- skidzilla, on 10/12/2007, -9/+50Why port Linux onto everything?
Because Wii can.
/rimshot. ;) - Agret, on 10/12/2007, -2/+26@GawtMilk
This is just the Linux driver on the PS3, it's not usable in games... - Paroparo, on 10/12/2007, -5/+27Technically not amazing, but amusing as hell. Very much dugg.
- rockforever, on 10/12/2007, -9/+29Why is this ironic? I don't see any irony in creating an emulation tool. I think this is one answer to all those morons who always scream "Why does everyone want to port Linux to everything??". This is just an interesting experiment. They can make some nice little Linux games that use the Wiimote now.
- hernick, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20I am the author of WMD, a Linux Driver for the Nintendo Wii Remote. I'm not japanese though, and I'm not a group - but I'm very proud that my driver is getting some attention :)
Anyway, if you want to get the latest copy, just search google for WMD FTW - it's the first link that comes up! - afx1, on 10/12/2007, -11/+28I'm pretty shocked...a PS3 was actually bought by intelligent people.
- netdroid9, on 10/12/2007, -4/+21Perhaps he meant that it's ironic that the PS3 can use the Wiimote, not that Linux can use it.
- StevoCJ, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15@Tanglefuzz
You mean so much for wii60? - Zanick, on 10/12/2007, -14/+28Well I'm glad something works on the PS3.
- Nobi-Wan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12This is unpossible! Sony said motion sensing and rumble couldn't work with the PS3!!
- Sixcolors, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8"RTFA"
Article? What article? It was four pictures and not one of them showed any signs of Wii remote control. Just one picture of a guy pointing the Wii controller at the screen. - allenb, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Where's the benefit in them doing that?
If they can shift controllers to PS3 owners, not only does it put a few more Yen in their pockets, it gives the PS3 owners a flavour of what they're missing.
There's no danger of Wii-quality games being released for PS3s with the Wii controller, so it's not like the Wii will lose out. - jizzimmy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8guitarmania?
- xSEED, on 10/12/2007, -7/+13linux owns
- ChumpChief, on 10/12/2007, -7/+13Unless someone makes a Wii emulator for linux, running on a PS3... That would be sweet.
- jrob, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10wonder if we'll see this on xbox1 (not via linux, but a ported bluetooth stack to XDK)
- joshman5k, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7And then that'll be cracked
- trylleklovn, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9RTFA
- dotorg, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6I think you're turning Japanese.
I really think so. - SpecialQ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Blasphemy!
- Spazkake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Finally, a reason to get a PS3!
- Broccoli, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Yah offical support is out of the question. Sony cant use the wii mote unless they paid nintendo royalties, which would never happen.
- pipedreambomb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Could be an interesting story, but what the hell are we supposed to glean from these pictures? The headline could be 'man holds up wii controller at some kind of lecture'. Am I missing something?
- crosswick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Juicy bits summary: they (http://www.keshi.org/blog/2006/12/wii_remote_on_ps3_linux.html) found out what port you have to open and how to set up a full duplex BT connection with Python. The code goes:
def bt_connect(addr):
socket['receive'] = BluetoothSocket( L2CAP )
socket['control'] = BluetoothSocket( L2CAP )
socket['receive'].connect( ( addr, 19 ) )
socket['control'].connect( ( addr, 17 ) )
I wish there was more good code on the news. Can't we all summon Bill Hicks as managing editor for something... Hey, maybe use our magic Wii sticks! Yay! :-) - Megatog615, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Marked as inaccurate. Title should be "Wiimote Working With Linux", which is nothing new.
- WhereAmI, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4I can't wait for the emulator, then there is no reason to buy a Wii, just the Wiimotes and the games [yes, BUY the games...]
- ChrisPelletier, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It was only a matter of time.
- TheXeno, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I find great humor in this
- aweraw, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Yeah, me too... I'm sure Sony anticipated this, and have a few million set aside for the licensing costs.
