That's quite a disgusting comment, and pays no respect to those innocent people and families who lost their lives because of war. How you arrived that comment based on poor console sales in the region reflects very poorly on you indeed. I suppose you were sickened by the lame tactics of the terrorists taking out 2 buildings full of civilians in NY? Now contrast that with the US dropping atomic bombs on millions of innocent families to win a war. That was indeed a very cheap and sub-human tactic, NOTHING to be proud of. Keep that 'OWNED' crap to yourself. - ReyBrujo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Oh, and one of the best replies I have ever read: http://www.joystiq.com/2005/12/22/nintendo-up-but-microsoft-down-in-japan/2#c870345
"Is it any wonder that MS can't sell consoles in Japan? I mean, the most hyped game for xbox360 has been COD2 whether it was released in Japan or not. I mean its a game about a war that ended with them getting the atom bomb! I'm sorry but if the most hyped launch title on PS3 is a game where you get to be an al'queda operative attacking the US, I probably wont buy a PS3 whether they launch that game in the US or not." - zediker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5well considering there are practically no games out for the xbox 360 that would interest the japanese audience, its no supprise it isnt selling well. Hell, the launch games for the 360 in the US are no reason to buy it as well, since over half of them can be found on other consoles or look just as good, if not better on your PC. So why pay $450 +tax to play a 'new' game when you can pay $50 to play it on a current system. Until alot of good new exclusive titles show up for the 360, there is almost no reason to buy one other than the 'oooooh shiny' effect.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4What I personally don't understand, is why are some people are so worried, so troubled by the fact that MS doesn't sell those 360's to well. Is MS paying your bills every month, or something... why do you people care so deeply about how many units have sold? Am I missing something here? If MS indeed can pay my rent, cable, car lease.. etc, then I'll give a damn.
- zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"MS should forget about Japan. The Japanese only buy Japanese products!"
Incorrect. The Japanese buy the best products, simple as that. They aren't morons like most places elsewhere in the world.
How are these for some numbers: iPod has 60% market share in the digital audio player market compared to Sony at 10%. In Japan. - mntpng, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I just don't understand why they launched a console over there knowing they didn't have decent launch lineup appealing to Japanese gamers? Here is the largest software maker in the world and they didn't understand that people who buy game console buy it to play games on them? It's the software stupid!
I remember Microsoft goofed the old XBOX launch over there when some minor glitches. They just tried to deny the problem's existence by simply ignoring it and that turned into a public relations nightmare. They eventually fessed up and ended up replacing the defective XBOX but by that time damage was already done. I think some Japanese consumers remember this fiasco.
Having said all this, I'm surprised Japanese actually bought the old XBOX as much as they did considering it looks like a cheap PC stuffed into an over sized ugly plastic black box. Now Microsoft made the XBOX 360 which is still big albeit slightly nicer looking and yet it's quite deceptive because you got this giant ghostbusters trap power supply unit hanging off of it. When will Microsoft learn that you have to make things small, quiet, and cool over there in Japan? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Ok,
Here's a link to 360 sales in Japan:
http://www.m-create.com/jpn/s_ranking.html
That's 8000 confirmed.
You now have about 1.1 million more units to demonstrate have been sold from legitimate news sources.
And don't bother trying to play the 'shipped' instead of 'sold thru' units game... - datruth29, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"Yes. Thank you very much, 12 year olds, for supporting the Japanese cartoon games."
If you think 12 year olds are the many buyers of Nintendogs and Animal Crossing, then you really have no idea what the heck is going on in the gaming industry. You see, there are adults that, *shock*, actually like to play these games. Like for instance, me. I'm 21 and I own Animal Crossing because its actually fun. It's a heck of alot better then Bulletproof, a Madden game that hasen't really changed in the past couple of years, a Star Wars game thats almost a complete rip of Battlefield 2, ANOTHER WWE game, ANOTHER Need for Speed Game, and ANOTHER Tony Hawk game.
As a matter fact, here's a test. Look at the top 10 games in November sales in all 3 major regions, that being NA, Europe, and Japan, and tell me which one makes you want to cry more. Oh, and by the way, all because a game shows massive blood, guts, swearing, and sex does not make the game mature. Shadow of the Colossus is a hell of alot mature then GTA, and it doesnt feature one moment of beating up a hooker. - ReyBrujo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3As I said in a Joystiq thread at http://www.joystiq.com/2005/12/22/nintendo-up-but-microsoft-down-in-japan/#c869886
If you are from US, let's do a little game:
1. Suppose PS3 is going to launch next week in US.
2. Suppose you own every Madden and Need for Speed game ever made.
3. Suppose for you EA is the biggest innovative company ever founded.
4. Now, suppose PS3 launching titles are two brain games, a puzzle, a FIFA game, and a fighting game.
5. Suppose the newer version of Madden is going to be released for Xbox on the following week.
5. Finally, suppose PS3 is compatible with only 10 PS2 titles.
Would you buy a PS3 with all those restrictions? Now, let me tell you what the japanese think: "No". Japanese got titles they don't like, the titles they expected have been delayed, the compatibility list is not at all the same one as in US, and PS2 is getting new versions of extremely popular franchises in Japan.
