- slappynutz, on 10/12/2007, -11/+66Betamax (and its derivatives) are the still the standard in broadcast production. I have a stack of my recent work mastered to digibeta and betamax sitting on the edge of my desk, so yes, Sony is still making money off of Beta.
- lowriderjohn, on 10/12/2007, -7/+56you're telling me that porn exists outside of the internet?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+37that's a good point, not a lot of people realize that while betamax lost to vhs in the home market, betacam and its derivatives (digital, etc) have far surpassed the vhs-like formats in the broadcasting business...
- kenvsryu, on 10/12/2007, -14/+40I've heard of a porn studio adopting bluray - and that's how vhs won over betamax.
- mianos, on 10/12/2007, -4/+29Contrary to popular opinion betacam is not betamax. Sure the plastic box the tape is in is the same and the tape width is the same but that's where it ends. The tape itself is completely different (and runs *much* faster). Of course betacam is rapidly being replaced by digital formats.
- TheDiggMan, on 10/12/2007, -12/+35Remember the Panasonic 3DO? Probably not. It was a game console by Panasonic that came out months before the Playstation 1. It was as good, if not better (graphics-wise), as the original Playstation, but failed because of its horribly high price at $700. Same story here with the Playstation 3.
- NeoPlatonist, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23My cousin bought one of those when they first came out. It was pretty much the coolest thing I had ever seen.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -11/+33What, sold out?
- macbookpromat, on 10/12/2007, -4/+24Why pay when you can get it free!
- DeadlyCouncil, on 10/12/2007, -9/+28the answer is... possibly.
- joshman5k, on 10/12/2007, -5/+22Why would you want the console to fail?
Wouldn't you at least like it to be around for competition??? - VeryAngryJim, on 10/12/2007, -6/+22in this day and age most tech people get their porn over the net, not hard copies like blu ray, and tech people are the ones most likely to adopt a new format.
In all seriousness I've seen 720p porn once, and it was far too detailed for my taste, I don't see it catching on. - cyphertink, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18months? try 2 years,
3do October, 1993
Playstation September 9, 1995 - spooniep, on 10/12/2007, -5/+21Yeah. I'm so sick of it. Give the PS3 some time. So many other consoles have had sh**ty launch titles, including the Xbox, Xbox 360, PS2, Dreamcast and even some of the launch games for the Wii kinda suck. Give the developers time to learn the systems and make better games. Give Sony a chance to work out their production woes. Then check back in a year or so, and lets see how level the playing field is then.
- PunkFenixJT, on 10/12/2007, -11/+26Anybody else tired of reading the PS3 bashing on digg? its like anyone can just write a quick blog post and then submit it to digg saying "Proof that PS3 will fail", and it will have 100+ diggs w/o anyone even reading it.
- tc811, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17I bet it would have been easier to tell if they shipped with enough units, but then again Playstation already has such a large fanbase; I seriously doubt PS3 will fail, but I'm more than sure it won't be as successful as PS2 was last-gen.
- beatbox360, on 10/12/2007, -10/+24Comparing the PS3 to Betamax is an incorrect analogy. The PS3 could well be the next 3DO, that is true, but I believe a more appropriate, and probably intended, analogy would be Blu-ray to Betamax.
At any rate, I don't believe the PS3 will suffer the same fate as the 3DO(superior technology but just too expensive). In my opinion, brand recognition and the cheap price of the Blu-ray drive will help push sells. I also believe that by getting the PS3 into millions of households, Sony is assuring the continued existence of the Blu-ray format.
However, this system will not have the success that the PS2 enjoyed. The main reason being that Blu-ray is a new HD format with very little penetration, and HD televisions simply aren't that prevalent. So, for most people, there is no justification for the extra $100 a PS3 costs vs. an Xbox 360 with the same amount of HDD space. Also, when it comes down to it, a Wii or a 360 can be obtained for about $300, $200 cheaper than the cheapest PS3.
These problems are likely to keep Sony from obtaining a dominant % of market share. More than likely the 360 will win this generation's "console war" with great exclusive titles, a reasonable price-point, HD graphics, and a great on-line service. The Wii may also have a good shot, but I think in the years to come, the weak hardware will keep the Wii from performing as well as it could have.
Briefly, an analogy to last gen market share. My opinion.
360=PS2
Wii=Xbox
PS3=Gamecube
Blu-ray=DVD+R
HD-DVD=DVD-R - KenDigg, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15You couldn't play MGS or FFXIII on a Betamax tape.
People seem to often forget, Sony isn't in this alone. They have some great publishers helping them out. I'd bet the support from Square-Enix alone will be enough to pull them through. - topbravo, on 10/12/2007, -7/+19Seriously. I just bought one and got resistance and My GOD let me tell you how much fun it is... Seriously the whole time that I played it I felt like i was playing Halo 3 :)
- rockforever, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16Wrong, porn sales are still a huge profit.
- culbeda, on 10/12/2007, -10/+22"What, sold out?"
