- Marfanity, on 10/12/2007, -4/+85That's exactly what I've been waiting for.
- DCstewieG, on 10/12/2007, -9/+51A core would NOT play Xbox games. You need the hard drive. Unless you meant it plays 360 games...
- monahmat, on 10/12/2007, -3/+44-- "most parents listen to their kids and they will probably get what's the "best" and specwise PS3 is the "best""
I don't know a lot of parents that give $600 Christmas presents, not to mention holiday spending has been on the decline. But thats just my opinion. - phpirate, on 10/12/2007, -13/+50Wii60 = $400 (premuim 360) $200 (wii) = $600.
PS3 = $600.
Need I say more? - masonreloaded, on 10/12/2007, -4/+38Think you mean < $250, it's already > $250... nootch.
- rocke86, on 10/12/2007, -4/+35Me too, I'm afraid to buy one now. By lowering the price I would feel safe buying one knowing the price won't drop any more soon.
- itsallgeektome, on 10/12/2007, -2/+30It makes perfect sense, places it closer to the price of a Wii and makes the PS3 look even more expensive (As if it needed help).
- Ezekiel2517, on 10/12/2007, -3/+26This is the kind of thing that would make me consider buying a 360 (or the release of Halo 3, whichever comes first :F). I think they'd steal a lot of Sony's thunder if their price is half that of the PS3.
- szelij, on 10/12/2007, -3/+23An excellent strategy. Side by side, parents would buy the cheaper one as they're both "next-gen" in their minds. A great move. I'll wait till the price drop then.
- strictnein, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21I hope this allows MS to dump their Core system and have two systems: a 20GB and a 60GB.
- dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -4/+21I'm pretty sure if this is true, Microsoft did NOT want it to get out. If they find out who this dude is, his head will roll.
- shad0w, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Microsoft is working on cutting costs, NOT price. People assume that just because the MS is working on forcing the COST of the console down, they are also going to drop the price. This is a poor assumption. Remember that microsoft loses money on every 360.
- TheThirdWheel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Any reason this is any more accurate than the other 100 "sources" which have already predicted a price drop for the $360?
- Quactaur, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16That's garbage. If the console is half the price and showing off games that look about as good (they'll be second gen, so they'll have a significant one-up on the PS3) in comparison, then people are obviously going to go for, or a the very least be swayed quite strongly towards, the 360.
- Sirocco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13I doubt this will happen. With the 360 selling briskly, and the PS3 having a price somewhere up in the stratosphere, it'd be crazy for them to drop the price more than $50, if at all.
If they do take such drastic action, it'd only be because they fear getting steamrolled by Nintendo's latest juggernaut right at Christmas, which is a definite possibility. - Bara, on 10/12/2007, -6/+18What games does the PS3 have that are targetted towards kids? At least MS is trying with Viva Pinata...
But you're right. Those people planning to shell out $500-600 for a PS3 wont buy a 360 no matter what it costs. That's who we call Sony fanboys. But the average gamer, the casual gamer, and most gamers in general will see "PS3 = $500/600 ... Xbox 360 = $300/400 ... Games look similar ... Features are similar ... " The choice is obvious. Only the hardcore Sony fanboys will buy a PS3. Most others (which is the majority of the market) will skip PS3.
Bara out - Lososaurus, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14I think Nintendo is the one who really has to watch out for the 360 if it costs $200(core) by year's end, we all know the PS3 is being priced out of competition.
- charmedguy18, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14That will come first. Halo 3 is set for 2007.
- Desolite, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15very clever move by MS. Sony has got to be sweating their release just a little bit now with all the bad press about the high price, blu-ray, and now this. i love a good competition!
- thunderhammer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13@dclowd9901
Trust me, there is no "source close to Microsoft" this is just speculation about something that is fairly obvious. Let me tell you what a "source close to Microsoft" told me:
Xmas 2007 will see the price drop further.
Xmas 2008 will see another price drop
Xmas 2009 will see another price drop.
