- Rudigity, on 10/12/2007, -24/+79Why is this game so popular? I've honestly never played it so I don't get what the big deal is. can everyone that plays this game digg me down so I can see the extent of this game's popularity???
- vafada, on 10/12/2007, -5/+58where were you in the last 2 years? in space?
- valharick, on 10/12/2007, -6/+58It's a fun killer of time. Some people watch TV for 3 or 4 hours a night; I play Wow for 2 and am talking to friends (most I know, others I just know from gaming). More social and engaging than TV (IMO anyways).
- masona3, on 10/12/2007, -3/+44"My friend in my computer class did a whole Powerpoint presentation on Burning Crusade."
I bet he's quite the ladies man. - RG13, on 10/12/2007, -3/+34or if you just bought it,
2,399,999 friends gained! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+28If pot was addictive, you'd have made a great point.
Unfortunately, you're dumb as hell. - MeatBiProduct, on 10/12/2007, -25/+48popular and filled with asshat rejects and kids.
oh yah and parents that need to stop raiding and WATCH THEIR CHILDREN.
Yah I said it. - Rodalli, on 10/12/2007, -2/+25That number will be at 2,400,001 after I get out of class tonight.
- natertots, on 10/12/2007, -0/+23This explains the recent drop in activity on digg.
- opiv421, on 10/12/2007, -9/+312.4 million friends lost.
- reed311, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22There's nothing pitiful about engaging in an activity with your friends. I moved half-way across the country and WoW is a good way for me and my friends to still "hang out" even though we live over 1,000 miles apart.
- SLIPSTR3AM, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19It's all moderation, bro. I still play, and talk to the womenfolk, and get out for work, play, etc. Not to mention, I play mostly with my real life friends, and a few others I've never actually met are just in the guild, but we talk on Vent/Skype. It's still being social. I'm personally sick and tired of being ridiculed by other friends who think that the only people who play this game have to be losers at life. This simply is not true. Some play/watch sports. I play WoW. Why should I get penalized? At least I'm interacting with people rather than just sitting in front of SportsCenter all night. [that was not a jab at those that moderate their sports watching, it was towards the ones that neglect their home/work life.]

Don't ever start playing WoW. It's like the devil. It will control your soul and you will never ever be able to let go. I have see many people turn from nice caring people into soulless hate filled people with hatred for anyone who doesn't play it. I beg of you, don't become another one of them. Seriously my brothers play it and they haven't seen the outside world in probably around 3 weeks, and people may say they won't let it control them but it controls even the strongest of us. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16NERF BLIZZARD!
- Boor, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13"popular and filled with asshat rejects and kids.

That is what we like to call "Baby Aggro". It has ruined many a raid. - valharick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10That's 2.5M in North America and Europe. North America has something like 3M subscribers, I'm not sure about Europe; So we're talking 2.4M/~4M. That's even more impressive.
- vafada, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11@TheFinestShadow
As CriticalImpact adviced, better stay away from WoW while you haven't played it.
110 days played on my account (almost 1/3 of a year playing WoW), yeah im a certified loser :( - Shuk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11As a former WoW player, I quit after I started University. After a year and a half, I am hearing the call of the World of Warcraft again!
The game is very addictive, mainly because of the psychological "strings" it pulls. The game's mechanic basically revolves around killing things to get stronger, to get better equipment in order to kill stronger things. However, WoW succeeds over other MMOs because the end-game goals that are available, such as Battlegrounds, Guild Raiding, etc. As well, the in-depth lore, diversity of equipment, spells, etc. and the opportunity of new places to explore makes leveling fun instead of boring.
As well, the one ingenious thing Blizzard does to increase game sales is that any crappy computer can play it. You don't need a quad-core, 8800GTXs in SLI configuration, with 2 gigs of ram to play it. Blizzard is one of the few companies that can make games look amazing with few polygons. - Cathab, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I love how everybody is talking about WoW like it's concentrated evil in a box, that when opened, will steal your soul and completely destroy your social / family network for ever, due to it's horrible addictive properties.