I believe he was thinking more along the lines of buggy, incompatible with previous titles, unavailable in any significant quantities due to production problems, incompatible with low-end high-def TV's, overly complicated for software developers to work with, losing exclusive titles,...
Need I go on? - biochem, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15well it is true that competition brings down prices and increases ingenuity and quality, so you do make a good point.
However, when it comes to Sony, i want them to fail because of their view on business. Ever since the walkman they have been trying to create a new technology that is all theirs and can sell to the world without fear of competition. (ie. minidisc, bubble gum batteries, umd, memory stick duo, ect.. and now blu-ray) They are looking for that one technology that they can exploit and corner the market in. This makes all their products extremely incompatible with everything else.
So i guess its not so much that i want the console to fail, but their business. If, however, they changed their practices, i think they would do much better.
On a side note, i do want blu-ray to fail only because i have an hd dvd player for my 360 and dont want to buy any hddvd movies again in a different format. - dcoolidge, on 10/12/2007, -8/+17Like religion.
- albinoMithos, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12The ps3 just needs some good games matter of fact all of the new gen systems do other wise they'll all be crap.
- betterth, on 10/12/2007, -6/+14Yeah, the PS2 sold 10 million only in the first year due to cost. And it's high cost was what, half of what the PS3's high cost is? It had a dvd player which EVERYONE with a tv could appreciate. The BluRay can only be appreciated by a very, very small percentage of the population.
The PS3 costs more and offers less than the PS2 did, hands down. - MrViklund, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12Marked as inaccurate. This is just FUD. HD-DVD is the next Betamax. 15 GB on a disc. HD-DVD was totally outdated even before it came to the market.
- spudnic, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13Rubbish, the PS3 will be easily outdated by PC standards by mid-way through next year
If price isn't an issue PCs will always be the 'supercomputers' of gaming - andreo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8@VeryAngryJim:
"In all seriousness I've seen 720p porn once, and it was far too detailed for my taste, I don't see it catching on."
What? You don't look at your partner's "naught bits" when having sex in real life. The resolution is going to be far greater then 720p when do look at them... - dcoolidge, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Try getting this much computing power for 600 dollars with a PC.
- betterth, on 10/12/2007, -7/+14It seems likely that the Wii60 will defeat the playstation this generation. The PS3 just isn't impressive enough for the cost.
- ellover009, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I doubt it, the ps3 is the only one offering HDMI 1.3, swapable hard drives wich are bigger than the 360's and large disk format. At this moment it may not look like much but in 2-3yrs HDMI will be in most upcomming devices, a good ammout of games are going to require larger media, being able to get a bigger hard drive is nice, none of that expensive propietary crap tha MS offers, $100 for 40gb!. It may not be offering the best games but it will get a good library, it gives you opportunity to play ps1 and ps2 games. When the xbox 360 came out a lot of people were complainig of problems, my system is bricked, cd tray is stuck, it scratches cds, it overheats, blah blah blah. People wether you like sony or not they are here to stay, it may be expensive now but once they drop price and mass produce that it will sell like hot cakes. I remember how people critisized the original xbox, they came with an radical approach, pc parts, hard drive, people said it would be gone and look again, it's still here. I tried the PS3 and nba 2k7 looked better than the 360 ver, I went to another store the system was frozen and the guy showed me the one on top is a dud, the real one is in a small area near the base, cluttered with cables and barely any air getting in. Some things are like wine, as it ages it gets better. By the way what makes the system is not the console but the games, as long as they can hold on to final fantasy, metal gear, tekken, devil may cry and sould calibur they will survive.
- jawbreaker4fs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Those parts are bound to cost you more than $600... and the cell processor has 7 cores, I've yet to see benchmarks.. but I'd bet running optimized code on the cell beats the pants off dual core.
- Bootes, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10I agree completely. I admit that I haven't read the article either, but the comments are bad enough. Yes the PS3 is expensive, but calm down people. The price will decrease, more unit will be made, more games will come out, and there will be firmware upgrades.
Personally I just went out and bought a 360 yesterday, but the PS3 does not suck. It can hardly even be considered released yet.
And what is with the topic/blurb are we talking about the PS3 or Blu-Ray.... - stou, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@BlackKnight:
The guy from this article doesn't exactly know what he is talking about... (btw: I don't really give a ***** about 360 vs PS3 vs Wii)...
his attempt to fire up "Ye Olde RISC vs CISC" argument in the comparison of the PC procs and those inside game consoles... makes him loose credibility... - AjayF, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6A Blu ray player is going for 1200 dollars CAD, a PS3 is going for 659 Dollars. The Xbox is 549 CAD, plus the HD attachment which is a few hundred bucks. Which makes both systems about equal in price. The only difference is that Xbox live costs money each year and the PS3 cost nothing to play on the net. What does that say about respect for peoples wallets? And on a different note, I would rather not put even more money into Bill Gates bank account, isn't XP enough, let alone encourage him to take over the Universe by paying him yearly just for the honor/privilege of using his video game machine. Your choice?