Also, this whole "redesigning the hardware" thing has worked really well every time it's been done (slimline PS2, DS lite), a source close to Sony and Microsoft told me you can expect to see that about midway through the life of both consoles. - bman08, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Look at it this way... Buy it now and you get to play for six months for a hundred bucks and also enjoy the security of knowing that, after the price drop, 360's position at the front of the console wars will be all but secured.
Also, that's six months to get your gamer profile cranked up before the x-mas noobs jump aboard. - KyleRayner, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13I could make you a whole list of how many awesome games Im playing right now on my 360, but Im tired of doing that. So how about this, how many games worth playing are out on PS3 right now? How many are exclusive to PS3 and coming out between now and the end of the year?
- aesiamun, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Damn...I bought mine a month and a half ago :) I think I'll have got $100 worth of fun from it by December :)
- Nobi-Wan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9@ estivr
Exactly. Microsoft is cutting down their own costs. The 360 will perform the same that it did...it will just be cheaper for Microsoft to produce. - Cerberus047, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9but the parents will buy their kids a GAME CONSOLE the ps3 is not a game console, remember ;)
- Rousterfar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Won't happen. They don't need to with the price point the PS3 is going to hit at. MS may lower costs, but they will just leave the price where it is at and loose less money on each X360 sold.
Don't expect a price drop till 2007. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+16Sorry dude, no way will the Wii cost $250-$300. Sources indicate its price will be closer to the $200 mark, rather than the $250 mark...and definitely not as much as $300.
- tdogg241, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10This means you'd actually be able to get a 360 and a Wii for LESS than the price of a PS3. Sony's screwed themselves for this generation.
- uptown, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10My bet is that this is a rumor spread by Sony. They spread this rumor, holding off consumers from buying an XBOX 360 for the next 6 months .... potentially leaving more viable PS3 buyers when they release their system and the 360 stays at its current price point.
- tlfillingim, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10i'm just going to wait for Halo 3. i'll have to get a 360 and an HDTV then. that's going to be an expensive game.
- javaroast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7No, redesigning the chip can cut the manufacturing costs a great deal. Sony did this many times with the PS2. Think being able to use 1 chip where there were 2 or 3 before.
- WVUChrisF, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7ilyag: I go to school on full academic scholarship for two engineering degrees and work during the semester and summer. I'm not 'leeching off my parents.' This paycheck is what gives me enough saved money to both pay the bills and buy a new system.
- Nobi-Wan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7@ aptget
Look at it this way...they're still making Xbox 360's and they know the PS3 will be on the market soon. Would they rather
a)Cut down costs by making a smaller chipset and lowering the price to the consumers an additional $80 making it more affordable in a market with two other competing consoles or
b)Keep the price the same and lose the money to potential PS3 buyers who can justify spending "only $100-200 more."
They're still going to lose money no matter which way they go. It's just a matter of how much. If I was marketing for Microsoft I'd rather suffer an additional $80 loss instead of a total $300 loss (or whatever it is) for each console produced. Plus if they release the optional HD-DVD drive at the same time as the PS3.... - adml_shake, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9what part of 2007? If it's around the first part of the year, I'll get a 360. If not...then Wii!!!
- plamoni, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Exactly.
People always complain when the price of a game system drops a year after launch. But they just have to ask themselves, "did I get $100 worth of fun out of this system in the first year I had it?"
Whenever I buy a piece of hardware, whether it be a computer or a game system, I see it as a "price per month" purchase, where the "price per month" is equal to the depreciation of the price of the unit. If I buy a laptop for $1000 and sell it a year later for $400, I ask myself, "Was that laptop worth $50/month?" If so, it was a good purchase. :-) - attackmoose, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10Money talks. Especially that much.
Imagine Halo3 releases the day of PS3 combined with the price drop.
PS3's in trouble. - NSMike, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7It might increase COST initially (due to R&D and implementing new manufacturing procedures), but if the ultimate goal is to drop prices to encourage more sales, the increase in cost will be offset by the increase in profits.
