- Natetendo83, on 10/10/2007, -6/+46I wouldn't jump on this just yet. I also work at Best Buy and this morning the corporate computers screwed up on the price changes and everything was showing up as closeout. Even the 360 Elite model was marked as "deleted" in the computer, which obviously isn't true. Even more amusing was how the Wii and PS3 were similarly marked. Unless the 360 Core remains marked as deleted after the computer system fixes itself this shouldn't be taken too seriously.
- 0two, on 10/10/2007, -5/+40The core is completely useless. I mean, it doesn't cost $300, it costs $350 because you HAVE to buy a memory card. So basically, for a $50 difference, you lose the hard drive (which is necessary for just about everything the system does), the wireless pad, the HD cables, and the headset. The only reason it was made is that they wanted to be able to say "Xbox 360: $300".
Good riddance if this is true. - snoopdogg, on 10/10/2007, -5/+19good, and microsoft should do the same..although i saw a lot at best buy the other day.
- chocobomog, on 10/10/2007, -4/+17This is a rumor so it should be taken with a grain of salt. But if true, it negates the benefits of a 360 price drop. Prior to this you could buy a 360 for $300, $400, or $480. But now if you want one, you have to pay $350 or $480(?). So to the average consumer, the price of the 360 went up. And to make matters worse, there are no benefits of the upgrade because developers can't create games which require the harddrive without ostracizing the Core owners.
- BrandonMills, on 10/10/2007, -2/+14MS drops the price of the Core, but they're just clearing existing inventory....
*cough* never heard this story before. - TeamWookie, on 10/10/2007, -4/+14When are 65nm fab 360s gonna be released?
- Ajajadude, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Haha, and the fanboys who were bashing Sony for doing this aren't saying a thing...
Regardless, the Core is/was a useless console SKU. When I got my 360, I didn't consider the Core for any period of time. No point in getting a "next-gen" console without a HDD. - airwalkery2k, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9Here's the article--fight the Firewall!
--------
For those hoping that the expected $50 Xbox 360 price cut would bring the Core model down to the Wii-diculously great price of $250, we got some bad news. According to a source at Best Buy who sent Joystiq these images, the Xbox 360 Core model is dead and remaining stocks are all that's left of the system.
The sheet, according to our source, shows the description of the Xbox 360 Core hardware and underneath it is the word "deleted, meaning it is being taken out of the system." The out of stock date reads 7-29-07 and the larger image (found after the break) shows the pref code "y." According to the source, "This means replenishment of this item is not expected."
In a statement from July 16, when we originally heard rumblings that the Xbox 360 Core was over, a Microsoft spokesperson told us in regards to it being discontinued, "No. Xbox 360 Core remains an important member of the Xbox 360 family." Well, if the Best Buy papers end up being true, an important part of the family is about to swim with the fishes. Like Fredo from The Godfather, it breaks our hearts. We've contacted Microsoft to see if they'd like to revise their "important member" statement. - WaltJay, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7The reason why Microsoft made the Core system is because it wants to get to a certain price point ASAP. This is because month after month, the Playstation 2 continues to sell very well. That tells us that there is a large segment of the gaming population, aka the casual market, that 1) doesn't care about online play because PS2 online is joke and 2) doesn't care about HDD and is okay with using memory cards. Like others, I wish that all 360 systems had a HDD so developers could take advantage of it, but MS is trying to win this generation outright, not just beat the PS3. To do that, they need an entry level system that the casual market is okay with price-wise. Though I wish it was on its way out, or never existed in the first place, I think the Core is here to stay.
- Elranzer, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7The Pro doesn't come with Wireless. You still need to drop another $100 for it, even if you bought the Elite.
- Almadiel, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Interesting, this means that the price of the x360 has effectively gone up by $50.
- bigdsinferno, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8actually, the core was a good idea for someone who had to buy a replacement xbox and didn't want to buy another hard drive. So, i wouldn't say anyone who bought one was a complete "baffoon."
- Cyber_Akuma, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8Unfortunately, the core still exsists alongside premium owners, even if its not sold anymore, so software developers have to support it.
The reason I don't like the core, is because since it exsists(even if discontinued now its considered a 360 so this still applies), it forces developers to make retail games that must run without a HDD present (FFXI is about the only exception). It also forces developers that make downloadable games to make sure their games arent larger than a memorycard, which gave many developers severe headaches, just look at the people that made Roboblitz. SOTC only came out once a card larger than the 64 megs one was released. - hadiz, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Thank Christ. There is no point in buying a core system anyway- you need the hard drive or the memory unit to even be able to save games. The memory unit alone is what, $50? Chip in another $50 and get the "Premium" or "platinum" or whatever they call the console with the 20GB drive.
- jdaniel284, on 10/10/2007, -5/+10I quit supporting this console and sold all my 360 stuff on eBay. That's too bad too, because I had a lot of fun with it. But after MS refused to refund my $140 for the red lights of death, I had had enough. MS doesn't have a console monopoly and they are acting like they do.
- MatttK, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Yeah, really. The Core is just delaying what you're going to buy for more later.
- PhillAholic, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4The core model was dead from the start. You can't do anything with it that the system is designed for, and it seems to be more of a bottleneck for game creators then anything. Just think if they could use the hard disk as scratch space as an option, games could be better. But with the Core model that'll never happen. A game maker won't alienate a system owner because of it. No idea what Microsoft was thinking on that one.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Ahh. So now, will the legions of diggtards sit back and decry this a "just a SKU readjustment?"
