- Shirk, on 10/12/2007, -5/+103"So what does that make you?"
The correct answer is... A 12yr old who's parents won't pay for WoW so he plays Runescape on the computers at the library. - Zzyw, on 10/12/2007, -5/+91Only a fool would deny WoW is the best game in the world...
...of warcraft. - oskite, on 10/12/2007, -11/+62Thats complicated math! So why do your writing still sucks!!!!!!
Besides: it's 1.21 gigabucks. Duh. - S1ngular1ty1, on 10/12/2007, -20/+62ehh, call me when you reach 1% and I still won't care.
- tapo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+40Ahh, because if you can finally get those ***** to quit playing WoW, they'll immediately go party every single night of their lives, do three chicks at the same time, work at an orphange, and finally earn their doctorate.
Listen, WoW is entertainment. If you over indulge in it, it's bad. But it's not any worse than reading Digg or watching TV. - DBiz, on 10/12/2007, -5/+41It'd be interesting to know the accumulated total hours played around the world since launch.
Talk about mind-boggling. - jer2eydevil88, on 10/12/2007, -2/+38I wouldn't call it a "hunk of crap" although waste of time and addictive might describe it well.
- TxDr, on 10/12/2007, -4/+36@ fraggle35
I wouldn't exactly call it lonliness persay. (Ex-Addict until Nov.2006)
Led a guild with my fiance, finishing up my BS in Bio-Chem, and I work at the hospital.
Most of *my* guildies have significant others. (There are some loners, but that's everywhere, whether WoW existed or not). Normal people just like anyone else you meet on the street.
It's the mentality that all gamers are geeks/losers. Just like all black people can dance, all asians can do math, etc. etc. However, I'm willing to bet that many reading this plays games themselves, and the majority of them aren't lonely.
I think there's a site up called facesofwow? Not saying they're all winners, but most of them are normal everyday individuals.
You're just pushing a stereotype. - Hale, on 10/12/2007, -4/+30The guys at work wouldn't let you join their guild, huh?
- Dvoid, on 10/12/2007, -9/+34A basement reject/12 year old boy who quit WoW.
- sishgupta, on 10/12/2007, -4/+28DiggerT: Simply because they can make a killing....twice.
Dbiz:
Going along with the above idea of total hours played, I think it is an interesting thought to imagine the total hours played and then how they could be applied otherwise.
Since it is reasonably easy to get to level 60, and a large percentage have at least one level 60 and a smaller percentage has more than one 60 it wouldn't be unreasonable to estimate the number of 60's at 7-8mil. Now lets say it takes 10 days to get one 60 (actual times vary greatly so I'd guesstimate 10 days average)
a little math:
10*24 = 240 hours
240*7mil = 1,680,000,000
So assuming that 7 million people leveled to 60 and then stopped playing, at least 1.5 billion hours of world of warcraft have been played. If you factor in all the endgame content and time it takes to get things like tier 0-3 one could easily double this number (3 billion hours?)
What can you do with 3 billion hours? I've got no clue, but what I can tell you...is that i've contributed my fair share of those hours =D - unloud, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21Money does not equal quality.
- Charlotte_Web, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19It's a Matrix-like existence where people willingly give themselves to the Matrix.
Maybe if the Archtect had created a WoW-style world, he wouldn't have had so many people trying to get out. - unloud, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17I can see this catching on with financial statements: "Starbucks earns 77 Gigabucks in 2006"
- DiggerT, on 10/12/2007, -5/+20with that many users why do they even need to charge for the expansion?, they should just release it for free they are making a killing with the monthly fee anyway.
- Valkarie70, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15Gigabucks...you might just have the start of something there oskite
- SirBryce, on 10/12/2007, -6/+20So what does that make you?
- TyRaNNOus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14Ya probably the most over used joke ever. Everquest called they want their stereotype back.
- Markpdotcom, on 10/12/2007, -2/+148 Million subscribers! Who knew there were so many 30 year old virgins in the world! ;)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13He cared enough to ask for a call when 1% is reached
- Settra, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Isn't every product that is purchasable technically a moneymanking scheme?
- scalded, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14"Why digg down MeatBiProduct? There are a lot of people who play who do fit into that generic description."
Because it's stereotyping. I personally know of many happy WoW players with jobs, college classes, spouses, law firms, and the like. - Shirk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11"So far, no online game currency has been recognized as having any equivalent value for any real currency."
Then what's all that junk about Second Life? - Azimuth1, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11It is a fantastic game. But like all things, you just grow tired of it eventually. I played from April 2005 to February 2006.
- Charlotte_Web, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11He cared enough to read this thread, anyway... :-P
- jer2eydevil88, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10With that post the other day that there will be 30 million more men than women in China... I think its safe to bet at least half of that will be interested in this game.
- Frankie4Fingers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9What if you do all of those things? I play WoW, watch tv and read Digg. I also have a wife of 10 years, two kids and travel every week for my job. It doesn't take much to play games as well as lead a normal life.
- Satanael, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8You've been converted, I take it....
- Ninjin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Considering a large portion of the Chinese market remains untapped, it will be interesting to see if these numbers increase consistently in the future.