While it is true a japanese would prefer a japanese company because the company understand him, there is one thing clear: Sony is a much better console maker than Microsoft. It gets the better franchises, it gets the better games, etc
Being "cool" isn't as important in Japan as it is in US. - jedi0utkast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This is really sad to see people here turning news about sales into a racist battle, I am not Japanese and I felt offended by several of the comments. Japanese are entitle to their opinion and tastes the same as Americans, and if they have decided not to buy into the Xbox360 hype that does not make then Anti-American. I personally love Japanese culture in general, is one of the oldest and most complex in the planet.
These are the numbers, if anybody here has Microsoft stock and needs to bash others because of the feeling of failure, maybe you need to take that into your next stockholders meeting. we are all adults well at least some of us, this world is full of different cultures, people and taste.. Not everybody wants to play madden games or shoot things, this is our nature
"Every person is different".
I personally did not bother into buying a 360 just because the launch does not have any appealing games, if that changes in the future I will purchase a 360, and that I bet is the case in japan. This whole situation is a planning disaster from MS, they tried again to launch in a country without trying to understand the culture first, and without a must buy killer app aimed at the japan market, so if anybody is to blame for MS poor performance is MS.
And for those patriots around the board, start checking everything you own and throwing away things because, everything you own is bound to have parts not build on the US, even when the company is American or did you guys forgot about Global economy, Outsourcing, Imports, and Multinationals. - mushoo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4^^^^^^ This is Japan we're talking about. They can afford the 360 if they want it. Apparently they don't want the 360.
- r©ain, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Hahaha, it's like Japan just gave a collective STFU to MS.
As much as they'd like to lay one in Sonys backyard, I think I hear the sounds of a bitch-slapping going on in Redmond. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"MS should forget about Japan. The Japanese only buy Japanese products!"
Totally, like those iPods that come from Japan... - TimmyK., on 10/12/2007, -0/+2>>>posted by ReyBrujo "Being "cool" isn't as important in Japan as it is in US."
Wow you don't know much about Japanese pop culture do you?
Anyway it is obvious why the 360 hasn't gone over well in Japan. Microsoft screwed up the launch by trying to get it out there too soon. In doing so they didn't put out any games that the Japanese would care about, plain and simple. That combined with the Japanese general lack of caring about the original Xbox meant that they had no reason to be interested in the 360. What pisses me off is that by pulling this dumb worldwide launch BS Microsoft screwed a lot of the people that actually wanted a 360 in the US. Imagine if those 300,000 360's in Japan had instead been put on US shelves. They would have sold out instantly. So now they have a bad reputation in Japan and have just helped to increase Japanese interest in the PS3.
Also to the people complaining about the 360 launch titles, how many games would you buy at launch anyway? I have a 360, and I bought 3 titles, and there are at least 3 more I want. And to act like it isn't worth having a 360 because you can play Call of Duty 2 (the only PC game I know of on the 360) on your PC, you have made an idiotic statement. For $400 I am playing Call Of Duty 2 and it looks far better than it would on the average PC. In order to get those quality graphics out of the PC version most people would have to spend way more than $400.
And these games are all just first gen games designed on early developer kits and they already look amazing. Imagine what the games will look like in five years. Imagine what 360 games will look like this time next year. Hell look at Gears of War which comes out early 2006. Does anyone who bought a PS2 on release day think that after playing Time Splitters they would have expected to see something as beautiful as Metal Gear Solid 3, or Shadow of the Colossus on that system? Or games as amazing looking as Halo 2, Halflife 2, or Doom 3 on the Xbox? - bnolsen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It always comes back to the xbox360 being nothing more than an xbox with better HDTV support. How would that realyl excite any reasonable person? We've got a bunch of crackpots here in the US who feel they have to have everything shiny and new.
