- tehpwnerofn00bs, on 10/10/2007, -2/+80Let me guess: their GDP is $-15 per month per person.
- baldr, on 10/10/2007, -5/+65It should be written:
"World of Warcraft = 90th most populated country in the world"
seeing as the subscribers are not a country, the place they inhabit is... - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -12/+50So many virgins, so so many
- Rayonic, on 10/10/2007, -0/+31And taxes are really low, but the death rate is through the roof.
- Speedy7, on 10/10/2007, -2/+24With most of them here on digg
- Paroparo, on 10/10/2007, -4/+20Actually more than half of WoW players are not $15 per month subscribers, but guys from China who pay only a few cents per hour.
- goettel, on 10/10/2007, -1/+17Of the WoW-players I know: two were married, one is getting married in two months, one has a kid, one has two kids, one is shagging her WoW mate, two are single - but occasionally shagging strangers (who might play WoW for all I know). For the rest I wouldn't BELIEVE even firm proof of virginity.
- Satanael, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14As funny as it would be if you were right, it's even funnier that some households (parents and children together) play WoW.
- ICSU, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12$15 per month sounds like a couple of cents per hour to me.
- joyleaf, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12Suddenly, I feel like not being able to cast spells is one of my incapacities.
- VeryBoredNow, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11No you can also kill wild hogs!! MORON Jeez!
- jblade, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10if this is true, MySpace would be the 8th most populated country, and we all know how ugly that would turn out. But, on the bright side, I am sure stock in glitter companies would go up.
- Royal0, on 10/10/2007, -2/+119 Million people Play WoW. Spreading out in different realms makes it innacurate?
- datastorageguy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Apparently humor is a tough subject for you to grasp.
- Scofield6, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7You're completely wrong. Here - look at how Blizzard defines "subscriber"
http://www.blizzard.com/press/070724.shtml "World of Warcraft's Subscriber Definition World of Warcraft subscribers include individuals who have paid a subscription fee or have an active prepaid card to play World of Warcraft, as well as those who have purchased the game and are within their free month of access. Internet Game Room players who have accessed the game over the last thirty days are also counted as subscribers. The above definition excludes all players under free promotional subscriptions, expired or cancelled subscriptions, and expired prepaid cards. Subscribers in licensees’ territories are defined along the same rules."
That 9 million figure is NOT the total amount of accounts opened since they've started the game - they're specifically exluding "all players under free promotional subscriptions, expired or cancelled subscriptions, and expired prepaid cards. Subscribers in licensees’ territories are defined along the same rules" - taintedzodiac, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9How is "running around collecting things" any different from real life? It's a rat race whether you're in front of a computer or sitting at a reception desk.
- hmunkey, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7It is 9 million simultaneously...
There are currently 9 million people paying their fee every month for WoW. - goettel, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6"According to some information from the9.com".
- FinnNorway, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6we don't have to, your kids will roll wow-gamers before they've dinged 15.
(we need paladins, can you bring the message?) - donnyburnside, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Seriously guy - CounterStrike died years ago. Let it be.
- trg100, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8But surely "World of Warcraft" is a world, not a country anyway! ;)
- hmunkey, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7About 500,000, go to their site to see.
- Godzmarine, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6You can look up definitions in a dictionary.
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/country - joebrender, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Glad to say the game keeps on going. I had to give it up in order to have a good real life. Like most MMO's, WoW requires 10-30 hours a week.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6How many play at a GIVEN TIME?
- mharroun, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6The disclaimer states it does NOT count Trial accounts or expired/inactive accounts.
- LordSlashstab, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5and that's how they get you hooked. Just like a crack dealer, "first hit is for free"
- pig13, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Yeah, married people don't have sex.
- jp3550, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6I have a trial edition cd, if you would like to join us.
- SergeiGolos, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7Yeah but in real life as you run around and do things, the world can be effected. in WOW.. well you are just helping America reach high and high rates of obesity.
For all you who play, get up go out side and see if you can still do a sit up, a push up, and a pull up. Hit me back with a result. - plhearn, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6You're not fooling anyone.
