Lot's of games haven't been released yet, Lots of those games that have arrived so far don't appeal to the Japanese market.
However the horizon shows that there are many studios interested and Developing for the 360 mainly for the japanese market. Call me a fanboy all you want Which I'm not, I Research what goes on in the console world.
This story is false, a form o SPECULATION not fact. Sure maybe the japanese don't like the 360/xbox or many american companies But as for interest..
Latest Polls through magazines and websites, Including Famitsu and all the other ones... While Sony leads, Microsoft has a biting chance. - TRUEPATRIOT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4i think MS should drop asia and focus on EU and the americas.so atleast we can say we have a console they would have to import to play =D.like they do with wonderswan and alot of handhelds.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"The Japanese market is laughably unimportant. It is smaller by far than the US or EU markets, and tends to buy the same games over and over and over again."
Japan is the worlds second largest market for video games behind the U.S. Canada is the third. Japan is also the worlds second largest economy. To say they're unimportant as a market is the height of ignorance. - replica, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Frome the story:
"It’s quite clear that the Japanese gamers prefer something built by one of their home companies (let’s call it a question of national pride) "
National Pride is something the USA is missing. Very sad.
That said, the 360 sales will increase once DOA4 is released at the end of the month. - tanxadillo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I don’t think the reason why the Japanese are not buying the X-Boxes is because of national pride, I mean Apple is pretty big there. I’m pretty sure iPods are out selling the Sony counterparts. I think it’s just due to the lack luster launch titles.
- wilf_brim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Duh. Microsoft is never going to do well in Japan, essentially for Nationalistic issues. They would have done better diverting those units to the US market (which is selling out) and waiting to release in Japan until after they have more games (RPGs) there. Most of the sales are (I think) from technophiles that will buy it no matter what. There can be an arguement made that MS should just abandon the Japanese market, and shift the resources to the US and Europe.
- osxisthebest, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3ok so take all those Xbox's sitting on the shelf in japan and SEND THEM BACK HERE so the people who actually want one can actually get one.
- vitorsilva, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3In Portugal X360 isn't getting much attention neither. I can buy a whole bunch of them without any hassle in the nearest store. All that stock rupture that happens through all the rest of the Europe isn't happening here. :)
- Axlrose, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I bet this aritcle was prepared before launch day.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Oops, looks like they forgot to take Japanese gaming preference into account. Looks like Halo won't be winning them many sales in Japan.
- mntpng, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2There is no way you can claim to be a winner in console war without taking majority of Japanese market. It looks like XBOX 360 is a repeat of what happened with the old XBOX. Also I don't think you can say that "national pride" is the only reason for XBOX 360's lack of buzz over there. XBOX 360 is still too bulky and clumsy looking for Japanese consumer's taste. The ghostbuster's trap sized external power supply isn't very attractive.
- sinfony, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Why is it assumed that any business practice Microsoft uses is bad and evil? Yes, the 360 is a little cheaper in Japan. So? Videogames are HUGELY more expensive in the UK than in the US. You don't just set one price and charge that price everywhere in the world. You charge whatever will you get you the best return in whichever market you're selling to. Every company does this. Apple does it. Sony does it. Microsoft is not the devil. Try to get that through your thick skulls.
- Strahd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Not news here. Even second and third generation japanese are very loyal to japanese products. A friend of mine was an exchange student from Japan and she relayed to me how much her parents emphasized support of japanese companies.
I felt very strongly that no matter what MS did to appeal to japanese market with the 360 that they would get a tepid response. I mean, look at all the special edition xboxes that japan got that never saw the light of day in europe and the US. They still couldn't sell them even with price breaks and special editions. It's not so much that the japanese hate US products so much as they like supporting their own.
That said, this is great news for me. My sister in law lives in japan, so she'll be able to buy one and bring it home for me this Xmas, if I want one that is. - replica, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Trade deficit is a very bad thing. More money going out than coming in. It is basic math.
@uncledad
More lies. I can not wait to lie about the PS3. Should be lots of fun. - hibern8, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"The Japanese market is laughably unimportant. It is smaller by far than the US or EU markets, and tends to buy the same games over and over and over again."