- jostheller, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5heh... why would you need a replacement 360? red ring?
- tommiwan, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7Dugg down.. the article specifically states that microsoft was contacted and they said they have no intention of discontinuing the core. It is only best buy who is supposedly going to stop carrying it.
- CReyes4182, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4The Core is what is holding the 360 back. Developers have to work around the fact that some 360s don't have hard drives. No hard drive is almost as bad as using DVDs for HD games.
- thebman990, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6I work at best buy so I'm getting a kick out of most of these comments.
Whoops. I apologize for the Farkism. - fuzzynyanko, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7Might as well. The Core needs a memory card, which is automatically $50. The $50 360 memory card is a good deal and all, but not compared to the $100 20 gig hard drive.
- mrfreeziexp, on 10/10/2007, -3/+6Hmm. that's interesting.. So, essentially, the "pro" SKU(w/ 20 gb hdd) is now the core. And the "elite" is now the pro.
- cmgarcia, on 10/10/2007, -4/+7Buried for your username. God damn racist. Jk. Maybe.
- m1a2c2kali, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3i got a core cuz my premium broke out of warranty and i didn't wanna spend 100 bucks to get a refurb system and wait 3 weeks
- gwolf, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Also a good idea for people short on cash who couldn't afford to buy the 360 all at once.
I really don't see the barrier to developers using the hard drive, just put a sticker on the game saying hard drive required. - ericrous, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2MS not making the hard drive standard was one of the biggest bonehead moves in console history (a rare step BACKWARDS for a console generation).
- DimitriVetra, on 10/10/2007, -4/+6i'm in ur store changin ur prices.
- frygar, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Don't forget, it's all about choice
- Rapter09, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2If BestBuy is stopping stocking the Core model, or something similar, consider it a boon: Microsoft will realize that you can't just release a - in my opinion - completely useless SKU just to say their consoles are cheaper than Sony's. We do not want a shift in business models where companies are excluding things from their consoles to make more money off of people, or use it as a marketing scheme to one-up the comp. Just make the effing console and let us play it.
- KyleMistry, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Shadow of the Colossus in HD would be pretty damn awesome.
On that note, an HD Ico would kick ass as well. - elvenseven, on 10/10/2007, -4/+6The 360 makes Apple Pippin look good.
- gozroth, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I work at Microcenter in the game department and we actually had a return call from microsoft the second day of E3. I tried to get the word out but apparently no body pays attention unless it's best buy doing it. anyway I bet they did it because everyone was infatuated with E3 that no one was paying attention to retail. microsoft knew that so they took advantage of it.
- tehpwnrate, on 10/10/2007, -4/+5Only if the "average consumer" is a buffoon who buys the core. The core was a huge ripoff, as you essentially need that HDD (which is $100 alone) and the wireless, HD cables, and other accessories with the Pro were pretty necessary as well. I agree that it's less of a "price drop," but the core shouldn't have been much of an option anyway.
- gwolf, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Why the Wii doesn't have a hard drive either.
- celkin, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Buried for Em-Dollar-Sign
- ELCad, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Sure there is. Tto replace you broken Premium.
- synce, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2I remember reading a rumor somewhere that after the price cut a memory card will come included with the Core. It wouldn't be such a bad deal then, would it?
- fallenone05, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1a what? a what? I can't handle the suspense!!
- CheapyD, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1It could also mean the discontinuation of this particular core system (to make room for new 65nm versions and/or one with a memory card/game pack-in). Personally, I think 3 SKUs are at least 1 too many. I also think Microsoft would love to include an HD in every box. This opens the door for them to sell movies and TV shows, and that business seems to be doing very well for them.
I guess it comes down to this: Does Microsoft need a $250 box to compete with the Wii? - macwally, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Does anyone else wonder why all of these pictures are so fuzzy? Can't anyone take a clear photo or scan...?
- Natetendo83, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Well I work at store 433 and this morning our price changes came out with everything marked on closeout. If you don't want to believe me go ahead, your idiocy doesn't change the fact that I still work at Best Buy...ass
- andykram, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Fight the firewall eh? Where I work even (especially) digg.com is blocked. I would fight that firewall, but is it worth it for only occasional peeks at Digg?
- Algfrig, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1I think you mean SOTN, unless no one told me that Shadow of the Colossus was released for the 360.
- ericrous, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1No one bought the core system. It was truly a tard box.
- Barnolde, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1The new 360 models will be 65nm and have HDMI, that's probably all this is.
Unfortunately, it seems the tard pack is here to stay and continue to gimp our games. - DeepFreezed, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2inaccurate. just wait for the tomorrows digg "360 Core Not discontinued. Major Nelson Confirms"
- gwolf, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Developers can do whatever they want as long as they inform the consumer of the system requirements, like, Hard Drive Required. How many cores do you think are out there that didn't eventually buy the hard drive any way?
- mythicflux, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2Oh please, as if RSS is always right. Having worked as Best Buy for 2.5 years before moving on I can say RSS is far from reliable. And quite honestly if the guy above you is in a different district or God forbid a different territory you maybe seeing radically different data because Best Buy is a nation wide company. The glitch he's claiming to see could easily be localized to his area.
