- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+24well there is a kernel downgrade method.
http://www.xbox-scene.com/xbox1data/sep/EEylyyZEkyFookGJnX.php - john2kx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21Homebrew ruined the PSP? It's the only reason to own one.
- xerox, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20Reminds me of when the first PSP exploits rolled out. I hope I get to see 360 hacks evolve as much too!
- moojj, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20Just look at the number of Windows exploits compared to Xbox exploits and you shall find your answer.
- benitojuarez, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20i wouldnt believe app£eguru for the simple fact that he said m$
- SimonX314, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15Microsoft has already patched this vulnerability. Unless a 360 firmware down-grader is released, any 360 user who has signed into Xbox Live recently is unaffected by this breakthrough.
- m00nstone, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9So it's a choice between 360 homebrew and XBL. I think most people that really explored the xbox1 mod scene, would take the hombrew... hands down!
- geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"on top of that, the PS3 lacks out of order execution, and lacks other sources of speed."
You do know that the XBox 360's PPC cores are also in-order; in fact, the differences between the PPC970 in the CELL core and the three Xenon in the 360's core are very minuscule, and this was done on purpose to allow the two processors to be incredibly easy to develop; just drop in the PPC core and patch whatever else logic your company needs onto it. As for the whole "lacks other sources of speed", doesn't every computer lack "other sources of speed" once you've spoken of it's GPU and CPU, bus speeds and memory speeds? What other "sources of speed" do you exactly need anyways, the CELL has 6 active SPEs which are mad fast little buggers once you figure out how to efficiently turn them on, load them with data and move to the next.
Then again, the platform as a whole totally bites, but at least it's open. - jron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4this is huge news, even if downgrading becomes a problem (and I don't think it will, assuming you are quick to buy a 360) the hypervisor has been busted wide open. I would assume that from this hack, a great deal of previously unknown information can be discovered... perhaps even the key used to sign code? As mentioned earlier, this hack is useless to those running their 360 online or those who have installed newer games. Their kernel is already updated. However, those who have the older kernel before the efuse was blown, can remove the R6T3 resistor that controls the efuses which lock the kernel from being downgraded. The real question is, can microsoft remotely detect if an efuse is blown or not. If not, a modchip can be created which switches between the current and hacked kernel. interesting stuff for sure.
- sexycommando, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"Personally, I'd rather go for homebrew and XBLA through XNA :)"
Me too. Wake me up when that happens. - goldenratio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3re: appleguru's comment: i can't tell if there is any solid evidence that "m$ blew an efuse", but in the least, it is possible for them to do such a thing:
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2004/08/02/ibm_efuse/ - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Sweet! now I can finally harness all the power the x360 offers and run an NES emulator on it. No but seriously.. all jokes aside this is great for executing a homebrew XBMC type app. to decode x264, this rules!
- benitojuarez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Ill hold on to that money, come on you can trust me.
- QuiescentWonder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2There is a voltage spike on the eFuse line, sounds like enough evidence to me that they blew an eFuse. He's right, and it does prevent kernel downgrading. I'm not sure why he was attacked for it.
- heinousjay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I don't think it's a matter of not realizing it's an attempt at a joke. It's just an old joke, and it was only funny the first few million times it was in a comment somewhere on the web.
- jull1234, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Not to mention that pirating games is an ***** move.
- McGrude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"unassigned" code? Do you mean "unsigned code" perhaps?
- AntBing, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8How low can I go? Come on trolls! Show your stuff!
and
@EGO- VLC player and MythTv run nice...thats all I'm worried about right now. - graemee, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4XBOX1 softmods work the same way, live does not work after the mod. Too bad, so sad, but I like XBMC more than LIVE access. I would gladly for go LIVE just to get a 360 version.
- appleguru, on 10/12/2007, -14/+16Only problem is m$ blew an efuse (which are on the cpu die) with one of their recent kernel upgrades... which makes downgrading impossible if you have the latest updates/have been on xbox live lately.
- verifex, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Vulnerability patched, so unless you happen to have one of the transitory versions between the initial release sometime in October when the flaw was first introduced, and now when they patched it, then there will be no homebrew. Back to the drawing board.
- sexycommando, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6nah, Microsoft is equally as fast when there is a vulnerability to DRM/content protection on Windows. Security holes? not so much
- bqw371, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Be patient. This post lays out how the hypervisor works inside the 360. Read carefully and you will see information is present on how to gain control of said piece of software... It will just be a matter of time before hacking teams around the world start putting the pieces together & unite to attempt variations of this hack...time and time again... until the 360 runs unassigned code.
- estvir, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3> k most people that really explored the xbox1 mod scene, would take the hombrew
No way. Live on the original Xbox was meh but on 360 it's quite awesome.
I was one of those who 'really explored' the Xbox1 scene, aka, I XBMC, Linksbox with a modded keyboard, tried Linux on it, tried WinCE on it, etc. It will take a hell of a lot to make me choose homebrew of Live. D: - piratearggghhh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Vulnerability loophole has also been closed with earlier consoles via red rings of death, so there really is no problem.