That is by far the most ignorant thing I have heard in a very long time. - sinfony, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6"Japan is the worlds second largest market for video games behind the U.S. Canada is the third. Japan is also the worlds second largest economy. To say they're unimportant as a market is the height of ignorance."
Japan is a nation of about 130 million people, less than half the population of the United States and less than a third the population of the European Union (a market where games are advancing rapidly). The Japanese economy has been stagnating for a decade. It does not have the power to make or break a console.
Furthermore, the Japanese game market is completely inelastic. They buy RPGs the way Americans buy sports games, but almost to the exclusion of any other genre comparatively. No console launch is complete without several mah-jong titles. Bizarre gimmick games can succeed in a way that they cannot in any other market.
The American market is indisputably larger, and the games that succeed there are largely the kind of games which would never sell in Japan. Last year's bestselling games were GTA and Halo 2, and the top ten included three football games. Pokemon was really the only game in the top ten last year in America that did particularly well in Japan.
I won't argue that people in Japan don't buy games. But they don't buy enough games to matter as much as the American market, not by a long shot. Therefore, success in Japan is completely unnecessary to succeed with a console. Yes, the Xbox lost Microsoft 4 billion dollars, but the PS2 lost money for Sony. A loss of money does not mean the console was not successful. The Xbox established Microsoft as a major player in the console space, and the Xbox 360 is set up to generate huge revenue streams for Microsoft. I call that a success. Nintendo, which flopped in the American market comparatively, is in a far weaker position in the American market next generation, and success in Japan only matters in Japan. Success in America provides you with a far larger possible market, particularly with the developing European market.
For Microsoft, the Japanese market is a bonus, not a necessity. Nintendo needs it. Sony thinks they need it, but they don't. The American market is by far the most important in the videogame industry. - crapiolio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Can't you realize how much the Japanese hate the USA? No? Too bad.
- Embryo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2http://www.watch.impress.co.jp/game/docs/20051210/xbox102.jpg -- quite a few non-Japanese people in there... Oh and does anyone remember one of Microsoft's first Xbox 360 presentations where people were hired to applause like some dumb puppets? I would imagine it's pretty easy to "sell out" fast at a hand-picked location, when you're talking about MS
- JesperL, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"i think MS should drop asia and focus on EU and the americas."
The problem is, is that the Japanese consoles dominate all regions, so to win a fair marketshare, you'd have to attack at all parts of the market sector, so to speak. - uptown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"[UPDATE] Next-gen console sells out in half an hour at event location--full premiere party coverage with photos inside."
http://www.gamespot.com/news/6141063.html - FortyTwo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think the more damning fact is that a premium system only costs 330 bucks in japan! Meaning, they COULD charge much less than what they are over here and in Europe, but they would rather bend their loyal fan boys over and take them for all they got.
that is the thing that I think a gamer should be mad about. - yaos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Thats Ok.. They dont know what they are missing, I specially enjoy people that bash the xbox 360 without even having it LOL 1080i looks amazing. And by the way my Japanese friends that crap you call nintendo not so good (wand controller whats is that about) and your women dressed like anime not so cool eiher, oh and also eating DOG didnt exactly hit the U.S by storm ROTFLMAO (i know is Korea)AND FOR THE LOVE OF GOD NOT EVERY GAME HAS TO HAVE A SWORD!!!!!! (that was my post)"
yes...lets make fun of the asians now you typical illiterate spic - metacoola, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Japan doesn't like xbox because U.S. is full of moronic casual gamers who don't know what a good game is. Halo is only okay....its just another shooter...online isn't anything new..Not to mention morons keep screaming on xbox live...I don't feel like paying a couple hundred for retards screaming over dying on a ***** game.
- andreo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Maybe if they released the 360 with a half dozen dating sims then the Japanese would warm up to it. Include one with Kasumi from DOA and I'm sure it would sell out.
- GhostFreeman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"National Pride is something the USA is missing. Very sad."