Granted, my highest level character is only level 35, however people really need to stop blaming a videogame for those people who CHOOSE to quit their job, divorce their wife, and all those horrible things to play the game. It isn't the game's fault, it's the persons.
It's a strange phenomenon, actually. People can become addicted to many things that *most* of us consider harmless: Alcohol, painkillers, etc, yet people don't associate those things as life-destroying substances nearly as often as WoW is. - petersms, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Wow, I got to level 60 with my guild and we talked on Vent while we played. At least half of the people in my guild were girls. Or really feminine sounding boys. No. NO. They were chicks. They sounded hot, though. Well, wait, what were we talking about again?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11@CriticalImpact
Just because your brothers fail at time management and prioritizing, doesn't mean that everybody that plays will instantly turn into a fat lifeless drain on society. Grow a brain. - shuby1569, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8@MeatBiProduct
It may be true that its pathetic that people meet like that over the internet... but when I used to play people in my guild actually had phone numbers and other such contacts and would get together and hang out. I guess you could say online gaming is a meeting for people with a common interest. - Bosiljevac, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Actually you tend to eat less when you play the game because you forget about everything else going on around you.
- TheFinestShadow, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9@tidu
Halo 2 sold the same amount of copies in it's first 24 hours. Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halo_2#Development
"The game sold 2.4 million copies and earned up to US$125 million in its first 24 hours on store shelves"
Onto the topic, heh, I kind of expected some big sales out of this game. My friend in my computer class did a whole Powerpoint presentation on Burning Crusade. As for me, I actually haven't played WoW yet, but I'm sure once I start playing, I will be addicted. I plan to try it one day.
Yes, I'm a sad, sheltered creature. - gquicho, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Very true. I lost about 15 pounds in a month on the WoW diet...
and along with those pounds, my girlfriend, a number of pals and my tolerance to sunlight. Gah. - Spo8, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9I'm not too surprised, TBC is fantastic. Finally some unique quests, instead of the boring, average "go here and kill this many" crap.
And as for the WoW bashing, I'm surprised Warcraft catches so much ***** when it's just like any other good game. Those who let themselves get so caught up in it that their social lives disappear are just as likely to have that happen with any other game, be it Oblivion, Counter-Strike, or otherwise. Hate the player, not the game... - tobleronian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6It is effectively potent heroine boxed and on disc, im actually scared to play it. :P
- Mossman85, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I'm glad Jack Bauer recently left China or else they would of used him to farm for gold in the Burning Crusade.
- RG13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@ slipstream
i totally have to agree...WoW can be really great in moderation. Its just so hard to moderate (at least for me). And it really used to piss me off when my mom or dad would come in and say "why arent u socializing with your friends" and i would have to explain to them the fact that i was having 3 simultaneous conversations on xfire and was talking over Ventrillo with about 10 other people, some who i knew in real life - skidzilla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5So... raise your skills in cooking!? ;)
- StateofMind09, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10If it's anything like any other MMO it's more addictive than it is fun. You start playing it, don't like it, then realize that you've been playing it for three days straight and don't plan on stopping.
- onemoretry, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5WoW has been responsible for killing several local lan's here in utah =( protocol 42 used to rake in 300 people for its once a month lan party, now they were forced to close up because the turnouts were less and less because of WoW :(!
- loconet, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7It is designed to be addictive. Like nicotine in smokes, the product depends on people's addiction. In this case, all the addictive components sum to create a game that has all gamers constantly paying the monthly fee that keeps Blizzard happy.
If you look at it closely, the game is designed around relatively simple tasks with intimidate rewards. People naturally like this. The importance of these rewards increase as time goes on. Everything from the core leveling part of the game, to the professions, the old pvp ranking system, to the class abilities, the faction reputation, tierl 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 gear, etc, etc is built around the concept of climbing a ladder. I can't find the place where I read this but this placed mentioned that the human mind is naturally addicted to this setup where one can not walk away from "one more pvp fight" , " x honor more", "one more level", etc. In addition to this number climbing aspect, it also has a whole social portion. They've introduced another addictive component - human interaction. I've seen it in IRC back in the day, and now through MSN, myspace, etc. Humans are social animals and these games elegantly exploit this to keep the user hooked. Be it because you want to talk to guild members all night while ganking opposite faction characters or because you want to brag about your new epic tier 5 axe, It is there to add to the addiction.