- afx1, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8One reason the PS2 was outselling the Xbox360 was because the XB360 was in limited supply...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Uh, this is kind of lame. The title should be "XBox 360 Price Drop This Xmas?" - it's a rumor by an unproven website, light on the details. It shouldn't be treated as fact. With the FUD that's coming along with it in the comment section, I think most of you are too busy going into fanboy histrionics than you are accurately aggregating news. Pathetic.
- The_Wallbanger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@ frishack
Expect Halo 3 to be released Q4 2007. They need the extra time to code the game in preparation of LIVE Anywhere. Expect PC vs 360 matches, and more robust player statistics tracking. - coyotejones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@ieatrocks
Your statements that HD-DVD is the open-choice are patently bogus, it is you that doesn't read enough. They are both heavily DRM'd technologies, both depend on _AACS_, which defines ICT and encryption for BOTH standards. In the short-term neither Blu-ray nor HD-DVD are implementing it, fearing it will stunt adoption. FYI There are also dual-format (regular DVD HDorBD) specs for BOTH Blu-ray and HD-DVD. HD-DVD has no apparent advantages except cost [in the short term], BD wins in storage capacity, and Blu-ray has additional BD spec for revoking keys (it will be curious to see how that actually works in practice). The main point is, expecting that one has a significant advantage over the other FOR CONSUMERS is naive. - Dhalgren, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6An official announcement before Nintendo announces their price would be awesome (if stupid on Microsoft's part). If the 360 is selling for $250 and $300 then Nintendo would have to sell the Wii at $200 or less.
BTW, how is Wii not in the digg spelling dictionary? It's used so often these days... - Hatefull, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6yeah, this should be titled "Xbox 360 Price Drop This Xmas?", the way it's titled misleads me to think it's official, so I click and find out it's another analyst. no digg.
- EochaidRiata, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6"If the console is half the price and showing off games that look about as good"
Exactly. Gears of War and Forza 2 will be out and in the demo machines before the PS3 launch. People are not going to be blown away by Warhawk and Gran Turismo 4 with a texture pack. - hchaudh1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@ieatrocks
BD is the proprietary, drm'd, and incompatible choice. -- So is HD-DVD That was not my point.
HD-DVD is open. -- No it is not. Just like BR, it runs on MS proprietery formats.
dual mode discs in HD will also play regular dvd content -- So will BR
there is also no ICT to prevent 1080p playback -- Yes there is. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ICT
BOTH disc formats require microsoft's VP1 codecs -- BR also plays MPEG - 4
Yes you are right that PS3 performance numbers are theoretical as of now. So, a technical discussion does not bear any discussion. But there have been numerous articles about how the Cell processor is better at floating point ops and for streaming media. There are some issues with its branching logic, but from what I have read, its not too hard to code for that. But till the PS3 is out, its moot to talk about its performance. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7I have a strong suspicion that the Halo 3 release date is the PS3 release date. They have had more than enough time to make that thing, and they know that it's their ace in the hole. It's what I am waiting for, but I won't complain if there are a few price drops along the way.
- adml_shake, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5because you don't have to be a genius to figure out that MS is trying to undercut sony at X-mas this year. If they do drop the price sony will have that much of a harder time getting their systems out the door. I have a feeling that (if this is true) theres gonna be a lot of 360's and Wii's under peoples x-mas trees this year.
- KyleRayner, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6"Microsoft needs to come clean about the hardware defect problems and when people can count on buying a 360 and not have to replace it once, twice, six times like people currently are having to do"
There are no more bad 360s than there were bad PS1s or PS2s. All you hear is the internet vocal minority. I havent had a single problem out of mine at all, and nobody on my Live friendslist has had any problems out of theirs. - KyleRayner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Youre an RPG fan, but you cant find a game to play? The hottest RPG on the market right now is on 360! Go get Oblivion NOW (and the expansions on Live), and if you havent played Fable, you can get Fable:Lost Chapters (expanded director's cut) used for about 10 bucks now.
Edit:Oh, you said Final Fantasy-like games. Those arent real RPGs. Go dust off your DS and play the classics. Even the new Final Fantasy isnt Final Fantasy-like, its more like a MMO it seems. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Saga ran out of money MS is not runing out of money any time soon.
