- smiley2billion, on 10/12/2007, -3/+29IPTV can work with all Xbox360s. Obviously, you would have a lot more recording time on one with a 120gig drive.
Also, you won't just "get" IPTV, your service provider (Comcast, AT&T, etc) is going to have to support that feature. - thatsmyaibo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+26So this story is announcing the announcement?....thanks for keeping us in the loop.
- Konrad9, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20Or they'd be tacking on $150+ extra for a feature a very small amount of people want built in.
- NeoCortex, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18Hell, just let me stream more than WMV files without a thrid-party program. If they can let me use Windows Media Player to play my DivX files through my 360, I'll be thrilled.
- apothekari, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18Ummm yeah all this is cool and all but,Introducing yet another sku?
Drop the core,Reprice the Premium to core and price Elite as new premium or 50.00 extra or so.
AND MAKE DAMN SURE THE NEW PRODUCTS ADDRESS THE REPAIR ISSUES!! - rocke86, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17exactly, I don't want a more expensive 360. I want a premium for $299. I should of got one last spring for $399, but since I waited for a price drop this long might as well wait longer.
- rowlodge, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17dont get more expensive...get less!
- reddevil3, on 10/12/2007, -6/+18Sorry, but $480 without Wifi and a play-and-charge kit is still too much.
It says that the premium will still be $399...I hope it drops to $299 in the Summer/Fall, then I'm definitely getting one. - victorc26, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10@lakush:
"360 already rocks, but this would be ideal:
1. Redesign a more compact console
2. A more efficient cooling system, and/or quieter fan
3. Integrated HDDVD
4. Integrated WiFi
5. Priced at or less than that of PS3
Is this too much to ask?"
They're already going to have number 2 covered. Since the whole point of using 65nm chips (Other than being cheaper to produce) is the fact that they will run cooler and consume less energy. - revenge7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Full article: http://blogs.mercurynews.com/aei/2007/03/exclusive_microsoft_to_announce_the_xbox_360_elite.html
- monkeyflingpoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I disagree, at&t is already trying to compete with comcast on price, this will most likely benefit all consumers.
- Konrad9, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Of course you need the hard drive to watch TV.
The 360 doesn't have the software to run it out of the box, and I doubt you're going to be recording too much on the memory cards. - steevo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5IPTV does not get tacked onto your Cable bill it would be instead of you cable bill, MS IPTV is a competing product to the Cable companies for the Telco's liek AT&T
- GunbladeVIII, on 10/12/2007, -6/+11$479? ENTIRELY too expensive; I'd rather get Blu-Ray for $20 more (that is assuming the 20 GB PS3 exists anymore) and put an old 120 GB hard drive I've got lying around from upgrading my old PC into that PS3. Microsoft should be lengthening the price gap between them and Sony's ridiculously expensive machine, not narrowing it!
Sony gets ridiculed for a $499 gimped PS3, but MS doesn't for this? Come on, where's the MS-hating Digg I know and love? - 1jaxstate1, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7How do this IPtv thingymagig work? If I have to pay a cable company extra, forget about it.
- slappynutz, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7How does Microsoft giving you choices make the PS3 irrelevant?
For $20 more with the PS3 you get Blu-Ray high-def movie playback, a significantly quieter-operating optical drive, and free online gaming (it's nowhere near as good as Xbox Live, but it's got room to grow and it's free). It's $499 for the 20gb version of the PS3 btw.
Of course you get a smaller hard drive, but Sony gives you the choice of upgrading to any laptop drive you wish, and with an adaptor you can use any standard sata drive you wish as well. From what I've heard Microsoft is going to be charging upwards of $200 for the 120gb drive separately. They should be subsidizing these drives to get more people to pay for premium content ... instead they seem to be gouging their consumers.
I have very little stake in the format "war" as I already own and enjoy all three current consoles. But to say that what you get for only $20 more for the PS3 is irrelevant seems a little hard to believe.
Personally, I think Microsoft is missing a major chance to put the screws to Sony here. If I didn't own a console and saw what the PS3 offers I'd have to think long and hard about the "Elite" 360. - zirzop, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9What is this new "movement" about "choices?"
