So, evidently, it is possible to add a homosexuality reference to any sentence or word to make it an insult.
Seriously, this sort of console war is a perennial occurrence. It just shows that corporations can brand a product so well that people feel personally insulted whenever the product is even rumoured to be flawed.
Advice: buy whatever the Hell you want to buy. Play it; let the facts/games speak for themselves. What might be a flaw said by one person may never be encountered by another person.
Although I advise consumer discretion when picking out a console, PC or any appliance whatsoever to buy-- mindless name calling, speculation, uppity offence and defence doesn't help any one and just segregates the gaming community in to a stupid brand-name led schism.
News flash: all the consoles will have their strengths and weaknesses. - obby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Talk about even more bad publicity for Microsoft. That'll teach them not to rush things, again."
Coming May 2006 Windows Vista! - Netmindstorm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Sour grapes....I've compared it to my 3 other dvd players and it works just as fine and the upscaling to 720p or 1080i is more than acceptable. Could a dedicated scaler (e.g. Faroudja) produced better results...sure, but as a 480i/480p DVD player it works great, and as one that upscales to 720p or higher, it delivers given its price.
- tcybulski, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2just looked it up... it appears as if the 360 uses a standard sata dvd drive. I don't know if you can replace it, but it appears to be a standard thing. however, i think quality may be a function of both the drive and whatever decoding chipset they have installed.
- zarathos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The drive has a standard SATA data connector, but the power connector is proprietary. Though, I'm positive it won't be long before someone figures out how to get the power to go where it needs to go so a replacement can be made.
- tolbs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1more FUD. It plays DVD's fine, but if you really want the digital experience get a upscaling player with DVI/HDMI
- darthleppard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1girth:
"it may be because i am playing dvds that are hd."
really? hmm...are those on the market yet? i haven't seen any... typical dvd's are not HD. - igibson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1the dvd playback is perfect, no problems for me - and replacing the dvd drive would not affect playback, it is the software running the dvd player that would change its performance
- truk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I doubt the problem is with the physical dvd drive. Instead it would be with the dvd playing codec it uses. You might replace the drive, but the problem would still exist.
- TimmyK., on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Is anybody who is serious about wanting high quality DVD playback at all interested in using a PS2/Xbox/Xbox 360 as a DVD player? I mean if you care that much I think you can afford to go get a stand alone player. They're dirt cheap for even really good players. The player I bought for $70 last year is better than the one I bought for $400 six years ago. Unless the quality is as bad as you can possibly get I don't think anyone who is using it for their only DVD player will care if they even notice.
- Oriole27, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1autok2, not true. S-Video and Composite can't upscale.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1First off, swapping out the drive would do nothing. Quality depends on the software used for playback.
And while I have no 360 to test, are you sure it upscales? I remember reading somewhere that it doesn't. - Oriole27, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1XBOX 360 can upscale to 720p/1080i using component? Most upscaling DVD players use HDMI or DVI for that.
- shadowsurfr1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Talk about even more bad publicity for Microsoft. That'll teach them not to rush things, again.
- kriegs, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I just love how quick some people are saying the ps3 will be the best. there hasnt been any 100% OFFICIAL info on it. just some possible "tech specs" and sony changing their minds daily.
- NekoFever, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Considering that both the standard Xbox and the PS2 have had crappy DVD playback this doesn't surprise me at all. When they make a loss on consoles the best we'll get is software playback which is always going to look worse than a dedicated hardware decoder like you'd get in even a cheap DVD player. They're never more than a backup in case something goes wrong with my dedicated DVD player.
And considering how hideous DVDs look on a PS2 I'm not exactly gagging for the PS3 BR playback. That's assuming that isn't just rhetoric like most of their stuff seems to be. - vhold, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1From microsoft's site.
"But Xbox 360 is also the center of your digital entertainment world. Not only will it play DVDs, but the system supports CDs, DVD-ROMs, DVD-R/RW, MP3s, JPEGs, and more."