- Prophet, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Pushing back DOA4 is what is killing it. Like zediker said, there aren't any launch games that will appeal to .jp
- DangerMouse9, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The original Xbox sold 182 units LESS than what the XBox 360 sold, not what that one guy was thinking. Also, I read that they dropped the price of the XBox 360 in Japan to 150$ and it still hasn't helped. I just find it terribly funny. There is a huge surplus over in Japan, yet people are paying 1000$ for one here.
- scrapstyle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Notice 6 out of the top ten games sold in Japan are RPGs. Due to lack of any decent RPGs, no Japanese would want a 360 as of yet.
- Abx0r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Japan is holding back gaming...lol. That's why most of the best games for consoles made are made in...hmmm where was that? Japan. Japanese are not stupid, and thats why they aren't buying the 360. Even I, an American, think the Xbox360 game lineup is a pile of crap. 50% of the games are Sports Titles, that are just the same damn thing as they were on the Xbox or PS2. WOW IT HAS HD, who cares, it costs you 3000 dollars to see the HD. Now before you call me a ps3 fanboy, or nintendo fanboy, I am not. I buy what makes sense. So far the 360 doesn't and looks like a total waste of money, and the majority of those who buy it and come here and talk about how great it is like x-box fanboys are the ones that have been brainwashed by the Microsoft Marketing crap. Americans in general are a whole lot easier to brainwash with marketing tactics than Japanese. They see the 360 for what it is, crap.
- valkraider, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Yes. Thank you very much, 12 year olds, for supporting the Japanese cartoon games."
Hmm. Except for me and my three best friends, all over 30, and love Nintendogs, Animal Crossing, Mario Kart, Mario Tennis, Mario Party, Meteos, Zelda, and other "kiddie" games.
Some games are just fun to play. Period. Nintendo has *always* had games that were *more fun* and *longer lasting* than XBox, and I don't see any change coming with the 360.
Sure, the XBox has flashy graphics and lots of first person shooters and Madden and all that - but after a few minutes playing those games, I am bored and I go back to the "kiddie" games on my NGC or GBDS that are actually *fun*.
Every system has exceptions. There are a couple good games for XBox and a few crummy ones on NGC. But XBox titles just seem to be marketed toward teenage boys who only want to shoot and kill. (Not that I don't like that - but it gets boring after a couple plays - games need to have *substance*).
Maybe people in Japan are not buying the XBox 360 because it is too expensive and offers nothing interesting to them? Would you pay $400 for something you didn't want? - Gatesophile, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Nintendo: Japanese
Japan: Japanese
...makes sense to me... - antiwmac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2btw, if you sit down and "really" think about buying xbox360, I will do exact same thing as what they do.
- TWiTarmy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1all the more reason to wait until Nintendo's Revolution.
the Japanese are known for being innovative and imaginative0 if anything is going to revive the gaming market, it's gonna be Revolution. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ouch! I don't think Microsoft are going to be able to get a successful console over there ever...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Dreamcast support was pulled primarily because SEGA could not afford to keep it running. Like Sony and Microsoft, they were losing money on the hardware and hoping to regain it through game sales and licensing fees... but, unlike Sony and Microsoft, they didn't have other massive revenue streams to keep the company afloat until the Dreamcast became profitable. Of course, there were other factors... including the failure of the Saturn before it, jumping the gun, the odd controller, etc... but money was the biggest issue. Also, IIRC, the Dreamcast launch lineup was actually the largest of any new console up until that time. It really wasn't a bad console... SEGA had just made far too many mistakes for it to succeed.
- jack_of_knaves, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1when you pay over retail it is because of high demand...or...lack of systems. Didn't anyone here notice the lack of systems released. All the more reason I say it was a premature release with Microsoft manufactured hype. We can agree that the 360 is not the system it should be/ was supposed to be.
- ahmerhussain, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The gamecube has better games.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Every one of the systems selling above retail HAS NO BIDS. Some clown putting his POS 360 on eBay for $10,000 with no one bidding on it means nothing.
360 - NO DEMAND
Where are all of these DESPERATE 360 fans frantically trying to outbid each other for a prized system on eBay???
Where???
360 - NO DEMAND
360s are sitting on eBay with starting prices just above retail with NO BIDS. 360 bids right now don't even cover the hassle of setting up an auction and taking pictures and all the other things you have to do to sell something on eBay. For anyone who has a real job whose time is worth something, you are losing money if you are dumb enough to try to sell a 360.
Why???
360 - NO DEMAND - jack_of_knaves, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Theory: Microsoft's Xbox 360 shortage was either...
- Fabricated to up sales figures in the release months
- Done so that the faulty premature systems could be fixed and released later
- or both of the above...