A guy posts saying "$20 more and you get a Blu-Ray player.. (And also Wi-Fi)" and people still go like:
"Oh, I like choices... I like the choice to not to choose to pay $20 more for a $600+ technology (Stand alone Blu-Ray player)..." Microsoft is sooo good by not forcing me a $20 more cost for a Blu-Ray / HD-DVD drive...
But what I do not understand is, why do not the same people want the "choice" to use any harddrive they want? Why do same poeple do not want the "choice" of using any bluetooth device with their consoles?
I am truly having though time understanding XBox loving crowds rationale... - CrAkaRJax, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5you are all april fools.
- Lynxpro, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4
While I agree with your sentiment, unless that old hard drive you have laying around is a 2.5" model, it ain't gonna work in your PS3. But yeah, the easy "modding" that you can do with a PS3 via the hard drive is something that Microsoft should take notice. Hell, consumers should definitely take notice. That along with the added costs of a proprietary headset for Xbox Live versus being able to use the same Bluetooth headset you have for your cell phone which will work with the PS3 for their online services. Being able to use non-proprietary memory cards on the PS3 - as opposed to the 360 - is something else that should be considered...
Sony really needs to get a PS3 down to the $399 level...and quick. Maybe by dropping the Emotion Engine (like the European models) and bundling a wired SixAxis controller - instead of the standard Bluetooth model - might help do the trick. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5IPTV will be somewhat useless unless it's significantly cheaper than normal cable.
I'm talking $20 a month for everything, much like Vonage was to overpriced (and outdated) landlines.
Unfortunately, if it's left up to cable companies, no way in hell they'd drop prices. - VickyB, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6So the majority of Xbox Digg fanboys slag off Sony any chance they get but MS comes along with the second version of the XBox just after 1 year and still it can't beat the PS3. What happens to the 10million installed user base who've already bought an Xbox 360? If a certain percentage want to upgrade - they've had to pay out for two XBox's and still no integrated HD-DVD because they know that Blu-ray is 3-1 ahead? What aren't you all slagging MS off?
Sorry - but you can Digg me down as much as you like but this smacks of pissing all over the established user base. I'd rather sink my money into 1 PS3 and get Blu-ray playback and the ability to swap out the HD Drive. - rheaume, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"your service provider (Comcast, AT&T, etc) is going to have to support that feature"
Or in my case, our service provider (Shaw) is not going to support that feature - Zero2aHero, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Talk about a ***** headline, here is a quote from Kotaku....
"I suspect that this new model will hit in April, with official word coming as early as next week. I also wouldn't be surprised that if consumer interest shifted to the newer model, that Microsoft drops the price on their current models by this holiday season. Brian Crecente"
Brian Crecente saying when he expects an announcement to come is now considered the same thing as the actual announcement itself?
Marked inaccurate. - Cyber_Akuma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Since I have a 360 already, im just interested in hearing if the bigger HDD will be sold separately, if older Xbox360's can use all of it, and if it ll be decently priced once its out.
- MouseCircus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I agree with you; this thing is overpriced.
But here's the difference. Unlike the PS3, you can still find the much cheaper versions of the 360 all over the place. If the price bothers you that much, then go with either the core or the premium. I'm no AV whore like a lot of you are, but is no HDMI really that bad?
And I don't really know why everyone is complaining about it, either. Enthusiasts are the ones that continually requested features such as HDMI, and now that Microsoft has fulfilled that request, you all complain? You guys are already used to paying a premium for technology you don't really need; either buy it or don't. - isewise, on 10/12/2007, -8/+10Say what you will about the PS3, but I'm sure the next version of it wont be more expensive than the original one. Sony is trying their best to get that thing down in price.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8
That's the good thing about Microsoft. They give you a choice. You can either buy the obsolete Core version or the obsolete Premium version or the Elite version that comes with a $180 120 GB HDD. Yes, Microsoft really listens to their customers by giving them what they want - a choice. I also like the choice of not having to buy WiFi (something included in the Wii and DS). Yes, thank you Microsoft. - nohkul, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I agree with formulaone: "Excuse me, but WiFi and Play and Charge kits are "choices". And you shouldn't have to pay for choices." My 360 connects to the home network/internet using a LAN cable, and I prefer to use the Quick Charger cradle instead of plugging in with the play and charge kit to recharge my batteries. If things went reddevil3's way I'd have built in WiFi and a play and charge kit I don't use but had to pay for.