My only question would be, is it worse then the super el cheapo $40 DVD players? If that's the case, then it's definitely worth pointing out that the XBOX 360 DVD player sucks. - FlareSpot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have a 360 and started watching my firefly series on it and it worked fine. Actually it worked a lot better than my current vcr/dvd combo player. Plus i was impressed that I could still access my 360 dashboard while playing my episodes. It paused the movie for me so I can see who is online and everything. I can talk to them at the same time if I want
- Odwalla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Implying that a user blog/journal at ArsTechnica is an official ArsTechnica story/review is prety ridiculous.
All this is really, is some user at ArsTechnica claiming, based on his non-scientific testing, that he doesn't feel the XBox360 DVD playback is as good as what his Samsung DVD player can accomplish. There's no testing methodology, no side-by-side comparison pictures, nothing. It's two paragraphs of personal opinion on a blog. - tcybulski, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1For everyone that says the DVD works fine: its not a matter of whether it works or not, but whether it works enough to be the center of a home entertainment center like m-dollar wants it to be. I'm wondering if anyone with an HD set and a nice set of speakers has tried out the 360 as a hub. Because if it works out, that makes the 360 much more attractive.
- energyblue, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2DVD works fine, people are just looking for problems that ain't there.
- duntuk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0not sure about the "taking over the world" part...
but agree with the rest...
people complaining that the "graphics suck" are:
1. most likely NOT have it attached to a quality HDTV set (using 42" panasonic plasma here)
2. are NOT using the component (HDTV) wires ... (and no... composite (crap) wires are NOT component)
3. have bad vision
4. or all of the above...
and unless you're running an ATI x1800, or nvidia 7800 on a high end pc, you're not going to match the ALL graphic abilities of the xbox 360... - EmmEff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Uhh, is there anything GOOD about the 360 to report?
- NSXROX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's probably a Thompson drive like the ones everyone had to replace in their gen-1 XBox
- todfather, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Not sure why everyone is so bitter. I own a 360, it works great on my 52" 1080p capable TV and new kick ass sound system. It sounds like we have some people that couldn't afford to get one, now trying to justify to themselves why their still whacking their puds looking at low resolution everything.
Microsoft is taking over the world... just deal with it. - pyromonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I burnt a bunch of video previews to show a friend yesterday, I popped it in his Xbox 360 and it froze, skipped, and stuttered. At first I thought it was just a bad DVD, then I threw it in the slim PS2, worked like a charm. Of course it's not a $400 dollar DVD player, but at least matching the DVD player of current gen systems would be nice.
- TimmyK., on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Ps3=1
Rev.=2
360=-3!! pice of *****
less than 1 month to see what the ps3 can do in real time."
I'd just like to know where you got your hands on a PS3 and Revolution so that you could test them all, compare them faitly, and come to this. Oh wait, you probably haven't even seen a 360 in person yet. Oh and you are just a moron who cares more about the system a game is on than the game itself. Well from someone with a 360 sitting right by his TV (and standing directly next to my PS2 and about 10 inches from my Gamecube and Xbox) I can comfortably say that so far it is a great game machine, and also that...
you=imbecile. - betterth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"The 360 is a bad purchase choice anyway. Between the crashes, the dvd player issues, the shallow marketing and the lack of decent games, I'll wait until either the price drops and good titles are released, or until a hobo throws one at my head."
The crashes, which of course have not been documented fully as to the cause and the actual percentage of machines faulty has not been found to be outside the realm of normal technology failure in the face of a 30 million unit launch.
The DVD quality is a single opinion, and has been debunked countless times -- Read the comments above. - autok2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oriole27, I think upscaling happens independently of the output connector.