- Narwaffle, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Reminds me of this.
http://xkcd.com/256/ - TechCF, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Well it was huge fun going exploring with my friends, camping, defeating bosses, planning tactical stuff, sharing things... but after two years I decided the thing was used up
- VANOS, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Or you can just not give a ***** about what the other "Warcrack" like players think and just play it for fun. It sounds to me like your version of WoW is a second job, and "keeping up with the Jones of Ogrimmar."
- origon, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5In order to be a subscriber i guess you need a subscription? Therefore active accounts, but maybe not active players :)
- satanatnmtedu, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5This is better how?
Hangover from drinks. Skin cancer from the sun. Can't have sex with chicks since they tend to explode and feathers are pointy. - hmunkey, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5They include anyone who is paying at the time. WoW is the largest game worldwide at the moment.
- napierj, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7@slayersharpe, pot calling the kettle black I think. Only virgins, think calling someone a virgin is an insult. I play Wow, and I have sex before I play, with a woman even! I'm also married, and the 25 or so other men and women I play with regularly, the guild, are also married, and most likely have sex as well.
- LADIESCREVICE, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4135 million a month in subscriber fees
- c0ldfusi0n, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5So, let's think about that for an instant.
Providing Blizzard's stats are accurate and lists only actual active accounts (which I doubt).
Buying WoW (Original Game) = $60 * 9,000,000 = 540,000,000
Buying BC (Expansion) = $60 * 9,000,000 = 540,000,000
Monthly Charge = $15 * 9,000,000 = 135,000,000
So, with the sole sales of the actual game, they made about $1, 080, 000, 000. With recurring payment, they make $135, 000, 000 monthly. That's pretty impressive. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3around the same with counter strike then.
- FinnNorway, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4I wish I had the willpower to bring it down to 8 999 999 again. But I'm too weak... *muuuuust loooog in* *muuuust geeeet that niiiiice axe*
- xiuxiu, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Isn't this a reflection of current realities? The few are the priveleged enough to pursue what they want while the majority (goldminers) are slaves to their ecenomic situations?
- greendelta, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3You and the article you're linking to are making the same mistake; You're assuming that the9 and Blizzard are talking about the same kind of numbers, and that you can therefore get the real number by subtracting the two. Blizzard states in their press releases that they are only counting active, paying accounts, and I'm inclined to believe them. Why? If you look at the financial report from the9 for the end of 2006, they claim "6.8 million paid accounts had been activated", which is probably meant the way you believe and includes everyone who has ever tried the game in China. But if you then look at Blizzard's "8 million subscribers" press release dated January 11 2007, they only say "more than 3.5 million players in China". So obviously there's a lot of accounts they are not counting, probably because they are no longer active, as they are stating.

http://www.blizzard.com/press/070111.shtml - lsatkins, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I've always wondered if that is active subscriptions, or 9 million over the life of the game. I'm sure they are raking in tons of cash, but that would still make a big difference on how popular it is. Of the 6 people I work with that I know played, only 2 of them still play.
- KingGoonie, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Thats not true actually... well unless you count other things as some lol...
- fugazied, on 10/10/2007, -6/+8Thanks for reminding me to cancel my account!
- Cowprince, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I find your comment amusing since I've been married for two years and have a child on the way. The wife however doesn't care for games in general though so she doesn't play. I play with at least another 5 couples, my cousin and cousin-in law both play together on another server, she actually played through her pregnancy for the most part. I'd say about 20% of the people who play World of Warcraft are your basement geek. The other 50% are some sort of combination of married with or without kids, single or couple playing, college student or average joe. Those who make comments like this are either scared of the unknown, are misinformed or just have a vendetta against games in general and at the fact that people actually have fun playing together.
- parax, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3The idea is a lot less impressive if you consider the vast number of other arbitrary products and services you could slap a similar label on:
The number of pepsi drinkers, the number of WSJ subscribers, the number of RoadRunner subscribers, etc. - aywwts4, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Myspacetopia, Ruled by benevolant dictator Lord Murdoch, Would have the highest crime rate in the world, You would walk through customs and immidiately some white wannabe gangster thug would stab you in the chest, while 3 pregnant 14 year olds look on cheering.
