- reaver, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You guys are idiots. All this says is that you may be able to play BC without a harddrive. Everyone knows oyu will need a harddrive for most games to be BC.
Anyway, I think BC is stupid. - sandpaperback, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Whatever. We all know that this is the true secret behind the 360's backwards compatibility:

I think you need to move away from that pile of horse ***** that's spilling out of your mouth. - DigiRaven, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Here we come the attack of the fan boys. Silly kids ps3 is better, xbox is better, my crock pot is better. Geez get over it. Its just a game console.
- howitgoes, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1You get a new system to play new games not old ones.
- Trepan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The article sucks. It's already been announced that you must have a hard drive for backwards compatibility. Not because of the stupid emulator software, but because some (a lot of) games actually did natively use the hard drive for certain things, caching, etc.
I think this article is ***** and it's just some dude writing about what he thinks the reason is, and not actually anything related to facts. The emulator software is likely stored in ROM and then loaded into RAM when necessary, and executed. Also, wherever he heard the term 'AAA games' is beyond me, I've never heard of it before. They said they'd make all the most popular games work, which would in turn make most other games work. Not a big deal here, since even the PS2 can't play every single PSOne game.
People are making too big of a deal out of this. The average person that will use this feature is likely playing a popular game, which will work. Anyway, wasn't there a story just a few weeks back saying that compatibility was going to work for most if not all games? - krakelohm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hmm... 4 paragraphs and nothing worth while.
- BBX25, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Exactly Archer, have you coded for eight processors? It's hell. Seriously hell. I can see that developers won't use all of them; at least until they get a 'groove' going. Until then, you can expect software subpar to what was expected of the PS3. By then, developers would have gotten very used to the Xbox360's general purpose cores, and it makes the Xbox 360 look better. However, both are very capable consoles. Unfortunately, they're only as good as the games that run on them; so, if you have games that don't optimise the hardware, why have that hardware in the first place? Eventually the games will look very beautiful, just like how Gran Turismo 4 looked like an Xbox game on five year old hardware.
- Elranzer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Those developers who chose to use the XBox because it was the most powerful console of three didn't just sign up because it was the most powerful, it was also the easiest. The Xbox uses x86 architecture with a Windows 2000 kernel, something pretty much every software maker (including even Nintendo) knows how to develop for.
The Xbox 360 (as well as Gamecube and Revolution) use the nearly-as-easy PowerPC architecture. Most developers also already know how to develop for this, whether they've dabbeled with either Gamecube or Mac OS in the past. Sony PS3 uses the new Cell, which is undoubtably the most powerful, but also the hardest. That's no guarentee that everyone's gonna flock to it.
Original Xbox had the double-whammy of being the most powerful AND the easiet to develop for. This time, it's split with Revolution being the easiest but least powerful (single PowerPC, which itself is not too shabby), Xbox 360 being slightly more complicated but easy enough (multi-core PowerPC), and PS3 being the most powerful but hardest (Cell). So we'll have to wait and see.
The past does not dictate the future. If it did, then Nintendo 64 would have won against the PS1 since SNES was the most popular console and had all the 3rd party developers. If everyone left Nintendo for Sony in the past, it can very well happen they'll all leave Sony for Microsoft (or even Nintendo) if they have the goods.
Afterall, the PSP proved that even Sony can release a system that winds up being third place (to DS and GBA). - DalekG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"AAA title" is an industry term for a top-selling title, ex. Madden. It is used by vendors as well, to help buyers (such as myself) determine what games to order for sale. AAA is the best, followed by AA, A, and B. At least, that's as low as my vendor goes.
- Elliot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is all pretty much what Microsoft has said from the beginning...
They said at launch all the big hits will be supported, then over time, they will release patches to enable other sets of game through xbox live (i think through the silver xbox live... which is the free one out of the box) - j0keR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's about the games first, and about the hardware second.
Sony made sure that backward compatability was the number one factor when they decided to create the Playstation. This is something Nintendo (Except the GameBoy) and Sega never really implimented, so it obviously put Sony ahead of the game for the current generation (about to be retired) consoles.
Also, Sony is one of the top dogs when it comes to getting the big names to sign on. Aside from Halo and all of the Nintendo titles, Sony has nearly everything. Like I said, most gamers will probably think of the Playstation before they go for the Xbox, not speaking for the Halo fanboys of course.
The only reason the origional Xbox had a few of the good titles that they did was because of the overall system horsepower. Guess who's system those developers will be writing for?
The hardware race usually finishes off any doubts when it comes to who will make the most money. Because, let's be honest... Just because one console sells the most units doesn't mean the rest don't have quality games. The next Playstation obviously has the specs this time around, don't let the Xbox fanboys skew the numbers-- PS3 is the most powerful system yet. If developers can write the games properly (Which they most definately will), the results should be incredible.
For online I think good 'ol MS will take the cake though. Xbox live was obviously superior to the Playstation 2's offerings. Once again though, lets be serious-- online gaming on the console isn't everything. When compared to ALL online gaming, the console variety isn't even a factor. The Xbox is just a whimpy PC, and most people will want something unique-- which I don't see coming from MS. Want to play a wattered down FPS "franchise" with a controller? Well, we all know where you can find that. - DustoMan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The title of this digg is misleading. I think it's great that MS is thinking ahead and putting XB360 support into the XBOX games that will be coming out in the near future.
- bndocksnt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0lol @ sandpaperback
- emusnes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Just so you know Final Fasntasy might be on the 360, considering that Square Enix has a new deal in place with the 360. Which means that there titles are not for the PS3 only.
- lerch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If any of you seen the latest Diggnation, Kevin talks about this. He said something like "Microsoft said on a Japan press confrence that most, if not all games will be BC"
- Zippo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hmmm, I sure can't wait to fire up my Nintendo Revolution and play Kirby Super Star
- Trepan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They'll probably make it so you can't play Kabuki Warriors on the 360. Just out of good taste.
- BESsy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow, you are all fools. The PS2 is "Partially" backwards compatible also. If they don't say that everyone would be pissed when there favorite "Mr Spiders Tea Party" game doesn't work.
Most any game for Xbox that people acctually like will probably work on X360. - archer75, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0The PS3 is also very difficult to program for. And if developers don't specifically code for each of it's specialized processors(increasing time and cost) it will be a lower console than the xbox360.
I have also heard through the grapevine that the 360 will be fully backwards compatible with ALL xbox games but that microsoft does'nt want to make a press release stating that if it does'nt come to pass. Either way I don't care. If I need to play an xbox game I have an xbox. - wiggimt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"my ps3 will be FULLY compatible with thousands more games"
$100 more and about 8 months later?
i could have 2x the enjoyment that any ps game could give me b/c i know that i'm playing and those that are waiting for the ps3 are still using their weak ps2's - Noah0504, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I'll be laughing at Xbox owners when I'm playing Final Fantasy VIII on my PS3. Partially backwards compatiable? Who's ever heard of such a thing.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Microsoft ***** the finest bitches.
- BugMeNot2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0http://digg.com/gaming/GC_2005:_Xbox_Live_Demonstration_
- Oh_Key_Nee_Nam, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0But obviously not doggystyle (oops) I mean backwards......
- spartan777, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0xbox 360 will suck the big one. my ps3 will be FULLY compatible with thousands more games. think about it. not only will there be full backwards compatibility for ps2 games, but ps1 games, and i can also use my ps3 for psp games and vice versa.
- paintball102089, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0that is gay. microsoft is screwed.
- emurillo510, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0i still think xbox360 will do well stop messing with microsoft