- MoeB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yes you can replace the dvd player
- Infekted, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"less than 1 month to see what the ps3 can do in real time."
wasn't the PS3 release date cancelled? i thought i read it somewhere that something went wrong and it won't be released till 2007. might be just a rumor... i dont know. but can't wait for it tho. ;D
back to topic. i can hardly care about the DVD on 360.
if ever i bought the console, i bought it because i want to play games. isn't it the purpose of a Game Console? i mean the dvd, picture, music... all of those are just extra feature right?. i can watch movies on a standalone player or my computer. its just me, dont know about you guys. but for the movie fanatic who wants a great/excellent quality... then i guess this is a mojor problem... don't buy 360 then. i don't think it was made for a quality movie player. - interiot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0360 = not a hub unless you buy Media Center PC.
http://www.videora.com/en-us/Converter/Xbox360/video.html
Which is really kind of silly, since you can look at photos and audio without Media Center PC. But no video. So, no, it's not a hub. - Oriole27, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You could replace the DVD player on the original XBOX I think.
- monolith, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0RAT-MAN. Yea, just as long as they are stupid enough to buy the privilege of owning a crappy DVD player. Look, I'm not going to by an XBOX 360... but I think this is getting a little ridiculous. The box won't really matter all that much unless it is total crap, it's the games stupid.
- acemilo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Works fine for me.
- Lynn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Mine is working great. It is much better than the Toshiba up-scaling DVD player I was using. The 360 outputs at 480p and I let my HDTV handle the up-scaling.
- Squill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Just remove the "DVD player" sucks part from this topic and they could have just summed it up.
- tacroy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0so....anyone have pics? Or is this all based um...nothing? This just in DVD's are really spaceships. I swear!
- OBSCENE, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1FagStation fan boys are just making up problems!
You just go ahead and play your ancient console.
Microsoft now has two consoles that are better than PS2. - mikepx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"The next generation of high-definition gaming and entertainment" focus on the gaming part people, that's what it's for. You still have a ***** load of expensive DVD players, DVD-Rs to bye and complain about. Ungrateful pr*cks!
- ag1010, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't have this problem with mines. I watched 5 movies off of it with no issues.
- starbird, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0At CompUSA checking out the new iMac G5, and toyed around with the XBox 360, and I had no problems getting to the menus, etc on Episode III DVD....
Looked good. - sdbryan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Unless the software can't keep up with the data rate there is not a digital difference when decoding DVD video for NTSC or PAL video. (There could be issues in the conversion from the digital to analog when presenting the signal to composite video output). On the other hand there is a lot that could go wrong as soon as you add the requirement to present progressive scan at 480, upscale to 720p or 1080i. That is all software magic trying to add picture elements that aren't in the data on the DVD. If you are displaying on an NTSC screen you shouldn't expect to see any difference. It is only higher resolution setups where a difference should appear.
The short version of that is if you are viewing on an NTSC screen don't be surprised if you don't see anything wrong with DVD playback from the Xbox360. - titanass, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Its a gaming console no matter what the MS execs say. Who cares about the dvd playback, if you dont already own a good dvd player then why the hell are you getting a 360 its a gaming console, idiots.
- gregcotten, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I expect it would be a problem with the DVD decoder because of the presence of artifacts is not usually associated with a physical disc reading issue.
- betterth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"The 360 Doesn't Offer anything that my PC doesn't, Thus i am Getting a Revolution and maybe a PS3"
I didn't realize the PS3 offered something beyond the 360 and PC? It's revolutionary capacity to play video games? Perhaps the fact it can (maybe) play blue-ray DVDs (with theoretically good quality).
Or perhaps the controller, you sure can't find a marvel of terrible ergonomic engineering on a computer or 360.
I think really, what you mean, is you can't find the "Sony PlayStation" logo on your PC or 360. Fortunately, we all see it right under a sign "Owned by:" on your forehead. - bobetr, on 11/27/2008, -0/+0im gonna wait till next year to get it anyways so hopefully theyll work out the kinks by then
- lordfoul, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0As posted above this is just a deinterlacing problem that ATI graphics has had since day one. I've seen this problem discussed before and it's old news just in an XBox360 container.
- hyperpasta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@ factionalism
Thank you. - rebrad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Looked great at 1080i and I don't even have pay per play like the Sony Bluray.
