- mrfreeziexp, on 10/12/2007, -2/+77The memory card has it's uses, even if you have a hard drive..
- cool8man, on 10/12/2007, -19/+63Sounds like nonsense. Why would they drop the core pack when they just made a huge deal at GDC about introducing a 512MB memory card?
- Akaji, on 10/12/2007, -3/+44This is good to hear. I wonder if Sony will respond in kind, or allow the price gap to widen further?
- eMximeR, on 10/12/2007, -4/+43This isn't definite even though the title makes it seem it is.
- kcpwnsgman, on 10/12/2007, -3/+40how much is the 512mb memcard going to be? they should just allow USB drives to act as memory cards, much like the Wii and SD cards.
- DiggTheWii, on 10/12/2007, -3/+37Microsoft would be genius to drop the 360 (Premium) to $300.
Why?
1) That puts the gap between the 360 and PS3 at $200-$300. I think Sony will have a hard time moving them at that gap.
2) That puts the gap between the 360 and the Wii at just $50. With an awesomely established catalogue, Nintendo would have trouble justifying moving a system that has essentially two must own games, one of which is in the package.
Other facts that point to a price drop:
1) The 360 has been out a year and a half. How many people would have waited this long to buy one at the LAUNCH price?
2) They introduced a new DVD (made by Ben-Q, who do it inexpensive style) drive and are switching to 65 nanometer processors. This means a drop in productions costs, which in theory could mean that they could pass the savings on to the consumer.
I have to say that I'm a little partial to the pricedrop, though- if they do drop prices stateside (even if just by $50), I will be line the next day. - Barnolde, on 10/12/2007, -9/+38The Core really was the worst decision ever, sure took them long enough to finally bring out the REAL Premium system.
- mikew101, on 10/12/2007, -3/+28If they lower the price of the premium system in the United States I will buy one.
- Nezzari, on 10/12/2007, -2/+26@piper999
How is it obsolete? You are not losing any features. Using you logic, practically everything you own is obsolete since there is always something better out there. - NielsGamer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24Because it happens all the time to every product that stuff gets cheaper and/or more luxurious as time progresses?
- rocke86, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22Actually the core was brilliant. Making parents and other unknowing buyers think that they are getting a deal only to later want to buy a hard drive for $100 more plus other accessories that would of cost a whole lot more than the premium.
Is is smart yes, is it manipulative yes. A very Microsoft way to get more money. - DocNo, on 10/12/2007, -4/+22I just don't get the excitement over HDMI - it brings nothing new to the table. My component cables work just fine.
Want to talk essential? A bigger hard drive! That's something to get excited over... - ImWatchingYou, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18I own a 360, but I dugg you down because reading your comment makes my eyes bleed.
- KillerJ59J, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17gconeen: No retard. That was a special Amazon was doing, Microsoft has nothing to do with Amazon's marketing stunts. They gave people a vote on five outrageous deals and the people picked the xbox 360 to sell 100 for $100.
- Ocelot13, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17what about cellphones that get outdated as soon as you sign that dotted line?
- Paroparo, on 10/12/2007, -5/+18Is it really? It wasn't according to the last stats I checked. Even if it did, it's to be expected. Didn't the original PS outsell the PS2 for the first year of the latters lifetime?
- NielsGamer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Uh, you claim you read the source, but he explicitly states:
- Core is being dropped, confirmed by store manager
- MS is making the 299 price point possible on purpose. Why would other stores not follow suit, thus making the 299 price standard?
- Black HDMI machine is coming
"Damit darf mit großer Sicherheit davon ausgegangen werden, dass die Xbox 360 Premium spätestens ab nächster Woche bei allen Händlern zum Preis von €299,00 zu kaufen sein wird."
means:
"It's safe to assume that the Xbox 360 Premium will be available at all stores for 299 euro by next week at the latest."
Also good to keep in mind is that Xbox-Archiv has had to pull *correct* rumors before by MS' request. - stubadub, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Just about anything is clearer than composite. I don't notice a difference on my tv when going from component to DVI.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14The Core, a low-price entry point into XBox 360 gaming.. is a GREAT idea. The machine was a great way for people to get a great gaming system, without haveing to shell out a pile. OPTIONS are a good thing.
- CyrusG, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13I might be committing digg suicide, but why is everyone so excited for Super Smash Bros.?
I'm not saying the hype is completely baseless, but I'm surprised that it has become the most (or close to it) anticipated game of the year.... and please don't say Solid Snake.
And just in case you haven't buried me already: Linux sucks. - KMartSheriff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Thanks for sharing?
- tonich03, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Rumors have been around for 2 months.
- Bahimiron, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Very surprising.
Microsoft has always insisted that the Madden/GTA crowd was always a big focus for them, which is why they'd always stand by the Core model.
Frankly, I would have assumed they'd axe the Premium when 'Zephyr' came along and keep the Core.
Either way, ***** better have a way to transfer data from my 20 GB HD over to a nice fat new one without me having to buy a bunch of goddam cards or some ***** dongle. - Zamfir, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Welcome to digg! Cheers!