/sarcasm - afzilla, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1bah
- mrbandersnatch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hey Hernick, great stuff!
Now get back to cleaning that code up, it made my eyes bleed ;)
[Seriously though can you post details of how to get SVN access on the Wiki?] - Gorlith, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1alright yeah let me read the 4 ***** pictures. the fact is that people have had linux on ps3 for weeks and people have had wiimote in Linux for just as long, this isn't currently some amazing piece of news. I don't think WMD, the linux driver for wiimote, was even made by a japanese group. so innacurate, not current. maybe you should do some reading before telling me to RTFA buddy.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+6I love Japanese people. They're so innovative. And Japan's an awesome place to live too, btw.
- theragu40, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Well, it was only a matter of time until someone did this. I guess I'm just surprised that it wasn't Sony itself :).
- womfalcs7, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2The PS3 is so versatile in what you can do with its firmware. I hope Sony can take adavantage.
- aweraw, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Yeah, and good luck adding any kind of 3D acceleration to the PSWii emulator... I can see it now:
PS fanatic 1: "Dude! I have the Wii emulator running on my PS3!!!11!!one"
PS fanatic 2: "OMFG dude, awesome!"
*loads up Wii sports - running at 2 FPS*
PS fanatic 2: "WHOA! Dude, this is amazing!"
*PS fanatic 1 unboxes a wii-remote*
PS fanatic 1: "I know dude! and I don't even have to pay Nintendo a cent!"
*unboxes nunchuck* - CielChocobo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1rofl really hard at GO CHINA GO!!!
@ supermanred
Digg me down, I don't care, maybe some people think it was funny xD - Spongebobxxx, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0There selling under cost also. Check this out!
http://www.bismanonline.com/display_ad.bmo?ad=241411 - daridave, on 10/12/2007, -7/+3No. It works, but you can't expect anything official to ever use it.
SONY may suck [more] lately, but they still have honor and self-respect... - Coy0te, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3The expensive and hard console they're coding for that's what.
- bluah, on 10/12/2007, -11/+6This does highlight the fact that the wii's main selling point is a feature than can be easily replicated. What's to stop a developer from releasing a wii sports-like game for the ps3/360 and bundling it with a controller for the price of guitarmania?
- pyrodrummer69, on 10/12/2007, -10/+5why would anyone disgrace a wii by doing this !!!!
- StevoCJ, on 10/12/2007, -16/+11 Who let the MS-kiddies in?
- NuWeb, on 10/12/2007, -10/+3 BEST CONCOLE EVER..
Figured it whould take a couple of month for PS3 to rip a mimic, but total same device. NICE ONE!!! - supermanred, on 10/12/2007, -13/+6lol
Screw you Japanese fanboys...
MS kiddies all the way! USA!!!! USA!!!!!
Wait a minute....xbox....made....in....china....
GO CHINA GO!!! GO CHINA GO!!!
"In a few years we wont need an army, we'll have won. We're China, right?" -Homer - MaXiMuM32, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2DUN DUN DUN...
- bluah, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1I thought 360s were supposed to be easy to code for.
If you are talking abou the SDK Nintendo has in place for motion sensing, if either competitors are serious enough, they'd put money into doing the same thing. - GawtMilk, on 10/12/2007, -16/+7This is a really great. I think the PS3 vs Wii motion sensing fanboy hate gap is finally closing, with people realizing the innovate products they are left with. I used a Wiimote the other day and it is actually pretty easy. IMO, not as easy as using an actual controller (SIXAXIS), but I'm it is good that people who prefer the Wiimote can use it on their PS3.
That being said, the PS3 has games which require two analog sticks AND motion sensing -- so I guess the Wiimote reverse-engineer won't cover every game.

Alternate link. - bluah, on 10/12/2007, -19/+9Yes, because games don't play and the unit overheats.
- MackPrime, on 10/12/2007, -12/+1my money's on Nintendo "fixing" this in a new version of the controller, WITHOUT telling anyone.