This game is popular for the same reason smoking was once popular (although obviously it is arguably less dangerous to your health). Everyone is doing it and once you try it you can't stop! It is designed to not let you stop! Hell, Blizzard even keeps your account around even if you cancel it just in case you decide to go back.
//....Now on to continue my quests in Outland.. - SirNoobius, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I haven't played wow either but I play Guild Wars and I mean it's not really addictive. I've only played like 400 hours in the past 6 months. and yes Guild wars costs money too. it's like 50 every six months to get the new game and continue playing new stuff.
- doctorcaligari, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Tyrone Biggins says "I want some CRACK!" (scratches neck repeatedly)
- Margaret, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Well I had a level 60 and loved playing. I have not played in over a year, but still think that it was a lot of fun. I got my both of my parents (retired) playing and they spend all day playing. They spent their lives working and raising three kids, and now they have a way to meet new and interesting people around the world without spending tons of money, that they do not have, to travel. (They got a lot of traveling done when we were kids anyways.) Yes, most of the people they meet in the game are much younger than them, but they have actual relationships with them. They know about their personal lives, family situations, relationship issues, what is going on in school, etc. It is almost like having a whole new family for them, one that they do not have to spend a lot of money on. (thanks mom and dad for all that you have done for me.) Sometimes I wonder if the game is bad for them, I mean they use to be in bed by 8:00 and now they are raiding until 1:00 in the morning. It's crazy, but they love it. They even went and waited in line with 100 other people at midnight to buy The Burning Crusade. I love that my parents are so happy playing this game.
- redforty, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6lol for using the term "Nerf" against Blizzard. Oxymoron.
- WhiteRaven, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This event belongs in textbooks as the definition of "pent-up demand".
- scabbers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'm never getting those counter-strike years back.
- Afreyt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3That was called Diablo. And while, yes, it did have multiplayer, the game was built around a single player campaign that revolved around getting experience, defeating bad guys, and collecting uber loot. And it was by Blizzard no less. And quite popular. On and offline.
Of course the best part was going online and using a mod called Townkill. - SirNoobius, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4y'know if you have red eyes from smoking pot that's perfectly okay but as soon as you start getting red eyes from Wow then it becomes a problem.
- Jugalator, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"I've honestly never played it so I don't get what the big deal is."
I've played it and still don't get it ;-)
It feels like far too much of a time sink to be appealing for me. :-/ - klinsek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2http://www.joinvanguard.com ;)
*ducks* - Afreyt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2not impossible, just a pain in the ass to connect to a server emulator.
- Artifez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah Vanguard is exclusively for thise people with really mega-powerful rigs. I have a decent mid-range box and I can't play it past 20 FPS. Very much a niche market game.
- smarm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If nothing else, I think this game clearly demonstrates the fact that people are still willing and happy to pay for their entertainment - if it's good.
Copious amounts of money is wasted on copy protection, instead of directing those funds to the actual creation of a quality product; one that entices the consumer, and gives good reason for him/her to keep coming back for more.
Games publishers should sit up and take notice. Maybe music and movie bosses should too. (but they wont). - Artifez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I quit a year ago out of boredom not some fear of addiction. I have to say BC has a scale and difficulty that really draws you in. I mean hell, right after I go through the Portal theres 100 huge elites waiting on the other side. Nothing like getting introduced to an area by being smeared by a Fel Reaver. It's fun, thats why I play.
- Artifez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think marijuana is marijuana for gamers, at least it is for this gamer.
- shirosamurai, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Meat, we picked that up from your first two posts. Give it a rest, mate.
- Smeed, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Those who lack the self control and play for the whole day deserve the loss of their social life.