- iluvatar, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12The core wasn't the bad idea. Not making the hard drive standard in all models was one of the biggest mistakes they've made.
- tendonut, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Link please clinch.
Typically, console manufacturers don't cut their system price when they are still losing $300+ per sale at their current pricepoint. Microsoft has finally started turning out a profit on their consoles ($70 something I think), so it made sense for them to do it. Nintendo, considering they came out the gates already turning up a profit, could easily follow suit if they felt it was necessary. Sony is just screwed regardless. - rstarr, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9We already knew Halo 3 was coming in the fall...even Bungie said that and it's on a new teaser poster.
Granted fall extends until December 20th (or 21st, I always forget), but I some how doubt MS would push it that close to holiday. - jrieth50, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7@Zam - you are a hype guzzling moron. Not only does a quality set of component cables compare equally to HDMI, but your analog analogy is even worse if you're even brushing on audio. Analog audio IS superior to digital, everything you've ever HEARD in your life has been analog, even if it had to be converted from your sweet HDMI cable for you to hear it. Guess what happens during conversion? Loss. HDMI offers zero benefit in exchange for higher priced equipment so that they can enforce the token restraint on HDDVD or Blu-Ray as well as content flags on your television that they've been working on pushing through the FCC for like 3 years.
- KMartSheriff, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9no care ever?
- MackPrime, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12HDMI is not really necessary. Keep that port for your fancier DVD/Blu-Ray/HD-DVD players. 360 works fine through VGA.
- EmileVictor, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Yes, we have single handedly cured cancer, zombified dogs and given mice amnesia!
- PYREX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6roughly translated through economic scale that means
NEW PRICES in USD:
Premium $299
HDMI 120GB $399 - TheMikey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Really? Because in Canada our PS3s went from $659 to $699. Does this mean that they'll be going back down? To an even more reasonable price? I couldn't believe it when our Sony Rep (I work at London Drugs) told us that the prices were going to change in the next week and to inform our customers about it... I just assumed that the change would be a price drop... how foolish.
- Sparkio, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Iiiiiiiinteresting... Halo 3 vs. Super Smash Brothers Brawl this christmas? It's like a gamer's wet dream. (the answer is both, of course :P)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10It's called a receipt; if you bought it a month ago, depending on where you bought it, you may still have time to return it.
- jacksons98, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I agree with what you said except, Surprising?? Upgrade or else that's the Microsoft way.
- LACHRYMIST, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Can anyone tell me when a system began to recoup production costs within the first year of release? even if it is only $50....
- Ignignokt01, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I heard this rumor a few months ago from some game bloggers who chatted with Microsoft dudes. I didn't believe them at first, but these are the same exact details I heard... soo....
- Segitz, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10This is interesting, the 360 can already be bought for 299€ at Saturn here in Germany. (Yes, the premium package).
But I still call BS on this one, as "reliable sources" always sound fishy and are most of the time simply made up.
And, reading the german article, it states nothing about a price cut, but rather that retailers (as stated above) lowered the price on their own.
http://www.xbox-archiv.de/?p=5779
It also states, that german retailers pay about 350€ per package and that MS sponsors them for advertising so the price of 299€ can be made feasable.
He ONLY states, that can can (I quote translated) be "concluded" (es kann davon ausgegangen werden...) that MS will lower the price, not that they WILL lower the price.
The only thing he had from his "reliable" source were those HDMI 360s!!
The other stuff I did not read! - EtherGnat, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Google is your friend: http://www.google.com/search?hl=&cat=&meta=&num=&ie=utf-8&q=currency+conversion
- fallenone05, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'm waiting by the fence, watching carefully Microsoft and Sony to decide which to purchase...It pays to be patient
- EtherGnat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4You can't do a direct price conversion, because consoles are more expensive in Europe. I believe the PS3 is launching for €499 (20GB) and €599 (60GB) in Germany. Even at €450 (the high end of the price spectrum quoted) the 360 would still be a good chunk cheaper.
- jrieth50, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6@Lach - sure, at least the last 3 systems by Nintendo including their current one. That clear things up?
- AndrewDB, on 01/10/2008, -0/+3Sucks, I just bought my premium. :(
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6wow i stopped reading the comments after the first 10. digg has turned into myspace.
- Darksaber11, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@bahimiron
Doesn't the 360 have a RJ-45 port? - Splitt3rxx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4hell yeah, $300 premium 360 FTW.
- Darcy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2So what's your suggestion to MS then? Do you want them to keep the console at the same price level through-out its lifetime? Don't you want them to add extra functionality?
- ummcordell, on 02/03/2009, -1/+3The core system is a huge rip-off, unless you're just buying it to play the Burger King games.
- DEEP_NNN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2About the only parts of this rumor that have any chance of being correct are the Premium price drop and elimination of the Core system. All the rest of it is fluff. Something to keep us readers on their site a little bit longer. There doesn't seem to be any ends, to which gamer sites will go, to attract attention.
The story is lame and contrived. -