- QuiescentWonder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1cockaroachie: There isn't planned black case or HDMI for 360 and the quieter BenQ drives are already shipping with 360s, now is your time to buy unless you really want to wait for the manufacturing process to change down... which won't affect anything but power consumption and heat produced.
- gateway, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1xbmc would be great, but prob alot of work from moving from intel to ppc chip.. not that its not doable but prob some time before you would see this provided you can with this exploite.. im crossing fingers!
- PunkRampant, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2But you're forced to download Microsoft's updates and patches, or else sacrifice your Xbox Live access... right? Even if homebrew is possible, as soon as an update is released you would be banned from Live until your box is patched.
- QuiescentWonder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Oh, and also. Here are a bunch of posts by people who are trying to figure out how to run homebrew on the 360 (xboxhacker) discussing the blown eFuse. If any of you question this sites credibility, this site is where a lot of the original hacks for Xbox 1 came from along with the beginning of the firmware hacks for 360.

Read the entire thread, but this is the post: http://www.xboxhacker.net/index.php?topic=6529.msg40773#msg40773 - Comp1demon, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6Couldn't edit in time - here is the thread to support his claims. - http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=495800&referid=&highlight=efuse
- enforcerpsu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hypervisor, doesn't the master chief wear that?
- trash64, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1homebrew was awesome on xbox1 because u could make ur xbox a dvr media center, stream music, view pics and a ton of other thigns which the 360 now does. Hence... I don't see any point in homebrew for the 360 or consoles anymore. Just enjoy the system for the games.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@kethraal:
Microsoft may sell the core system at a loss, but they easily make up for it with a controller or two. You have to spend $40 just to get a 1080p capable video cable (RGB15) for crying out loud. - dacheetah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Damn, my 360 has been at my fioncee's place (with no internet connection) for a while. IIRC it's last update would have been JUST after they fixed that.
Oh well, no homebrew for me yet... - powlol, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Maybe someone can answer this, but I understand why m$ wouldn't want pirated copies of games to be played, but why are they so up tight about allowing "unsigned" code on it.
Then they act like they are protecting their consumers when they add all these patches that fix their "vulnerabilities". They could spend more time keeping xbox live running. Never thought I'd say this, but sony seems to have the right idea w/ the option of linux, probably not for the right reasons however - knodi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1So close yet to far away.
- AntBing, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4Blu-ray does look quite nice. You're right, I would have bought one even if it didn't play games. Come to think of it most games out right now are ***** anyway and I still like the thing....and you did mention the fact that Sony gimped my video card.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5do you have anything to backup that comment or is this another rumor?
- CamZak, on 10/12/2007, -7/+7You sir, have just made my night. Shame others don't realize it's humor.
- twelvedogs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@camzak
Eh, i've tried it, you want more like 800mhz with at least 128m ram to run dvd rips through vlc comfortably, 500mhz chugs too much with high rez. - Cinin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2It's got to be getting close now! Hopefully this well be the start of what happened to the PSP. Even though I would rather have code run on the Wii. Well props to anyone that got this to work.
- kethraal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Because they sell the 360's at a loss, and make the money up on licensing the XBox brand to developers. It costs boatloads of $$ to get a game signed by MS, and that's where MS makes their money (albeit still not enough to cover production.)
Homebrew completely bypasses MS's revenue stream (in addition to allowing people to use the XBox without DRM, which is, as far as they are concerned, evil evil evil.) - Kenada, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I agree with that, not everyone wants to "pirate" video games, the whole point of hacking something is to see how much power it really has and how much more it can do. Yet every one wants to jump right on the pirate band wagon. I don't care for Live myself, I have used it on both systems, and just don't care for it. Also I don't believe that you should have to pay even more money to play a game on-line, after buying the hardware, software, etc etc. If I can play my movies with out being locked down to one peace of software the better I think it is. Just like Macs for the most case, you are stuck with what they have, and your choices are very few, but with open source/homebrew, you don't have to wait on a big company to fix errors and make improvements.
my 2 cents worth, need change? - cockaroachie, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I'd like to get one, but they keep adding on things that make me want to wait. Quieter dvd drive, smaller chip, HDMI, black case? When will it end? When it comes time to buy one the rumors that the 720 will already be making me wait for that.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -13/+12What? Microsoft's products have holes in them? At least my Windows ME is still airtight!
Ah, I'd love to get Fedora onto a 360. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I wouldn't want you to have to go through the trouble of handling two transactions. So, once he sends me the money.. screw it, you'll never see me again.
- CamZak, on 10/12/2007, -9/+8So, who else is now thinking about buying a 360? Linux on the 360 would be the ultimate dream. Video + surfing + MAME.
- m00nstone, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2I guarantee you the downgrade problem will be a very small hurdle. XBMC360 here we come!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0nice story...liked it
- SayeSayno, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1... yeah ok. Don't forget to tighten up the graphics.