- kirashira, on 10/12/2007, -1/+650 gigs of porn on one Blu-Ray disc! =)
- betterth, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7What about it rocks? Specifically... why do you say it rocks?
- biochem, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6@ endekks
wow dude, chill
i didnt say anything about cost nor did i say anything about superior technology nor did i say i wanted people to be like me. All i did was give my opinion on sony and that i want hd dvd to win the war
the reason i bought the hd dvd extension was to support the format. If it fails then i am stuck with it, which i knew when i bought it. I dont expect the world to take my needs into consideration, i am just trying to support my format of choice.
PS: your not impressing anyone by trying to wave your 1080p tv in our faces. I could care less about what other people have. Mines 1080i which i am perfectly content with. they r just material objects - jawbreaker4fs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5You'd be correct, if it weren't for the fact that compilers would be the first to be ported to the architecture (well, after the kernel/OS), and at that point they'll be optimized and you can compile your own code. Hell, because the system's exactly the same for everyone who buys it it'll be optimized very VERY specifically, very quickly.
*****, you won't even have to compile stuff yourself.. someone else is bound to do it and make a specific ps3 version of gentoo or something. Just do a stage1 install and you're good to go. - Bootes, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9Yes and there is no PC game that can't be spread across 50 million floppy discs. Come on, technology advances, the world changes, consoles are only updated about once every 4 years. The fact that there are games that exist that require more space than 1 DL DVD, shows the need for a new format. Sure you can always switch discs, but it would be better if you didn't have to, and 4 years is a long time. Games are not getting any smaller.
- dree, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Blu-ray uses VC-1 now.... don't spread outdated info. It didn't use it at launch but it does now.
There are also dual-layer Blu-ray discs available now (50gb for dual-layer Blu-ray, 30gb for dual-layer HD-DVD.... anybody who burns stuff should want Blu-ray to win.)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blu-ray_Disc#Released_titles
To date, 78 titles have been released and a further 53 have been given release dates for 2006. While the earliest releases used MPEG-2 video compression later releases more commonly use VC-1 and AVC.
On September 5, 2006 Warner released the first 3 titles using VC-1 encoding, Blazing Saddles, Firewall, and Lethal Weapon. A further 6 VC-1 encoded titles, Tim Burton's Corpse Bride, Swordfish, Space Cowboys, The Fugitive, Lethal Weapon 2, and House of Wax, were released on September 26.[1] On November 28, 2006 Warner will release their first 50 GB title, Superman Returns.
On September 19, 2006 Disney released the first two titles to be encoded using AVC, namely Dinosaur and Eight Below.
On October 10, 2006 Columbia Pictures released the first dual-layer Blu-ray Disc title, Click. - fallenone05, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4i'm tired of the same freakin story with sony and betamax or whatever, so i'm not wasting my time on this one...
*vomits and farts* - sharpless, on 10/12/2007, -7/+11Actually, the porn industry is looking to use both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray.
- MacHarborGuy, on 10/12/2007, -7/+11to Storm9: 3DO came out before the PS1. Playstation ONE!!! PS1 didn't have DVD playback either. This was well before DVD playback was the mainstream
to DAaaMan64: Back then, Playstation wasn't a household name. Panasonic and Sony, on the otherhand, were household names.
Ex girlfriend of mine had a 3do, and it was a nice little system, Enjoied it more than the virtual boy, thats for sure - jawbreaker4fs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@blackknight
free != ***** - spidoman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4A more accurate question would be will the PS3 be the new Dreamcast?
- hchaudh1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Will PlayStation 3 be the new Betamax?
Depends on where you post this question.
Isn't it time article writers should just go ahead and say their opinion instead of wrapping up their opinion in a question to make it sound impartial. This is a FOX news tactic questioned by Jon Stewart recently. - ZenMojo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5So, wait...Nintendo, which has for years forced you to buy proprietary formats for every single system they sell you, is exempt from the rules because they are overcharging you for cheap, outdated hardware while Sony is undercharging you for expensive, prorated hardware?
On another note, why is it that Sony-haters always whip out the Betamax or UMD while ignoring everything else Sony is responsible for?
What about the 3.5'' floppy disk, the CD, the Mini-CD, the DVD? - dree, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Blu-ray is also at dual layer. (50GB)
The first dual-layer release was Click (Adam Sandler movie) http://reviews.cnet.com/4531-10921_7-6650945.html
50GB is a 5.5x increase over 9GB dual-layer DVDs..... that's why I want Blu-ray to win.
Before anybody else tries to argue with outdated information.....
yes, Blu-ray movies use VC-1 instead of MPEG-2 now.

sony won, its a done deal...
however, HD formats are not gonna matter for atleast 3-4 years. so bluray is still a loser for a LONG time.
i have no love for sony, but they already won, HD DVD vs bluray, the name alone won, let alone the marketing, and the actual logo in the sunday ads. sony won, HDDVD lost, both will lose for a LONG time -
