), they figured, "no need to keep this charade going." - totorototoro, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Well, except for Todd Holmdahl, Corporate Vice President of the Xbox Product Group, when he said the company eventually plans to support the entire catalog for the original Xbox on the Xbox 360., and "when we say Xbox library, we mean the entire Xbox library. This ranges all the way from our launch in 2001 up to games that haven't even shipped yet"...you are CORRECT.
- JagoX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8-->"interested in making ---top selling--- Xbox titles backwards compatible."
Right...so explain to me why these games got priority over games that actually sold:
- Cabela's Deer Hunt 2005 Season
- Cabela's Deer Hunt 2004 Season
- Chicago Enforcer
- LOONS—The Fight for Fame
- Sonic Heroes
- Yourself!Fitness
- Barbie Horse Adventures Wild Horse Rescue
- Aquaman: Battle of Atlantis - YouRookies, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Too many digg xbox fanboys in here. You guys are missing out on what....4-5 exclusives that are worth keeping?
This statement is not acceptable no matter which company it comes from. - Ajajadude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I started reading the comments, and I stopped after noticing a trend:
The fanboys slobbering all over Microsoft's unmentionables, regardless of what they write, get dugg up while everyone else pointing out some inconsistencies in reactions between virtually identical PS3 and 360 news get dugg down.
As someone who has, so far, only bought the 360 and not the other 2 (Wii and PS3), I'm kind of disappointed. I've always liked being able to play older games from older consoles on the new(er) console. That's what I loved about the PS2, it seemed every PS1 game I bought (or rented) worked with the new hardware. There are a number of Xbox games I'd love to get for my 360 that I used to play all the time on my friend's Xbox (I never owned one myself).
While I wouldn't necessarily expect Microsoft to devote a good chunk of resources on backwards compatibility, it does show a lack of recognition of the importance of last generation gaming on their older console.
Oh well, time to get dugg down for not being a fanboy... - whiteguysamurai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7if the add panzer dragoon otra, jsrf and all the prince of Persia games, they may then stop.
Not a moment before. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I suppose that's because you've convinced yourself that half-arsed backwards compatibility is "good enough". Or maybe because you don't personally have any Xbox games that don't work on the 360. So, congrats on settling for lowered standards. I'll stick with my Wii and its 100% GameCube backwards compatibility. Nobody should have to think twice before buying an Xbox/PS2 game, "Wait, is this one of the elite chosen games that will actually work with my new system?" What a pain in the butt.
- autocrawler, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9This will probably get me dug down, but stuff like this is one of the many reasons why I prefer PC gaming to console gaming.
Backwards compatibility, you say? Nearly every released game runs on Windows XP, and here I have a triple boot of Vista, XP and Ubuntu, so I can play everything I want to. Plus, there is DosBox for the remaining games that you can't run on Windows. - Barnolde, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5They sell friggin pictures online, can't they just use that free money to make Panzer, JSRF and RalliSport 2 BC?
- loveddevol, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6WTF,
i'd play my old xbox games if MORE where made for it.
hell, i'd still play Jet Set Radio Future, an Panzer Dragoon Orta but noooooooooooo.
the only reason most people don have interest in backwards compatibilty is cuz we don't enough games for it. - dygel, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9The comparisons to Sony's same decision aren't really warranted. You've gotta remember: MS has been working on backwards compatibility issues for a year longer than Sony has.
- standing8, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5This is where Sony and Nintendo(with VC) has the upper hand. Since the original PS, the amount of games accumulated over each of the two PS generations is staggering. You have Metal Gear, Final Fantasy, Suikoden, Hot Shots Golf, Street Fighter, Tekken, Dragon Quest, hell GTA even.(
- EoinOL, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"No, MS said they would add more and more games as the *developers* determined the games were compatible with the 360, or submitted patches that could be applied to make those games compatible. MS isn't trying to make old games compatible; and as system developers, it's not their job."
This is not true. We have multiple confirmations from multiple different developers that backwards compatibility is Microsoft's job. There's no patches that developers have to submit and there's no confirmation process for developers to "determine" that their games are compatible. MS most certainly ARE trying to make old games backwards compatible.
Anyone who remembers the developer of Psychonauts pleading for the game to be made backwards compatible will instantly know that, for some reason, you've made your entire post up. - bacon_skoda, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7The reason I'm not buying a 360 is backwards compatibility.
- standing8, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Sorry for the double post.
This is where Sony and Nintendo(with VC) has the upper hand. Since the original PS, the amount of games accumulated over each of the two PS generations is staggering. You have Metal Gear, Final Fantasy, Suikoden, Hot Shots Golf, Street Fighter, Tekken, Dragon Quest, hell GTA even.(These are off the top of the head and just the tip of the iceberg) Tons of these franchises that span both(and soon to be three) Sony consoles. How many games is that? Being able to play every game from the PS library, add that to pretty much every game from the PS2 library(in due time with firmware updates), playable on the PS3? That's why I always thought it was so premature when people jumped on Sony and claimed they were dead after only3 months of the PS3's release. People have SO MANY PS and PS2 games, games that people still love and still go back to from time to time. If Sony continues this trend through future consoles, they will always sell. I don't care what happens, who snatches exlusivity for (insert game here), or who has more computing power or who has the better graphics, or who has or bla, bla, bla. Based on library of playable games alone, Sony OWNS both Nintendo and MS.
But God bless Nintendo for VC though, if Nintendo can release all old Nintendo, Snes, N64 games AND amass libraries of Sega Master System, Genesis, Saturn and Turbo Grafix 16 on top of that. Man, that's gaming heaven right there. If I could afford it I would get a 360 for sure but for now it's very hard for me not to be more PSWii. I mean with potentially 12 console libraries at my fingertips through just the PS3 and Wii, no way i'm gonna pass that up. -