As for people who post negative personal opinions of WoW, from an objective perspective, they must be doing something right, even if it's just marketing. - freedompower, on 10/12/2007, -26/+33hmm, 8 million x 15$ = 120$ millions...
Thats 1.44 billion a year! So why do the game still sucks!!!!!! - caddoo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9http://zombiesloveburningcrusade.ytmnd.com/
- nicerobot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7@Sis, The average time is probably more like 15 days but I think your point is generally correct. People spend a *****-load of time playing WoW worldwide.
Personally, I think online gaming is reasonable social interaction. Probably not as good as joining clubs and doing things with them but at least as good as hanging out at the mall with friends. - tizz66, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I don't understand why there's such vitriol towards WoW and its players here. WoW is a game, one of many 'unconstructive' things people can choose to do with their time. It is ENTERTAINMENT. Same as watching TV, posting on forums, reading a book, etc. Now there's some people who let it control their lives, and that's sad, but it certainly isn't representative of everyone playing. I play WoW regularly and I have fun doing it. Why do you have a problem with me playing it, as opposed to watching DVD's or one of the many other ways people entertain themselves?
People who say it's a waste of time miss the point. As for it not giving you any skills, on the contrary I believe it can help improve communication skills (when orders/comments need to be given very quickly and clearly) and also improves teamwork skills because many of the games goals cannot be met unless you work as a perfect team. Tell me how TV does either of those. - MeatBiProduct, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I think southpark represented them best.
- Jugalator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6It's just that media loves to report tragedies, not exactly stories of "I gained new friends in real-life thanks to WoW". It's basically like reading a hardware forum. Regardless hardware, you're likely to get the impression it sucks because you only see one side of the coin with mostly support questions and complaints.
- Ninjin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6So far, no online game currency has been recognized as having any equivalent value for any real currency. Even if it were the case, many countries do not store gold as a currency standard anymore. The United States abandoned the gold standard in 1933 (I think).
Casinos have to have a certain amount of currency on hand because their patrons are theoretically capable of winning money in a casino. - Satanael, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Oh you're on to something now...
/sarcasm - sachmanb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5a friend at blizzard (from ucla) offered me a free subscription to this game, and i'm glad i turned him down. i get addicted to cinnamon glazed bagels... a never ending game is the last thing i need
- ByteGuerilla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4They're State Capitalists - they want to tax everything.
- tapo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I agree, the game does eventually become rather dull as the content began to wear out. At level 60, there were assorted quests in uninteresting zones that you could complete for money, and raids. And raids required a schedule. So gradually your friends drop, and then you drop as well.
From what I've seen of Burning Crusade however, the game has managed to capture interest again. If you have friends that enjoy(ed) WoW, pick it up and give it a shot. Maybe it'll be worth subscribing again. - Navitron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4You know I have to agree with you it they make so much money off there subscriptions why would they charge for an expansion why not just implement it for free...
$20 for WoW, *$50 when I bought it :/ *
$15 a month for subscription
+$40 for a expansion
So many other MMORPG's just have there game client free for download and only charge the monthly rate. Theres MMO's that make 50x less money then blizzard but can crank out quality expansions for free.
2 Months since I let my account run out and I really have no incentive to play again. Maybe WOW2? I dunno. Just not for the measly expansion pack thats way overpriced. - Spoonicus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Prediction.. Blizzard buys Sealand.
- TxDr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@unit101
I did not realize that all other games were designed not to "waste" time.
Here I was thinking games were leisure activites. Thanks for clearing things up. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I don't see why everyone thinks people from WoW have no lives. Even when i was playing wow I had plenty of friends at school. I even left my room to do things with them. OMIGOSH.
- epileet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4best game ive ever played
biggest waste of time ever
quiting was no brainer - csulok, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3for the hundredth zillionth time:
the chinese dont pay $15 / month, they pay per hour and the average playtime gives them roughly 10% of the us & eu monthly fee.
do your math again. - Ninjin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Well I can't exactly take Second Life currency into a bank and get USD.
Also many transactions such as buying gold are not technically legal, because all in-game items and currency are property of the game's operators. - Orlex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Haha I was in a guild and there were like 20 people who were in the army. In fact, my guild leader was worried about getting court marshalled because he'd always be like 2 hours late for duty because he'd wanna finish up an instance (dungeon) with the guild. Two of the officers were also a husband and wife who were both fire fighters.
- N1XUK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3WOW is the only PC game i bought and now pay for every month. Usually im playing on my DS online for free ;) *cough cough*
But for the £8.99 im paying a month i want more, either drop it to £4.99 for the current package or for the same £8.99 give little extras like a WOW IM cross server client, WOW my space thing, a yourcharecternamehere@youerserver.wow.com etc
With social groups being so huge now on the net (flcker, digg, facebook, myspace) blizzard need to expand the community a little further. - 3zero3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Word.
I thought it was nerd city when I first tried playing it. But it's a lot more engaging than watching ***** TV shows. You have to work with a market economy, make friends, learn certain techniques and methods and gain favor in groups. How many 15 year old losers out there think they are too cool too play WoW but have none of the aforementioned skills? A lot.
I'm someone, had you met out on the street, you would never, ever take for a WoW player. -
