As I said above, I will be proceeding under the assumption that the IT mentioned in the above quote is motion controls, since that is what we are talking about. Nintendo released onto the market a product with motion controls. Microsoft observed there success and began talking about maybe possibly implementing motion controls. Then they said it is OK, not something they are ashamed of (this is the imitation, or rather MS responding to the perception there of), because really they thought of it first, or at least before Nintendo announced it. I am not saying this is impossible, but at this stage of the game I am mistrustful of MS. The have a history of beating their competition with shady business practices and by stealing ideas and claiming innovation. The gaming division has done some excellent work, and at times seemed like a completely different company from the MS I love to hate. I would be sorry to see them go down this road, but I would not be surprised.
"When in 2004 Iwata-san said "customers do not want online games." is Nintendo now to be maligned because XBox 360 has executed XBox Live, GamerTags, TrueSkill, Achievements and all the rest so excellently? No. These companies are competing. Each has managed some innovation, who ever is the most nimble will "win" in the end."
No, your analogy fails. For Nintendo to be guilty, or appear guilty, of the same thing, they would have to now announce Nintendo Online TM, PlayerTags, RealTalent, and Accomplishments. Then they would need to say, "We are not embarrassed by the similarity of our product to MS's, because we thought of it first, they just got it to market more quickly." - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=158792
"we've got a few tricks up our sleeve as well to be able to do that. It's not something that we're going to be shy about, and it's not something that we're not painfully aware of that needs to be changed by this holiday. That has been the strategy all along, and we'll be making some more announcements in the coming month or two." - Not shy about imitating because they have been working on it for years in advance? - wageslaven, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@wiinii
"Not shy about imitating because they have been working on it for years in advance?"
Where in the following statement does "imitating" appear?
"we've got a few tricks up our sleeve as well to be able to do that. It's not something that we're going to be shy about, and it's not something that we're not painfully aware of that needs to be changed by this holiday. That has been the strategy all along, and we'll be making some more announcements in the coming month or two."
It very well could be the case that Microsoft has been developing or planing such a thing for a long time -- it is YOUR re-invented reality that suggestes that this would be 'imitation'. Here is a little more from that article:
"I've always realized that was the right thing for Nintendo ... to be successful in this next generation. And it was always going to be a challenge for us. So, we have plans. This does not come as a surprise. Our strategy has been laid out for us years in advance, and you're going to see some of that this next holiday and beyond."
What is the big deal? MS says wiimote was _critical_ for Nintendo this generation. That Nintendo is competition, and that MS will respond. Where is this "imitation"? No.
When in 2004 Iwata-san said "customers do not want online games." is Nintendo now to be maligned because XBox 360 has executed XBox Live, GamerTags, TrueSkill, Achievements and all the rest so excellently? No. These companies are competing. Each has managed some innovation, who ever is the most nimble will "win" in the end.
Hell, there is motion sensing right now with XBox Live Camera:
