No big deal... - jblade, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16Anyone wanna post some comparison screens? Any noticeable changes in detail over VGA compared to Component?
- xenovis, on 10/12/2007, -8/+21Can we please get a DVI or HDMI digital video connection for the 360 already? Owning two 360’s myself I know I need an HDMI cable. I am beginning to grow tired of the Microsoft canned answer of “you don’t need HDMI for HD, or to display 1080p resolutions”. This is indeed correct for an estimated ~ 5% of all currently available HD TV’s that can output 1080p. Nearly all televisions that support 1080p must do so over a digital signal. Neither VGA nor Component are digital, they are analog, and susceptible to signal loss. Microsoft is releasing a HD DVD player for the 360 that can only output the maximum video quality on less than 5% of all available HD televisions, doesn’t it make sense to finally release a digital video connector for the 360 to accommodate those of us stuck in the 95% ownership of HD TV’s capable of 1080p through digital connections only?
- josegutz, on 10/12/2007, -5/+16I love the Burger King games...
Now you can have it your way...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Sneak King is awesome, no matter how repetitive it gets.
But Pocket Bike Racer is insultingly stupid. Literally half the games I played online ended in the host somehow dropping all the players, forced to finish the race by himself. That's of course, assuming you could start a match. See, when you start loading an online game, other people can still join the game lobby... only they can't join the game, and the game won't start while there's extra people in the lobby.
And don't get me started on the AI. I defy to to lose in battle mode. The AI is just that dumb.
(This comes from somebody who painfully got all the achievements, so I gave it an honest try) - rick2k, on 10/12/2007, -6/+13? As long as you have a TV that isnt ancient then you CAN do all HD over component, you just need a TV with HDCP support
Microsoft are right.. you dont need HDMI
edit: to add to that i think its the other way around.... 95% of tvs DO take HD via analogue connentions eg component - 1nd1g0, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Any one know what changed with the recently played games list?
- afex, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7ric is correct, there's only a small gap where you could get a tv that did 1080p but w/ no HDCP...either your tv is old enough to not be able to do 1080p or its new enough that HDCP is included...you'd have to be one of those guys that said 'tv's with 1080p? i'll take 3!' without waiting a bit to find out what happens with the tech
- daedal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Most of the proxies are blocked at work, anyone mind posting the list of changes?
- jblade, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I as much as the next user would like a digital signal output, be it HDMI or DVI, but it simply is not needed. Think about your CRT monitors, and the resolutions they could display on VGA. The VGA standard has more then enough room to pass a 1080p signal, without loss. If you have any complaints, it should be that MS should release a higher quality cable(although imho the cable is already pretty good quality)
- Doghound, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@Reidtheweed01
We know you can do 1080p over component. But that wasn't the question. His question was whether or not his TV supported 1080p through the component and/or vga inputs.
Some TVs only supported up to 1080i through those two inputs. - DTJunkie07, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5i have a Sony sxrd 1080p wega engine TV (why does all that rhyme??) but i don't know if it supports 1080p through the VGA input. All other inputs are a max of 1080i and of course there is the two vacent HDMI slots........any help on this would be greatly appreciated.
- MCHampster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Why can't we just get 1680x1050 over VGA? This is only one of the most common resolution on widescreen LCD VGA monitors today.
- syztem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+42005 Sony SXRDs (KDS-RxxXBR1) - Doesn't support 1080p inputs at all. However, they upconvert all signals to 1080p.
2006 Sony SXRDs (KDS-xxA2000) - Supports 1080p input via HDMI only. VGA and Component only accept 1080i. Which of course gets upconverted to 1080p.
2006 Samsung DLP (HL-Sxx87S + HL-Sxx88S) - Supports 1080p input via HDMI, VGA and Component.
However from my personal experience SXRD sets offer a better picture and less annoyances (no rainbow effect, no screen door effect, etc.)
So if only Sony would accept the 1080p signal from the other two inputs we'd have a match made in heaven. Doubtful though. - cyberscape2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Straight from MS, for the *cough* low price of $40.
I've seen a few third-party ones floating around online, but my MS one is actually fantastic, so I suppose I can forgive a forty dollar pricetag. - daedal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Thanks, I appreciate it.
- schadenfreude56, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4http://www.majornelson.com.nyud.net:8090/archive/2006/11/30/dashboard-update-aka-the-1080p-fix.aspx
- EXreaction, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4The next time you sign into Xbox Live, you’ll be prompted for a dashboard update. The update contains:
* Improved support for HD video output over VGA, including 1080p resolution
* Improved plug and play performance for wired headsets when being used with wireless controllers
* Changes made to recently played games list to improve accuracy - Fixxxer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'm sick of Call of Duty 2 freezing up every 10 minutes when I have my resolution set to 1024x768 over VGA... Hopefully that'll get fixed too.
- daridave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3^ the way I see it, if there is a difference between VGA and Component, it's probably related to how your tv/monitor deals with it, not the signal itself.
(I am writing this because me in VGA@ 1280x768 looks better than my friend at 720p, but my monitor may just be better than his TV...)
Anyone is welcome to correct me if I'm wrong ... - Jaymoon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5All these are, are just updates which improve the status of what you're doing while playing online that shows in your profile.
Either it means that some games were not having the status updated correctly, or not often enough. - Hickeroar, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9http://news.teamxbox.com/xbox/10140/Xbox-360-Dashboard-Update-Released/
Here ya go - broly1718, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3check for used vga cables from rhino, eb, or gamestop. I got mine from rhino for $14
- afex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3it should (going by KDS-55A2000 since you didn't give a model)
- thnyu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The reason Microsoft is using an analog signal is because, unlike a digital signal, you can force more data through then the cable can carry (you just get some quality loss). A 1080P signal at 60 FPS has a bit rate 1.485 Gbit/sec or a frequency of 185.5 MHz. Right now this doesn't mean much, because basically nothing actually has a 1080P signal at 60fps; however, as media gets closer to that mark, probably around 30fps, you're going to see both VGA and Component max out. It gets even better then that... since the signal is analog not digital any device using it wont be able to recognize the bandwidth limitation, and instead of getting a nice error message you're going to end up with signal degradation and some very nasty artifacts.... now to get a bit more advanced. For Component video cables the limitation on throughput is that the wavelength (which affects the distance an analog signal can travel) is equal to the speed the signal is traveling divided by the frequency. This is represented by Wavelength = v /f.
The speed of a signal over a component cable is pretty consistent at 3x10^8 meters/sec. Knowing this and that 1080p60 requires a Freq of 185,000,000 Hz then we can divide the Freq by the speed the signal travels to get .61666~ meters. This means that even running at maximum theoretical capacity (which is always impossible, and will burn out any wire) you will be limited to a cable length of 24.24 Inches. That means when you start pushing 1080p 60 of a 3 or 5 foot component cable the signal is going to be degraded and you will destroy the cable. I won't go into debated VGA yet..but the outcome is very similar.
then math is linked here http://www.audioholics.com/techtips/audioprinciples/interconnects/componentvideocables.php
And here
http://www.audioholics.com/techtips/specsformats/futurehighdefinitionTV.php - totorototoro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Where can I get one of those nifty VGA-component cables? Those look sweet!
- funnydale, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Agreed. I have a 22 inch LCD monitor with VGA, DVI, and Component inputs. With some work, I managed to get 1920x1080 to work on my monitor. I just manually synced up my screen to fit the picture. But there is still a half inch cut off on the left side of the screen. But to be fair, it's not really noticeable.
When I tried to use the component cables in 720P mode, huge sections from the left and right side were cut off. While 1080i mode was better, there was still a section missing from both sides of the screen.
What I want to know is, why is Microsoft making such a big deal about 1080P, a mode that 95% of 360 owners won't be able to use? But it continues to ignore the "standard" 16:10 aspect ratio. A ratio that 90% of wide-screen computer monitors use? - totorototoro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3thanks cyberscape2, I'll check it out!
- SpaceNinjaDino, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I've been playing with 1920x1080 resolution over VGA since Gears of War came out just fine. I hope they didn't break that feature.
- DTJunkie07, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2oh my bad its the KDS-50A2000 shouldnt make a difference...i hope. and thanks alot for the reply!
- elbeano, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I don't have any way of posting decent enough screens, but I can assure you the difference between component and VGA on the same TV can be HUGE. I have a samsung 23" lcd, and the VGA cable presents a noticeably sharper image.
This is primarily due to where the scaling is done. If you're outputting from the component, you're outputting 1280x720 from the xbox. If you're outputting from the VGA cables, you are allowed the option of 1360x768 (this is the native resolution of almost all LCDs, if they're not 1080p). So... it's a matter of whether or not you want to use your tv to scale up your 720p signal to 768p, or if you want the 360 to do it for you.
Added benefit: the 360 is a spectacular dvd upconverter if you have the VGA, it won't upconvert through the component cables. I got the HD-DVD drive, and most people have a tough time distinguishing between an HD-DVD and the same movie on DVD. That isn't a nock on HD-DVD, it's a nod to how good the upconversion is on the 360. Well... that, and my tv is only about half the possible resolution that I would get if I hooked it up to a 1080p tv. - HappyScrappy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That's all wrong. Longer cables, as long as they are impedance matched, can produce high quality video. Yes, the high frequency (minute detail) data degrades first (this is referred to as a "tilt" by cable people), but a good thick cable with double/quad shield can carry top quality for a hundred feet or so, even 1080P.
The thing is I don't want a good thick cable. With HDMI/DVI I can carry that same signal 100 feet over a cheaper, thinner cable.
HDMI provides higher quality over cheaper, easier to use cables for the average customer. And that (and also because TVs don't accept 1080P over component) is why HDMI will end up beating out component. MS will certainly add HDMI in their next major hardware update (probably the 65nm one). - jake8689, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3if your t.v dident support it your screen would go black at lest thats what mine did
- mini_moose, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@ Allanon
I'm of that thought process; 1080i looks phenomenal. 1080p would be nice, but I seriously doubt I'd be able to tell the difference. That being said, if Microsoft would like to put out an HDMI cable for the 360 I'd be more than happy to buy it to get 1080p as the selection on the display menu is just sitting there taunting me. - Fixxxer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Or, if you want to hack-up your standard 360 cable, you can make your own VGA/component adapter:
http://www.engadget.com/2006/11/14/how-to-turn-a-standard-xbox-360-video-cable-into-a-vga-cable-fo/ - shlemielo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Agreed. My LCD maxes out at that resolution as well...what res. do you have it currently set to? I'm trying to figure out which one looks best.
- mini_moose, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2My Sony KDS-R60XBR2 doesn't do 1080p over component. VGA can, but displays a 5 inch border all around it. I, for one, would prefer an HDMI cable on the 360 for this reason alone. I tried the 1080p option on the 360 this morning and still no love.
- josegutz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah, I like Sneak King. I am still at the Sawmill. I have about 4 more missions left.
I wanted to try Pocket Bike racer. IS it really that bad? I thought it looked fun... - Septimus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Bastard update just bricked my console. Arrrggghh.
3 weeks for them to replace my console with a beaten 2nd hand one (if the rumours are true). - LiveWire530, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I also have the Sony KDS-50A2000.
It supports 1080p, but ONLY through HDMI. The VGA and Component only accept 1080i or 720p. - Catalyst, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Would what culbeda said actually work? i'd be willing to give that a try...... any comments?
- tastyterrorist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I don't think that set accepts 1080p inputs, just outputs at 1080p.
- chromium, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I use a Dell 2405FPW and at 1920x1080 the difference between component and VGA is like chalk and cheese. VGA is just so much crisper. This new update appears to have fixed the horrible tearing that I used to get using VGA which is awesome!
- Catalyst, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I previously mentioned I have a KDS-R50XBR1 (same as 60 just smaller) and so I bought a VGA cable today to try it out........ same result as what you just described. Sigh.
So..... we're screwed with regards to the 360? - TylerDurden76, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"I also have the Sony KDS-50A2000.
It supports 1080p, but ONLY through HDMI. The VGA and Component only accept 1080i or 720p."
That's really ***** of Sony, and is the only thing keeping me from buying the XBR2. Their little anticompetitive limitations on inputs for 1080p. - thnyu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1First off, anyone with a lick of common sense knows that NOTHING, including component cables, can work at 100% of its theoretical maximum....secondly, nice references, "Cable People", I like that.
- izzyb412, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I know some of my recently played games took a long time to show up on my profile (like on xbox.com) or didn't show up at all.
- easyone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I get connection errors everytime I try... rebooted the console twice....
- HappyScrappy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The Sony A2000 series (55, 60) will not accept 1080P over component or VGA. Only over HDMI.
Again, MS needs to get HDMI. 1080P over component is useless because nothing is set up to receive it. - doswarrior, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Screwed up my console as well. I can still get to Live before the graphics conk out so hopefully they release a fix.