Don't believe the premature-ness? Try playing the 360 Madden - iSEPIC, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3gamecube is like 10% the price of a 360 - not everyone can afford a 360 and a few games costing 50-70 each.
- zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"All I can say is they are bias against Americans...."
Another ***** ignorant post. I have spent a lot of time in Japan and am even engaged to one. They virtually have a fascination going with all things American over there.
Now, as for Americans, they invented the terms 'Jap crap' and 'Cheap import junk'. You are like the pot calling the kettle black if you want to talk about cultural bias! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1US gamers 'dying to get their hands on a 360'???
As of a half hour ago, the local Frys I was just at had somewhere in the 30-50 360 boxes sitting in the console section. And people keep talking about seeing piles of new 360s at major retailers like Walmart and others.
If the 360 was actually selling out across the US and Europe, Microsoft would be flooding the Net with press releases trying to hype the fact.
The 360 does have low supply, but it has even lower demand. - theDrizzle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1it just amuses me when i hear people say that the xbox360 has the greatest lineup of launch games ever assembled...ha
- doddilus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yea just because its rated E does not mean its meant for kids only
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Also right now the top systems in Japan are the DS and the PSP with 65% an 15% of the market the PS2 only has 8% gamecube 3%
The true is Japan does not even care about Consoles they are playing portables - duketogo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Everything > 360
- zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"こにちわ!
See? I can do it too."
Apologies for the triple post. But technically speaking you misspelt that. In hiragana it's actually spelt 'ko-n-ni-chi-ha' (ie. こんにちは), but pronounced 'konnichiwa' ^_^ - ministewy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Funny how I was at an EB games yesturday, started playing "Call of Duty" on the Xbox 360 with a friend, then left it after about 5 minutes to go play Super Mario Strikers for the Gamecube...I guess people in Japan just realise you can have more fun with a cheep Gamecube then a big shiny 360, I'd call that smart, not this "anti-american *****"
- 808kick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1As far as I know the japanese aren't that xenophobic, they are not just collectively sitting there not buying ***** cause it's american. Personally the 360 doesn't appeal to me if i even buy one it won't be till they are less than 300 CDN.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Who the hell do you think you are fooling? There are probably five to ten thousand people who are in and out of Fry's today who could see the 360s themselves.
- Sirocco, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1The japs just don't really drool over FPS and sports games. And when your launch consists almost exclusively of FPS and sports games, you have to know you're going to have your ass handed to you.
MS was ***** stupid for launching with a piss poor collection of titles that pander to American MTV-generation tastes. If they had launched with DOA 4 and three Jap RPGs it'd be a totally different story... they'd sell 12 units instead of 3 :) - thewebguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0how lame, they try to screw over everyone with their tiered launch, and they end up losing out. nobody i know even cares to buyone until halo 3 is out hah
- thehybridone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0OK who here saw that coming
- j_bellone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The iPod isn't the best product, its simply the most marketed. If you check out the competition sound quality wise the iPod is inferior.
- pacogozalez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Seems Jpanese have a sound mistrust on MS products. From my experience, the 360 hardware is OK, like most of MS hardware, but the online-gaming experience is quite bad. The PGR game online will disconnect at random while searching opponents. Sometimes it takes me 10 attempts to get a 3 min. online game. In comparison, the NDS wifi online experience is very good.
- afrazkhan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Oh good. The slashdot crowd have finally all arrived.
- zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"The iPod isn't the best product, its simply the most marketed."
Funny, sounds just like the XBOX360. As for sound quality, I bet you are one of those people who claim they can hear dog friequencies. Get a life. The iPod leaves the other crap behind in terms of style and ergonomics. That last point is significant. If it weren't, all the competition wouldn't be trying to make knock-offs. Look at the latest Creative units for a laugh. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"My girlfriends neighbor has a buggy Xbox 360 and they were told by Microsoft that it was
shipped with a virus and would be replaced by Jan 4th..."
*****
thats plain and simple BS. No 360s were shipped with a Virus. Man that's one of the biggest piles of FUD I have ever seen posted as a comment. - jammen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0games are what's going to make or break the xbox 360 in japan. if ms doesn't make games that appeal to the japanese market then their sales are going to be low in japan. the 360 is selling fast in the us because americans play the type of games available on the 360. how many games do you see on store shelves as weird and off the wall in the us as you would in japan?
- Spirork13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't get why all of this flaming is going on, the Japanese like a different style of gaming than us, I bought a Xbox 360 for the same reason I bought a DS, the launch titles were not very good but they'll get better and just because you don't like the 360 doesn't mean you have to say "M$ is teh suks".