- lakush, on 10/12/2007, -9/+11360 already rocks, but this would be ideal:
1. Redesign a more compact console
2. A more efficient cooling system, and/or quieter fan
3. Integrated HDDVD
4. Integrated WiFi
5. Priced at or less than that of PS3
Is this too much to ask? - steevo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Network providers like AT&T
- jessestay, on 01/21/2009, -0/+1Anyone know if Vista Media Center will get IPTV support? I prefer to have one central media hub and stream my TV to the TVs I want to access my media through. If this is the case, I have no need for the Elite (well, HDMI is definitely a plus). I'd also love to see the ability to remotely download Xbox Live Media content to a remote Media Center PC. With this I no longer have the need for a large hard drive on the Xbox.
- Boomh4u3r, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I'll get one eventually...I like black better than creme or whatever color mine is right now
- k3nt, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Who is going to provide the IPTV content?
- Radan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Personally I will gladly pay those extra €100 for an HDMI port. As it is now, I can't even use my freaking surround system. Also, I really hope that they will finally build in the power brick. Good god I hate that thing. It's big, it's ugly and it doesn't even match the color palette of the rest of the system.
- adammharvey, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5i still like the white one goes well with all my mac stuff
- SeaICIubber, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The power brick is behind the TV so why worry what colour it is?
- rlg420, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Don't forget that Microsoft has said you need fiber-to-the-curb.
http://www.xbox360fanboy.com/2007/01/09/rumor-xbox-iptv-may-not-be-so-grand/ - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Excuse me, but WiFi and Play and Charge kits are "choices". And you shouldn't have to pay for choices.
- smiley2billion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Negative.
MS IPTV is middleware that your current provider would use to get you cable service over IP packets instead of your current analog coax set up. It could be tacked on, or you could opt to go with an IPTV only setup, kinda like when "digital cable" was starting to come out. - smiley2billion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yes, it will be sold separately, and in a color to match your existing 360.
- DryvBy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If only they could make a device that doesn't break after 6-months to a year. Work on that, Gates, and quit begging for Mexicans to come work here. Moron.
- MouseCircus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Actually, the 120GB hard-drive is rumored to cost under $200. I could be wrong, though, so feel free to correct me.
And I do agree with you. Someone who is interested in purchasing a media-centric console should pay $20 and go for the cheaper PS3, rather than the 360 Elite. The 360 has awesome media capabilities, but because of the simple fact that the PS3 includes Blu-ray, I'm sure most, if not all media-addicts would choose it over the 360.
I guess some people might prefer IPTV capabilities over Blu-ray, but you have to rely on your cable provider for the service, and not everyone has the bandwidth for it. The IPTV market is relatively smaller than the HD market. - shit, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6gxcdesign: "I personally don't think it will be a huge hit"
Really?
http://digg.com/users/gxcdesign/news/dugg/gaming_news - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3
It's basically a premium service you'll need to need to tack on to your already high cable TV bill. But, IPTV, like WiFi and HD-DVD are choices so you don't need to pay for them if you don't need them. I like choices. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5It's not a movement. It's an obvious joke about how Microsoft 360 fanbots use the absence of features in their console to attack the price of a console with features - the PS3.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2
Brian Crecente has brass and crystal balls that see into the future. - mwmwmw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't understand what all the anger is about. If you don't want HDMI or IPTV or a larger hard drive, then don't buy the Elite. The Elite won't really add much to a person that just wants to play games or download an occasional media file (me). Wait until Microsoft drops the price of the Premium (which will probably happen a short time after the introduction of the Elite), that's what I'm going to do. It would be great if Microsoft dropped the price of the premium to $299 but I think $350 will probably be more likely. Then again, with all the discounts that are out these days it will probably be significant cheaper than $299. Remember several months back when you could have gotten a Premium for 299 (the Microcenter deal)? That's where my brother got one.
- steevo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1No you don't need a hard drive to watch MS IPTV it picks up a live stream there is not buffering
- zirzop, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3@formulaone
I was not actually referring your particular post... But reading again, I did actually refer to your sarcastic post...
Anyway, good one... -