Although it has absolutely nothing to do with the link in general, I couldn't have put it any better. - ihatekevinrose, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If I were Japanese, I'd buy one :P
- ImpactedColon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't understand this "report" at all. Another fanboi trying to act smart before the facts come in. Seems that Gamespot reports better than sluggish sales: http://www.gamespot.com/news/6141063.html. Don't feel like clicking due to low national pride? Allow me to transcribe the headline for you and cease the useless talk: Xbox 360 launches in Japan
[UPDATE] Next-gen console sells out in half an hour at event location--full premiere party coverage with photos inside.
Hmmm. Half hour sell out eh? Yep, those Japanese hate that system. - Kikkoman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I agree with mullinsmcd, Xbox tends to make very very short games.. (which tends to be what North Americans are accustomed to, play use chuck, no replay.. imo) The arcades and pc can give me that experience anytime.. xbox = pc in a box is like id like to think.
Japanese has arcades everywhere.. if i was a Japanese id just walk down the street and play a much more powerful version of any xbox games.. - Flashman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@ replica: "National Pride is something the USA is missing. Very sad."
I guess that's why you all went ape-***** over the 360 when it came out. Huh. - xodex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1MyBotPiko, How would you know?
Microsoft won't have a total sales sheet to give to the press for a while, 2 weeks estimated. - MyBotPiko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1xodex
According to the article (and their sources), first day of sales wasn't that good, that is what we're discussing here isn't it? - Mullinsmcd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1^ Yeah if you like short RPGs. Jade empire was ok , but KOTOR you can even get on the PC.
- MyBotPiko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1For skellener, and other who keep pasting this link.
>Xbox 360 launches in Japan
>-Next-gen console sells out in half an hour at event location-
> http://www.gamespot.com/news/6141063.html
That's exactly what it says, it sold out at _event_ location. Normal stores experienced poor sales. - yaos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1low national pride? What the hell? Just because some people choose not to buy xboxes or (shock)the games don't appeal to them, we are suddenly low on national pride? I never knew being obligated to buy american ***** like xboxes would constitute national pride. Go figure
Looks like we are high on ignorance on digg. - smarty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Exactly. "Next-gen console sells out in half an hour at event location" It's AT THE ***** EVENT LOCATION. Of course they're sold out. It doesn't mean that they sold many copies in other places.
- Zippo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The original XBox didn't do well in Japan either. Nintendo owns the market with Sony trailing behind. Microsoft shouldn't feel too hurt and focus on the American/Canadian market, and possbibly the European.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1in english please
- odysseus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1From xodex's link:
http://www.watch.impress.co.jp/game/docs/20051210/xbox104.jpg
What the hell is that thing on the ceiling? That's huge!
And ghostbuster-sized power supply (comment by mntpng) - hahaha. - hectorguerra, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1odysseus funny post lol.. It really makes no sense bashing a system for its power supply that you can just hide or whatever. WE GET IT ITS CLUNKY big ***** DEAL anyhow witty POST
- h2d2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Alright... XBox 360 is a failure... where's the party at? Steve Jobs' house?
- tolbs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1damn, I have to stop reading these comment threads. I just lost about 10 minutes and a jillion brain cells.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1the beautifully ironic part of this story is that the 360 was *DESIGNED BY A JAPANESE DESIGN FIRM* to try and appeal to japanese people. i guess they were able to see through the *****.
- hectorguerra, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1hey lobbster sorry dude this post was actually for mushoo.. see my post above he got pissed off because i bashed japan a little bit
- lukas88, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1how many good rpgs were there for the origional xbox? very few if any. jp is huge into rpg and they have no love for microsoft because of it. (neither do i)
- Mullinsmcd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://moneycentral.msn.com/investor/invsub/results/statemnt.asp?Symbol=SNE
Sry i forgot the link to the Statements - tastypastry, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just goes to show you that Sony owns the console race no matter what. I know I'll be getting a PS3 and Rev. on their launch days.
- Kikkoman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Japan doesn't like xbox because U.S. is full of moronic casual gamers who don't know what a good game is."
- id like to say the same.. but itd be too harsh to categorize everyone the same? lets just say japanese has much more hardcore gamers in the >teen+ age group
"I'd rather have a short, fun RPG than a tedious, endless Japanese one."
- the other side of the story - sinfony, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1KOTOR/Jade Empire were worth the price of the Xbox on their own.
